Do dogs actually live and raise their young in such a 'family' environment? I ask this because I've never heard of it happening, and this photo hints at it...

I always thought that the male doesn't take part in raising ...

[–]denedeh 5 points6 points ago

i dont know much about dogs but as i understand it wolf packs are based around an adult mating couple. essentially just the parents and their kids

[–]Helarhervir 1 point2 points ago

Male dogs don't take part in raising young usually, no. I'm pretty sure I read from The Emperor's Embrace that when wolves became domesticated they lost the ability/instinct/skills/will necessary to father, but it's been a while since I've read it.

This is a great question. I know that in many cases the breeding pair isn't even kept together, often the male is owned by someone else.

The male will actually often become violent towards the puppies. Sometimes the mother will become violent towards any dog or unknown human that comes near. This 'family' scenario is not something any dog breeder I know would allow to happen.

This is my experience: We have had a litter with our male dog and our female, and the male dog is just a gentle boy and he was cautious and really sweet to the babies. The mom was a little stern with him to not go near them at first but she relaxed and they raised the pups fairly well without our help.

Dagos- What kind of dogs did you have?

[–]Dagos 0 points1 point ago

I have a golden retriever, Kai, and a Golden Doodle (colored him myself, yes that's food dye. )

Here is a baby, snoring!

This may have to be the single most cutest thing ever.

[–]TheMooner 5 points6 points ago

8 little munchkins!

[–]NostalgicMuscovy 3 points4 points ago

Looked like a spider in the thumbnail. Pleasantly relieved.

Awwwwwww, that is sooo adorable.

[–]JTMTL 5 points6 points ago

She picked a good Father.

[–]leftylossies 9 points10 points ago

I don't think dogs do that, I'm no dog expert but I'm pretty sure whoever took this pic positioned the dogs like that

[–]SUMPDIDDLYUMP 5 points6 points ago

I was wondering the same thing. It's a cute picture, but dogs don't do this. Could a dog expert weigh in?

[–]Cool_sandwich 1 point2 points ago

Schh schh just...let it be.

[–]SLE3PY 1 point2 points ago

[–]paronsaft 1 point2 points ago

One of those pictures - regardless of how many times it has been posted before - always makes me go awwww.

So sweet!!

[–]dubbstepit 1 point2 points ago

My eyes have never beheld such a glorious and adorable sight.

[–]SeparateCzechs 1 point2 points ago

I've never seen any footage of a golden retrievers litter being less than 8 pups. I'm sure they have them, but am I imagining that goldens have huge litters? My two came from a litter of 9.

[–]1Ender 3 points4 points ago

Better than (i think its) the tasmanian devil who has something like 20 pups but only 3 milk nipples so they all have to fight to see who can last latched on the longest until only 3 survive. Hyper Darwinism in action.

[–]SeparateCzechs 1 point2 points ago

That's horrifying. I never knew that. At least dogs have 8 nipples.

[–]DD_PleasureDD_Fun 1 point2 points ago

D'aaw! This is an adorable family photo. :)

[–]PuffBear 0 points1 point ago

[–]boomboxdino 1 point2 points ago

That's one of the best AWWs I've had all year.

[–]KningKonor 0 points1 point ago

At first I thought that was a picture of a spider from the preview picture.

[–]Rabbit-master 1 point2 points ago

This is seriously fucking beatiful!

[–]josawalk 0 points1 point ago

why does dad have a pink collar?

[–]RoMastaFlash 1 point2 points ago

Two moms? :)

[–]josawalk 0 points1 point ago

I'm all for that, but it's not like golden retrievers are visiting adoption clinics these days...

[–]doc58 -1 points0 points ago

Luv it! You don't see many two parent families anymore. Thanks for posting. I love how dad has his paw around mom.

[–]beatlelover13 0 points1 point ago

[–]tryingscience 0 points1 point ago

[–]Wahsteve 0 points1 point ago

[–]TheBunnyTheBear -1 points0 points ago

The dad is hugging the mom! That's my favorite part of this picture.

[–]Makelovenotrobots 1 point2 points ago

That is a great pic, make sure they all go to a loving family.
