Great, every time I see anything to do with an elephant, especially a baby elephant, I am brought back to the mini-series Planet Earth. In one episode, there is a bunch of elephants migrating to find water and they are traveling through a dust bowl where a baby elephant gets separated and starts following mom's footprints...in the wrong direction. Extremely sad.

TLDR: Don't watch Planet Earth if you like elephants.

Well, here's a happier tale of a baby elephant that I saw on T.V. once. An elephant was born without being able to fully extend one of its feet. It would drag one of its legs on the ground as it walked. This eventually could cut his knee and infect him. However, his mother and older sister didn't give up on him and walked at his pace, even when the other elephants migrated way ahead to find water. Eventually after about a day or so, the baby was able to fully extend his foot out and walk normally. The mother, sister and baby were able to catch up with the rest of the group and lived happily ever after. The end

I am comforted by footage I saw of a baby elephant in a zoo that fell into the pond. The pond was deep and he was too short to get out, he was going to drown. THEN ALL THE OTHER ELEPHANTS GOT IN AND HELPED TO PUSH HIM OUT.

I know this elephant! He was born a year ago at the Indianapolis Zoo! My daughter and I drove from Chicago just to see him. SO worth the drive! And there is another new baby just born in late June 2012. Might be time for another road trip.
