Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

It's hard for me to wrap my head around the amount of disaster/wreckage/ruin in this pic.

[–]DiscoUnderpants 44 points45 points ago

This is one of my favourite photos of 9/11. Look at that wall of rubble behind them. Note I am not an American and that is not my flag... but for me that photo says fuck you terrorist arseholes, we will not be fucking stopped by you.

[–]sgSaysR 20 points21 points ago

This is the one that always gets to me. Taken 90 minutes after the second tower collapsed.

[–]narwhalsinspace 35 points36 points ago

Res doesn't like your link. FTFY

[–]opie2 2 points3 points ago

This one is the one I will never ever forget. Mychal Judge was the head chaplain of the NYFD, and was killed by falling debris while delivering last rites to another victim.

Edit: changed link to original photog's site, Shannon Stapleton, Reuters. RES doesn't like.

[–]Jer_Cough 4 points5 points ago

Thanks. That was the pic that hit me hard years ago too. David with a fire extinguisher against not only the immediate Goliath mess to deal with but also the shitstorm of stupid in the years ahead.

[–]Dekar2401 6 points7 points ago

That's why I think we should have rebuilt the towers, but taller.

[–]Sjgolf891 8 points9 points ago

WTC One is going to be taller, isn't it? Counting the spire at least

[–]Dekar2401 12 points13 points ago

1776 ft to be exact.

[–]canyounotsee 3 points4 points ago

I see what they did there

[–]Dekar2401 2 points3 points ago

I read your username in an Elite's voice from Halo 2. They say that a lot when you accidentally hit them while playing as the Arbiter.

[–]canyounotsee 1 point2 points ago

I approve of this comment

[–]CptOblivion 20 points21 points ago

Well... we Americans did sacrifice a lot of freedoms resulting from 9/11 (patriot act, anyone?) and there was rather a lot of widespread fear and borderline panic for some time after the event, so it seems to me we really were stopped by them.

[–]DiscoUnderpants 6 points7 points ago

Unfortunately the response of your own neighbours is something that needs to sometimes be countered with a great big fuck you. I have faith that the vast majority of Americans are sane and will sort this(I lived there in the pre and post 9/11 period). It's up to the sane to drown out the stupid and irrational and just plain dicks.

[–]ninjaneer76 4 points5 points ago

I feel like we are losing :(

[–]monsda 8 points9 points ago

As much as the Patriot act new NDAA, SOPA/PIPA, and so on pisses me off....it hasn't really affected me. I'm pretty damn free to go about my life.

[–]centerbleep 6 points7 points ago

consider them door openers... or stepping stones...

[–]LaxMike 5 points6 points ago

Ah, the snowball effect argument, always a valid point. Not just with this topic, but also with how legalizing gambling will result in towns turning into the hellish landscape depicted in Back to the Future II, or how legalizing gay marriage will inevitably lead to a world where homosexual incest, and sex with animals is the norm.

[–]beebopcola 1 point2 points ago

i'm not sure how i truly feel about your argument, but i spent about 5 minutes thinking about it. Really insightful, i haven't heard this point of view before.

[–]centerbleep 0 points1 point ago

ah, the totally-confuse-the-issue argument laced with exciting catchphrases from our daily tv program.

[–]LaxMike 4 points5 points ago

I don't know what you're talking about. I responded to a post that made the assumption that certain measures would inevitably lead to more drastic measures over time (i.e. The snowball effect), by comparing the issue to others we see in the news.

[–]FCS34 0 points1 point ago

Or sex with animals AND Norm. From cheers.

[–]Spiderveins 0 points1 point ago

How did it go? First they came for the communists...

[–]specialk16 2 points3 points ago

I'm not American but I absolutely love going up north (work, visiting family), especially NYC, and one day I'll be part of that great city.

You are not losing. At all.

[–]xblackdog 1 point2 points ago

We might be losing, but I would be willing to bet all the civil uprisings against dictatorships there is at least a indirect result of our actions in the middle east.

[–]bigskymind 0 points1 point ago

Except for the bit where the US has supported Middle East dictatorships when it suits them to do so.

[–]The_Cooler_King 2 points3 points ago

This is from my local paper. I had it up in my room till i moved out a couple years ago. I'm glad that people outside of Bergen County saw it.

[–]HetzerHetzesHetzly 2 points3 points ago

As a fellow Bergen County native, I wasn't all that surprised when I heard that the photo had earned national attention. It's damn striking.

[–]The_Cooler_King 0 points1 point ago

It really is. Really encapsulates the resilient feeling of Americans at the time.

[–]JaqHammerJesus 0 points1 point ago

And the sheer unpreparedness for the situation, standing there holding a fire extinguisher....

[–]capn774 0 points1 point ago

Bergen county represent!

[–]veni-veni-veni 3 points4 points ago

I lived around Columbia U during 9/11. I was compelled to take a look at the rubble shortly after they let non-rescue workers get close to Ground Zero. I still remember looking up at the wreckage of, I believe, bldg. 7. Just a sheet of metal and glass towering way above my head. It was literally bobbing in the gentle breeze. Haunting. To this day.

[–]JewCracker69 -3 points-2 points ago

Why, its not like 9/11 ACTUALLY happened.

[–]Daddelfar 100 points101 points ago

So how many sorts of cancer does this man have today

[–]gnarbucketz 100 points101 points ago

Not enough to deserve treatment :(

[–]rileyluck 25 points26 points ago

thank you for depressing me.

[–]Khiva 11 points12 points ago

I believe that, after the Daily Show made a big stink about it, everyone got treatment.

Shouldn't have had to get to that point, but at least the outcome was better than expected.

[–]springboks 4 points5 points ago

If you want depressing? A lot of the rubble from the WTC was shipped to India where there is cheap labor to sort through the trash.

Edit: added a question mark and here are sources:

Source 1

Source 2

Now someone please comment and tell me I'm full of shit!

[–]specialk16 8 points9 points ago

Source?

[–]rrrriley -2 points-1 points ago

Some of the World Trade Center metal was used on Curiosity, the Mars rover.

[–]rd79winters 2 points3 points ago

Also, the FDNY has sent small pieces of steel from the WTC to the other fire departments from all over the US and Canada who came to their aid on 9/11. Our department has used it as a part of our memorial to our fallen firefighters.

[–]axtolip 3 points4 points ago

[–]Big_one_bitey 11 points12 points ago

That first one from Afghanistan looks like a Renaissance portrait. Beautiful.

[–]BoonTobias 9 points10 points ago

That's because those people live in that time

[–]Ninja_Spike 6 points7 points ago

[–]haiduz 0 points1 point ago

The picture if the afghan holding two ice cream cones is just beginning to be turned into some sort of a "apologetic terrist" meme.

[–]ohgoddontdoit 1 point2 points ago

Man those Turkish bread rings look good. Also, lovely photographs.

[–]FCS34 0 points1 point ago

This guys good. Not Horst Faas good, but pretty damn good.

[–]CrabbyMcFartLice 13 points14 points ago

Steve McCurry went to ground zero and was shooting with a large format 4x5 camera. He considered doing it in black and white, but decided against it, saying it would be too dark, too grim. The even was tragic enough, black and white would make it even more morose. He chose colour because he wanted to focus on the police, fire, and other rescue workers there, wanted it to be about rebuilding, and humanity.

He was one of a few photographers who was given almost unlimited access to ground zero. His images, I think, really helped society to better understand the gravity of the attacks, and the humanity the police force and fire marshals exhibited. Now, ironically, in a post 9/11 society, there's no way anyone would have been given the access Steve McCurry was allowed.

[–]krymise 2 points3 points ago

Joel Meyerowitz got in there and documented Ground Zero using a fake worker's id.

[–]CrabbyMcFartLice 0 points1 point ago

That's right, I forgot about that! Joel Meyerowitz is such an awesome guy, he manages to come off as intense, candid, and warm at the same time.

And now I'm wondering if it was Meyerowitz or McCurry who shot large format and for the reasons I mentioned, I might have gotten my photographers confused. Either way, they're both great photographers with decades of experience, and are immensely and immediately likeable.

[–]krymise 0 points1 point ago

I have a very close friend who spent a few summers with Joel and was very good friends with him, this was after he mentioned to me previously that he was a model and friends with some 'no-name photographer' that had some cool interesting gear.

[–]endure_this[S] 0 points1 point ago

Pretty sure it was McCurry, or perhaps both. I base this on the exhibition I attended and the sharpness and clarity of the the huge photograph posted above. It wouldn't have been possible to get it that big without using a bigger format.

Also, the exhibition mentioned that McCurry usually traveled with the biggest format for this particular reason. It also taught him to make every photo count as the bigger film were a bit heavier and harder to travel with which resulted in that he couldn't bring as much film as he'd like.

[–]sparty_party 3 points4 points ago

You take a picture in color to capture the image, and black and white to capture the meaning.

Heard this somewhere...I think it's very true.

[–]Stumblin_McBumblin 0 points1 point ago

I don't even know if I agree with this quote you may or may not have heard, but I would replace "image" with "moment." IMO, it sounds better, and makes a little more sense.

[–]sparty_party 0 points1 point ago

Yes! That's the word I believe it originally had. I couldn't remember the more sensical word and put one that had generally the same idea. Thanks :)

[–]PSDOilPaintFilter 172 points173 points ago

[–]notarealsuperhero 27 points28 points ago

Well now, that's a cool filter.

[–]BoonTobias 6 points7 points ago

If you don't have photoshop but want to use cool filters, download picasa, but none of that instagram stuff

[–]haymakers9th 3 points4 points ago

or GIMP

[–]kelseyxiv 6 points7 points ago

What filter is this

[–]elizabethan 7 points8 points ago

The poster's name is "PSDOilPaintFilter" soooo....

[–]immatellyouwhat 7 points8 points ago

Gaussian Blur?

[–]Cryst 4 points5 points ago

Difference Clouds?

[–]immatellyouwhat 3 points4 points ago

Not sure how I feel about that.

Disclaimer: I'm a Cloud.

[–]javabrewer 3 points4 points ago

I imagine he convolved the image along its gradient lines.

[–]FluoCantus -3 points-2 points ago

Oh god, another one of these accounts? It doesn't even require any skill.

[–]from_gondolin 8 points9 points ago

New Yorker here. Just seeing pics of the aftermath stills makes me mad.

[–]DistractedByCookies 1 point2 points ago

Not a NYer, not even an American, and these still make my heart hurt. The falling people ones still make me cry.

I do realise it's different when it's your town, but just to say that others remember.

[–]bigtreeworld 40 points41 points ago

Damn, that's good. It looks like a disaster movie poster or something.

[–]endure_this[S] 11 points12 points ago

My throughs exactly. When I saw it on display in a exhibition in Copenhagen I couldn't believe that it was an actual photograph from the attacks.

[–]suo 1 point2 points ago

It reminds me of the Courier in Fallout: New Vegas exploring the Lonesome Road, detonating Nukes with his/her laser pistol.

[–]KittenBraden 4 points5 points ago

My thoughs exactly too, it looks surreal. Then you realise it's actually real and chills just go through your whole body. Stunningly beautiful photo.

[–]WeLoveKanjimari 40 points41 points ago

This will sound really stupid, but before this picture I guess I didnt grasp just how much debris there was. I never saw any photos of it and never put 2 and 2 together to realize that there'd be huge piles of the stuff.

Do not take this the wrong way, but...

It's...it's very pretty. There's something beautiful about it.

[–]onimus 6 points7 points ago

I feel pretty terrible, my first thought was that will make a perfect wall paper

[–]crj123082 4 points5 points ago

I've always believed there is beauty in sadness...when someone is truly sad, ego gives way to honesty. And love - because without it, I don't think sadness could exist.

[–]sgSaysR 3 points4 points ago

Nothing personal but I find nothing beautiful about a mountain of twisted death. But to each his own.

[–]CaptainEarlobe 26 points27 points ago

It's aesthetically beautiful, regardless of its meaning.

[–]beebopcola 4 points5 points ago

i think there is beauty in how powerful it is. it evokes thought and emotion, there's beauty in that. I don't think sgSaysR meant visually unappealing, but its likely he found it emotionally unappealing.

[–]damontoo 2 points3 points ago

I never saw any photos of it

How is this even possible?

[–]Sappharos 6 points7 points ago

I think he's referring to photos depicting the sheer volume of rubble. Yes I too haven't seen it before, but had imagined it to be something like this.

[–]PLACENTA_IS_YUMMY 0 points1 point ago

...A beautiful disaster, perhaps?

[–]sparty_party 1 point2 points ago

I came here to say this exact thing. I don't know why I subconsciously pictured them sifting through a foot or less of debris...this really made me realize how much they actualyl had to deal with and go through...

[–]Shorvok 1 point2 points ago

The stupendously hard thing to process is that most of the debris sunk down into the sub-layers beneath the building so there was some ~80ft of debris below the surface. The pictures are just showing the tip of a 100+ foot tall wall of twisted steel and bodies.

It really was a horrible event that I hope the world never sees the likes of again.

[–]CavJake 0 points1 point ago

I truly hope not too. And as a US soldier I signed up and I believe that my brothers and sisters and arms truly are fighting and dying half the world away from their families to stop it from ever happening again. Here or anywhere.

[–]millionsofmonkeys 0 points1 point ago

There was so much debris, they could not put out the fires in the pile for three months. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collapse_of_the_World_Trade_Center#Cleanup

[–]CasanovaWong 6 points7 points ago

Stunning photo of a 9/11 rescue worker who now probably has ten different types of cancer from breathing in some of the worst shit humanly possible. Everything about that is just awful.

[–]scott226 18 points19 points ago

I can't begin to even fathom, how anybody was pulled out alive from that wreckage.

I mean, where would you even begin to search? Damn onions.

[–]sgSaysR 13 points14 points ago

All of the survivors were inside some form of enclosed shaft. Elevator shaft (a couple firefighters) and a more firefighters and a couple civilians inside a stairwell. But that was very few.

[–]LaziestNoveltyAcct 5 points6 points ago

<10 if memory recalls correctly

[–]NoctGent 1 point2 points ago

from what I remember it was 3 survivors after the first 24 hours

[–]sgSaysR 1 point2 points ago

From what I remember it was more than 3 but less than 10. There was the elevator shaft a couple dove into from as the first tower collapsed and there was a stairwell some were coming down in and had reached 2nd or 3rd level as the second tower collapsed. If my memory is correct there was a civilian or two along with firefighters in the stairwell.

[–]dsclouse 5 points6 points ago

Me too, I had a close family friend sent there for 6 weeks to help with clean-up and recovery. He says the debris was so tightly packed and tangled, anyone who came out alive was beyond lucky.

[–]ichigo2862 7 points8 points ago

I remember watching a memorial on CNN a year after it happened. I was sitting alone in our living room, bawling my eyes out. Fuck those terrorist bastards.

[–]Valkner 1 point2 points ago

Only five were pulled from the debris within the first twenty four hours. No one else was recovered alive after that. The dogs searching became confused after locating so many dead bodies that rescue workers had to occasionally hide in the debris to be found. The dogs needed to find live people because that's what they were initially meant to do... recover the living. This is so hideous to me...

[–]scott226 0 points1 point ago

Damn... This is scary. People that were possibly alive were under tons of wrecked metal, perhaps in a crevice. Yelling, screaming, begging to get out. Only for help to never arrive in time.

Fuck...

[–]MongolianFoodHoarder 6 points7 points ago

I know what the photo is, but at first glance, I kept thinking that it was someone looking into the wreckage of a crashed starship.

[–]dayvieee 4 points5 points ago

To think that was 11 years ago... time sure has passed.

[–]PakPak96 4 points5 points ago

Simply amazing, the things that some humans will do for others. I love that part of humanity.

[–]JewelsMonkey 5 points6 points ago

My heart hurts so bad looking at this.

[–]badaboombip 4 points5 points ago

It makes me sad that guy is probably dead right now from lung cancer or something related.

[–]GitEmSteveDave 0 points1 point ago

Way to be optimistic.

[–]DeltaShield 5 points6 points ago

More of this r/pics .... More of this !

[–]Kubaker1 1 point2 points ago

It's funny, I'm old enough I remember this being on the news for weeks and the years after.

[–]SayVandalay 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I agree.

[–]mybossthinksimworkng 4 points5 points ago

Redditor for 24 days and gave full credit to original photographer. Nice work OP!

[–]gadorp 14 points15 points ago

Every time I head some truther talk about how it was all powder and rocks at ground zero (especially degenerates like Jesse Ventura)... this picture.

Fuck 9/11 "truthers".

[–]dsclouse 5 points6 points ago

While I dislike them as much as the next sane person, I do see how they can not trust the US government, it's just a shame they pour so much energy into something so incorrect and misguided. When there are plenty of legitimate things they could be decrying.

[–]Thrash3r 1 point2 points ago

Like the Apollo landings. Or Tupac's death.

[–]gingerjet -1 points0 points ago

I voted for Ventura for governor of MN - his fault is two things - he has no patience for the art of politics and he is always looking for a revenue stream. Pandering to truthers provided a revenue stream.

[–]HBHartman 2 points3 points ago

Are you sure that wasn't from when the Sector 7 plate fell?

[–]codylz28 0 points1 point ago

Damn them Shinra!!

[–]HBHartman 0 points1 point ago

It was Avalanche! I'm tired of you conspiracy theory nut cases. Why wouldn't you believe the news?

[–]ConstableLoadletter 2 points3 points ago

Not even in his top 1000 best photos. The guy's my frickin' hero.

[–]YuSoWong 2 points3 points ago

The sheer scale of all the debris and wrangled metal must have been so overwhelming.

[–]marcdaniel 2 points3 points ago

McCurry just flew into NY the day before this happened, he ran down there with his camera just after it occured. He almost got hte shit kicked out of him by support workers because he wouldnt leave. The shot was more important.

[–]RedditsKittyKat 1 point2 points ago

Dammit this filled me with so much emotion. :(

[–]WholeGrainCheerio 2 points3 points ago

Really powerful pic...

[–]MistrMink 1 point2 points ago

Burn, dodge, rule of threes.

But damn that's a nice shot.

[–]notjustanymike 0 points1 point ago

200 comments and only one rule of threes reference. It's a crime I tell you!

[–]yonkers22 2 points3 points ago

bin laden is dead. why are we still in 6 countries in the middle east killing thousands of civilians. oh right. because bush obama and romney are all on the tit of the military industrial complex.

[–]elitegamerbros 2 points3 points ago

Watch out for the molten metal bro!

EDIT: lol why the hate? you can't deny molten steel was witnessed weeks after 9/11 during the clean up; there were even thermal imaging showing the heat pockets days after 9/11. 7 people choose to deny facts :\

[–]GitEmSteveDave -4 points-3 points ago

Shut up you you so called "truther".

[–]JLW09 1 point2 points ago

That doesnt even look real and i cant really say why but its just so surreal that picture !

[–]Dan061 1 point2 points ago

Can I recommend also Todd Maisel from the Daily News.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eab9NnImIM http://nyppa.org/todd-911

[–]frennimgz 1 point2 points ago

This is such a powerful photo

[–]amiga500 1 point2 points ago

I forgot what the "pile" looked like.

[–]_Jairus -1 points0 points ago

Is this where he starts his ascent to the upper reaches of Midgar?

[–]inhalfthetime 1 point2 points ago

I met Steve McCurry several years ago. He's a really lovely, very humble man. I'm really glad he's done so well for himself.

[–]whinner 1 point2 points ago

Akira?

[–]pop_POP 0 points1 point ago

I've always made that connection too. It's like a panel right out of the manga. Epic.

[–]backlit_silhouette 0 points1 point ago

This is me.

[–]jcf005 0 points1 point ago

Fo real?

[–]backlit_silhouette 0 points1 point ago

Nah, check my username.

[–]el_swag -1 points0 points ago

Wait this isn't a Michael Bay movie poster?

I'll see myself out now.

[–]SayVandalay 0 points1 point ago

It makes me feel old seeing so many comments of "movie poster," "photoshopz into a michael omg bay poster," "omg you guys this looks like that thing out of that video game."

So many Redditors I've learned were probably too young to really remember this.

[–]maestoso 0 points1 point ago

Outstanding photo!

What an unusual similarity it shares with the new Halo 4 cover art.

[–]dasstrooper 0 points1 point ago

redditor for 24 days

[–]NotlimTheGreat 0 points1 point ago

I'm really curious as to the relevance of this?

[–]blueangel19 1 point2 points ago

I wonder what Shitty_watercolour's rendition would look like.

[–]JP121GW 0 points1 point ago

Wow.

[–]dangoodspeed 0 points1 point ago

I like how the dust makes the top part of the image appear ominously black & white.

[–]sri_lanka 0 points1 point ago

Hope the gentlemen is wearing a respirator.

[–]latinlovermike 0 points1 point ago

Haunting. Chilling. Sends shivers down my spine.

[–]Tertius96 -1 points0 points ago

i love this picture so much. That a man can walk into a scene like that unfazed, that is true beauty. This picture restores ALL of my faith in the human race

[–]PloxBeefBurrito 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of Crysis 2

[–]samuel33334 0 points1 point ago

now THAT looks like the cover of a comic book

[–]Thoughtful_Bulbasaur 0 points1 point ago

Given the depressing setting of the picture, your username is very apt.

[–]korosu9 0 points1 point ago

I spent 5 minutes staring at this picture and I am still stunned...wow

[–]PVP_in_your_pants 0 points1 point ago

That's Fallout 4.

[–]kshiz 0 points1 point ago

A girl a grew up with's father was part of USAR when 9/11 happened. He flew out to the East Coast for a couple weeks to help coordinate rescue efforts. When he came back, he brought back poster sized printouts of satellite imagery of the debris. He had thermal imagery, standard, and a couple others. I went over to their house one time and he showed me all these printouts and I talked with him for at least an hour about everything that was going on there, on what he was doing, and just overall the unthinkable scale of this whole travesty.

Just reminiscing on the whole thing really. He is the main reason why I still want to become a volunteer fireman at some point in my life.

[–]Hyperian 0 points1 point ago

i want to see the after photo where the rescue worker stands in line in the emergency room because government won't cover his illness due to him being a 9/11 rescue worker.

[–]larkthechris 0 points1 point ago

9/11? I'd give this picture at least a 10.

[–]buterbetterbater 0 points1 point ago

who probably now has cancer and no way to pay for it. good job america!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Kinda makes you think how we built a world so big that it's starting to turn against us.

[–]yropinionsx 0 points1 point ago

This thread brought back many emotions from that day. I was an EMT and volunteered that day in NYC. I went in from NJ and did 12 hours on 9/11, then another 20 the following day. I would have volunteered more time but by the third day it was becoming more a recovery operation and less rescue. Also, my skills set was basic EMT and they needed people with more training. It was a horrible time, but it was amazing to see perfect strangers helping each other in anyway possible during a traumatic event.

[–]DreaFea -1 points0 points ago

Does anyone on here really believe all that debris was caused by airplanes? Has anyone ever seen a building building being demolished? Its not right what so many people were put through that day and even worse so many others don't know what really happened. For those towers to collapse at almost freefall speed, it wasn't no airplanes I just don't understand why so many people don't see.

Even more sad than the picture and all the innocent people that lost their lives in this tragic disaster is knowing that all of this was pretty sure staged . It shocks me to know what human beings are willing to do ... humans from own ranks with little bit of help from brainwashed mercenarys

Brings a tear to my eye. I couldn't imagine being in that guy's shoes at that moment in time. No telling what his thought process was. His family, his future, the wrecking, the people underneath him. Wow.

As an amateur photographer... Being as good as McCurry is one of my many goals I'm not sure I'm able to accomplish...

Isn't it crazy, that they found a hijacker's passport in this mess, but couldn't find the flight recorders?

[–]Atumus 0 points1 point ago

Ahuh. People still butt hurt about this.

[–]buttrdnoodlz -2 points-1 points ago

In my opinion this is not a stunning photo, its a sad photo.

[–]orientalnegro 8 points9 points ago

Why does sad and stunning have to be mutually exclusive traits? A good photo surely stands up on its own merit even without any context no?

[–]buttrdnoodlz 0 points1 point ago

Its not a stunning photo, its a sad reminder of how cruel this world can be, and how our over-bloated military, the best of the best many times over financially couldn't protect our airspace from four commercial airliners. Its sad to know that more than 50% of our tax money goes to our military budget and on 9/11 they were no more useful than an open padlock on a chain link fence with a hole in it.

To me there is nothing good about a photo of a building I used to walk through daily that was reduced to rubble.

That's what I see when I look at that photo and it doesn't stun me at all, it brings back very deep sad memories.

Sorry for the late reply, I just got Reddit Enhancement Suite and realised I had messages.

I understand where you coming from but the photo serves as the medium for whatever it is trying to convey which includes aesthetics, composition and any other artistic interpretation as well as of course the story and facts behind it which in this case so happens to be the 9/11 attacks. To me (as a Brit), the photo serves as an indelible record of the tragedy that will serve as a powerful reminder for generations to come and I don't see how that be a bad thing even if it may carry extra emotional impact for you and others who lost close ones or were involved in some way. I'm basically saying that the means of delivery, that is photography, is largely independent of the events it captures, it is the purest observer. If I was to extend your logic of ''this photo documents a terrible event and has negative connotations, therefore it is a bad photo'' then would all similar photos throughout history serve no good? The key difference between our perspectives it seems is that you think that the means of delivery and content are one and the same. I'm not debating the government's inefficacy which I see as a whole different topic.

Hope that helped explain how I saw the photo.

I understand. Pictures hit people in different ways. It's just something I dont like to remember. I still get sketchy when I see low flying planes over downtown NYC.

Beautifully depressing.

[–]DogIam -1 points0 points ago

You can see a head in the middle left side, to the right of the pole. ... fuck.

[–]GitEmSteveDave 2 points3 points ago

[–]evanman69 1 point2 points ago

[–]Noxdus 0 points1 point ago

Almost looks like the "real world" in The Matrix.

[–]BobbyDigital_ncsu -2 points-1 points ago

Or it's a poster from a Michael Bay movie, without the text.

[–]jayarrsteiner -1 points0 points ago

someone PLEASE make this into a "movie poster"

[–]S73rM4n 2 points3 points ago

Pretty sure that would be the definition of "bad taste"

[–]kingabdullah -2 points-1 points ago

I wonder if we'll ever find out whether the Bush Administration and Saudi Intelligence were behind the planning of the attacks or just permitted them to happen. There's no chance we would ever have gone to war with Iraq without the state of panic generated by 9/11. Neoconservatives have proven themselves to be some of the most treasonous and disgusting individuals with events like Iran Contra and the overthrowing of countless legitimate governments in the 3rd world. The murder of a couple thousand Americans wouldn't bother people like Dick Cheney and Paul Wolfowitz .

[–]Brocutio -4 points-3 points ago

Who the fuck down votes this?
