What Christians REALLY mean when they say "I'll pray for you" and they are losing an argument or if they know you are not Christian... (imgur.com)

When someone says "I'll pray for you," I like to respond with "Thanks, and I'll think 'hard' science for you since you're obviously not doing it enough," then I smile, walk away and go about my day as normal :)
[–]rystesh 6 points7 points8 points 26 days ago
I've used that one before.
"I'll pray for you." "And I'll understand the physical universe for you."
[–]FreudianIcosahedron 1 point2 points3 points 26 days ago
I'm going to add this to my repertoire. Thanks!
[–]In_the_heat 3 points4 points5 points 27 days ago
I hate this. When I hear that, my mind screams, "Because prayer worked SO WELL on the impoverished, the diseased, the war torn, the starving. Sure, go the fuck ahead, pray for me."
I remember this happening in my car with a friend (sounds dirty, it's not :( ). He kept challenging me on my declining faith. I told him that if he really believes in what he is saying he will be calling me, knocking down my door, trying to save me from damnation. He prayed for me, and I prayed too that he would see that the world is bigger than our narrow eyes can see. Never heard from him again, so I figure he either 1) doesn't actually believe that everyone who doesn't believe will burn in hell or 2) doesn't really give a shit about me.

How does one go from being an atheist to tremendously fearing hell?
[–][deleted] 26 days ago
[–]GalakFyarr 2 points3 points4 points 26 days ago
That's my question, how did you go from atheist to (I assume) christian?
[–]cody_au 2 points3 points4 points 27 days ago
This really pisses me off when my mom says it.
She isn't religious. She has never been religious. She has been shat on her entire life from her abusive ex-husband, to loves lost, friends and family dead despite prayers to the contrary. And her own son, a pastor for two decades, quit the church after his marriage horribly (and very sadly) failed.
But nah, I'll pray for you, for the book I never read, for the church I never went to except for funerals, for the alleged God I've never seen who has never done anything for me. Because I really want to win Lotto.
People become crazy as they get older and death is knocking on the door. It's stupid as fuck. I will be freaking out, also, however I won't be playing make-believe to make the feeling go away.
[–]Cromcorrag 3 points4 points5 points 27 days ago
LMAO.
That said, some DO truly pray for you.
[–]NiteShadeX2 2 points3 points4 points 27 days ago
"Dear Lord, I now waste minutes out of my evening leaning on my bedside, talking to myself, believing it is actually helping someone."
[–]sunburnd -1 points0 points1 point 26 days ago
That really scares the shit out of me if they do. Think about it....
Someone is laying in their bed ... or prostrate on the floor talking to their invisiable friend (the creator of the universe no less) about me. It is some kind of serious freaky deaky stuff.
[–]MadViolinist 0 points1 point2 points 27 days ago
And this is usually my response to "I'll pray for you".
[–]koremanmusic[S] 0 points1 point2 points 26 days ago
Well said.
[–]MadViolinist 0 points1 point2 points 26 days ago
Why, thank you.
[–]analogkid1 0 points1 point2 points 26 days ago
Yep. They won't actually pray for you. Totally passive-aggressive.
[–]Wet_Toilette_Paper 1 point2 points3 points 26 days ago
I had a boss, of religious leaning unknown, that used to only use the phrase, "Pray about it," for completely hopeless and unforeseeable circumstances.
[–]fishdark 0 points1 point2 points 26 days ago
"And I'll read the God Delusion for you"
[–]roadsiderick 1 point2 points3 points 26 days ago
You pray for me, I'll think for you.
[–]Lineov 0 points1 point2 points 26 days ago
So I've got this friend. Let's call him "God's Man, Jim" because as far as Christians go, my friends and I all think that if god (as people want to view him... i.e the New Testament God) were to have any say in the matter on who represents him on earth, he'd probably choose Jim, he's just that kind of an all around decent human being.
Now, Jim and I don't see eye to eye on everything, I haven't had time to ask him all the hard questions, but when we get into an argument and he loses, his "I'll pray for you" is never a "Go F*** yourself". He just... doesn't get angry. It's weird because when he says it, it's always just with the sense of "yes i actually believe that through prayer god will motivate someone somewhere to help me with x problem."
I initially put it as "Christians but changed it to "many" Christians. Just couldn't figure how to change it on Reddit. Imgur worked fine.
[–]Rikyfree 0 points1 point2 points 26 days ago
"I hope you find Jesus!" And I'll hope you lose your faith.
[–]Caomanure 0 points1 point2 points 27 days ago
In most cases, not all.
[–]Cicero_Republic -6 points-5 points-4 points 27 days ago
You know, when christian are winning an argument, all atheist can say is: "My how simple you are" "You're stupidity and ignorance is showing" ETC ETC
Christian = Atheists
[–]koremanmusic[S] 3 points4 points5 points 27 days ago
True, but most christians rarely are on the winning side of an argument--sorry couldn't help it....
Of the population in The United States, 5% of them are Atheist. Are you telling me that 95% of the population in the United States is rarely on the winning side of the argument?
[–]koremanmusic[S] 2 points3 points4 points 27 days ago
What is your basis for those statistics - FOX news?
You are telling me that 95% of people in the US are Christian? Maybe you better pray for me.
[–]koremanmusic[S] 0 points1 point2 points 27 days ago
check your statistics before saying something - though I take wikipedia with a grain of salt, I would still put it above your ignorant and off-the-cuff made up statistic. So typical of an obtuse Christian like yourself making up statistics and falsehoods to serve your continued lies:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_the_United_States
You know, maybe I shouldn't have put this up - you probably wouldn't have the patience to read this long article with words and all...
[–]MrTovson 1 point2 points3 points 27 days ago
But, you know... The bible says 95%... I believe it's in Bullshitticus 8/23 12:12am.
[–]Cicero_Republic -2 points-1 points0 points 27 days ago
You might not have the "patience" to read my argument. But it's ok. I know how you could be sometimes.
There is goes again, you assume too much. I have never stated I am christian nor did I ever state that the other 95 percent are Christian.
Please tell me that you've read your own source? If you had the "patience" to read it carefully, you would have seen that Atheists make up 1.6% of the United States population. 78.4 percent are Christian 16.4 are unaffiliated, which could mean that their are either agnostic, nothing in particular, (both of these is not Atheism) and atheist. The rest of the population, 4.7 percent, believe in a non-Christian religion.
Now, this is information straight from your source that you were so kind in providing. Allow me to present a few more sources of how many Atheist are in the United States.
http://atheism.about.com/b/2004/12/02/how-many-atheists-in-america.htm This page is in the Atheism page on About.com. It says that Atheists and Agnostics make up about 12% percent of the USA population. Still less than non atheists. However, this article is from 2004 and being agnostic does not mean being Atheist.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_atheism Here is another source about our precise conversation. Don't worry you don't have to read the whole article, I know you don't have the patience. Scroll down to USA and read this carefully. And I cite "The most recent ARIS report, released March 9, 2009, found in 2008, 34.2 million Americans (15.0%) claim no religion, of which 1.6% explicitly describes itself as atheist (0.7%) or agnostic (0.9%), nearly double the previous 2001 ARIS survey figure of 0.9%." HERE IS THE FULL REPORT: commons.trincoll.edu/aris/files/2011/08/ARIS_Report_2008.pdf
Since we know that there are at least 1.6 Americans that are Atheist. 12 percent affiliate themselves with no religion. Let's be geneous and say half of those are Atheist.
In Conclusion, in the United States of America, 1.6% to 6%, claim to be Atheist.
Getting back to our original Argument, that non Atheist never win arguments:
I'm sorry but your argument is a logical fallacy. Probability is the demise to your argument. I hope you see this as clearly as I do. 6 percent of the population can't always win arguments with 94 percent. I'm sure there are smart Atheist out there that always win this stupid argument, but not all, I'm sorry.
I will give you props for doing a little internet research. Well done. So now you've learned that when you talk statistics be sure to "cite" some source, instead of using an assumed figure based on...well nothing. And yes, I DID read my source - and I might add that none are 95/5 (and DEFINITELY 95% Christian)...since we are being particular about things rather than just enjoying a (rather true and humorous) joke.
I, however, put this up as a humorous quip based on perception--leave it to you to not understand the humor or CHOOSE to take offense and act like some self congratulatory person where humor flies straight over your head.
Winning an argument on the internet is like winning an event in the Special Olympics. You might come out on top, but you are still a retard...(OH DID I OFFEND - it is a joke!) So I get very little joy and feel somewhat ashamed that this even became an argument.
BTW, who the hell do you think you are? "I'm sorry but your argument is a logical fallacy. Probability is the demise to your argument. I hope you see this as clearly as I do. 6 percent of the population can't always win arguments with 94 percent. I'm sure there are smart Atheist out there that always win this stupid argument, but not all, I'm sorry."--"logical fallacy?" Are you SPOCK?
You ARE correct that this is a stupid argument - and me, in good form acting like a bratty 5 year old,"you started it!"
[–]Cicero_Republic -2 points-1 points0 points 26 days ago
Ok chief. What ever you say. Penis breath
Homophobic also??? Indeed I am even MORE embarrassed that I came down to this level of discussion.
Btw, The original inaccuracy I was pointing out was that Christianity is NOT 95% of America - not that Atheism wasn't 5%. And the argument that if everyone else believes something they must be right has been tried and exhausted...
Anyhow, I'm gonna go and take a breath mint...;-)
Alright, but I've never started that fact.
[–]TheLastMuse 0 points1 point2 points 27 days ago
When has a Christian ever been on the winning side of an argument?
[–]imnotgood86 0 points1 point2 points 26 days ago*
The reason why someone said that was because he claimed that darwin was the "father of atheism." It had nothing to do with his christian beliefs or anything else. It had to do with him being a complete and utter ignorant idiot. http://www.reddit.com/r/atheism/comments/yo3t2/charles_darwin_on_religion/c5xb2nn
I don't see how he was "winning an argument."
