The thing is, it doesn't describe a sexual orientation anymore. Now it's just like "jerk" or "asshole". If you call someone an asshole, you're not being derogatory towards all assholes everywhere. It's just an insulting term to whomever you're speaking to. Not to what the word describes.

How are you not seeing the point here? It's a slur -> linked to a minority -> used as an insult. Saying "oh it's not meant to be offensive towards gay people" means nothing, saying that everyone uses it now means nothing. If you want to insult someone call them something else, don't encourage people that it's an ok word to use now.

You shouldn't use ANY slurs, but that doesn't stop people from using them in a hateful manner. Faggot absolutely has a different connotation in the gay community, but much like any other slur that has been taken back by a community, when someone outside the community uses it, it sounds offensive. You can't decide that a singular word is no longer going to offend anyone tomorrow, because that word still has meaning to people that have been bashed using it.

Faggot has been used for such a long time in really ONLY as a derogatory term for gay people. Sure there is that "bundle of sticks" thing, but in the last while I've only seen or heard that used as a joke. I bet if you asked any number of people on the street what the word "faggot" meant, a good majority of them would say it's a derogatory term towards gay people, a small number of people would say it's a bundle of sticks, and abso-fucking-lutely no one would say what you would.

You trying to change how that word is used, is like white folks saying that using the N-word isn't racist. It's good that your trying to change it, but it is racist. It really really is.

Look, I'm sorry, but this is just how it is. "OP is a faggot" is an expression that originated on 4chan years ago. It has sense become a meme. It is no more offensive to gay people than that stupid "gaaaaaaaaaay" seal. There are times to be offended when the word faggot is used, this is one of the few times it just isn't worth it.

Source: Spending a lot of time on the internet and being homosexual.

Edit: And no, I don't think that "OP is a faggot" is the only use of the word faggot, the origin of the word faggot, or the most used use of the word faggot. But it is still a term.
