Well, the film is starring:

  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt as "Robert Todd Lincoln"
  • Tommy Lee Jones as "Thaddeus Stevens"
  • Daniel Day-Lewis as "Abraham Lincoln"
  • Jarred Harris as "Ulysses S. Grant"
  • Jackie Earle Haley as "Alexander Stephens"
  • David Strathairn as "Secretary of State William Seward"

As well as other fairly big names, which you can read in the cast list on IMDb.

[–]Womens_rights_LOL 142 points143 points ago

Hmm, no John Wilkes booth named in the cast list.

[–]pimfram 275 points276 points ago

He doesn't appear until the sequel.

[–]A_Polite_Noise 528 points529 points ago

Lincoln discovers young Booth in this movie and sees great potential in him; the betrayal doesn't happen until the 3rd film, when they fight on a lava planet.

[–]Show-Me-Your-Moves 366 points367 points ago

IT'S OVER, ABRAHAM! I HAVE THE HIGH GROUND!

[–]A_Polite_Noise 167 points168 points ago

Which is impressive, considering Abe's height.

[–]CanadianMutton 41 points42 points ago

I just imagined Bryan Cranston as John Wilkes Booth and wet myself in excitement. A man can dream...

[–]oaktreeanonymous 70 points71 points ago

The funny part is that ~5 years ago, we, like most TV studios, would've went "are you shitting me, the dad from Malcolm in the Middle? Naaaaaaaaaaaah."

[–]CanadianMutton 24 points25 points ago

Thankfully we now know better.

[–]SQUID_FUCKER 34 points35 points ago

I am the one who acts.

[–]XSeveredX 17 points18 points ago

It hasn't been unheard of for films to keep certain spoiler characters out of the credit list, at least until the movie premieres.

[–]OldMiner 80 points81 points ago

Spoiler? Are you saying something unexpected might happen in Lincoln involving Mr. Booth? What could it be!?

[–]bulllshifter 15 points16 points ago

Don't listen to the rumors, there's no evidence to back it up.

[–]Stumblin_McBumblin 15 points16 points ago

Interesting point. If they did openly say who was cast as JWB, then we would all know how the movie will end. I know that sounds dumb since we know he was assassinated, but the movie doesn't necessarily have to end with his death.

It could end earlier. Or, hell, it might just end with him entering the theater, on the way to the theater, etc. Total cock-tease.

[–]NemWan 8 points9 points ago

Booth appears in Lincoln's life multiple times before the assassination. Booth was a famous actor and celebrity, considered stunningly handsome, and because he was a leading actor at Ford's Theater from its opening, Lincoln attended more than one play that Booth starred in. Booth also attended Lincoln's second inauguration.

[–]nerdy1 7 points8 points ago

Chances are John Wilkes Booth is just going to be an off-screen gunman. Or if not a guy with a gun who appears at the very end of the film, a tiny role for any actor. Hell they might not even show the assassination.

[–]fknrat 17 points18 points ago

god, SPOILERS anyone?

[–]Po-tay-toess 31 points32 points ago

[–]JMUDukes1750 29 points30 points ago

Jackie Earle Haley as Alexander Stephens is an amazing piece of casting

[–]ElMoog 3 points4 points ago

How about Tommy Lee Jones as Thaddeus Stevens?

[–]vikinglady 24 points25 points ago

Fuck yeah, Jackie Earle Haley.

[–]Theorex 11 points12 points ago

What are you waiting for? Do it...DO IT!, he was great as Rorschach.

[–]javastripped 18 points19 points ago

BTW, you may remember Secretary of State William Seward from states such as FUCKING ALASKA!

That SoB got us fucking alaska and was ridiculed at the time for doing so!

[–]alexanderwales 18 points19 points ago

I still call it Seward's Folly.

[–]MiltOnTilt 17 points18 points ago

Come on man. You can't list the cast and leave out SALLY FUCKING FIELD!! Multiple Oscar and Emmy Award winner, Sally Field.

Edit: I disrespected Sally Field. I am shamed.

[–]verbtheadjectivenoun 7 points8 points ago

*Field. She is also apparently one of the only ladies in this movie.

[–]Quality_Sagebrush 5 points6 points ago

Liam Neeson was originally cast as Abraham Lincoln in January 2005

...

I kind of want them to make it twice just so I can see the LN one too.

[–]Janus_Grayden 2 points3 points ago

Normally I'd worry about too many big names splitting the face time too many ways, but everything about this project feels like it's going to be heavily focused on Daniel Day Lewis' character. Seeing as how he is fantastic at those kinds of roles, I'm very excited.

[–]EntingFantastic 11 points12 points ago

If they got Philip Seymour Hoffman and Gary Oldman too I'm pretty sure they'd have the best actors in one film.

[–]michaelje0 16 points17 points ago

And Paul Walker!

[–]A_Polite_Noise 543 points544 points ago

I am giddy with anticipation to hear what the rigorously-researched period American accent Mr. Day-Lewis is going to use sounds like.

[–]wewd 293 points294 points ago

Lincoln supposedly had a very high voice with odd speech mannerisms and wouldn't have sounded very good on a recording (which he just missed out on, as he was killed right around the time that audio recording was beginning). So I hope for the sake of the moviegoers that DDL doesn't get too authentic with his Lincoln accent.

[–]crowingzero 512 points513 points ago

"Lincoln supposedly had a very high voice with odd speech mannerisms"

Great, now I'm going to go around thinking Lincoln sounded like Bane

[–]TiberiCorneli 6 points7 points ago

Dammit now I want that to be in the movie.

Can we just get a Jefferson Davis v Abraham Lincoln balls-to-the-wall explodey smackdown action movie? I would watch the shit out of that.

[–]Lonelan 219 points220 points ago

Blade, you merely adopted the vampire hunting lifestyle. I was born in it.

[–]MrVandalous 78 points79 points ago

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty(THROUGH THE HUNTING OF VAMPIRES), and dedicated to the proposition that all men(NOT VAMPIRES) are created equal.

[–]darrensayswhat 53 points54 points ago

I started reading this in JFK's accent. What the hell is wrong with me?

...kinda like it that way, though.

[–]Psyladine 172 points173 points ago

Ah, Fah Scoh an' sefen yeas ago, ah fathas braht furth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in libaty (thru the hunting of tha vam-pies), and dedicated to the prapasishin that all men (not vam-pies) ah creeted equal.

[–]k3rn3 6 points7 points ago

[–]DeathToPennies 6 points7 points ago

JFK can make almost anything sound pretty good. He's like Morgan Freeman in that sense.

Titty Sprinkles.

[–]electrolemon 23 points24 points ago

Now is not the time for emancipation... that comes later.

[–]ACamelsDragon 18 points19 points ago

I would pay so much money for Tom Hardy to do his Bane voice on Lincoln's body.

[–]Streeb-Greebling 16 points17 points ago

The Union will ennndure

[–]DrKillingsworth 26 points27 points ago

"What's the next step of your master plan?" "Crashing this slavery" immediately starts beating up cabinet members.

Ok, I'll find my own way out.

[–]Odusei 7 points8 points ago

You know, contemporaries of Theodore Roosevelt said the same thing about his voice, but when I hear recordings, I just can't agree. Maybe it has more to do with what people thought a normal voice sounded like back then.

[–]TiberiCorneli 5 points6 points ago

Maybe he did? I always think it's kind of interesting. Lincoln was supposedly kind of high-pitched, but he tends to get portrayed as having this kind of deep, booming voice. Theodore Roosevelt sounded like this and except for Tom Berenger people tend to give him the same sort of voice.

And Benjamin Harrison doesn't really sound anything like what you might imagine if you just saw his picture. Although McKinley totally does.

[–]IvanKaramazov 40 points41 points ago

You don't have to worry too much, though. In Team of Rivals, the book on part of which this movie is based, Lincoln's voice is said to be high-pitched compared with most orators of the day. I believe she even goes so far to say he was probably a high baritone or tenor.

There are also several accounts depicted in the book where people at first thought his speaking voice (which would be louder and more strident than his voice in private) sounded a bit nasal or nervous, but about 10 minutes into any speech, the crowd found him enthralling. Sound like any actors you know?

[In] an age where speech-making prowess was central to political success, when the spoken word filled the air "from sun-up til sundown," Lincoln's stirring oratory had earned the admiration of a far-flung audience who had either heard him speak or read his speeches in the paper.

TL;DR -- If DDL does the voice right, we will be surprised at first but fall in love with it before the end.

[–]Goingawol 19 points20 points ago

So bane again right?

[–]derekscurveball 19 points20 points ago

Perhaps he's wondering why someone would shoot a man, while he's watching a play?

[–]SubAtomicPlayboy 83 points84 points ago

John Wilkes Booth knew that he wouldn't sound good on recording and saved him from a lifetime of pain. Thank you John

[–]wewd 42 points43 points ago

I'd like to think that the Whitest Kids U Know skit was how the Lincoln-Booth relationship really happened, but I like your hypothesis as well.

Too soon man.

[–]Hakoten 13 points14 points ago

"Rise and shine, Mr. Booth... Rise and shine."

[–]Yserbius 10 points11 points ago

There was actually an audio recording of Lincolns voice. Problem was, it was on a wax cylinder that disintegrated after a few years.

[–]The_Doctor_00 8 points9 points ago

I imagine he sounded like an American version of H.G. Wells.

Both very witty men though, my favourite Lincoln quote was made when he was charged with being two faced,

If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one?

Even with a voice like Wells, it's a great retort!

[–]Sayros 5 points6 points ago

You and I both know he will, maybe even if the Spielberg asked him not to. How terrible could it be? I'm sure he'll make it work.

[–]Tenchiro 2 points3 points ago

I heard it was over-dubbed by Mike Tyson.

[–]LawBobLoblaw 69 points70 points ago

I know DDL is a phenomenal actor, but it's like he molded his face to fit Lincolns own facial structure... which means only one thing...

The man is of the Faceless Men.

[–]SphericalArc 79 points80 points ago

[–]LawBobLoblaw 24 points25 points ago

I can't tell if Nigel makes everything better, or makes everything worse. What a paradox.

[–]Cuboner 18 points19 points ago

Oh, well the answer is clearly better. Thanks for clearing that up.

[–]pranish 6 points7 points ago

Either that or he's a Face Dancer

[–]Blastmaster29 31 points32 points ago

This was filmed in my city and a buddy of mine was an extra on the film. He said DDL's voice is EXACTLY what you would imagine Lincoln to sound like. Can not wait for this movie

[–]FullSharkAlligator 22 points23 points ago

imagine Lincoln to sound like.

That could be a bad thing, since he's such a worshiped American icon.

[–]IvanKaramazov 21 points22 points ago

Hopefully Blastmaster29's friend is historically literate.

[–]Carninator 5 points6 points ago

Can you ask him what he sounded like? I doubt most people imagine him with a high and odd voice.

[–]MrF33 6 points7 points ago

For some reason, I'm imagining Sean Connerey as the voice of Lincoln.

[–]NonSequiturEdit 18 points19 points ago

"Four shcore and sheven years ago..."
Nah, I'm not feeling it.

[–]FrontRowSteve 6 points7 points ago

I've said it before and I'll say it again; the man comes out of his hiding hole every few years, snags an unlikely performance, and knocks it out of the park.

[–]Ghox 5 points6 points ago

Daniel Day-Lewis is the only reason I will watch this flick. If he wasn't the lead, I doubt I'd be interested. //truth

Edit: Because that is how much power this man has over me.

[–]lionelhutz_attyguy 72 points73 points ago

When are we gonna get the first trailer already?

[–]IvanKaramazov 53 points54 points ago

I know. It comes out in mid-November. I am dying.

Maybe during next week's Republican convention for maximum exposure? Lincoln was the first Republican president, after all, despite having very different political values from the current party platform.

[–]UnclePolycarp 18 points19 points ago

I bet that trailer is going to be 25 seconds of all the other actors and then the last 3 seconds DDL will say 2 words and everyone will go fucking ballistic.

[–]SteveRoosevelt 6 points7 points ago

I know, it's killing me

[–]StuporCollider 10 points11 points ago

in a theatre box

[–]silentnoise 102 points103 points ago

Abraham Lincoln actually time traveled to the future and assumed the name Daniel Day Lewis. He then became a famous actor and is now starring in his own biopic.

[–]IvanKaramazov 48 points49 points ago

I posited a similar theory on Facebook some time ago after I found this picture. It's the only explanation that makes sense.

Abraham Lincoln was no man, but an ever-present spirit who has performed many roles and taken many names throughout the course of human events.

Tired of the presidency, he finally staged his own death in 1865 and fled the scene in the guise of the actor, John Wilkes Booth, one of his many alternative identities. Shouting, “sic semper tyrannus!” he fled not the murder of a tyrant, but the constraints and pressures of leadership.

Since that day, this spirit has played many parts, touching the lives of all he meets. Now, he goes by the name of Daniel Day-Lewis, and he has returned to the stage once more to play … himself.

[–]darthricardo 4 points5 points ago

So... Abraham Lincoln is the God-Emperor of mankind? That works for me.

[–]HonkeyDong 96 points97 points ago

I. Free. Your. Slaves.

I free them up!.

[–]EntingFantastic 17 points18 points ago

Dwayne Johnson, Oscar winner. Make it happen Hollywood.

[–]FullSharkAlligator 4 points5 points ago

He's actually a great underrated actor.

[–]EntingFantastic 3 points4 points ago

Wait, really? Proof? Or do you mean a solid, likeable action star? I like The Rock but didn't know he had Oscar chops.

[–]FullSharkAlligator 14 points15 points ago

I can't prove that.

I just think he has a natural charisma / comic timing and does a great job inhabiting roles (Be Cool, Doom, Rundown, Get Smart). He's a great actor in the same way Bruce Willis is a great actor. Not everyone can do what they do.

[–]Bears__Beets__BSG 6 points7 points ago

Manflesh.

[–]VaguelyCondescending 11 points12 points ago

As soon as Lewis was cast.

Last year people just went, "Well, there you go."

[–]furyasd 2 points3 points ago

I can smell everything for Lincoln.

[–]EasyUK 127 points128 points ago

Daniel Day-Lewis is going to rock the shit out of Lincoln, can't wait. The guy is awesome.

[–]EntingFantastic 133 points134 points ago

Lincoln, The Master, Django Unchained, The Hobbit. Gonna' be a good rest of the year.

[–]toxilium 64 points65 points ago

Don't forget Cloud Atlas, the next Wachowski movie.

[–]EntingFantastic 10 points11 points ago

Oh fuck yeah for sure.

[–]danny841 4 points5 points ago

Reading the book now. Pretty good so far.

[–]theloquacioustype 2 points3 points ago

My favorite book. David Mitchell is an amazing author.

[–]ZtiWinterfell 13 points14 points ago

Maybe a bit more action-oriented but both Looper and Skyfall look incredibly promising as well

[–]JakeCameraAction 7 points8 points ago

Great Gatsby, too. The music they chose for the trailer was stupid but I for one can't wait to see it.

[–]greatballsofwonder 10 points11 points ago

I'm afraid that's been moved to next summer.

[–]MyBeautifulChocolate 34 points35 points ago

EVERYBODY SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT VAMPIRES.

[–]noirie 21 points22 points ago

This is the movie I have been waiting for since I read my first Civil War book in 4th grade. I can't help but feel that the stars have aligned on this one and we're due something rather remarkable. Spielberg is back, hopefully, in full on Schindler mode. Day-Lewis is well, Day-Lewis. The supporting cast is one of the best I've ever seen assembled. The screenwriter is terrific (Munich is a favorite of mine) and has some extraordinary source material to pull from.

I know Lincoln is not the perfect president. But that does not keep him from being a fascinating one.

[–]jmoriarty 22 points23 points ago

Damn. And if you haven't read Team of Rivals, upon which this is based, I strongly recommend it. Fantastic book, and it can't help but make you wonder what it would be like if someone like Lincoln made it to the White House today.

But to be totally fair, if Stephen Spielberg directed Daniel Day-Lewis in "The Phone Book: M through P" I'd probably go see it.

[–]aCatPicture 3 points4 points ago

I just finished this book 2 weeks ago. It was incredible. I'm currently reading No Ordinary Time, Kearns Goodwin's book on Franklin Roosevelt, which is just as good IMO.

[–]FUCKED-WITH-A-KNIFE 46 points47 points ago

Four score and seven years ago, I believe I just creamed my pants.

[–]StuporCollider 14 points15 points ago

Like most Redditors, I too walk around with 87 years of cream in my pants.

[–]fireinthesky7 12 points13 points ago

Four score and seven years ago, acroooooooss the room, I definitely just creamed my pants.

[–]He11razor 6 points7 points ago

Abraham Lincoln was a good ol' man

He jumped out the window with his dick in his hand

He said excuse me lady

I'm doing my duty

So pull down your pants and give me some booty

[–]sciencefacts 4 points5 points ago

I wanna read a fun article about how eccentric d.d..Lewis is on the set while filming. I heard he actually went and had himself birthed in a log cabin amd hasn't broken character since.

[–]lnfam0u5 6 points7 points ago

Can't wait til November! They need to release a trailer ASAP

[–]USS_MichelleBachman 6 points7 points ago

The actor playing John Wilkes Booth isn't listed. I wonder if it's going to be Kevin Spacey.

[–]andrewsmith1986 35 points36 points ago

I will watch anything with Daniel day-lewis in it.

[–]Madcardigan 26 points27 points ago

I will watch Daniel Day-Lewis with anything in him.

[–]Brokim 8 points9 points ago

Especially milkshakes

[–]A_Polite_Noise 10 points11 points ago

Watch My Beautiful Laundrette; it is a 1985 movie starring a 28 year old Daniel Day-Lewis as a punk who has a homosexual relationship with Omar (the lead of the film), a Pakistani man and former schoolmate of Johnny who refits a run-down laundrette in London to turn it into a profitable business. It's a good flick (100% on RT), but as a bisexual man, watching young Daniel lick his boyfriend's neck while smiling wickedly during a seemingly platonic hug in front of people they are hiding their relationship from gives me funny pants feelings and is an added bonus.

[–]luke1014 6 points7 points ago

I can't get excited for this Oscar-bait. Spielberg is too emotionally manipulative in his dramas nowadays. His last 2 films were unwatchable.

[–]theintention 9 points10 points ago

It is impossible for Daniel Day Lewis to not look like a boss in anything he does.

[–]overused-meme-alert 24 points25 points ago

like a boss

beep

[–]keilwerth 8 points9 points ago

I would have thought that WT Sherman would have had a spot in the movie. He practically handed Lincoln the election in 1864 when he took Atlanta in July of that year.

Also, he and US Grant were quite influential to one another.

Probably one of my favorite quotes:

"General Grant is a great general. I know him well. He stood by me when I was crazy, and I stood by him when he was drunk; and now, sir, we stand by each other always."

I really would have liked to see Liam Neeson in this role.

I hope this movie covers that while the outcome of Lincoln's policies was ending the evil institution that is slavery, in the process he suspended habeus corpus, censored the press, instituted martial law, oversaw "total war" scorched earth policies and pretty much pulled some legal shit that makes Dick Cheney look like he worshipped civil liberties.

I often wonder if there was an alternative way to end slavery without the civil war and to have ended it without leaving segregation in its wake. Maybe it wasn't possible and ultimately Lincoln did win the war and free the slaves - and in this case the ends did justify the means but we should nonetheless be critical of our past leaders.

I thought freeing the slaves was just a way to win the war and if he could win the war without freeing the slaves he would?

Seems a little too early for a reboot...

Can't wait to see DDL portray Lincoln. I hope no one ruins the ending for me.

Let's just say that it ends with a bang.

Ahhh Daniel Day-Lewis. In my opinion, he is the greatest actor of my generation.

As far as I'm concerned, the only man who could stop PSH or Joaquin Phoenix from winning best actor.

Spoiler: Lincoln dies.

Will he have the Lincoln mole?

If I know Day-Lewis's attention to authenticity, he'll have that mole grafted onto his face.
