I'm not saying I agree with Larson's stance. He clearly just wants to continue making millions off the Far Side books without an internet gallery interfering with sales. I think he should be happy with the huge income he'd still produce if they were all online and the many millions he's already made. That being said, I wouldn't post one of his comics online because I respect the artist's decision. Conversely, I have no respect for movie studios (as an example) and thusly don't have a problem with film piracy.

Sure, but whether you would post one or not, it is clearly untenable in this day and age to expect to keep Larson comics off the internet. When they do inevitably get posted, I don't see lack of attribution being a major deal, because it's Gary Larson and the few people who don't know that can find out instantly from the comments.

The farther we get from The Far Side (no pun intended) the less that will be true though. It's scary to think that Far Side has been out of newspapers for 17 years. There are a lot of people reading this post who were born after Far Side ended. If people are going to post his work (and they are, of course), the attribution will help spread Far Side among a generation that came after. If people are going to disrespect his wishes about distribution, it seems reasonable to at least expect them to help inform new readers about the work so that they might eventually support Larson in the way he wishes them to.

Cartoonists as a whole are not. Larson is not every other cartoonist though. Far Side collections have sold (according to wikipedia) more than 45 million copies. Then there's all the merchandise and royalties and his actual salary from back when it was in production.

Not all cartoonists are Gary Larson, Charles Schultz or Jim Davis (ugh), but a few are, and they make millions off of their creations.

Again, the bulk of Larson's money is not from syndication, it's from the Far Side books (which is why he doesn't want his cartoons on the internet, duh) and merch. If 45 million far side books have been sold (with an average price of $15 or so, for a total gross of something like $675M), for him to have made "millions" off of these books, he would need to be making less than 5 cents of off every book sold. Do you honestly believe that Larson is not making at least that much off of his books?

The books with comics work a lot like CD's - the Artist syndicates and looses a lot of rights ( for a lot of protection and newspaper slots) - He probably made more money off each newspaper slot than each book. He might see a dollar per book, but that money is broken up not only over his career but also his checks would be cut when the company has re-invested his money. I'm not saying he's not rich - as he's a very intelligent man and probably saved the majority of his pennies - but nor is he sittin there rollin like a rock star either.

I didn't vote either way. My point was that attribution or lack of it is somewhat redundant with work as famous and distinctive as Gary Larson.
