Platypodes .

[–]Jaraxo 4 points5 points ago

*platypuses.

[–]Jaraxo 4 points5 points ago

This old chestnut again, I swear I'm the only one who actually watched the Merriam Webster video where this -podes thing started from, over Octopuses/Octopi/Octopodes. She clearly states that when a word is taken into the English language it is inflected like other words in the English language, so while using the -podes suffix works on a technical level, in reality, Platypuses would be the actual use.

edit: See the original video here.

[–]krangles 9 points10 points ago

Meh, I still prefer Platypi

[–]NGeX 4 points5 points ago

Second this Platypi sounds more correct that Platypodes

[–]shneebs 2 points3 points ago

I agree, Platypi sounds better

[–]GMonsoon 5 points6 points ago

Sounds better AND sounds like a snack! What's not to like?

[–]shneebs 1 point2 points ago

You my friend deserve that upvote!

platypussies

[–]Choking_Smurf 0 points1 point ago

It's origin may not be Greek, so it may very well be platypi

[–]andrewsmith1986 2 points3 points ago

Link to the video?

[–]Jaraxo 1 point2 points ago

edited with link.

[–]Dukelicious 0 points1 point ago

You're right. According to Wiki, he's either rare or pedantic, I'm leaning towards the latter.

[–]Choking_Smurf 0 points1 point ago

That video when I first saw it was the best 2 or 3 minutes ive spent on the Internet , oh and platypuses is grammatically correct for those who won't watch the video

[–]Dukelicious 0 points1 point ago

Aaaaand if we go up a level:

platypus (plural: platypuses, or platypus; common, pseudo-latin: platypi; rare, pedantic: platypodes)

(emphasis mine)

[–]andrewsmith1986 1 point2 points ago

A pedant is a person who is excessively concerned with formalism and precision

Nothing wrong with that.

[–]Dukelicious 0 points1 point ago

It still isn't a good reason to correct people who are correct in their usage. Also, if you're feeling pedantic today, you should have pointed out that these are puggles.

I would argue that this isn't even proper pedantry, it is linguistic hipsterism. "It's a little used variation, you've probably never heard of it."

[–]andrewsmith1986 0 points1 point ago

He said it as a singular and I said it as a plural.

Because there are two.

[–]Dukelicious 0 points1 point ago

Platypus is also the plural of platypus.

[–]pauciloquent 3 points4 points ago

*platypussies

[–]SharktopusHunter 0 points1 point ago

We have a platypussy riot of pluralities.

[–]goodguyguitarist 0 points1 point ago

Platypusen. Obviously.

[–]XavierScorpionIkari 5 points6 points ago

This is now the SIXTH time.... and we have become exceedingly efficient at it... Blah blah blah.

[–]JayGold 6 points7 points ago

Fun fact: Baby monotremes (Egg laying mammals) are called puggles. That is the cutest sounding word I've ever heard.

[–]TheSlothGeneral 3 points4 points ago

Another fun fact, platypuses (platypi?) have poisonous spikes on their hind legs.

[–]Jyaketto 2 points3 points ago

Only males.

[–]greiger 0 points1 point ago

I was just about to say that I still had no clue where they had the poisonous spikes/claws/whateveritis on their body... thanks for that.

[–]ujelly_fish 0 points1 point ago

Isn't puggle also a "designer dog" mix of a pug and a poodle?

[–]JayGold 0 points1 point ago

That, too.
