[–]FUCKED-WITH-A-KNIFE 115 points116 points ago

They both are still extremely fun to ride despite being high-maintenance.

[–]timothyrds 28 points29 points ago

Just make sure to take change the lube every 3000 miles or so.

[–]holyerthanthou 4 points5 points ago

You can actually wait a bit longer than that.

[–]Ed_Tivrusky_IV 17 points18 points ago

I am going to have to disagree...

Every Mazda I have owned has been extremely low maintenance. The Miata is such a simple car, I couldn't imagine it being as bad as an OAG.

[–]FUCKED-WITH-A-KNIFE 2 points3 points ago

Miatas are great. But when we're talking about the RX series, that's whole different story. Its rotary engine requires a crazy amount of upkeep.

[–]Ed_Tivrusky_IV 3 points4 points ago

Rotaries are different, that's for sure... But shit... there are a few RX7's in these parts that are beasts.

[–]MushroomClouds 0 points1 point ago

Volkswagens last longer though...

[–]teawreck5 0 points1 point ago

Provided you pay for the outrageous maintenance. German engineering is fan-fucking-tastic, but it's way more particular and finnickey than mazda

[–]Znsale01 0 points1 point ago

Pre Mk3 yes. German engineering with cheap plastic parts where usable. I've had more problems with my old mk4 1.8t than anyone should have to deal with. Still love them though.

[–]Clueless_Father 0 points1 point ago

Bullshit. My 1993 Miata lasted wayyyyy longer than my 1993 VW Passat, piece of shit. In fact, every VW I have owned has had serious problems in the first year of life (I was a huge fan, went to the first 5 Waterfests etc). And they all needed serious repairs between 60,000 and 100,000 miles - it used to be engine and electrical, but then when they went to a 100K engine warranty it took that out of the equation. But the electrical problems? Holy shit, and impossibly expensive to fix. They might be better now, but don't give me any shit about "german engineering" because it certainly didn't help my first 4 vehicles.

[–]BearsChief 2 points3 points ago

As a fellow Mazda owner, I second this. Mine just clicked over to 97,000 miles and has never needed anything besides oil and tires. And as ToM_BoMbadi1 said, god they're fun to drive.

[–]Ed_Tivrusky_IV 0 points1 point ago

I'd like to see the Speed3 setup in a Miata. Now THAT would be ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM

[–]EntroperZero -2 points-1 points ago

There are plenty of forced induction kits available.

[–]Ed_Tivrusky_IV -2 points-1 points ago

I don't know enough about the internals on the Miata, though.

I'd be curious if it would need to be sleeved. At that point you're going to probably need a new injection system, bigger intake, bigger exhaust, boring/sleeving of the motor, and then pray you don't grenade your transmission... it's a lot of work and money, if done right.

Forced induction is my favorite, but it definitely does not come without risks!

[–]Griffin-dork 1 point2 points ago

The miata (both the 1.6L and 1.8L engines) are pretty robust. With the exception of the early 1.6s having a shorter crank nose (being prone to breaking off with high mileage or too much added power)

I have a 1.6L an plan on turboing it. Just a simple turbo setup running 8lbs should net me about ~150whp compared to the stock like 97whp.

Either way, they are the most fun Ive ever had driving a car.

[–]Clueless_Father 0 points1 point ago

There are plenty of very well done kits already, and since this is an NC2, the internals have been upgraded including forged rods. Agreed that forced induction can be risky, but that is why so many of us wait until the tuners have had their go, and then we buy from them!

[–]pinatasenpai 0 points1 point ago

Not so much.
The block on the 1.8L miata engines (NA &NB series) is built like a tank. Racing mods have doubled the power output, with that list of extras you just supplied :)

A friend of mine is strapping a supercharger to his street car. A few of us are looking forward to see how it changes.

[–]Ed_Tivrusky_IV 0 points1 point ago

That should be fun. I hear the block on the Scion TC is the same way. It can handle more than double the HP it has stock, without building it.

[–]G3ML1NGZ 0 points1 point ago

www.Miataturbo.net I'm planning my own turbo build

[–]OneCruelBagel 1 point2 points ago

Thirded. I have an MX-5 (mk2), the fiancée has a Mazda 6. Both more or less indestructible. It's got to the point where if I get someone trying to sell me AA or RAC membership, I just say "No thanks, I've got a Mazda."

[–]ToM_BoMbadi1 -1 points0 points ago

Yet still amazing to drive.

[–]Ed_Tivrusky_IV 0 points1 point ago

Very fun cornering, for sure.

[–]quantumwork 0 points1 point ago

I drive one too. I propose that we... stop defending the damn car every time it's mentioned anywhere. It's become ridiculous. Someone's bound to make a Miata-owner image macro.

[–]HalosFan 0 points1 point ago

To be fair, most of the time that people defend it, it's defended against a ridiculous claim. It is a low-maintenance car.

[–]cpnHindsight 8 points9 points ago

You can take the top off on a sunny day, too.

[–]SkyHawkMkIV 1 point2 points ago

You totally want to fuck that FR-S bitch, don't you?

[–]Dandrift89 96 points97 points ago

I just stopped by to thank you for calling my miata a sports car.

[–]YadaYadaSex 3 points4 points ago

ITT: People who know about cars and A LOT of people who think they know about cars.

[–]holyerthanthou 0 points1 point ago

Actually, there are a lot of us here on reddit that know about cars.

[–]Dandrift89 0 points1 point ago

That is true. I've been a car Guy for the last 8 years. I'm fully devoted to my lady and fixing also driving cars.

[–]theyoyomaster 48 points49 points ago

It's funny how you can tell which people here aren't car people. Anyone who puts down the Miata saying it's not a sports car is both insecure about their own car and wildly ignorant in what makes a car fun. Anyone who knows sports cars sees the Miata as the logical first (and sometimes final) step into a lifelong passion for speed. Just make sure you don't go Miata bashing on a car community like Jalopnik, it will not end well for you.

[–]barjam 18 points19 points ago

It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. Yea Miatas are sports cars period.

[–]JLHarvHarv 3 points4 points ago

I prefer my Mr2 N/A over miatas. My friends had their whole brigade of them, tried driving one didn't like it. Toyota is for me.

[–]EntroperZero 1 point2 points ago

Not sure why you were downvoted. Mister Two is definitely in the lightweight, RWD, fun as hell category.

[–]JLHarvHarv -2 points-1 points ago

It seems the hivemind prefers miatas

[–]SelectivelyOblivious 0 points1 point ago

I'm a Miata owner and think both are excellent.

[–]JLHarvHarv 1 point2 points ago

My friend recently got his license and his first car its probably gonna be a miata

[–]Brykly 0 points1 point ago

Indeed, and to borrow on the auto philosophies of James May: a car is most fun when it's right on the edge of its performance capabilities. You have to be on a track to push an M3 or a 911. All you need to push something with skinny tires and an underpowered engine is a roundabout.

[–]moldylocks 0 points1 point ago

He would have loved my '63 Corvair. It was pushing its performance capabilities when parked. It was the most terrifyingly fun car I have ever owned.

[–]qovneob -2 points-1 points ago

Thats why i always keep my eye open for a good condition geo metro. Sure it looks like a little puddle jumper shitbox but it weighs like 27lbs and you could get a whole lot of hoon out of that

[–]ThuggieHuggies 1 point2 points ago

Are you kidding me? It's a fucking Geo Metro.

A) Good condition Metros don't exist because they came from the factory as a shitbox. B) There is no hooning to be done in one. 0-60 seriously takes like 20 seconds. It has a 3-cylinder engine, man.

[–]qovneob 1 point2 points ago

thats why you swap the engine for an SHO or Hayabusa

[–]ThuggieHuggies 0 points1 point ago

Eh, that's true. Still, though. I wouldn't want to be seen in one. To each his own.

[–]qovneob 1 point2 points ago

nobody would, thats partly what would make it such a great sleeper

[–]Mustangwhallop 7 points8 points ago

The answer to every question is miata

[–]holyerthanthou 4 points5 points ago

You can make fun of it... But god damn it, you WILL respect it.

Edit: what is truly sad is I've had more fun driving experiences in my 92' k1500 than most people have had in their "racecar" civics, or expensive beamers. It makes me a little sad inside to see sports cars, gts, and the such have so much wasted potential.

[–]Ed_Tivrusky_IV 2 points3 points ago

The Miata is in a handling division, all by itself. That said, it doesn't really have that oomph that I crave.

It is sporty, but without some serious work, it can't really hang. That's not to say it isn't a superbly fun drive, because it is.

My old 3 was a blast, and we called it the go-kart, because you could lean it into any corner, brakeless, and it would come out fine.

Can't say the same with my WRX, but it's an entirely different topic.

[–]theyoyomaster 4 points5 points ago

Its still a sports car, just an entry level one.

[–]Ed_Tivrusky_IV 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. I still wish it had the Speed3 turbo :)

[–]theyoyomaster 1 point2 points ago

Nah, wankel ftw.

[–]patssle 2 points3 points ago

The Miata is in a handling division, all by itself.

Then if you think the Miata is great at handling - try a 914. Even lighter, lower, mid-engined, and no electronics helping you turn and brake. One of the best driving experiences possible.

But I'm slightly biased I own a Mazda 3 too but it's nothing compared to a Miata or 914.

[–]theyoyomaster 1 point2 points ago

You think the 914 is good? Try an Elise.

[–]Ed_Tivrusky_IV 1 point2 points ago

That price point jumps quite a bit. Though, you can find a used Elise in these parts for around $30k.

[–]theyoyomaster 3 points4 points ago

I got mine for $26k with 12k miles.

[–]Ed_Tivrusky_IV 1 point2 points ago

That's a great deal. I've never had the opportunity, but I hear Lotus really is the king of handling.

I have seen one of the few Exige's in New England, and that's something I'd really love to take a spin in.

[–]Ed_Tivrusky_IV 0 points1 point ago

Very nice!

Isn't driving without all the electronics a wildly different, yet enjoyable experience?

Sad to see that feel and passion slipping from my generation (being mid-20's)

[–]patssle 1 point2 points ago

And it's also easier and more fun to work on. I won't dare do major engine work on my Mazda 3. On another engine that I'll be transplanting into my 914 - I pulled the fuel injection off and installed carburetors. No sensors, no brains, and about 50 lbs less of wires. It sounds way better and the throttle response is superior.

I don't really know anybody in their 20s that works on their car. Everybody I know in the classic Porsche car scene is old!

[–]Ed_Tivrusky_IV 0 points1 point ago

I don't really know anybody in their 20s that works on their car. Everybody I know in the classic Porsche car scene is old!

That makes me sad. I am a sysadmin by trade, but do all my own car work; modifying and improving, to simple maintenance. It saves me a ton of money, helps me better understand the tech behind my car, and allows me learn something totally different. If you don't break it, you can't fix it!

This weekend is a much needed/anticipated fluid day... I just wish gear oil wasn't so damn expensive!

[–]Alsandr 0 points1 point ago

23 and I love working on my car! It's a 1.8T Jetta, though...

[–]moldylocks 0 points1 point ago

The 914-6 was awesome.

[–]catsfive 0 points1 point ago

This. I think I love you. Same with motorcycle people. I love riding my classic 2-stroke 200cc 1979 Vespa. It's balls to the wall. You have to be really smart when riding these things. They can go 100 km/h. My big BMW R1200GS is fun to ride, too, but I'm rarely balls out on it. Cars and bikes--to a real fan of them, as you say--are like golf clubs. They SHOULD come in all sizes for different things.

[–]bucketheadwendy 15 points16 points ago

It sounds great--until you try to use the GPS and you have to spend 10 minutes explaining why you're going there and who else is going and if there are going to be other cars and OH GOD YOU'RE GETTING TRADE-IN QUOTES AREN'T YOU

[–]waeva 20 points21 points ago

"oh you want to go to work?

you can't go without me"

[–]roffle_copter 14 points15 points ago

A sports car (sportscar or sport car) is a small, usually two seat, two door automobile designed for spirited performance and nimble handling. Sports cars may be spartan or luxurious but high maneuverability and minimum weight are requisite

[–]goeasyonme 12 points13 points ago

I did a service on one of these today. I'm a mazda technician. It's great cars. They are about having Fun. And MX-5 does exacly that.

[–]holyerthanthou 5 points6 points ago

:D I'm a Mazda parts guy...

It's good to see other Mazda employees around.

[–]goeasyonme 1 point2 points ago

Nice :) but not swedish right?

[–]holyerthanthou 1 point2 points ago

no... I'm a utahn ('murican). Mazda bro fist from across the pond.

[–]goeasyonme 1 point2 points ago

Brofist back! but hey, mazda in the US got bunch of cool engines that we don't like V6 right?

[–]holyerthanthou 0 points1 point ago

Yup, 3 litre. It's a blast... Not quite as much as the turbo 4 cylinder or the rotary, but a blast nonetheless (my grandmother has a 2010 with a v6).

The issue is is that it was a ford motor so I don't think it'll be in the new 6s sadly.

[–]goeasyonme 0 points1 point ago

I think I read something about a skyactive Rotary somewhere. With more punch in it. Could be wrong. I can only store so little in memory.

[–]holyerthanthou 0 points1 point ago

I don't think that is possible, sky active technology is built completely on the principle of a piston driven engine.

[–]goeasyonme 0 points1 point ago

Well, true. but link to a article. It's not the 14:1 compression rate etc and it's a completely different engine, but I guess you could make awesome rotary and just call it sky-active?

[–]holyerthanthou 0 points1 point ago

True, it is just a name.

On a side note, 90% of rotary owners do not know how to properly maintain it and it severely russles my jimmies.

[–]Moosefeathers 4 points5 points ago

Im looking into a mazdaspeed 3 for my next car, and im buying used... anything i should look for specifically when i test drive ?

[–]goeasyonme 1 point2 points ago

service records.

[–]Loring -1 points0 points ago

Yeah a WRX...

[–]MC_Fetch 4 points5 points ago

He said used, so no. As much as I love the WRX and STI's, most have been beat and razzed by "Hurr-Durr I have a rally car" monster energy bros.

Find one with even 50,000km on it and I'll bet you it was a hard driven 50k.

[–]Loring 0 points1 point ago

lol yeah you are probably right, but I also feel like MS3 kids aren't much different I have a couple buddies that have them...bottom line people that drive wrx/sti/ms3's...have a tendency to abuse them a bit, but yah i would be weary to buy any one of them with too many miles on it. I'd say under 20K miles and if it's still stock you are probably ok.

[–]Submkt -1 points0 points ago

I 2nd this. Currently looking to trade my speed3 in for a 'stang 5.0.

[–]moogy12 6 points7 points ago

it has really good traction control

[–]Pays4Porn 21 points22 points ago

And anti-breakup locks.

[–]duBiYou -1 points0 points ago

Seeing from the downvotes in my previous comment im guessing no one got the joke, referring to pays4porns name.

[–]duBiYou -4 points-3 points ago

You know you can bootleg porn now right?

[–]artificialsnow 0 points1 point ago

If only you could find one that had child-proof locks. Children should not be escaping from there unless you want them to...

[–]holyerthanthou 0 points1 point ago

It doesn't have rear doors... Sooo... Yeaaaah.

[–]rawrlos 0 points1 point ago

You mean attraction control.

[–]Pyr0monk3y 4 points5 points ago

I love my miata! I have a '91, the original miata.

YES, they are sports cars, they will keep up with vettes on a twisty road or tight track. Sports car does not mean high horsepower or even fast, it means all around balance and driver friendliness. If it has good input feedback, 50/50 weight dist. and a properly laid out driver inputs than it is a sports car.

[–]Surprise_Lobotomy 9 points10 points ago

[–]incer 6 points7 points ago

Well... She's gorgeous anyway.

[–]Evilmaze 3 points4 points ago

The crazier they are the kinkier they get. Don't they?

[–]incer -2 points-1 points ago

I'm merely commenting on her looks... If she's truly crazy, I might be... wary.

[–]Leave-A-Note 4 points5 points ago

I will never look at a Miata the same away again.

[–]mobuco 7 points8 points ago

Almost as good as the celica one.

[–]MrGoodbytes 4 points5 points ago

I think the Mazda 3 has a creepy smile too.

[–]SneakyChef 2 points3 points ago

Do suspect the new Mazda3s were modeled to look like toads from the front.

[–]mattsbox60 0 points1 point ago

I really, really want one of these to replace my Mitsubishi Lancer. Too bad I'm a poor University student.

[–]IronLung420 0 points1 point ago

Cannot unsee.

[–]snakebite99 3 points4 points ago

I saw you looking at a Porsche..

[–]KambioN 5 points6 points ago

That's the final straw, the Mazda "smile" has to end.

[–]spartan2100 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, definitely not a fan. My 3 is one of the last without the "Joker face fish" style fronts and I am so glad I did not wait one more year to buy...

[–]HalosFan 2 points3 points ago

I really like it on the Miata because it has the "girl car stigma," so when Mustang drivers get toasted on country roads it feels extra bad for them.

[–]beeayoutifullove 1 point2 points ago

My boyfriend got his speed3 smile painted the same black as the rest of his car just so it was harder to see.

[–]holyerthanthou 1 point2 points ago

They're coming out with an AMAZING new body stile in the next few years that look fucking amazing.

[–]BaylorLaw09 2 points3 points ago

Ever noticed that all new Mazdas are smiling?

[–]BebopBigShot 7 points8 points ago

So are their owners...

High FIVE ! (inside joke) (the Miata wave)

[–]Adagi -1 points0 points ago

The car hates you for looking at other cars.

[–]holyerthanthou 7 points8 points ago

If you own a Miata you never look at other cars anyway.

[–]FoxBattalion79 -1 points0 points ago

I saw you looking at that miada

[–]Defcon458 -1 points0 points ago

This actually made me lol

Thanks Mazda.

[–]tracerghost00 2 points3 points ago

Mazda MX-5 Miata...

[–]IOUaUsername 4 points5 points ago

MX-5 NC to be exact.

I wish they'd make a coupe of this, it'd be probably 100kg lighter, and thus faster. Probably lots cheaper too.

[–]sderrickson 2 points3 points ago

the miata will never not be a roadster.

also, the ND miata is going to be under 2200 lbs and have 167 hp.

[–]Clueless_Father 1 point2 points ago

a) nice double negative! Try "the Miata/MX-5 will always be a roadster" b) we have absolutely no idea what the ND is going to be. We know it is projected to be the typical Miata goal of light weight and reasonably powerful engine, and the new goal of better fuel efficiency c) I upvoted you to counteract someone's downvote

[–]Clueless_Father 1 point2 points ago

Those are all goals. The difference is that you made a statement of fact that is not yet reality. The ND is projected to be under 2200 lbs and have 167 hp - we shall see if they hit their goal. All the articles you quote use statements like "reportedly".

Anyway, thanks for all those links. Some good reading there!

[–]sderrickson 0 points1 point ago

you should read the jalopnik article about it too. to lazy to look it up sorry.

[–]BebopBigShot -1 points0 points ago

I call my car the MX-5 Mazda Miata Eunos Roadster Overseas it wears all these badges on it's ass. I love my car, I respect it, and I will call it by it's FULL NAME !

I'm never gonna sell it... I'm still saving up for a V-8 conversion _

[–]MatFrapper -4 points-3 points ago

A miata is not a sports car...

[–]SelectivelyOblivious 0 points1 point ago

Lies.
