Well, it was also based on the Manson family murders, where a group of strangers showed up to a remote house and stabbed all of the inhabitants to death (much like in the movie).

edit to add: to me the scariest part of the movie is taken from the Manson family murders - the fact that the victims did nothing wrong and were killed because someone wanted to kill

[–]parksidekilla 19 points20 points ago

The Strangers was marketed as "inspired by true events", which is almost always confused as "based on a true story".

[–]chrono1465 23 points24 points ago

Inspired by true events = the most meaningless phrase in movie advertising.

[–]kampfy3 17 points18 points ago

One of the characters ate something before aliens facefucked their dog. People have eaten things before.

inspired by true events

[–]Nougat 8 points9 points ago

I'd lay money that someone has facefucked a dog before, too.

[–]phreeck 0 points1 point ago

Show me proof.

[–]parksidekilla 1 point2 points ago

exactly, but it's a tactic used to spark people's interest.

[–]Fyrus 4 points5 points ago

How is it the worst offender? It's very realistic, very possible, and similar things have actually happened...

[–]89eightnine 2 points3 points ago

That is silly, of course it is realistic, very possible and similar things may have happened, but they didn't which is the point. The movie is about a married couple terrorized and killed on their wedding night, a far cry from someone having the wrong address. By this logic every story in the history of time is inspired by true events.

[–]Enviirted 0 points1 point ago

Just a little side note, it wasn't their wedding night. He had proposed to her and she said no/we should wait, or something along those lines, and that's why he calls his friend to pick them up that night.

[–]Fyrus -1 points0 points ago

the movie itself never claimed it was a true event, just that it was inspired by them. I don't see what's wrong with that... You couldn't say that Blade Runner was inspired by true events...

[–]ghastlyactions 2 points3 points ago

False. Worst offender ever was "The Perfect Storm." 45 minutes into the movie they lose contact by radio with the Enola Gay which subsequently sinks... they by default MUST have invented 2/3 of that movie (and probably most of the first 1/3). They were actually sued for the way they portrayed the captain in that movie (without any evidence).

[–]Alvins_Hot_Juicebox_ 18 points19 points ago

Don't you know? Anchorman was based on a true story too - only all people, places, and events were changed.

[–]kampfy3 8 points9 points ago

This is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to people, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

Especially you, Jenny Beckman.

Bitch.

[–]Dienekes00 3 points4 points ago

God, I love-hate that movie.

[–]beanswiggin 2 points3 points ago

The expectation vs reality scene is one of the most powerful and gut-wrenching moments ever.

[–]Dienekes00 5 points6 points ago

Ugh. The director knew what the hell he was doing.

[–]TheClayroo 35 points36 points ago

Could tell which gif it was through thumbnail; opened anyways because she's beautiful.

[–]dalaio 10 points11 points ago

What is the origin of this gif. What was the thumbs up originally a reaction to?

[–]alfonsoelsabio 5 points6 points ago

I heard that it was in response to an audience member yelling out a marriage proposal. The person who said it didn't have a source though.

[–]Jewlzeh 1 point2 points ago

I would also love to know this!

[–]StewartKruger 1 point2 points ago

I tried to find it. Unsuccessful.

[–]K1dn3yPunch 3 points4 points ago

I can picture the original creator of this gif just smirking as he deleted the ONLY video of this event. He then proceeded to laugh maniacally at the thought of all who would search for the source of his popular creation without sucess.

[–]shortbuswizard 6 points7 points ago

The Possession coming up soon.

[–]rocketcraft 4 points5 points ago

Last House on the Left claims to be based on a true story, but it is actually based on another movie called Virgin Spring or something similar.

[–]joewaffle1 4 points5 points ago

Gifs teach us all how to read lips well.

[–]Falcon555123 3 points4 points ago

This is how I feel reading 90% of the post titles on Reddit to be honest :/

[–]Lord_of_Womba 2 points3 points ago

Who is that?

[–]do_not_follow 7 points8 points ago

Jennifer Lawrence

[–]Lord_of_Womba 6 points7 points ago

Ah, so I was right. I've seen this gif several times before but this time I recognized her (I just watched The Hunger Games yesterday).

[–]FacebookScavenger -2 points-1 points ago

Watched it on my college campus yesterday, also. High five!

[–]wekR 4 points5 points ago

omg u guys are liek le besties now xD

[–]FacebookScavenger -1 points0 points ago

I know! We should meet up!

[–]caseyfacehead 6 points7 points ago

every time i see this gif its like I can actually hear her say okay.

[–]SamMustacheMan 6 points7 points ago

Source?

[–]Zomonada 1 point2 points ago

This is because of The Apparition right?

[–]BG40[S] 10 points11 points ago

That, and the new one where the girl is possessed by opening a box.

[–]BCP27 4 points5 points ago

Man, I just watched the trailer for The Apparition and feel like so much potential was already missed in that movie. The first 30 seconds make it seem like it will be a creative, slow burn, horror set in one room. Psychological, creative horror.

Then it went full retard.

[–]UpvoteHere 7 points8 points ago

FULL retard. When you see shit, it makes it less scary. The horror must be psychological and elusive.

[–]BCP27 5 points6 points ago

Seriously, they should spend the whole movie in that room wondering whether or not shit was actually going down. Make them suspect and hate each other as well, no one can be trusted.

I am now definitely going into film. I can do a better job than these hacks and I'm going to prove it.

[–]UpvoteHere 4 points5 points ago

Thank you. Please, if you need help, allow me to do so. I have tried explaining this to many people, but am always greeted with "if you didn't see, it'd be boring".

Let's say you're being haunted in real life. That'd be scary as shit. But only because you don't understand it. If you saw it often, it'd no longer be scary.

It needs to be a "wtf is happening?!" Moment not a "that's happening. Oh" moment

[–]OCELLARIS_CLOWNING 0 points1 point ago

I don't know about you, but I'd be scared out of my fucking mind if a decrepit chick with a tongue but no mouth grabbed my face with her rotting hands.

[–]UpvoteHere 0 points1 point ago

I'd like it.

[–]formerlylurkinlurker 0 points1 point ago

The only reason this movie is "based on true events" is because the box is said to keep an evil spirit in it. When the door is opened the spirit is released, this is the ONLY part of the movie that is "true." Its explained in the entertainment magazine.

[–]BeondTheGrave 1 point2 points ago

Is her name Pandora? It better be Pandora. Id flip my shit if it wasnt Pandora.

[–]Madpony 2 points3 points ago

It's gotten to the point that this is said in nearly every horror movie preview. I always assume it's because there's some mundane plot point in the film that is based on true events, yet it has nothing to do with the actual horror.

[–]Yggdrazzil 2 points3 points ago

I've always been wondering about this, what did Jennifer Lawrence respond to, when she did that?

[–]Yggdrazzil 1 point2 points ago

Thanks! May the upvotes be forever in your favour!

[–]Gruebenfunk 0 points1 point ago

I just like to believe things. relevant

[–]Metallivane -1 points0 points ago

Sometimes I listen to George Noorey, and the other night he had on the director and producer of the film "The Apparition". They conducted an experiment involving amplification of brain waves in an attempt to conjure up a spirit from an object, or something... Long story short, they actually made progress (which took a week to become apparent), and for the first time in a long time, the hair on the back of my neck actually stood up just from listening to a story... the film is going to be exaggerated, of course... I just wish they made a movie portraying EXACTLY what went down in the real experiment, and the subsequent results... That alone would have been a hell of a movie.

[–]baker781 0 points1 point ago

How about Wolf Creek?

[–]dustt10 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, that sucked. "Based on true events"? The writer admitted in an interview that he wrote it before even being aware of those true events.

[–]baker781 0 points1 point ago

Nah, he had started to write it, then changed his story so it reflected more on Ivan Milat.

[–]dustt10 0 points1 point ago

Not to seem like a dick who is splitting hairs but he did write it:

Greg McLean: I wrote the original story five, six years ago and it was pretty much a standard horror thriller set in the Outback. Then over the years I heard about a couple of true cases that happened in Australia, one of them being the Ivan Milat case which is about a serial killer who would pick up hitchhikers on lonely highways and take them out into the woods and do horrific things to them.

[–]CPU1 0 points1 point ago

The key word is "story" rather than "events".

[–]Weesel 0 points1 point ago

1.) Who is that actress I know her from something? 2.) A movie called Wolf Creek really is based off true events, although fairly briefly. It is based in the way of the campers were hunted down by a psycho in Wolf Creek, Australia.

[–]XAmsterdamX 1 point2 points ago

Jennifer Lawrence, Hunger Games.

[–]Weesel 0 points1 point ago

Thank you my kind sir

[–]DawginYourMomma 0 points1 point ago

The names haven't been changed to protect the victims...based on a true story.

[–]declan1596 0 points1 point ago

Does anyone know what interview this is from for context?

[–]Pumpkin_Pie 0 points1 point ago

Everytime I see this gif re-posted I feel like this

[–]thechapattack 0 points1 point ago

It is based on a true story in the fact the story its based on has people in it with names and they lived somewhere at one time....see totally the same

[–]liberterrorism 0 points1 point ago

When I saw that in The Exorcism of Emily Rose I just thought: wow, so they basically killed some schizophrenic girl by not giving her proper medical treatment.

[–]TreePooper 0 points1 point ago

Does anyone know what event this gif is from?

[–]dontchoke 1 point2 points ago

she is gif friendly

[–]Tralan 0 points1 point ago

"The Exorcism of Emily Rose" and "The Rite." Both were awful movies. And unless you were a diehard Catholic, any sane person wouldn't accept them as being based on anything.

[–]djdvenom -1 points0 points ago

[–]lraish 0 points1 point ago

I like her, but at the same time I don't like her. I would lovingly hate-fuck her.

[–]phreeck 0 points1 point ago

I seriously think that movies, especially horror movies, that are "based on a true story" or "inspired by real events" are always the worst. They use this because they want people to think it's real and it's a cheap gimmick used to try to make it scarier without actually making it scarier. I also think that it tends to be a creative crutch so writers don't actually have to think of something on their own they just Frankenstein it.

The only movie that ever really creeped me out was one that I can't even remember the name of. All I can recall from it was that a young boy and girl are playing doctor in a room, it cuts to a shot of the gap of the bottom of the door and blood starts running under it. It had other moments that I remember freaking me out but I can't remember because it was 10+ years ago and I was a kid.

[–]AsadM107 1 point2 points ago

IP man is the worst offender. The movie was so, so good, but the truth was so far from it. It was about a Kung Fu master who basically reinvented the movement with his technique and even trained Bruce Lee. This was completely true, but the movie sensationalized him by not only making him going into epic fights (which admittedly, was bound to happen), but actually defeat the japanese occupation during WW2 by fighting the Jap general. The second movie was him fighting a boxer in Hong Kong. The truth really spoiled an excellent movie.

[–]HumanistGeek -2 points-1 points ago

What's with the hands and phone that appear at the bottom of the screen in the middle of the animation?

[–]UpvoteHere 8 points9 points ago

They're taking a picture of her. What year are you from?

[–]HumanistGeek 0 points1 point ago

I've just never noticed that part of the gif before.

[–]Munchlaxatives 0 points1 point ago

Don't feel bad. For some reason, I thought she was wearing a swan dress the first time I saw it. http://i1-news.softpedia-static.com/images/news2/Bjork-s-Swan-Dress-Will-Be-Auctioned-For-Charity-2.jpg
