How are these 'abandoned'. The grass is well manicured in all of them..

[–]pilinisi 27 points28 points ago

From what I understand, government no longer allocates funds for their upkeep and maintanance.
Local individuals may take it upon themselves to care for the structures.

[–]kate500 7 points8 points ago

so then they are not 'abandoned'?

[–]astrothug 16 points17 points ago

I think it's close enough. A lot of them have grass peeking through the sidewalk and look like they haven't been cleaned in a long time. So, besides the grass being mowed, they're pretty abandoned.

[–]bojaoblaka 6 points7 points ago

Some of them are not abandoned, for example fifth from the top is located at Jasenovac, Croatia and marks the place of concentration camp which existed there during WW2.

[–]skottles 3 points4 points ago

i was wondering the same thing.

[–]EngagementBacon 3 points4 points ago

They are abandoned by the country. That doesn't mean there are not people there that still care for them.

[–]kate500 1 point2 points ago

and again I say, "so then they are not 'abandoned'?"

[–]EngagementBacon 2 points3 points ago

Nationally yes.

[–]TheThingy -1 points0 points ago

If you look closely, they are covered in graffiti.

[–]1000Steps 7 points8 points ago

TIL: Acid was rampant in Yugoslavia

[–]Bizor 2 points3 points ago

The 4th one on that page was used for Unknown Mortal Orchestra's self-titled album cover.

[–]Cynikal818 2 points3 points ago

I...........would totally live in one of those. Or at least camp out for a weekend

[–]SoloWingPixy 1 point2 points ago

These look like the inspiration for later pokemon...

[–]richertai 26 points27 points ago

Why are a lot of eastern European monuments so damned interesting to look at?

[–]dermusikman 15 points16 points ago

Because they are both like, and unlike, our Western European monuments ;-)

[–]richertai 15 points16 points ago

Or just plain Western monuments. All we have is arches and shit. They have a giant stone memorial with crazy arms and reflective surfaces. They be all inspired an shit.

[–]Captain_Headshot2 7 points8 points ago

In America we have regional differences in our own monuments. Visit any Civil War site with a lot of monuments (like Gettysburg) and you will see very traditional obelisks and other markers from the northern states, and very dramatic, statuesque, even epic monuments from many of the southern states.

How we memorialize our past is a very culturally-personal thing.

[–]richertai 3 points4 points ago

I am American ;)

I went to Gettysburg last year. We tend to pay quite a bit of homage to classical architecture (which includes obelisks, as well), as does the other part of The West: Western Europe.

If we look at buildings, this is especially apparent. Our monuments are much the same.

When I look at the gallery of Eastern European monuments, there seems to be a lot more stark symbolism and abstract shapes.

[–]BigJC103 0 points1 point ago

Have you seen the united states air force memorial across from the pentagon? It not only has a obelisk-esque-ness to it, but also has a crazy arms part to it. And gosh darn it sure is shiny, reflective, and dangerous looking.

[–]richertai 0 points1 point ago

Ah, yeah, I've driven past that several times. That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about. That's the good stuff.

[–]mosqua 0 points1 point ago

Here's some images for the non-locals, it certainly is impressive how it juts out suddenly when you're driving by it.

http://pix.alaporte.net/pub/USA/Washington+DC/Memorials+and+Monuments/Airforce+Memorial/

[–]BigJC103 1 point2 points ago

I'm not local but I drive by it about twice a year. I've always imagined it would be a perfect super villain base if there was some sort of saucer kinda like the sky needle balanced between the 3 spires

[–]Polack14 2 points3 points ago

I think its because of the sheer size and grandeur these objects all seem to have.

[–]10after6 0 points1 point ago

And seem so relevant next to today's monuments yet we know they are 60 years old. Those old dudes had it goin on.

Edit: found out they are not WWII pieces.

[–]Leithia 26 points27 points ago

Can I just live here and be the strange hermit on the mountain? The village children can bring me bread and wifi.

[–]notrox 10 points11 points ago

Can I just live here and be the strange hermit.

My thoughts about most places I see on here.

[–]ndtcssh 83 points84 points ago

It's like a giant Magnamite...

[–]question_all_the_thi 4 points5 points ago

Three in the front, two in the back...

[–]D14BL0 1 point2 points ago

I saw a giant goatse.

The internet has ruined me.

[–]ndtcssh 14 points15 points ago

...WHY THE FUCK DID I GOOGLE THAT!?

[–]258joe007 23 points24 points ago

you must be new here

[–]ndtcssh 3 points4 points ago

Not entirely, I haven't been on Reddit long but I've had some pretty gross stuff showed to me. I'm going to have to go to a burn unit to get that image out of my head.

[–]258joe007 5 points6 points ago

Try this eyebleach.

It's safe i promise :)

[–]ndtcssh 6 points7 points ago

I'm not a dude, I don't care about females.

[–]hobowithashotgun2990 1 point2 points ago

Why didn't I know about this when I worked on a cattle farm? Would have made a lot of those calf births a lot better.

[–]dafragsta 5 points6 points ago

Here is your "1st day on the internets" sticker.

[–]quirkynerdgirl 0 points1 point ago

You took my line. I was gonna say that

[–]Molozonide 3 points4 points ago

Exactly what I thought!

[–]ourmanadam 95 points96 points ago

How do you abandon a monument?

[–]StiffSox 128 points129 points ago

The same way you abandon a baby, you stop taking care of it.

[–]Electrorocket 23 points24 points ago

That monument looks at least 18.

[–]H3000 -3 points-2 points ago

Word for word.

[–]bakednymph 11 points12 points ago

Really cool shot. Really stupid for people to bicker over the semantics of "abandoned."

[–]adobolobo[S] 3 points4 points ago

Thanks :')

[–]jbs398 10 points11 points ago

[–]meistergeister 1 point2 points ago

Thanks!

[–]NittLion78 5 points6 points ago

I figured this was just another Yes album cover.

[–]InterPunct 5 points6 points ago

Or Jefferson Airplane, which cleared the way for Jefferson Starship. The stage was now set for the Alan Parsons Project, which I believe was some sort of hovercraft.

[–]AtomicDog1471 4 points5 points ago

Is it one of those "lead zeppelins" I've heard so much about?

[–]leparsdon 7 points8 points ago

Wow, this looks like a monument to our alien overlords..lol

[–]aarkerio 15 points16 points ago

Maybe is not abandoned, I don't see graffitty and the grass is done. I think the architect is from this school:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brutalist_architecture

The darkness zones in the concrete is a desire effect.

[–]10after6 0 points1 point ago

I think the opposite is true. The brutalist architecture was influenced by the post WWI sculpture. IKBW

[–]EkriirkE 9 points10 points ago

Every time I see this posted I always think of one of the Evangelion angels, Sahaquiel

[–]elitetoast 1 point2 points ago

I think the same way, then I wonder if my entire race are just Angels and no one knows.

[–]MindlessJamiroca 2 points3 points ago

Magnemite what the fuck you doing in Yugoslavia?

[–]Lurker4years 7 points8 points ago

Monument to what? "recall the nation’s glory in the second world war."

[–]Baron_Von_Badass 9 points10 points ago

Thank you. I was hoping someone would say it in the comments. Such a shame that a monument as beautiful as this has fallen into such an ugly (while simultaneously interesting) state of disrepair.

[–]StanleyRiver 4 points5 points ago

...and on your right, you will see: a primitive model of the Imperial Tie Fighter.

[–]wet_cement 2 points3 points ago

I thought it was a mostly buried primitive star destroyer... I think your idea works better.

[–]new-socks 5 points6 points ago

I can picture myself pulling out the master sword right from in front of that thing.

[–]whizzard 3 points4 points ago

Needs a good power wash. I know a guy.

[–]techtakular 5 points6 points ago

pew pew pew!

[–]greatunknownpub 2 points3 points ago

Looks like a structure you'd find in a Zelda game.

[–]succybuzz 1 point2 points ago

Many years in the future another civilization will find this monument and ponder "What the flying f*** was this strange looking mechanism used for?"

[–]vaillancourt 1 point2 points ago

they are called spomeniks

[–]squareferriswheel 3 points4 points ago

Spomenik means monument.

[–]tanneragle -1 points0 points ago

Looks just like Magnamite!

[–]DarenDark 1 point2 points ago

I am so inspired! Thank you for this :D

[–]wackychimp -1 points0 points ago

A monument to GlaDOS

[–]Drawtaru 1 point2 points ago

Can a monument really be abandoned? It's not like it was ever inhabited...

[–]macgruder1 1 point2 points ago

I really wouldn't consider it abandoned, since it's just a sculpture that wouldn't need much upkeep save for every few years giving a powerwash. Cool shot, though.

[–]Davesnotheree 0 points1 point ago

These are some of the most fucked up monuments I've seen to date. Seriously wtf?

[–]dMage -1 points0 points ago

I swear this gets posted once a week

[–]strawicky 0 points1 point ago

Manicured by sheep maybe

[–]kate500 -1 points0 points ago

I don't like it. Colors are off the charts, and I do not get the feel of Abandoment in your pic.

[–]I-hate-reposts -1 points0 points ago

This is reposted every other week, we do not need more info thank you!

[–]DubiousPig 0 points1 point ago

Abandoned Porn. This subreddit is called Abandoned Porn. I think I'm pleased it's not what I thought it was.

[–]coreyisthename -4 points-3 points ago

Let's see how many reposts we can do this week! Jeez

[–]elementalmw 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of some of the areas in ICO

[–]cobaltgiant 0 points1 point ago

[–]Toshiro_Mifune -3 points-2 points ago

It's hard to believe that someone actually signed off on this project... even for Yugoslavian standards this is an incredible eyesore.
