Exactly. Seeing things like this make me more humble, cautious, and aware that life is not something to be wasted. You never wake up thinking that you're going to die that day. It can happen at any moment, and most likely when you least expect it. It makes me more willing to try new things and appreciate what I have.

[–]Pack_of_derms 56 points57 points ago

I don't think the 18-wheeler caused that.

[–]indyK1ng 26 points27 points ago

No, but the 18 wheeler certainly blew through that SUV like it was made of cardboard. Hence why OP is always afraid of 18 wheelers. And me.

[–]ahubbs 23 points24 points ago

You really think the OP is afraid of you?

[–]Nowin 0 points1 point ago

I'd be more afraid of stupid drivers and poorly-made SUVs.

[–]indyK1ng 1 point2 points ago

A poorly made SUV will fall apart easier than an 18 wheeler and is less likely to disintegrate your car.

[–]ThatFuh_Qr 3 points4 points ago

there was nothing he could have done.

[–]snowy247 2 points3 points ago

It was clearly the fault of the SUV, However, also the fault of those who made it. Even with the strict European safety regulations we have over here, SUV's and pick ups are about the most unsafe thing you can drive. When studying vehicle safety, we were shown the crash test from a 'Nissan Navara' Pick-up and then the video from a Toyota IQ. The Nissan got half a star and the IQ got a 5/5 rating. I know which I'd rather have been in!

Here's 2 upvotes for your observation! Thanks for adding to the discussion. Have a great night!

[–]Bearmaster9013 8 points9 points ago

The suv just disintegrated. I dont want to think bout the guy/girl inside...

[–]Meat_Confetti 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, that SUV might as well have been a paper bag for all the good it did the driver.

[–]_oogle 13 points14 points ago

Video

Happened in Russia, driver of the SUV was alone and died instantly.

[–]NiteShadeX2 7 points8 points ago

Wonder what happened. It looks like he just hit a rough patch of ice and overcorrected. I've seen a few collisions that occurred in a similar fashion, but its usually driver nodding off or being intox.

[–]buttsexjones 4 points5 points ago

yeah so, how do we safely maneuver out of that kind of situation... winter weather driving... augh

[–]falling2fast 4 points5 points ago

Depending on the direction that you are spinning/turning you would either turn your wheel right (if your butt end was going right) or left (if your butt end was going left). This will prevent you from spinning out and allow you to slide a little till you get more traction. If possible I would also slow down, so that you would minimize the distance you travel while sliding (though sometimes you can't help it). It really comes down to remaining as calm as possible and not jerking the wheel suddenly. Just my 2 cents.

In the gif however the driver would have been fine if the larger vehicle to the right had not been there. the SUV would have survived however if they had remained calm and not overcompensated. Really it all comes down to you being careful and calm.

[–]LevelSteam 2 points3 points ago

It's one thing to calmly analyze the situation while you're sitting on the pc, and another when it's actually happening.

I've driven a Cavalier for four years now, and have put it in the ditch the last two winters where I live. The first time was on a back road the day after Christmas; the whole road was an ice sheet and I was doing between 15-20mph. Suddenly the wind picks up real bad and I start to fish-tail a bit, next thing I know I do a 180 and parallel park my car into the ditch. No damage or injuries, but scared the hell out of me.

Last winter I'm on the highway during a severe snow storm, and what isn't ice was slush. I was doing about 45-50mph, which looking back was extremely stupid, but I justified it by saying I was in a hurry to get to work. Anyway there are three cars behind me, following close. I hit a patch of slush about 100 yards from an overpass, and my ass starts to slide right. Despite the icy feeling in my gut, I follow the same advice and try to turn the wheel a little to the right to keep from spinning.

Nope.

A complete three-sixty follows.

As I the car starts to spin I see the concrete support wall of the overpass coming at me, and all I can think about is the sound of grinding metal. I pretty much think "this is it". Then I keep spinning and see the headlights behind me. They must have had enough time to react because they haven't hit me yet, but the spin continues and that wall is getting close. Now I'm parallel with it again, and figure I'll just side-swipe it and ruin my passenger side, but then luck places me firmly in the ditch and the cattails not twenty feet past it.

Again, no injuries or damage to my car.

Probably two of the scariest experiences I've ever had while driving, if only because of the lack of feeling in control. So if anything I'd say it comes down more on being careful before you put yourself in that situation, because no matter how calm you are the majority of the time, what you do in that situation is -in my opinion- more of a gut-reaction or reflex than a calculated correction to regain control.

Edit: You're advice is correct though, turning the wheel in the direction you're sliding to regain control is exactly what you're supposed to do, it just didn't work out for me.

[–]wrightaboutit 1 point2 points ago

Don't go too fast. It's the easiest fucking answer in the world and yet entitled yuppies think they can go as fast as they want because the SUV has four wheel drive. Many of these people get in over their heads because they don't have long experience with winter driving. A few winters of growing up in the Rockies with experience in doing donuts and drifting in a parking lot will get you a better sense of what you can and can't do. The fast moving rentals are the most dangerous--coming down a canyon from a ski resort once, a yuppie in an SUV cut me off one time to make a fast pass around a car in the left lane, only to hit slush like this guy did and sail off the road. Seriously, just go as fast as you feel like you have control. It's pretty simple.

[–]neon_moon 1 point2 points ago

Exactly this. 4 wheel drive will not help you stop in snow/ice. I see it all the time up here (New England), trucks and SUV's in ditches because people don't understand that regardless if your truck can do 60 on the snow, you shouldn't.

[–]wrightaboutit 0 points1 point ago

The real problem shown here is that the driver did not hold his/her line in the clean pavement tracked by cars in front. Like in skiing, you have to pick a line and let your edge keep you there. When you don't hold a line is when the skis wobble under you and you lose control. My guess is this started either by getting distracted and drifting out of the rut, followed by trying to get back in and overshooting, or from a lane change being made at speeds that are way too fast.

Falling2fast is right that you turn the wheels toward the slide--the direction you want to go--to correct it. The suggestion to slow down, however, should be supplemented with the comment that you do this by letting off the gas, NOT by slamming on the brake. By braking as you slide, you ACCELERATE it because the front end is slowing down while the back end continues to carry the momentum. The end result is you either spin all the way around, or the wheels bite and you roll, or shoot out to the side like this SUV did.

[–]Meat_Confetti 1 point2 points ago

Good argument in favor of traction control. Probably would have saved that SUV.

[–]sprz 4 points5 points ago

driver of the SUV was alone and died instantly.

I don't think I've ever heard anything so sad before.

[–]ThatFuh_Qr 11 points12 points ago

better then being alone and dying slowly

[–]marcoholo 5 points6 points ago

I'm agreeing more and more with the guys in Grumpy Old Men.

[–]iiREALiiTYii 0 points1 point ago

Fucking crazy to see how something like that could happen so fast at anytime.

[–]neokodan -1 points0 points ago

[–]HerpJersey 7 points8 points ago

[–]joao_franco 9 points10 points ago

this is why I drive retarded slow in rain/snow

[–]googolplexbyte 3 points4 points ago

This is why I never drive. Thank god I live somewhere where that's viable.

[–]Macrat 2 points3 points ago

This is actually the only right thing to do, and ONLY if you really need to drive in snow..

[–]NortonAntivirus 2 points3 points ago

My stomach is turning.

[–]mcparker73 2 points3 points ago

I... just watched somebody die.

[–]Badgersarefun 16 points17 points ago

I can't go a day where i see someone die on reddit. Fuck you

[–]WC_Dirk_Gently 31 points32 points ago

What were you expecting? An 18-wheeler with a scary mask? Seriously. That combined with the first few frames of the gif, you should know what you are in for.

Deaddove.gif.

[–]MetalKev 11 points12 points ago

The thought of an 18 wheeler with a Lucha libre mask on pleases me...

[–]Winston_Legthigh[S] 14 points15 points ago

I thought about putting a NSFW tab on this but honestly, I've seen worse on television. Sorry, I'll make it NSFW if I can.

[–]Strantjanet 3 points4 points ago

Look at the rules

"MARK SEXY GIFS AND SERIOUS INJURIES NSFW FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL NOW BE REMOVED"

not sure if dying also counts for a serious injurie, hmmmmmmm.

[–]Razer1103 3 points4 points ago

Technically, death isn't an injury..it's death.

And I think what they mean by, "serious injuries" is gore and the likes.

[–]iiREALiiTYii 0 points1 point ago

This was an injury. It just happened so fast you couldn't tell. That SUV fucking disintegrated.

[–]indyK1ng -1 points0 points ago

I think when they say serious injuries I think they mean pictures of the injuries. Here we just see a vehicle fall to pieces with nothing visible of the driver (thankfully).

[–]pour_some_sugar 0 points1 point ago

Thanks -- some of us avoid many television shows for precisely this reason.

'Death-as-entertainment' does not appeal to everyone.

[–]BAM_BAM_BAM 0 points1 point ago

I would think NSFL would be a better tag than NSFW. To me, NSFW to means sexy/get you fired stuff. NSFL means super depressing or gory...

[–]Mom2Avery10 4 points5 points ago

The SUV caused that. In reality, the Tractor trailer was the victim. But, do to the size, it turned out differently...

[–]Ronem -2 points-1 points ago

The SUV did cause it.

Would you like a cookie for agreeing with OP?

[–]Mom2Avery10 0 points1 point ago

Fuck yes I would.

[–]kadude15 1 point2 points ago

holy shit!

[–]D_raetz12 0 points1 point ago

Sonofaitch!!!!! O.O

[–]noahkress 0 points1 point ago

I thought this was fake at first then I went to the comments and was like ... Fuck

[–]akafean0r 1 point2 points ago

It was in my region. youtube

[–]sivsta -1 points0 points ago

OMG

[–]googolplexbyte 0 points1 point ago

Maybe it was like when magicians stomp on a paper bag with a bottle inside and the bottle survives.

[–]MoMoSahn 1 point2 points ago

I saw something similar happen but it was a deer instead of an SUV.

Dumb ass Bambi decided to make a run for it and BAM!! Instant pulverization. It looked like it was raining blood and guts forever.

[–]charest 1 point2 points ago

This is why I'm afraid of assholes who are willing to take huge risks by bad weather just to arrive a little faster.

[–]Cavemansol 0 points1 point ago

Honestly, I always assumed that since I drive a big Land Cruiser that I'd be pretty well protected in just about any kind of collision...Guess not

[–]Blindocide 1 point2 points ago

anyone gonna point out that there was no safety divider between the lanes on a highway?

the fuck, russia?

[–]Talic_Zealot 1 point2 points ago

This is why I'm afraid of the fact that people (80% morons) are allowed to drive cars with minimal training and regulation.

[–]Smileylol 1 point2 points ago

It's not the watching someone die that gets me. It's the half a second where he is infront of the truck and knowing he's about to die.

[–]erinadic 1 point2 points ago

That's horrible.

[–]nickmarch39 0 points1 point ago

this is a good testament to why you should always avoid driving if possible in inclement weather.

[–]jessebc 1 point2 points ago

WTF dude! Find a different sub-reddit! That's messed up!

[–]jaydubs95 -1 points0 points ago

"fucking god wow" - the actual words that came out of my mouth

[–]Hoveringmouse 1 point2 points ago

You don't need to be afraid of 18-wheelers, just bad drivers

[–]netraven5000 -1 points0 points ago

It has little to do with the 18 wheeler. At that angle they likely still would've been screwed no matter who hit them.

This is why people need to learn to drive in icy conditions. Had the guy known how to recover his vehicle this might've ended differently. Or perhaps he could've sped up and taken his chances with the ditch.

[–]Blindocide 1 point2 points ago

always crash to the opposite side of the street as oncoming traffic. take the ditch, man. it's better than the other side.

[–]An0nymauz 2 points3 points ago

"How is this NSF...SHIT! THAT GUY DEAD!"

[–]The_Maddog -2 points-1 points ago

You just made me watch someone die. How about a NSFL OP you fucking idiot!

[–]TBShot -2 points-1 points ago

How is this NSFW?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

No, this is why you don't swerve into oncoming traffic.

[–]sgt0pimienta -2 points-1 points ago

why is it nsfw?

[–]A_Random_Man_45 -1 points0 points ago

Hey look at my new car what could possibl-

What did it say? Got deleted.

He was saying great find, it wasnt anything bad. I was being overly sensitive, but i still hate seeing people die as entrainment.
