I know people are having a good laugh at the situation, but it's actually not an uncommon thing at all. Lots of families, my own included, in the aftermath of the Holocaust gave up their colors and raised their kids to be proud ethnic-Germans, Hungarians, Poles, etc. My great aunt used to visit family in Poland, but she somehow always forgot to bring her camera and their names just seemed to slip everyone's minds when you asked. I'm surprised he didn't notice any thing was up sooner.

Uh oh ah, you're playing a bit fast & loose here IMHO. Depending on where you look, nationality may not have been a concept at all back then, and Judaism in the form pertinent to the discussion here may only have sprung up in the Hellenistic period. Also it's arguable if gods with much the same myths and rites but different names really constitute religions, or if you really could argue that all cults stopped at the borders of kingdoms.

In short, I think you'd get into a lot of trouble defending that statement in that form or end up defining the words in a way that only a tautology remains. Also I'm not 100% sure why the situation 3000 years ago is necessarily pertinent to the race/religion duality in antisemitism today.

"Anti-semetic" was a term coined the refer to those who specifically hate ethnic Jews, regardless of their religion. There is a fine line between religious and ethnic Judaism, and part of that includes maternal inheritance.

In short, it wasn't anti-semites who came up with the term anyway.
