Edison looks like he is peering over Sagan's shoulder. I wonder what he's trying to steal.

[–]jabedude 12 points13 points ago

Some Bravery probably!

[–]heidavey 30 points31 points ago

Galileo, Marie Curie, Oppenheimer, Newton, Louis Pasteur, Hawking, Einstein, Sagan, Edison, Aristotele, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Dawkins, Darwin.

[–]dangerzonepatrol101 7 points8 points ago

missed Pasteur and Aristotle

[–]AdHom 0 points1 point ago

I missed those two as well, though I'm pretty sure I've never seen a picture of Pasteur before.

[–]dangerzonepatrol101 0 points1 point ago

I thought he was Dimitri Mendelelev

[–]intoto 5 points6 points ago

IMO Mendeleev (chemistry) should have been on the list, and ditto for Richard Feynman (quantum electrodynamics), Niels Bohr (quantum mechanics), Michael Faraday (electricity and magnetism), Nikolai Tesla (AC electricity, radio, electromagnetism), and Edwin Hubble (astronomy, size and age of the universe, galaxies, red shift, expansion of space). I'd nix Tyson, Dawkins, Oppenheimer, Sagan, Edison and Hawking. I'm not sure about Aristotle ... I'd prefer Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen). And I'd probably pick Kepler over Galileo. It would also be interesting to work John Bardeen and Max Born into the mix.

[–]somthingwicked 4 points5 points ago

I'd much rather see Tesla than that swine Edison.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Thank you!

[–]AdHom 1 point2 points ago

I thought it kind of looked like Freud but I was confused as to why he would be on the list

[–]herro_prease 0 points1 point ago

You probably saw it in middle school bio book, but there's no real art of him or any famous pictures to remember him by that I can think of.

[–]Erdumas 0 points1 point ago

I thought Pasteur might have been Lord Kelvin. And I changed my mind on Aristotle and thought maybe Euclid.

[–]AdHom 0 points1 point ago

I think Kelvin's beard is usually portrayed as being longer, but I could see it. In context of being on a list of great scientists, Kelvin certainly makes more sense than Freud, which is who I thought it was.

[–]CptExplodeyPants 0 points1 point ago

I could only get the obvious ones... i missed Galileo, Oppenheimer, Pasteur, Edison and aristotle

[–]njwatson32 0 points1 point ago

I missed Oppenheimer, Edison, and Aristotle.

Proud to say I got Pasteur (though I was kind of guessing).

[–]twig123 48 points49 points ago

Where the hell is Tesla?!

[–]Kurayamino 15 points16 points ago

Back when this was first made, there was a version with Tesla instead of Edison.

Edit: Here's one Tesla version. And Here's the earliest post I could find. It has a couple of Tesla versions in the comments.

Edit: Also The original, there the artist laments his folly of not including Tesla in the comments.

[–]andthisone 33 points34 points ago

Fuck Thomas Edison.

[–]corwin1681 3 points4 points ago

Tesla was awesome, too bad he doesn't get enough credit... I wish I could give you more then one upvote :(

[–]zeroone 5 points6 points ago

Forgotten.

[–]twig123 9 points10 points ago

Edison may be taught in favor of Tesla in schools...
But that is something we are striving to change.

[–]keepthepace 4 points5 points ago

He was buzzy inventing a deathray. He has no time for fancy parties!

[–]40_ton_cap 2 points3 points ago

That was my first thought as well. Eddison is in there, that stealing money grubbing ass.

[–]apocryphite 20 points21 points ago

I would consider Sagan, deGrasse Tyson and Dawkins to be "famous scientist" rather than "great scientists". I love them all, but I wouldn't put them so high on the Science Hall of Fame. I would like to see Nicola Tesla, Richard Feynman, Maxwell, Schrödinger, Bohr or such instead. Dirac. Fermi.

Oh well, I guess the idea is to make an iconic picture.

[–]brightman95 7 points8 points ago

I would have to disagree with you on Sagan though. He was really the one who first tried to make science accessible to the masses.

[–]BantamBasher135 3 points4 points ago

Came for Feynman, was not disapoint.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I agree, while they are definitely some of my favorite scientists, they haven't really discovered anything that's shaken the foundation of science and given us a new theory and way to look at the universe, although you could argue that they try to get people to look at the universe from a scientific perspective in general.

[–]chaoslord 2 points3 points ago

Yeah plus Sagan was key in a lot of NASA work - astronomy is still science, right? NDT is filling in Sagan's shoes for getting people to know science, and Dawkins has written a ton of really good books on the subjects of science.

[–]AaronHolland44 0 points1 point ago

Thomas Young- This guy.

[–]thekikuchiyo 1 point2 points ago

I thought it was more of people whose work had chipped away at the religious claim to absolute knowledge, which Sagan, Tyson, and Dawkins would belong to. I agree though their professional work (what I know of it) wasn't nearly as groundbreaking as their company in the pic.

[–]molandsprings 2 points3 points ago

I was thinking the same thing. 100 years from now people will know who Einstein and Curie are, but unless something amazing happens, NDT won't even be a footnote. I know he is a favorite here, but let's be consistent.

[–]Trioate 5 points6 points ago

Neil deGrasse Tyson, first human ambassador of Earth to intelligent extraterrestrial life.

[–]hskiel4_12 6 points7 points ago

Aaaaaand stolen. Thank you very much

[–]MasterNyx 6 points7 points ago

If Edison isn't Judas he should be.

[–]LS_DJ 2 points3 points ago

If Edison was Judas, then Tesla should be Jebus

[–]Gmtom 5 points6 points ago

Good, but should replace Edison with Tesla and have Newton in the middle instead of Einstein

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I think it kind of makes sense with Einstein in the middle, as he had the general theory of relativity that tied together lots of different things, brought many different aspects of science together, ya know?

[–]AlsionGrace 2 points3 points ago

Edison should be in the judas position since he is a traitorous fuck, and why no Bill Nye or Tesla?

[–]pasternaster 4 points5 points ago

Exactly, Tesla as Jesus and Edison as Judas.

[–]chaoslord 1 point2 points ago

Bill Nye falls into the category of science educator, and while he's great at that, I'm not aware of any major scientific discoveries. That being said, science education is still incredibly important.

[–]MoeNuckah 3 points4 points ago

Need to swap Edison for Tesla

[–]SbGeology 4 points5 points ago

At first, I thought Oppenheimer was Anthony Wiener... wtf

[–]monkeyboy7893 2 points3 points ago

I was thinking "this is the same cover photo as my roommate's." Then I realized that the OP IS my roommate.

[–]shmishmortion 4 points5 points ago

WHERE THE FUCK IS FEYNMAN

[–]Notblackandwhite 1 point2 points ago

While I agree with many of these choices, should Tyson and Sagan be included? You already have Aristotle, why not add some other of the great Greeks? Hippocrates, Archimedes, Pythagoras, etc. Or Ptolemy, Copernicus, Mendel. These guys redefined progress

[–]ArletApple 1 point2 points ago

Gregor Mendel, a man worthy of respect for his devotion to the scientific rigor and process. not lightly called the father of modern genetics. all this despite being a friar to the church.

[–]bluepwrranger 1 point2 points ago

Why's Aristotle included?

[–]hskiel4_12 5 points6 points ago

To quote the painter:

"HE INVENTED LOGIC FOR GOD'S SAKE"

[–]robbity 1 point2 points ago

Aristotle's classification of life wasn't that far behind Darwin; he saw nature as force that defines animals, similar to natural selection. Not bad for someone who lived 350 years before the modern era. Also there's the whole thing about being the father of philosophy, metaphysics and psychology.

[–]bluepwrranger 2 points3 points ago

Of course. But in his study of the meaning of being, he introduces the concept of an "unmoved mover" which is... a deity (a First Cause or Prime Mover). He also has a distinct view of a god, which is shared by many deists including Anthony Flew (an analytic philosopher who identified the No True Scotsman Fallacy). So yeah, he's not really included there, I'd replace him with Epicurus. But if this wallpaper is supposed to be filled with people whose contributions to science and other fields was immense, then he's most welcome.

[–]robbity 1 point2 points ago

They were/are inspirational people, but of their times.

Darwin may or may not have believed in God, but he certainly wasn't a fan of creationism.

[–]katrionatronica 1 point2 points ago

Aristotle did believe that faith should be challenged and tested, not assumed. He came up with a series of arguments 'proving' the existence of god because he challenged his own faith and was seeking to strengthen it with logic and proof.

Admittedly, he reached the wrong conclusion and flaws can be found in all the arguments. But he was a level better than pure dogmatism. If more people followed his lead today, with all the wealth of scientific and sociological evidence at our hands, we could throw a lot of dogma out the window.

[–]abyssion8 2 points3 points ago

I'm sad that Richard Feynman isn't included.

[–]littlespanishflea 1 point2 points ago

Einstein wasn't an atheist neither was Thomas Edison

[–]plainOldFool 0 points1 point ago

Neither was Sagan or NTD.

[–]kenlane -1 points0 points ago

Furthermore Edison was really more a businessman, they should include tesla

[–]madmaxx0064 1 point2 points ago

it shall be my next banner.

[–]TimestopBestPower 0 points1 point ago

You should have added nietzsche

[–]ChocolateHead 2 points3 points ago

Nietzsche should actually be an enemy to atheists, because atheists want to believe in science, and Nietzsche thought that even science was stupid.

[–]TimestopBestPower 0 points1 point ago

Not in all cases, some of his work is ambiguous like that. He's obviously an ally to atheists, have you ever read 'The Anti-Christ'? Very powerful stuff, I highly recommend it.

[–]Benny_the_Jew 0 points1 point ago

What did Nietzsche not consider stupid? Just mankind? I read that he felt the superior race was the Jew at one point.

[–]Trioate -2 points-1 points ago

Not a scientist.

[–]xsirus 0 points1 point ago

That would not be the seating arrangement...

[–]CptExplodeyPants 0 points1 point ago

Newton looks really annoyed with Einstein.

[–]Mrbrute 0 points1 point ago

Seriously you need Niels Bohr and Nikola Tesla they are extremely important contributors to science at par with Einstein. And if you feel like it H. C. Ørsted discovered electromagnetism.

[–]AtworkReddit00124 -1 points0 points ago

Timeline stolen, have an upvote

[–]KikiCVIII 0 points1 point ago

You got a few religious folks in that picture you know.

[–]ChocolateHead 1 point2 points ago

What's funny is that most of the major scientists in history actually DID believe in God. Most of the people that who say science and religion are incompatible are authors that are commenting on science, not actual scientists. Real scientists are a lot more humble than to think they've figured out all the mysteries of the universe.

[–]TXrichard 0 points1 point ago

This is neat.

[–]Kman1121 0 points1 point ago

Is this even sacrilegious? Why would they get angry?

[–]ChocolateHead 0 points1 point ago

They didn't get angry, OP is lying. Atheists on r/atheism make up stories about religious people doing stupid, irrational shit all the time.

[–]bkwrmi 1 point2 points ago

I kind of want to steal this, or at least make my own version of it.

[–]NoReligionPlz -1 points0 points ago

And instead of being called The Last Supper, this should be called Cool People Just Hanging Out...What names would you give this masterpiece?

[–]wiggersoe 0 points1 point ago

Newton should be in the center

[–]GaianAvatar 0 points1 point ago

Oh, Albert. You so swag...

[–]chaingunXD 0 points1 point ago

I did the same thing months ago. Pissed off one of my fundie friends soooooo bad.

[–]yourfrigginguide -1 points0 points ago

y u no put bill gates?

[–]tipicaldik 1 point2 points ago

Just think how pissy they'da got if you had Darwin in place of Jesus...

[–]curamakh 0 points1 point ago

Needs Max planck!

[–]GodofEpicness 0 points1 point ago

Just out of curiousity, who betrays Einstien?

[–]cruzer86 0 points1 point ago

Most of those people are agnostic.

[–]Hoshizoraa 1 point2 points ago

I demand Christopher Hitchens be shopped into here!

[–]johnnybravo1014 0 points1 point ago

They're there because they're scientists not because they're atheists.

[–]mark4669 1 point2 points ago

The guy on the right sure looks like Dan Dennett.

[–]Nechaev -1 points0 points ago

If you really want to aggravate your religious friends you should have included Marx. Actually, you should included him anyhow.

Cool pic though!

don't like Marx? Get fucked then!

[–]Thalmazor 0 points1 point ago

...George Carlin?

[–]kev92715 -1 points0 points ago

Hate to burst your bubble, but if that is indeed Newton, that is portraying him very inaccurately. Newton was very religious. He probaly spend more time on religion than on math or science.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Very true, if I remember correctly, I read that the man spent more time writing about religious matters than scientific ones. Still, he was one of the most influential scientific figures that have ever lived, opening the door and paving way to the scientific understanding that we have now.

[–]fnordit 1 point2 points ago

Where the hell is Turing?

[–]flowersnstuff 0 points1 point ago

I wish I had a facebook with the cover photo thing so I could upload this.

[–]HeloisePommefume 0 points1 point ago

Um...Where is Francis Bacon? The one who developed the Scientific Method?

[–]biscuitpuppy 0 points1 point ago

where is Norman Borlaug?!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Definitely just made this my facebook cover as well, this is great. Here's my best attempt: Galileo, Curie(?), don't know, Newton, Freud(?), Hawking, Einstein, Sagan, Hubble(?), Aristotle or Plato or Hippocrates or Aristarchus, Tyson, Dawkins, and Darwin. How'd I do?

[–]pebohead 1 point2 points ago

If only Newton was in Einstein's place. That man basically invented all of science.

[–]skullOFaPLESIOSAURUS 0 points1 point ago

Stephen Hawking doesn't look impressed...........OH.......Wait............he never looks impressed. nvrmnd.

[–]Tastes_Of_Burning 0 points1 point ago

I'll be stealing this, thank you very much...

[–]JabbaWockyy -1 points0 points ago

Not sure but I'll give it a try. God, God, God, God, God, God, God, God, God, God, God, God, God

[–]404-shame-not-found 0 points1 point ago

I want that as a 2 foot high painting on my wall.

[–]Drpackman5000 0 points1 point ago

i want a 2m high painting on my wall :D

[–]404-shame-not-found 0 points1 point ago

ok, I see how it is. I want that picture as wallpaper. So it covers ALL THE WALLS. :D

[–]Drpackman5000 0 points1 point ago

i want it to cover the hole neighborhood.

[–]404-shame-not-found 0 points1 point ago

You know what. The entire planet. Yeah, that'll do it. 50ft high statues of each of those guys in every city too.

[–]Drpackman5000 0 points1 point ago

well i would have it cover the hole earth and the moon and have and statues of each of those guys not once but twice and this time they are not 50 feet tall but 50 meters tall and to get a idea of how long a meter is 50 feet is about 15 meters so that's pretty big.

[–]conversionbot 0 points1 point ago

50 feet = 15.24 meters

[–]Drpackman5000 0 points1 point ago

close enough

[–]404-shame-not-found 0 points1 point ago

Why don't we just take the moon and carve Carl Sagan's head into it? I don't mean just on the surface like Mt. Rushmore. The entire rock becomes a 3D head. front back, everything. Totally worth the money.

[–]Drpackman5000 0 points1 point ago

yeah fuck Mt Rushmore how about they carve the head of Neil deGrasse tyson, carl sagen, steepen hawking, Richard Dawkings , Charles Darwin, and sir Isaac Newton. any more you could think of?

[–]404-shame-not-found 0 points1 point ago

Albert Einstein, Nikola Tesla, Me.

I think we should hold a contest with the religious folk. They can pray for their God to put an image of Jesus on there or something, while we'll go there and carve it ourselves. Let's see which one gets done first. :)

[–]Drpackman5000 0 points1 point ago

now that would be lolocaust worth watching.

[–]CajunPenguin -1 points0 points ago

Come on r/atheism Einstein was Jewish stop putting him in here

[–]johnnybravo1014 0 points1 point ago

Einstein was Jewish ethnically, not religiously. Newton was a nutjob Christian though, doesn't mean I have any problem with him on there.

[–]InlineReaper 1 point2 points ago

Needs TESLA!

[–]Feldew 0 points1 point ago

Well obviously there's something wrong here. Darwin is the clear choice for the table's center.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

No Tesla?

[–]masterofthecontinuum 0 points1 point ago

why is edison on there, but Tessla isn't?

[–]ChocolateHead -2 points-1 points ago

Were your religious friends actually aggravated my this photo? I highly, highly doubt that. If you can't produce some evidence that they were bothered this photo, I'm just gonna assume this is another horror story invented by atheists to make religious people look stupid and crazy.

Also, some of these dudes believed in God, or at least in some idea of a God, if not the Christian God. For example, Aristotle believed in an "unmoved mover" that created the universe.

Isaac Newton definitely believed in God. In fact, he spent large portions of his life commenting on the Bible and trying to find prophecies in it and stuff.

Despite his fight with the Catholic church Galileo believed in God and said that the Bible cannot err.

Etc...

This strict division that you atheists want to make between science and religion is retarded. In fact, Einstein once said "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind."

And yes, he's in the center of your picture, and he DID believe in God.

[–]Benny_the_Jew -1 points0 points ago

Why isn't Lincoln in the middle? He was always my favorite president.

[–]enjoyyourclams -2 points-1 points ago

no sam harris?

[–]Serule -1 points0 points ago

most of my family is religious, goes to church every sunday -- and i put up the video game version of the last supper and not a single word spoken against it :(
