:( that's the first thought I had about my cat when we put her to sleep a couple years ago - how weird it was that her tongue just hung out like that. It was so unnatural and odd to see.

Just inserting a finger in their mouth is enough to make them weird out, this also works with cats and horses.
Don't do it with rabbits though, they just sheer through your entire finger like it's butter..

Not sure about smiling, but there was a study done on the "guilty look" animal owners think their pets do. It found that the owners couldn't distinguish when the animal had done something bad from when it hadn't. They were just projecting based on them believing the pet was guilty.

It could be that the pet looked guilty because the owner assumed guilt. The dogs would be reading the anger from their owners and acting submissive and sorry whether or not they actually did anything.

I don't think its out of the question for two mammals to show similar reactions to amusement. Really, a smile is just facial muscles contracting. Wolves are particularly interesting because their body language and facial expression was studied to an extent and show that there are facial and posture differences depending on what the animal is trying to express. You can take a look at the body language here. I'm unable to find the article where there was a break down of facial expressions depending on the interaction with the dominant male. There is a huge amount of social communication using the ears, eyes, mouth, and head position. This is why I think its possible for a dog who lives with humans and who descended from wolves to pick up human facial expressions out of necessity for communication.

If anybody knows the facial expressions article I'm talking about, please let me know. I just searched for it for half an hour and gave up.

You're doing it wrong. Stick it in their mouth sideways so that when they try to close their mouth it come down on your finger. They try so hard to get your finger out of their mouth, it's hilarious.
