People generally feel the need to be part of a circlejerk. Some do it through church, some do it through things like /r/atheism, and some do it in other ways. I don't visit /r/atheism very often, so I don't really care about people ridiculing it. I ridicule unproductive circlejerks no matter what, but not everything that comes from these places (churches, /r/atheism, etc.) are unproductive. Some things are productive. Sometimes it is necessary to look past the unproductive shit of places like this and find the things that are worth your time to learn about. Also, the bigger a community gets, the shittier it gets. A perfect example of this is a simple comparison of /r/atheism and /r/trueatheism. If you expect any different, you're obviously going to be disappointed. My advice is to simply understand these things and let the idiots enjoy everybody tell them how great and enlightened they are while looking past these idiots to the people who really are enlightened or are looking to be enlightened. That's just my take on the whole thing.
