The "Dark side of the moon" doesn't exist, there is a side that's always turned away from the Earth, but that side gets sunlight too.

Wait, why is this guy getting downvotes? He's technically correct, isn't he? Every part of the moon gets sunlight at one point or another. At any given point there is a side of the moon that is dark, but that side of the moon will probably have sunlight on it at some point.

However, I suppose what he said isn't exactly relevant, but it's still correct.

The dark side of the moon is the side that's not currently getting sun. Just like the dark side of the Earth. In the picture, the moon is full. And the meme face is on this side. Therefore it's entirely conceivable that the other meme is on the side of the moon that is currently dark.

tl;dr : imagine you're in a halo game, turnig around a guy to shoot him. Because you're aiming him, he only see your face, as we see only one side of the moon.

But in the meantime, since sun don't move, the guy can see you facing the sun, fully lighted, and when you make a half turn around the guy, you're turning your back at the sun and your face is in your own shadow.

You're the moon, the guy you're shooting at is the earth, and the sun is the sun.

That's how it work.

Are you trolling or stupid? This is basic astronomy, the sun is on one side of the earth and the moon on the other, some of the sunlight gets blocked by the Earth, casting a shadow on the moon.

Well, VikingSlayer is wrong about why there are moon phases, but there is a very simple explanation that doesn't conflict with the explanation given in that video on why we see the same side of the moon all the time. I explain it here.

No. I thought this until I saw a better diagram The bright part is the part facing the sun. A new moon is between the earth and sun while a full moon is on the side of the earth away from the sun. A half moon is to the side of the earth so you see the half facing toward the sun and the half facing away.

That's actually not how it works. the sun is shining on both the Earth and the moon. So therefor, half of the moon and half of the Earth is illuminated, correct? But the reason why it's a crescent moon is because we're only seeing a portion of the illuminated part of the moon, since most of the illuminated part of the moon is angled away from us.

If the Earth was casting a shadow on the moon, it would be a partial eclipse, which doesn't happen nearly as often as moon phases.

I'm sorry, but isn't Mars just as barren? It doesn't have a breathable atmosphere, its soil doesn't have the appropriate nutrients to support plant life and it doesn't have very much water.

It seems to me, that you'd need to change the entire planet to live there, so you might as well just colonize the Moon instead. It would take about the same amount (maybe slightly more since Mars does have nitrogen) of effort and the Moon is a hell of a lot closer. It takes a minimum of six months to get to Mars, and that's only when the Earth and Mars align once a year.

So far it seems there's more useful resources on Mars to keep a habitable colony going. A thin, unbreathable atmosphere still has some benefits over not having any atmosphere, plus any water that we find there is water we don't have to accelerate off of Earth.
