Last year this happened to one of my hens. She lost most of her feathers (probably from panicking, chickens can do that) along with an eye. Her neck was also pretty torn up and looked very similar to this particular bird, all could do was clean it as best I could and put some blue coat on it. Most vets won't cover chickens and those that do are too expensive or far away.

I thought she'd bounced back for the first week after that, she seemed fine and I thought she'd recover, but she died before the end of the second week surprisingly suddenly. I've lost two other chickens to the hawks as well, but it's illegal to shoot them here as far as I know. Fortunately, one of my roosters has become some sort of badass drill sergeant since then and herds all the hens into the coop and stands in the doorway whenever he hears or sees that fucking hawk.

Damn do I hate hawks, they are such nasty bastards. Whenever you see a bird that has survived a hawk attack it is always terribly gory.

Something about the way wild animals can't have hope, a biological system designed purely to survive without the concept of getting help. Just to have your survival urges denied over a long length of time, probably the worst thing any living thing can endure.

I volunteer at a wildlife rehabilitation center. Hawks don't use their beaks as their weapon but rather their talons. This seagull most likely has other injuries that we can't see from this picture. Although it can stand after the assault, without treatment, this seagull will probably die. It's neck is now exposed to a lot of diseases/infection and I'll bet there are talon injuries as well. Sorry for being the messenger for bad news, but perhaps this poor bird is better off dead :(

I saw one on a golf course eating a jackrabbit and got close enough to snap a pic, but my buddies were telling me I was an idiot. I figured a 7-iron would be good enough. The bird never attacked though.
