When the gif was still loading and it was in extra slow motion, I thought Thor was trying to do some fancy flip with the hammer for a bit.

[–]greenyellowbird 39 points40 points ago

I heard Thor won a talent competition by twirling a flaming baton.

[–]GideonJWells 6 points7 points ago

Ditto. It would have been epic if he had recovered and they actually used the clip.

[–]StupidHaiku 6 points7 points ago

I watched it "load" three

times before I noticed it

was in slow motion.

[–]bnfdsl 268 points269 points ago

how does he catch the shield so effortlessly?

[–]chestnutbrother 220 points221 points ago

[–]foips 380 points381 points ago

props to the guys who still CGI'd up a clearly fudged shot!

[–]Magzter 105 points106 points ago

That's just unbelievable. The shield looks so real.

[–]BigRobb 55 points56 points ago

yea it does. I thought it was on a line or something. amazing.

[–]Pak-O 19 points20 points ago

I was wondering why the shield came at him so fast, yet the hammer was so slow.

[–]medioxcore 13 points14 points ago

that's what i thought. it never even crossed my mind that it could be cgi.

crazy.

[–]roflbbq 15 points16 points ago

Especially since its from an out take, right?

[–]sir_joe_cool 17 points18 points ago

I think the thing that really sells it is both Chris' reaction to catching it, the sort of brace he gets, and then his clothes sort of respond as well (probably also CGI) But yeah, this is CGI done very right.

Although, I have to say, the shield absorbs all vibration, so it really shouldn't make clothes ripple or make any sounds when it hit's anything, but I understand that they had to make it do those for visual effect.

[–]Ceadol 6 points7 points ago

Yeah but if it absorbs all vibration, it shouldn't bounce off of walls either, as far as my weak knowledge of physics go. So it's kind of a suspension of disbelief thing in this instance.

[–]sir_joe_cool 5 points6 points ago

Actually, it can, but that is all in the way he throws it. It goes along the lines of "an object in motion stays in motion" So yeah, he can't really do an exact bounce, it has to ricochet and have a certain spin to it.

[–]HyzerFlip 13 points14 points ago

As a disc golfer... I love disc physics.

[–]Dentarthurdent42 2 points3 points ago

Wait, if it absorbs all vibration, how does it reflect bullets? Surely they'd simply fall to the ground after hitting if all kinetic energy were absorbed...

[–]Ceadol 2 points3 points ago

That's exactly what I was getting at with this. If I'm looking at this correctly (and I might not be), the shield shouldn't be able to ricochet off of objects because it would absorb the kinetic energy that should send it bouncing off of a wall or skull. It SHOULD just fall flat.

[–]WalterFStarbuck 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I wouldn't expect any metal to absorb energy. Those are usually limited to things like foams and rubbers that have really high damping. In engineering we use "Constrained Layer Dampers" a lot to accomplish the same basic idea in structures that will encounter vibration.

It could well be two sides of a strong metal with a high damping material between or many layers like that, but a single solid metal is not something I would expect to simply absorb momentum or vibration. Instead I would expect it to be very stiff and resonate loudly like a cymbal.

[–]Dentarthurdent42 0 points1 point ago

Oh, I'm aware that it's not realistic for metal to behave that way, but I seem to remember the shield deflecting bullets, rather than the bullets just stopping dead, so if it's supposed to absorb all vibrations, I don't see how it (or any other damping material) could have an elastic collision to deflect bullets.

[–]WalterFStarbuck 0 points1 point ago

As long as the bullets don't hit dead on, they're going to retain some component of velocity tangent to the shield. Depending on how you decide to apply the magic 'vibranium' properties that deflection is either allowed or not allowed. There's not really a concrete description of how the shield works that's infallible canon as far as I know (but I'm not a reader of many comics) so there isn't really a way to say whether bullet deflection really makes sense or not.

I can tell you, however, that a real shield like that would either pulverize bullets that can't penetrate it if they strike close enough to straight on or be shattered and/or deflected whole if they were grazing blows.

Real world bullet-energy absorption is what you see in bullet-resistant plastics like Lexan. They don't shatter like glass, but they permanently deform ("yield") and disperse large amounts of energy The deformation is pretty localized so they can take a lot of damage before suffering a real failure. But if his shield were made of Lexan for instance, he'd need at least an inch thick or so to be really safe. The nice thing is that he could certainly paint it with metallic paint or use a dye during the manufacturing process. But it certainly wouldn't bounce well. It would work more like a conventional shield -- useful when held between you and your enemy and little else. Good thing Cap is willing to carry firearms.

[–]EmpiresBane 0 points1 point ago

Well, the clothes would ripple because as it's sliding on, it's pushing some of his suit up his arm.

[–]indyK1ng 0 points1 point ago

I think they goofed and the line really should have been "redirects all vibration" so in the center bullets come to a dead stop but on the edges they seem to bounce off (which I think we really see happen).

[–]sir_joe_cool 1 point2 points ago

Line

I don't know if you know this, but before they made a movie, they used to actually print Captain America comics, not long before the film though. He's only been in print (where in it is explicitly stated that his shield is made of vibranium, a metal that * absorbs* metal) since the 1940s, so I suppose it's an easy mistake to make and I won't Hulk out on you or anything.

[–]indyK1ng 0 points1 point ago

I am aware, I just think that as a chance to write something that makes more sense it was a lost opportunity.

[–]sir_joe_cool 0 points1 point ago

I grew up, waiting for this that movie since I was 7, a lot of it was disappointing, but overall I was happy, then ecstatic at Avengers. But if, in the Captain movie, they had said his shield "redirects all vibration" I would poop into my popcorn, then mix it up, then throw it at the screen for the rest of the film. Then I would poop into a blender, liquefy it, then sneak it into the head writer's water supply in such small amounts that him and his family wouldn't notice, but first. Then I would do some standard murdering and such.

[–]skonen_blades 1 point2 points ago

I've watched it a bunch now and I still can't believe it's CG. That is REALLY well done.

[–]dubbledutch 265 points266 points ago

'OK, here we go. Hemsworth, make sure you're ready! Film is expensive, and we don't want to fuck this shot up!'

'What about me Joss?'

'Evans? Ah forget about it, we'll just edit a shield in later on. Just look fancy.'

'But-'

'GOD DAMN IT HEMSWORTH! JUST SHUT UP AND CATCH THE FUCKING HAMMER!!'

'......ok'

[–]TerdSandwich 34 points35 points ago

Well, with ILM and Weta doing your CGI, this was probably done during a coffee break. Those guys are all computer geniuses.

[–]toebox 21 points22 points ago

They are, for sure, but don't underestimate just how much work that took.

[–]SQUID_FUCKER 27 points28 points ago

It took 9 months and $46 million dollars to get that shot.

[–]Aihwa 5 points6 points ago

You know you've found your calling when doing lots of work is fun and rewarding in its own right.

[–]RazsterOxzine 0 points1 point ago

Too true, they're masters of their art. I've seen the custom software they use in a article - stunningly simple, but you have to know how to use it.

[–]Sneaky_Zebra 1 point2 points ago

Would of been done specificity for the Gag reel - makes it funnier if the Capt. looks like he's doing it right.

[–]slipperyfist 30 points31 points ago

Wow, this is the first time I've actually been fooled by CGI, very impressive.

[–]TerraAustralis 82 points83 points ago

How would you know the other times?

[–]The-Mathematician 52 points53 points ago

Well, he was fooled in Jurassic Park until someone told him.

[–]nadel69 21 points22 points ago

Wait... what?

[–]-TheObvious- 41 points42 points ago

The dinosaurs aren't real.

[–]nadel69 17 points18 points ago

Well, at least I'm helping some Nigerian guy transfer his money here so I will be rich. Screw you guys, I got millions coming my way.

[–]1corn 9 points10 points ago

Movie is really old. Still possible it's a dinosaur movie with cgi humans. Who knows.

[–]Fisheries_Student 6 points7 points ago

Christ, man. Use the spoiler tags.

[–]chefmcduck 4 points5 points ago

Wayne Knight isn't real either. He's an animatronic.

[–]tiffanydisasterxoxo 0 points1 point ago

I thought some of the dinosaurs were puppets. :/

[–]Journeyman42 2 points3 points ago

A lot of the dinosaur shots were with animatronics. Basically, if the dinosaur wasn't walking/running around in that movie, it was an animatronic. They built a full-sized T-Rex model, for example.

[–]SpermWhale 1 point2 points ago

They are put there by the devil to test your faith.

[–]slipperyfist 2 points3 points ago

Touche.

[–]KraiserX -5 points-4 points ago

upvotes for you

[–]jojojoy 5 points6 points ago

This is just the first time you've noticed.

[–]slipperyfist 4 points5 points ago

Possibly. I know there are a lot of times CGI is used in backgrounds fairly seamlessly, but I normally notice when it's a prominent part of the action. Though, there really is no way to know if I've been fooled before.

[–]shutup_Aragorn -1 points0 points ago

have you ever seen any car commercial, ever?

[–]RibsNGibs 1 point2 points ago

You've been fooled before, 100% guaranteed. I would say you probably don't notice >50% of the CGI you see.

[–]Jweisblat 2 points3 points ago

Go watch Citizen Kane. It is a mindfuck of cgi techniques before they had cgi.

[–]colacube 90 points91 points ago

Thor looks skilful in reverse.

[–]ChiperSoft 6 points7 points ago

It's like he's playing hackysack with the hammer.

[–]RazsterOxzine 1 point2 points ago

Awesome!

Well, fuck him then.

[–]McD419 27 points28 points ago

[–]grayaus 6 points7 points ago

Now if only your sex life was like that.

[–]minercrafter2 11 points12 points ago

Forgive me if I'm misinformed, but a copyright claim by Disney?

[–]Raviede 70 points71 points ago

Disney owns Marvel I think. Or they're partners, or Walt Disney hates Jews I forget.

[–]Last_Years_Villain 5 points6 points ago

Can't it be both? (He was a known friend of Hitler)

[–]ThatFuh_Qr 10 points11 points ago

So was Henry Ford, but most people forget about that.(and he even helped manufacture the Nazi war machine)

[–]thenewiBall 2 points3 points ago

Source?

[–]thenewiBall 0 points1 point ago

Oh yeah that seems legitimate

[–]tiffanydisasterxoxo 2 points3 points ago

In 2009, Disney bought the Marvel parent company.

Oh, Di$ney.

[–]motney 5 points6 points ago

Being forced to watch that first loop in slow motion was torture. Just grab it it's right there!!

[–]darthdalecooper 2 points3 points ago

I've seen this gif around 3 million times today from various sources. I'm still okay with it.

[–]symbiotics 2 points3 points ago

gotta say, his juggling skills are awesome

[–]watership 2 points3 points ago

Chris Evans is fucking incredible as Captain America. He's still my favourite part of that movie, in a movie stuffed with great character moments.

[–]StonedWooki3 3 points4 points ago

Watch this gif with the song On Melancholy Hill in the background/

[–]sayfoo 2 points3 points ago

Watch anything with On Melancholy Hill in the background. FTFY

[–]psion0027 0 points1 point ago

I love that song! Does that only work when the gif is in slo-mo?

[–]StonedWooki3 0 points1 point ago

Just works in general, there's something comedic and brilliant about it!

[–]Kylskap 2 points3 points ago

I wish he had tripped on his cape too.

Was wondering how long it would be before this was made into a gif.

[–]JennaIsMe 0 points1 point ago

[–]mcgroovy24 0 points1 point ago

how do you post gifs like this?

[–]Myrandall 0 points1 point ago

Could someone speed this up a bit? Double it, maybe?

[–]eggshelltiptoe 0 points1 point ago

dammit, Thor, quit dickin' around with your hammer!

[–]ilikewc3 0 points1 point ago

This looks familiar...

[–]oristhisjustfantasea 0 points1 point ago

[–]shortbuswizard 0 points1 point ago

How do they get the weapons to fly at them?

[–]SUPERsharpcheddar 0 points1 point ago

I don't get it, they animated a shield for a lost shot?

[–]couldntderp 0 points1 point ago

"Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. FUUUUUCK!...... shit."

[–]Abbadabbey 0 points1 point ago

Once it finally loaded, I watched it for 3 minutes and giggled the entire time. My coworkers think I'm nuts.

[–]tsfrederick 1 point2 points ago

someone make this to a "haters gonna ...shit ... shit .... fuck... shit ... DAMN IT"

[–]sharksfan93 -1 points0 points ago

Captain America isn't a god, Thor is

[–]Capt_Captcha 0 points1 point ago

I'm wondering how they got Captain's shield to fly so perfectly to his arm.

[–]electricmice 0 points1 point ago

i thought avengers would suck but i did watch it eventually and it was decent. i think the long action scene at the end worked because it had a lot of characters in it unlike the end of transformers that seemed to draw on forever. avengers worked about as well as a superhero movie can ever be.

[–]TheCoons 0 points1 point ago
