Oooh dude, i cannot wait for this movie to come out.

DDL is in the highest range of cool. Someone needs to give him a 'Bad Motherfucker' wallet.

[–]Patass 8 points9 points ago

What the fuck is it with Abe lately...

[–]peon47 6 points7 points ago

150th anniversary soon.

[–]dorianh49 4 points5 points ago

I think we're being abe-rolled. Slowly. Subtly.

[–]ManCaveDaily 6 points7 points ago

Hell of a poster.

That said, Spielberg movies...I usually enjoy them, but I never, ever feel any impetus to actually go see them.

[–]DutchPrisoner 5 points6 points ago

My sentiments as well. Spielberg's films are generally very solid, but nothing in his storytelling ever blows me away. Dare I say that the Spielberg formula is too noticeable across all of his work?

[–]DJanomaly 8 points9 points ago

You do realize you're talking about the man who directed ET, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan, right?

It's a bummer that none of those blew you away.

As far as story-telling and depth? Yes on Jaws, Saving Private Ryan, also A.I. and Close Encounters of a Third Kind (which you didn't include). He's an amazing director who knows how to put together a shot, work with actors, create emotion, but his stories are not very adventurous in how they are told or ground-breaking in their messages. It's easy to take for granted because of how long he's been around, but it all looks very formulaic at this point.

A.I. might be my favorite of his, but only because he was really channeling Kubrick, who was a much more talented story-teller.

I guess I have a different "blown away" notion than a lot of people. I guess I would say that Raiders did blow me away at the time, maybe Jaws to an extent (I was very young when I first saw both, but they still hold up as very good). Also the first 15 minutes of Saving Private Ryan.

Schindler's List was very good too, although my beef with it (and Private Ryan) has to do with Spielberg's tendency to always want to emphasize the happy/heroic story within whatever topic he has chosen. I understand that this criticism might not make much sense to anybody, but I'll try to explain a bit.

I personally like historical war films that emphasize brutality and the negative psychological impact of war (Paths of Glory, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon) because that's what war is most centrally about. Spielberg's stories themselves are very well done and indeed, taking these more heroic stories and wrapping them up in war stories is great for your box office receipts. But in the United States people tend to have a very detached, misinformed, and dare I say romanticized view of war -- I wish Spielberg would would make the realities of war and tragedy more central to his stories. He is by no means required to do this but because he doesn't, I can't find myself admiring his work as much as some others.

As for his fiction work, like I said it feels too formulaic. It's a good formula, but I feel like I haven't seen him do something really, really challenging since maybe The Color Purple.

I get it. He's the pop music of movies. Really good pop music, but still shallow and empty.

[–]TheKonyInTheRye 1 point2 points ago

Personally, I love his movies. Raiders is one of my favorite films ever. I definitely know what you mean by formulaic though. Nearly all of his movies are "ordinary person in extraordinary situations". You can definitely tell when he produces too, because he's great at leaving little bits of his style in other director's movies too.

[–]DoctorSubmarine 0 points1 point ago

Close Encounters? I think that's his strongest film in terms of story (and character work, not to mention).

[–]LifeWisher17 3 points4 points ago

Spielberg didn't have to do anything for this movie. Just tell Daniel Day-Lewis to be Abe Lincoln and yell action.

[–]ILikeTheWayItSounds 1 point2 points ago

I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!

[–]Gotterdamerrung 3 points4 points ago

DDL: So committed to his character that he actually had someone assassinate him for this film.

[–]luckytalon 1 point2 points ago

Is this official?

[–]JH315 2 points3 points ago

Yep. It's official. Looks like The Beard has another shot at Best Picture/Director on his hands.

[–]danlthemanl 1 point2 points ago

Can't wait to see what kind of aliens are in this one.

[–]theedang 0 points1 point ago

I am going to watch the shit out of this movie.

[–]Plaisantin 0 points1 point ago

Do they even need to hold the oscars this year? This guy and this movie are going to win everything anyway.

[–]WoolyWombatWinking 0 points1 point ago

I just hope he doesn't butcher history like he did with Munich.

[–]underattack86 1 point2 points ago

I guarantee he will, Spielberg is all about family values and happy endings. I'm expecting an absolute white-wash.

[–]Mahler5 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure how this one will have a happy ending though. I mean (spoilers) he dies at the end. Then the country faces Reconstruction, which was a very difficult time economically for the US. I guess you could end it hopefully, but it won't be a stereotypical "happy ending" where Abe and Mary Todd sit on the balcony of the White House after coming home from the theater to watch the sun go down.

[–]_valtiel_ 0 points1 point ago

I was thinking Liam Neeson should be Lincoln.

[–]DutchPrisoner 0 points1 point ago

Neeson was, I remember hearing, the original choice. For some reason or another he had to back out. I'm glad this happened because DDL is the best choice imo.

[–]keithberry 0 points1 point ago

I can't wait for the social media campaign: "Abe has just checked-in at Ford's Theatre." It should be equally breathtaking.

Favourite actor of ALL TIME

When you are a truly great man of vision, you outlast time. You go, cous.

[–]lunatica29 1 point2 points ago

wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow

[–]berylthranox 0 points1 point ago

Was Liam Neeson originally cast for this role?

[–]masterzee2 0 points1 point ago

They've been filming this movie in my dad's home town, Petersburg VA, for a few years.

[–]bobchees3 0 points1 point ago

This will be way better than the vampire killer one...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Why did he make a movie about Lincoln when that stupid vampire movie just came out?

[–]Darth_Saltine 0 points1 point ago

'Cause he's been planning this movie for years, got the chance to cast Daniel Day-Lewis and he's Steven "Don't call me Esteban Spielbergio" Spielberg, I don't think he was worried about people suffering from Lincoln fatigue.
