Wait, we(reddit) don't like the mentalist? I really enjoy that show. Why is it New Weed Sherlock + old people?

[–]Langlie 28 points29 points ago

I don't think it's a rip on The Mentalist. The thing is that The Mentalist was clearly clearly clearly ripped off of Psych ("new weed Sherlock"), but it has a more somber, less pop-culture-y reference filled tone, which would make it more appealing to older more conservative crowds.

[–]Winged_Waffle 4 points5 points ago

I see. I read it as "made for old people"

[–]Pratchett 12 points13 points ago

I love The Mentalist. Simon Baker does a really good job bringing Jane to life.

[–]webchimp32 10 points11 points ago

I like it.

[–]LukeNygma 3 points4 points ago

Ditto!

[–]Hegs94 9 points10 points ago

It's a bold faced rip off of Psyche... I can't in good conscious watch it.

[–]terranq 11 points12 points ago

Hell, they even say as much in an episode of Psych

[–]whatevrmn 2 points3 points ago

They said as much in a few episodes. I had to watch the Mentalist to see what the hubub was about, and it is a rip off of Psych. I think it is hilarious that they call out the Mentalist on it.

[–]Nycholis 10 points11 points ago

Meanwhile, some of us can't stand psyche and watch the mentalist instead.

[–]Shawnyall 5 points6 points ago

Then there are the ones who have never heard of either. Like me.

[–]captainmorgan23 1 point2 points ago

Then there's me, what is this "television" you speak of?

[–]Winged_Waffle 0 points1 point ago

I've heard this, but never seen psych.

[–]olevaar 0 points1 point ago

I know it's a ripoff and I know it's shameful. But I still prefer The Mentalist. Something about Psych just rubs me the wrong way. Patrick Jane is a far more interesting character than Shawn Spencer.

I just wish The Mentalist could get on with the main plot and stop making episodes that are exactly alike.

[–]edjca 14 points15 points ago

I don't care what anyone says. I love them all. As for the American version, I hope it's awesome. I hope anything with a Sherlock heart succeeds tenfold.

[–]TheShader 4 points5 points ago

Agreed. I'm a Sherlock Holmes fan first, and a Sherlock fan second. I love anything I can get that is Sherlock Holmes related and well done. The more the merrier!

[–]Satai 28 points29 points ago

Why is Shawn Spencer described as a pothead? Childish is more like it, imo.

[–]GreetingsADM 21 points22 points ago

Two words: Pineapple

[–]Satai 18 points19 points ago

Wasn't that a internal joke after James picked it up in the pilot and said: "Should i slice this up for the ride?". Not an intential theme by the writers.

[–]joss33 0 points1 point ago

I love noticing pineapples everywhere. In the one episode with the bounty hunter in season 2 in the parking garage for a split second they show a pineapple poster on a pillar in the garage.

Love the show

[–]Satai 0 points1 point ago

You win a special price if you can find the pineapple in every episode, IIRC.

[–]Krispyz 1 point2 points ago

Dude, just watched that episode like an hour ago.

[–]joss33 1 point2 points ago

I watched it yesterday

[–]Krispyz 1 point2 points ago

I'm on my 5th re-watch. I may be addicted.

[–]joss33 2 points3 points ago

"You're a skeptic, you're killing my JujuBees"

"JujuBees are candy."

"Exactly"

My most violent laugh-reaction for the entire show.

[–]GreetingsADM 3 points4 points ago

I was not aware of that. I just assumed when one of the seminal modern pothead movies was called "Pineapple Express" that it would be an /r/trees thing.

[–]wagedomain 5 points6 points ago

Pineapple Express came out two years after psych, so no.

[–]GreetingsADM 0 points1 point ago

I did some research and it looks like my association with pineapples and pot came mainly from /r/trees (see here and here).

I wasn't assuming a causal relationship between Psych and Pineapple express; just two groups using common terms. Although, it appears to be in the marijuana zeitgest through a strain called "Pineapple Kush."

[–]ckingdom[S] 11 points12 points ago

Actually, that was the one that inspired this whole thing. Someone posted a Sherlock+Weed=Shawn thing a while ago, and this just sort of festered in my mind since.

[–]Satai 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, I saw the post, it startled me then too.

[–]ckingdom[S] 7 points8 points ago

Fair. It's USA, so there's no mention or even reference to Shawn smoking pot. But going by the character... I wouldn't bet against it.

[–]wagedomain 5 points6 points ago

What? What does "It's USA" mean? On Suits, another USA show, the main character smokes pot on camera several times, and one of his biggest traits at the beginning of the show is "pot smoker/dealer".

[–]Adys -1 points0 points ago

Smoking of any kind would clash horribly with the character, and with his best friend being medically knowledgeable he wouldn't hear the end of it.

Someone also mentioned the original character of Sherlock Holmes experimented with drugs and such. As a character, Sherlock is excentric, on perhaps similar levels to Shawn if you account for the +120 years (cf BBC's Sherlock).

In a lot of ways, the two characters resemble each other but smoking/drugs is way out. I would replace it with a pineapple, which is the show's icon and could represent shawn's immaturity and way of life and the show's tendency for easter eggs.

On that note, you should add Cal Lightman to the list (Lie to Me).

Edit:

Sidenote for the mentalist: I'm not sure what you're trying to convey there, but the series is definitely not "for old people". Preferences, right? What I'd do, in the same spirit, is actually Shawn minus Gus plus 10 years. Shawn and Patrick are very different in character, but over time Shawn is getting more mature (there is a startling difference between S1 and S6 in Psych). Without Burton to support him, if Shawn lost eg. Juliet to a serial killer, this is likely the place he would be at.

Some people complain about how the mentalist is a rip off Psych. Personally, Psych is my favourite series and the one I identify the most with but the mentalist is very high up the list as well. You can enjoy both of them.

[–]marilbear 1 point2 points ago

Definitely. He believed that using cocaine helped stimulate his brain [source] and this cannon is actually alluded to (though incredibly down played) in the current Sherlock series [source].

[–]Krispyz 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, Shawn is like Sherlock without the drugs/smoking... and extremely immature, instead of sociopathy.

I should also mention that I happen to be watching Psych on netflix right now.

[–]marilbear 0 points1 point ago

I love that show so much.. I can't wait for the new season to start!

[–]Krispyz 0 points1 point ago

I remember commenting on that post saying it was pretty stupid... there is nothing to imply Shawn is a stoner, I couldn't imagine it.

[–]Cat612 8 points9 points ago

As a fan of Sherlock, Monk, Psych, House, and The Mentalist, this diagram is just amazing.

[–]a_can_of_solo 7 points8 points ago

now do batman.

[–]ZachityZach 9 points10 points ago

Sherlock + dead parents?

[–]SecretBlogon 6 points7 points ago

Sherlock - Parents.

[–]jimboknows6916 11 points12 points ago

i did the sherlock+weed=shawn thing. my thinking behind shawn being a pothead was not actually me thinking he was a true "pothead" but more of the generalized pothead mentality...i dont see shawn as a marijuana user, but his attitude kind of fit that vibe...

also, i like the graphic!

EDIT: Also, in the later seasons, i can definitely see shawn as a pot user...the first few seasons he didnt really give that vibe

[–]platypuspracticus 2 points3 points ago

his attitude kind of fit that vibe

It's best summed up by the Church of the SubGenius concept of "slack".

[–]indyK1ng 2 points3 points ago

Who is that in the first picture?

[–]TheGoodOttoKatz 15 points16 points ago

That, my friend, is Basil Rathbone. A great actor, but not the best Sherlock Holmes.

That award, in my opinion, goes to Jeremy Brett

[–]indyK1ng 1 point2 points ago

Thank you.

[–]ckingdom[S] 2 points3 points ago

Brett had much better writing, but Rathbone WAS IS Sherlock Holmes. (IMO)

[–]blaw91 0 points1 point ago

I respectfully disagree. William Gillette is Sherlock Holmes, because he is who later actors based their work on, even if he is not the most famous today. He also used the money he made playing Sherlock to just randomly build a castle to live in, which is pretty awesome.

[–]mitchellele 1 point2 points ago

I don't watch much tv. what is the 4th one down, i dont recognise it

[–]theinklings 4 points5 points ago

That's Psych. Great show. I'd recommend it.

[–]torchdexto 1 point2 points ago

I happened to be watching it as I came across this and made a 3^ face when I saw Shawn on the chart... List... Thingie...

[–]lurveloaveluff 6 points7 points ago

Can we really say anything about the US Sherlock Holmes yet, considering none of us have seen it? Also, Watson being a woman is a pretty big change to not be mentioned.

My favorite one is the equation for Guy Richie's Sherlock Holmes, haha.

[–]Granite-M 1 point2 points ago

I always thought that the Guy Ritchie Sherlock seemed to have a fair amount of Indiana Jones, the second movie with a rather larger dose than the first.

[–]lurveloaveluff 2 points3 points ago

Didn't get to see the second one, but I really liked the first one. I could see Indiana Jones in it though. But also a lot of more modern action films. Maybe more Snatch than Lethal Weapon though. It was just a funny way to put it.

[–]cairdeas 2 points3 points ago

I think lethal weapon fits not only for the action, but also for the "buddy cop" relationship he gets for Sherlock and Watson.

[–]Gooflactus 4 points5 points ago

That...actually makes sense.

[–]DocDerry 1 point2 points ago

I like Johnny lee miller. If elementary sucks it won't be due to him. Lucy Lui on the other hand.

[–]Teslanaut 1 point2 points ago

What about Lie to Me? Where does that fit in?

[–]beauyouknow 1 point2 points ago

Oh god my dad loves the Mentalist so much............
