A lot of the new testament is telling people to forget about the old testament and to follow the teachings of Jesus. One could be a Christian without ever reading Genesis or the old testament.

The discrepancy is easy to resolve. John was baptist, and baptists are from the South, and people from the South can't really be trusted. Not only that, but Genesis was an awesome sort-of-rock band from the 70s and 80s, so they're obviously more trustworthy.

Therefore, Genesis wins and the baptist loses. QED.
