I'm just going to say this here again.

This thing, right here, a spot on Jupiter, is big enough to hold three entire fucking Earths. For you americans, that's ten times the distance between Los Angeles and New York. It would take you twenty days of pure driving at highway speeds to get from one side to the other. The small drops of turbulence you see around it? Most are bigger than all of Russia.

Not just that, but it's a gigantic hurricane. A gigantic hurricane that can englob the earth three times over. And it's been going on for at least 400 years... that we know of. It's nowhere near done hurricaning around, too. It's predicted to last hundreds more.

You know what a Category 5 Hurricane is? It's the highest kind of wind speeds you get on Earth hurricanes. Anywhere above 250 km/h does the trick. That's twice the maximum allowed car speed on most highways in the world.

This fucking monster has speeds of around 650 km/h. That's an average. They keep getting stronger, too. It wouldn't just demolish your house in a matter of seconds, it would vaporise everything you've ever seen and turn everything into compost before you even realise what's going on.

What's more? That creature has a little brother that's still growing and is almost half its size. You know. Just enough to fit our planet in it. But really, it's not that big. Not once you realize that Jupiter is over a thousand times larger than the Earth.

Read all of this again and just try to swallow the scale of it all.

At the second link, notice the 10 MB TIFF image available. This seems to be the original source image. It's large enough to be cropped to the OP's 1825x1190.

Good point! It seems like a really well done touch-up. I obviously can't speak to its color accuracy, having never seen it in person :P But scrutinizing the original, you can see all the now vivid shapes and patterns, just much more muted.

I was also skeptic when I first saw the photo. Turns out its a touched up version of the Voyager 1 flyby mosaic.

Bjorn Jonsson did the original composite. I did the retouch and used Neat Image to try and bring a clearer, smoother picture. Focus Magic was used for sharpening. Certainly not for scientific studies.

Edit: Heres the original. Really not sure why so many people took to the retouch. The original is fantastic by itself. I did the retouch in all of like 10 minutes.

I don't know what it is about Jupiter or space really, but it scares the hell out of me. Just the thought of the level of technology that we will need to get to in order to be able to investigate further is damn near giving me a panic attack. I mean the damn planet doesn't even have a clearly defined surface. The majority of it is made of helium and hydrogen. The only way those gases form a liquid is under intense pressure and/or extreme cold. To get them as a solid you are talking down right insane pressure & cold. The temperature in the clouds is about -145C and then near the center it is estimated to be about 24,000C. IMO one of the most interesting things about Jupiter is that it has volume greater than all of the other planets combined or you could think of it as greater than 1000 Earths.

I think other planets scare me because of the fact that no one has ever experienced it. That being said, I still hope that we continue to explore.

So the different colors. I have never really seen an explanation for the different colors. I assume they are compositionally different. Do we know what composition each color represents?

Here is a paper on that.

In addition to aerosols, spatial contrasts in gaseous composition (PH3, NH3 and para-H2) derived from CIRS and ground-based imaging can be used to trace vertical motion in the Jovian atmosphere. PH3 and NH3 were derived from CIRS spectra simultaneously with aerosol opacity for the first time (Fig. 4). The entire 600-1400 cm−1 CIRS spectral range was modeled using the techniques described by Fletcher et al. (2009a), building on the work of Irwin et al. (2004) and Achterberg et al. (2006). For PH3 we fix the mole fraction below 1 bar to 1.9 ppm (Fletcher et al., 2009a) and vary only the fractional scale height f; for NH3 we scale the saturated vapour pressure abundance to determine the mole fraction at 550 mbar (the peak of the weighting function). As ground-based filtered imaging is insensitive to the distribution of PH3, we scale the NH3 and aerosol distributions alone to match the VISIR imaging (Figs. 6-7). Finally, we present the first map of the para-H2 fraction derived from the ground (Fig. 9, using COMICS imaging) for comparison with Voyager/IRIS results (Sada et al., 1996; Simon-Miller et al., 2002)
