This is news to me. Was this before or after the movie? I've read that the show was meant to end with the movie but the networks and studios wanted to keep it on.

It was after the movie. The original staff worked on that in 2004.

The strike took its effect on Spongebob when it started in November 2007, but only started to affect the TV show airings in 2008 onwards.

People get unduly pissed off about having to see the same submission twice.

For some reason, if there is a repost, it's assumed that the reposter knew that it was posted on reddit before and is "stealing karma". Instead of reddit being, I dunno, a link aggregator, and many of these images are perhaps viral and that's why they've been submitted so much.
