this is more sad than funny really

[–]mik3 1447 points1448 points ago

How can people that fucking stupid exist. How did they get through kindergarten/elementary school?

*edit spelling

[–]nulledit 1510 points1511 points ago

How could they go through life without seeing Wheel of Fortune?

[–]capnsouth 807 points808 points ago

Perhaps they should buy a clue.

[–]dizzy_lizzy 584 points585 points ago

This is giving me a raging clue.

[–]iObeyTheHivemind 280 points281 points ago

I just got clue glue everywhere

[–]99Dilemmas 172 points173 points ago

My clue is pointing over there.

[–]ANAL_QUEEN 53 points54 points ago

Over where?

[–]renn187 40 points41 points ago

Under there!

[–]Trogdorocks 63 points64 points ago

Underwear?!

[–]oXBoneSXo 3 points4 points ago

I'm shooting my clue goo everywhere

[–]MorseCodeDude 8 points9 points ago

My clue's blue

[–]BONER_ASSASSIN 54 points55 points ago

Oh, really?

[–]tokomini 267 points268 points ago

People who annoy you.

N_GGERS.

[–]jdizzle707 243 points244 points ago

Ohhh...naggers....

[–]Framsky 24 points25 points ago

Now you have to kiss Jesse Jackson's ass

[–]cleetus76 7 points8 points ago

apologize!

[–]Esc4p3 139 points140 points ago

Neggers. Seriously, insulting a girl doesn't make her sleep with you.

[–]MyLittleButtercup 45 points46 points ago

Actually, I know a girl who did just that. I was standing right there when he insulted her and she had a one night stand with the loser.

[–]pizzasoup 51 points52 points ago

"Oh, you don't want to? I guess you're too chicken..."

"WHAT? You take that back!"

[–]2Weird2Live2Rare2Die 75 points76 points ago

And that's how I got head from Michael J. Fox.

[–]reverendfrag4 25 points26 points ago

You can get the same effect by duct taping a fleshlight to a Hitachi Magic Wand.

[–]2Weird2Live2Rare2Die 17 points18 points ago

Upvote for making me chuckle, but you're misunderstanding the function of negging. So do 'pickup artists', for that matter. It doesn't make the gal sleep with you, it weeds out the ones with too much self-esteem to let some random, awkward, manipulative asshole fuck them within hours of first saying hello. That the ones it 'works on' stick around long enough to be pressured into sex is just a case of confirmation bias.

[–]GloriousWaste 30 points31 points ago

[–]What_is_this_1990 19 points20 points ago

I would never buy a vowel on Wheel of Fortune. I am too cheap. I want my $250, I don't need to know those stupid silent E's.

[–]Caucasian_Knight 11 points12 points ago

Yeah, I've seen people try and buy a "Q" on WoF.

[–]ThatScienceGirl 7 points8 points ago

Or Countdown. That even has some maths in too

[–]derrtydenim 164 points165 points ago

Books don't matter when you have SWAG. facepalm

[–]UncleTedGenneric 60 points61 points ago

Swag don't care bout vowels and constantants.

[–]alphabad 104 points105 points ago

SWG

[–]feureau 312 points313 points ago

With great difficulty

[–]NotaMethAddict 301 points302 points ago

I disagree. Were you never in elementary school? You pretty much have to try to fail to not pass to the next grade.

[–]Nodonn226 73 points74 points ago

And even if you do fail, your parents just throw a fucking fit and tell the teacher they are suing EVERYONE and they pass! That easy.

[–]DigitalChocobo 41 points42 points ago

It's a shame. Parents like that are the reason people can get all the way through school without knowing what a vowel is.

[–]bombtrack411 15 points16 points ago

If we paid for every idiot to repeat a grade we would bankrupt our school systems in some areas.

[–]RobTheBuilderMA 227 points228 points ago

That's the point. These people are borderline handicapped.

[–]L22 384 points385 points ago

I'm not sure I agree. It takes a profound level of laziness to manage not to learn something like this. Truly handicapped students work hard and many of them do understand basic concepts of our language.

To compare the laziness of these people to humans with real disabilities is to demean the hard work that those with handicaps do every day in order to become the most successful and productive citizen that they can be.

[–]HillbillyMan 101 points102 points ago

handicap does not necessarily mean disability. it's just something that hinders a person, ie, stupidity/laziness is technically a handicap.

EDIT: I understand that the generally accepted meaning of "handicapped" does imply more severe situations, but the simple fact is that the literal definition is not so, and as such, my comment is true, and I did not intend to belittle people who are severely disabled in anyway. I was just saying we don't need to assume that "handicapped" only refers to disabled people, at least not all of the time.

[–]Dksieosfj 81 points82 points ago

As a stupid person myself, I prefer the term handicapable.

[–]tokomini 29 points30 points ago

noted. I'll tag you as 'handicapable'.

[–]hawkgpg 19 points20 points ago

That was incredibly profound and enlightening. I've never really looked to make that comparison. That people with regularly functioning brains will end up wasting them away while others struggle so they can appear to not be handicapped. Gah! I bet you'll have more upvotes the most of the comments above you.

[–]SorryIreddit 64 points65 points ago

Everytime I see something heart warming or an amazing feat of human awesomeness on Reddit, I see something like this and lose my faith in humanity all over again.

[–]troxnor 82 points83 points ago

I saw that meme too.

[–]FlutterShy- 32 points33 points ago

I didn't. But I know that feel.

[–]MethPlayboy 5 points6 points ago

Not exactly true...

[–]feureau 3 points4 points ago

Not for those people.

[–]NotANoveltyUser 26 points27 points ago

without vowels

FTFY

[–]Katieeamberr 26 points27 points ago

Isn't Y sometimes. Considered a vowel?

[–]CowThing 48 points49 points ago

Why is did you. Put a period there?

[–]jbkrule 53 points54 points ago

Why is did you. Put an is in there?

[–]CowThing 16 points17 points ago

Because I'm silly and didn't reread!

[–]Hunt800 17 points18 points ago

Probably on an iPhone?

[–]panders2reddit 73 points74 points ago

*kindergarten. Ironic, no?

[–]rugdoctor 39 points40 points ago

to be fair, it's a german loanword.

[–]lesslucid 18 points19 points ago

But then they should translate both words: "child garden".

Now I have a mental image of a "gardener" watering the children...

[–]nomnomgardettos 35 points36 points ago

Same. Except in my mental image the gardener is a homeless man, and there's no water, just urine.

[–]FakeSociopath 46 points47 points ago

I'm a dyslexic man with poor understanding of English grammar. I've found you don't need to understand your language to use it functionally.

In no way shape or form am I condoning ignorance. I just don't believe ignorance is a sign of lack of intelligence.

if this seems off topic, I'm sorry. I associate this as an explanation for how they graduated.

[–]LeeENTfield 43 points44 points ago

I'm dyslexic as well. But vowles? come on A, E, I, O, U and sometimes Y. How hard is that to remember?

[–]do7com 48 points49 points ago

Upvote for "vowles." I see what you did there.

[–]x755x 71 points72 points ago

He doesn't. :(

[–]psychoticapes 29 points30 points ago

Dyslexics of the world, untie!

[–]Gantry 32 points33 points ago

This is true. Knowing the difference between vowels and consonants will not help you at all in your History, Science, Math, Health or even most of your English courses.

It won't help you flip burgers at McDonalds nor will it help you build a Mars rover.

I'm not saying you shouldn't learn about stuff that won't directly benefit you in your career. But it's not surprising that someone could survive in the modern world without knowing such a fact.

But for the love of Ra, if you don't know something, please don't brag about how little you know on twitter.

[–]staplesgowhere 5 points6 points ago

What I don't understand is why, when people like this encounter something they aren't familiar with, they don't just take 30 seconds to Google it instead of looking like total buffoons.

The only conclusion I can make is that they celebrate their ignorance, as though it's a badge of honor to have no knowledge of something that is second nature to a 6 year old.

[–]monkey_man_lives 16 points17 points ago

but to be ignorant of such a simple concept of a widely-known topic (your damn language) that is FORCE taught to you at school since you can start speaking just shows how much these people don't value knowledge

[–]SelectaRx 9 points10 points ago

FORCE taught

Educ-rape-tion.

Also, something about Star Wars.

[–]quadcem 36 points37 points ago

No Child Left Behind

[–]TheSourTruth 87 points88 points ago

Okay, no. That's not why they don't know what a vowel is. Please. Yes no child left behind is stupid, but it's not why they don't know what a vowel is.

[–]OurNameIsLegion 67 points68 points ago

Shh no tears. Only dreams now.

[–]Possibly_bad_grammar 10 points11 points ago

Pardon my ignorance, but I'm not really familiar with NCLB. Will you kindly explain it to me like I'm five?

[–]a_park_bench 20 points21 points ago

It's an act passed in the US saying that to receive funding, each school has to have their students take (and preferably pass) a standardized test each year. If you've been in US schools in the last 10 years or so, you know what I'm talking about, the test that every student of every grade has to take towards the end of the year.

Basically it means that instead of teaching the students, teachers are focused more on making sure the kids can just memorize and regurgitate exactly what's on the standardized test. If they don't focus on that, then students might get lower scores, which would cut funding for that school.

[–]spidersthrash 26 points27 points ago

Wait, what? They cut funding to the schools that do worse?! How does that make any sense? Surely the schools doing badly represent a weakness that needs to be strengthened, not a leak that needs to be plugged!

Jesus Christ, season 4 of The Wire just made so much more sense...

[–]Pake1000 13 points14 points ago

Federal requirement for standardized testing that would be be used for performance based funding (i.e. better scores, more money from the Department of Education). Was bound to fail not because it was a bad idea (most countries have some form of it), but because A) the teachers union does not agree with teacher performance being determined by student tests scores, B) a severe lack of funding because of Department of Education budget cuts, and C) education is still controlled at the state and county level, opening the door for corruption where states set minimum scores to be excessively low. Another teachers union argument against NCLB was that it forces teachers to teach for the tests, not for the material.

[–]NeedsToShutUp 3 points4 points ago

There were other issues as well. Mostly it was pretty bureaucratic and designed as a one size fits all solution, ignoring things like ESL programs and special ed.

[–]mastermike14 5 points6 points ago

also no one really failed hence the title 'No Child Left Behind'. It became practically impossible to hold a student back a grade so the teachers just passed the kid on. It takes up the attitude of 'Heres a D, not my problem anymore'. It focuses on grades rather than education. There is a very strong and credible argument that standardized tests are not effective at judging whether someone has learned the material.

[–]LordJelly 1 point2 points ago

Kinda've ironic in a way.

Not sad for Max, he looks like he is only six. I will let him pass. Though his other computer skills makes this suspicious.

[–]Tyaedalis 86 points87 points ago

I believe Max was making a joke. There is indeed no "vowel" in "Max".

[–]p3n1x 76 points77 points ago

What is more funny than the picture is the 100's of comments from people here trying to flex their superior education when they are the ones who missed the joke and the fact Max put the word "vowel" in quotes. Mvowelax, vowelmax, maxvowel, mavowelx, Am I wasting my time typing all this out?

[–]bogweasel87 3 points4 points ago

He fooled me till I spotted the quotes,no you are not wasting your time typing this all out good sir/madame.

[–]doubleyouteef 2 points3 points ago

It's not funny, it's fucking sad.

Either twitter has just as many trolls pretending to be idiots. Or I really need to stop giving so many people the benefit of the doubt.

[–]Hight5 499 points500 points ago

Pretending to be stupid is THE LOWEST form of trolling. Oh no, you pretended to be an idiot in a world full of idiots. Sure got us good.

[–]Harro65 6 points7 points ago

Wouldn't this fall into the category of sarcasm?

[–]donpapillon 14 points15 points ago

It's the lowest because it's so easy to sound beleivable.

[–]Nerosquito 4 points5 points ago

Are you telling me that "how is babby formed?" was all a lie?

[–]cack-o-demon 3 points4 points ago

Pretending to be stupid is just a form of self-depreciating humour that, depending on circumstance, can be as funny as all other sorts.

That you don't like clowns because they act stupid doesn't diminish their value or the fact that they're valid forms of expression or entertainment to others, whether they be idiots, as you claim, or not.

Say what you will about the one who plays the fool, but it does take superior intellect in order to do so. To pretend to be smart, however...

[–]Injuredism 5 points6 points ago

People like this have always existed, just platforms like Twitter and Reddit are natural magnifying glasses.

[–]soundthealarm21 229 points230 points ago

I don't understand why they wouldn't just look up what a vowel is on google instead of making themselves look complete retards. I suppose that they want to look like complete retards... What is the world coming to?

[–]Mindrust 132 points133 points ago

This pisses me off the most. Sure they're stupid for not knowing, but they're even more fucking stupid for not looking it up.

[–]IcarusByNight 126 points127 points ago

I think the biggest sin is thinking that being ignorant is "cool".

[–]ArgonautJason 51 points52 points ago

If they're stupid enough not to know what a vowel is, they are probably too stupid to think to look it up on Google.

[–]toychristopher 27 points28 points ago

People wear their stupidity like a badge of honor.

[–]suzepie 12 points13 points ago

To me, curiosity has always been a hallmark of intelligence. Lack of curiosity/interest is the opposite. Those who aren't curious enough to seek out their own answers are probably not going to learn much in life. I was going to say, "learn much outside of school," but it looks like they don't learn much in school, either.

[–]cIumsythumbs 21 points22 points ago

We need a plague...

[–]tdn 117 points118 points ago

Where's the Welsh when you need them?

[–]LunaCumberbitch 45 points46 points ago

I love their total disregard for vowels! I was reading something in a catalogue earlier in Welsh and trying to pronounce 6+ letter words with no vowels is crazy difficult.

[–]Amadan 69 points70 points ago

Of course they have vowels. It's just that their list is bigger, including W and Y.

[–]iamadogwhatisthis 15 points16 points ago

Y is sometimes considered a vowel in English as well.

For example, in the word 'cry' the vowel is considered to be y.

Generally it is considered a vowel if:

  • The Y is pronounced like "ee"

  • It's used to start a word like "You"

  • It's between consonants or at the end of a word

Otherwise, it's a consonant.

Edit: Looking back at this the list isn't really complete for all instances. For example, a long i sound at the end of a word when no other vowels are present isn't in the list (and happens to be the example I gave). If anyone is really interested in knowing all the cases, I'd recommend looking it up.

[–]Idiolectacy 7 points8 points ago

It's used to start a word like "You"... or at the end of a word.

No, generally when y is used to start a word, and sometimes at the end of a word*, it is a consonant (semivowel if we want to be more technical).

The only time y is a consonant is when it makes the /j/ sound as in the words yes, yesterday, you, beyond, year, play*, day*, grey*, etc.

Every other time it is a vowel.

*depending on accent.

[–]CookieComet 4 points5 points ago

As a Welsh person, thank you.

[–]FormicationIsEvil 4 points5 points ago

I was born and raised in the USA. When I was in grade school we were taught that the vowels in English were a, e, i, o, u and sometimes y and w.

Why else would I have known to find these links? source 1 source 2

[–]TheJackalope231 3 points4 points ago

Now here's a language that actually gives zero fucks about what a vowel is.

[–]dm42 11 points12 points ago

Welsh person here: don't worry; most of us don't understand it either.

[–]I_am_not_a_horse 140 points141 points ago

So I looked up the Max guys' profile. Turns out his tweet was a joke. He means the word vowel isn't in his name. That's why 'vowel' is in apostrophes. Here's a tweet from him clarifying what he means. The joke was poorly executed and kind of flew over everyones heads, including OP's and everyone in the comments so far.

Unfortunately I can't defend all the other idiots in this picture.

[–]emmyloo815 14 points15 points ago

I'm glad I wasn't the only one that did some snooping. The first three it looks like are claiming it was a joke and the two after that seem relatively proud because they're now "twitter famous."

[–]mysticrudnin 42 points43 points ago

I got it right away.

[–]canopener 4 points5 points ago

Those aren't apostrophes, they're single quotation marks (or in the UK, "inverted commas").

[–]NotaMethAddict 282 points283 points ago

Yes, in fact these people have always existed. There have always been dumb people and there always will be.

[–]rwg 94 points95 points ago

I used to work in an academic building at a large public university. My office was on the first floor near one of the elevators, so at the beginning of each semester, I saw a lot of confused students wandering around aimlessly.

One year, a student stopped me in front of the elevator and asked where room number [whatever] was. I explained that the first number was the floor it was on, the remaining digits were close to 000, so it was at that end of the building, and it was an odd numbered room, so it was on the hallway at the back side of the building. I pointed roughly in the direction she needed to go.

She stood there for a few seconds before asking, "What's an odd number?" When I explained even and odd numbers to her, I got the distinct impression she thought I was just making shit up.

[–]RageMeSaveMe 43 points44 points ago

There are too many people in the world like this. I interned with a woman who told me my blood pressure readings were inaccurate because they did not end in a five. Manual blood pressure readings never end in odd numbers. She had no idea what an odd number was and kept insisting my numbers (0,2,4,6,8) were not whole numbers. In her world 5 was the only whole number.

Ater 2 days of trying to make her understand what a freaking moron she was and to just listen to me, I reported her. Was it because of the "whole number" fiasco no. I found out she was making up blood pressure readings!! Some guy walked in red as a cherry tomato, she gets a reading of "135/85". I double checked it, 188/122. She cried and stomped her feet making a complete ass out of herself in front of the doctor and patient how wrong I was because no body could have a blood pressure that high and that you only ever pump the cuff to a mother fucking whole number like 135.

[–]MyLittleButtercup 14 points15 points ago

So? What happened after that? Did she finally believe you? Did she get fired for being stupid? Don't leave us hanging, man!

[–]RageMeSaveMe 30 points31 points ago

she certainly got fired. but only because i spoke to the coordinator at my school about this incident. the doctor was willing to give her another shot. he was a very nice man and wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt.

it turned out she went to my school the year before and had dropped out because her GPA fell below a 2.0 and she couldn't pull it back up in time to move on to the next level. she never received any certifications and lied to get her job. lied about graduating, lied about her certification status, lied about the school she went to.

[–]2Weird2Live2Rare2Die 42 points43 points ago

I like to imagine that she dropped out not because school was hard, but because she came to the conclusion that the school was a fraud because her GPA wasn't 5.0.

[–]justaninja 25 points26 points ago

You should have just put her out of her misery.

[–]Nsraftery 2 points3 points ago

I would have punched her in the gut.

[–]dogbreath101 9 points10 points ago

[–]Woughter821 14 points15 points ago

Sadly those aren't the only people in this world that don't know what a vowel is. When I walked into my first day of 10th grade several years ago, the first thing our teacher did, was ask the class "Ok, who here knows what a vowel is." I raised my hand, and felt awkward, as in the class of about 30 , I was the only person with my hand raised. My teacher asked me to join her in the hallway for a brief conversation. She proceeded to walk me to the office, and force me to drop her class, and join the honors english class that was running during the same time slot.

It opened my eyes to the sad fact that the children I sat beside throughout the years had never really paid attention in class.

I practically never raised my hand in school, doesn't mean I didn't know an answer.

[–]Platypussy 1 point2 points ago

The cutoff for 10th grade honors English was being familiar with the word "vowel"?? Consider me mindfucked.

[–]therocketflyer 15 points16 points ago

Well heres the thread for the lazy. Sadly I think this is real.

http://twitter.com/#!/search/?q=%23TweetYourNameWithNoVowels&src=hash

[–]dyslexicpandas 51 points52 points ago

Actually, going through all of these people's actual pages, they were all kidding. It's a real thread yes, but people aren't really asking what vowels are.

[–]TheShader 6 points7 points ago

But people will ignore this so they can feel superior to all the 'stupid' people of the world. I predict in another 30 years 15-25 year Olds will post old All That and Mad TV skits with titles like 'Wow, I can't believe people in the 90s were actually this stupid' and people will ignore that people like Ms. Swan never actually existed so they can feel superior to the previous generations.

[–]kenneth1221 34 points35 points ago

FCK. FTH N HMNTY: LST.

[–]ArcticSpaceman 9 points10 points ago

So in over 10 hours of posting you found 6 people this stupid? Not that bad of a ratio honestly.

[–]alaskan-assassin 10 points11 points ago

[–]gremlinz43 4 points5 points ago

It's time we remove all warning labels and start thinning out the herd

[–]PhreakedCanuck 1 point2 points ago

So much stupid it hurts

[–]kihadat 13 points14 points ago

In their defense, they probably know what vowels are but don't remember that they are called vowels.

[–]Rixxer 9 points10 points ago

They post that from their smart phone instead of just looking it up on their smart phone... They're either attention whores or retards.

[–]Skywarper 6 points7 points ago

Both.

[–]mysticrudnin 5 points6 points ago

I'd wager that a ton of people on reddit don't actually know what a vowel is. "AEIOU / Y" doesn't cut it, because that doesn't explain anything.

I see the absolute dumbest shit on reddit regarding language in almost every day. And some of that stuff is upvoted to the top.

You can pick on these people, but if I know twitter, half of them are joking. And those that aren't? At least they admit they don't know, rather than spreading actual misinformation.

[–]Damnskipp 52 points53 points ago

I don't want to live on this planet anymore...

[–]AgreesWithIdiots 265 points266 points ago

No, I like this planet. We should make them leave.

[–]feureau 19 points20 points ago

Naah. Some of the other planets are way cooler. Sign me up for a one way trip to Mars.

[–]NotANoveltyUser 52 points53 points ago

Move to El Paso. Its pretty much the same thing, but warmer.

[–]feureau 4 points5 points ago

Fine, but get rid of all the life forms first.

[–]NotANoveltyUser 25 points26 points ago

But you'll only be living around....

~sunglasses~

Aliens....

YEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH

Okay, I won't do that again.

[–]AgreesWithIdiots 17 points18 points ago

I want to be on Uranus.

[–]sinjuhien 11 points12 points ago

[–]XenophonTheBoss 16 points17 points ago

[–]ajh1717 11 points12 points ago

Decades? More faith in our country than me...

[–]kking15 11 points12 points ago

nggrs jst wnt fll rtrd

[–]eldiablo3334 26 points27 points ago

That's it! All my hope in humanity is lost, our future is grim. I knew what a vowel was when I was 4 dammit!

[–]jonathanrdt 51 points52 points ago

They probably did, too, but the point is that I still do.

[–]shadybee 7 points8 points ago

How does one forget such a thing?

[–]Nattyfrank 9 points10 points ago

A-E-I-O-U and sometimes Y. I shall succeed in life and stuff!

[–]HawaiianDry 8 points9 points ago

I couldn't find the picture I was thinking of, but it's a drawing of all the vowels sitting around a table having a fancy party. The door is open, however, as Y has just burst into the room, aghast that it was not invited to the soiree.

[–]Dukuz 28 points29 points ago

They probably did too, but the point is that I still do.

Fixed that up a bit for you.

[–]JSlim 24 points25 points ago

Maybe he put the I in italics because its a vowel.

[–]HillbillyMan 5 points6 points ago

or that he was comparing himself with the idiots on twitter, italicizing the I in order to differentiate between himself and the ignorant ones. unnecessary but understandable.

[–]authlolz 5 points6 points ago

That's not a vowel!

[–]CraineTwo 8 points9 points ago

Don't even joke about that.

[–]CRAG7 13 points14 points ago

Stop being dramatic.

[–]Ioniaz 5 points6 points ago

These people should have failed grade 2.

[–]MegaWolf 5 points6 points ago

There are plenty of stupid people in the world but who the hell is this Butt Pulp?

[–]dreamleaking 7 points8 points ago

I use my reddit screenname "Dreamleaking" without vowels on some websites. I've always pronounced "drmlkng" as "dremel king." Because of this image, I googled it and realized that it spells out Dr. Martin Luther King.

wat

[–]paulfknwalsh 3 points4 points ago

dumb people with smart phones.

[–]GLAZED_BEAR_ANUS 6 points7 points ago

  • You're a vowel max.
  • i'm a WHAAAAAT?
  • a vowel.
  • I'm not a vowel, I'm just max!
