Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Now they all have colorful lungs!

[–]mrbucket777 100 points101 points ago

Seriously, just about every pigment used in Holi is toxic in one way or another.

[–]seeashbashrun 48 points49 points ago

There are some that aren't--my local festival actually prohibits most brands because it uses a non-toxic kind. To be extra safe, they will not let kids in without a mask. It's pretty cool, it allows an asthmatic like me to participate.

[–]mrbucket777 76 points77 points ago

Then you probably aren't in India where such consumer protections aren't really a thing.

[–]seeashbashrun 17 points18 points ago

Nope I am not. Portlander, currently living in Utah, moving to Colorado. Far from India any place you choose of those three.

[–]no_pants-all_class 11 points12 points ago

I had no idea Holi happens in the US too!

Welcome to CO, I'm moving in too.

[–]seeashbashrun 2 points3 points ago

Sweet! I'm excited to live there, I'll be there for at least a couple of years :)

There is an amazing Holi Festival at the Hare Krishna temple in Spanish Fork. The people who put it on are incredibly devoted to their faith as well as being impressive hosts for their event. I've been three times and love it!

[–]piasenigma 4 points5 points ago

Mormons celebrate Holi, no idea why.

[–]EthicalReasoning 0 points1 point ago

ask mitt romney at his next campaign rally

[–]obievil 0 points1 point ago

They don't, but they like to attend the events where they do celebrate Holi.

[–]cbs_ 0 points1 point ago

Yup, it's the thing for all the new-agers and instagrammers/lomographers.

[–]munnajo 1 point2 points ago

Actually every city which has a Indian Association (which is pretty much all cities in the USA) celebrate Holi. Probably check Facebook pages for them or a Indian grocer will definitely have information regarding the holiday celebrations.

[–]itriedtoquitreddit 1 point2 points ago

Oh, I really hope that Holi catches on all across the U.S.

[–]coolzero20 0 points1 point ago

What part of CO ya moving to?

[–]seeashbashrun 5 points6 points ago

Fort Collins, I am very excited :). I've visited many times and it reminds me of a neighborhood version of Portland. Plus, it's super bike friendly and, as a cyclist, this is pretty important to me!

My most common experience with vehicles in Utah and (being a cyclist) is, "Oh my gosh, what is that thing, I should probably hit it before it spreads."

[–]obievil 0 points1 point ago

As a former Utahan who's moved to Eugene, you have my pity for living there. Run away, as fast as you can.

[–]Zephyr87 2 points3 points ago

As shocking as this might seem to you, we do actually have consumer protections.

[–]want2travel 0 points1 point ago

but its so hot and there's so many people

[–]jasontimmur 10 points11 points ago

Cornstarch, mix with food coloring. Allow to dry.

Far less toxic than arsenic.

[–]seeashbashrun 0 points1 point ago

That might be what they use--I'm not sure off the top of my head. I'm just happy that it's non-toxic.

[–]DreaG 2 points3 points ago

The Holi Festival this year in Utah was insanely crowded. And it actually bothered me to see the amount of trash that was being thrown around. And you're right, the colors made there at that temple were made out of organic materials and cornstarch.

[–]seeashbashrun 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, that did make me sad :(. I went for the first time about five years ago. Much smaller and (for me) more fun. But, if you go earlier in the day, it is more fun.

It's hard to make people respectful to religious areas that are not relevant to them. I kind of jumped down someone's throat because they were riding on one of the elephant statues to take a picture. I shouted at them for being disrespectful to something that was sacred to the temple goers.

On the bright side, the temple makes a lot of revenue at the event and they do not mind picking up afterwards. While I do not litter myself, I know that they see it as part of the gig.

[–]fuseboy 0 points1 point ago

I was wondering about that. That sucks. :(

[–]graedan22 0 points1 point ago

true..but I love a good toxic Indian holi anyway

[–]-StupendousMan- 0 points1 point ago

My people die over colors.

[–]romulus4444 105 points106 points ago

Looks like Nightcrawler was photograhed with a high-speed camera mid-teleport.

[–]Impr3ssion 29 points30 points ago

BAMF!

[–]Pinosio 2 points3 points ago

Thanks for that. It looks fantastic, but really unhealthy too :-).

[–]rohanshah1 0 points1 point ago

Now I miss India even more. I cannot wait till next holi! It really is the best thing every and really fun even with strangers!

[–]I_make_things 3 points4 points ago

These are beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing!

[–]tashbarg 4 points5 points ago

Thanks for not going crazy on the saturation slider.

[–]iphonephotog 2 points3 points ago

I don't think I touched the saturation slider on the majority of these, most of them I darkened, added some vignette to certain ones, killed a few high lights and burned the background on most.

[–]tashbarg 3 points4 points ago

And that's why they look realistic. Not like the one from OP.

[–]iphonephotog 1 point2 points ago

Thank you, I didn't want to over saturate it plus my magazine wouldn't have run them if I made them look fake. I prefer the realistic look to the fake colory look for most things, glad you approve :)

[–]jeanlucinurbutt 23 points24 points ago

[–]MozzarellaSquirrel 35 points36 points ago

What's the point of that bot up there if it does such a completely shit job?

[–]blackhawk465 3 points4 points ago

I really don't know. KarmaDecay even provides the formatting so all you have to do is copy and paste it.

[–]TheGoomba 8 points9 points ago

BUILT IN repost-shaming? That's god damned brilliant.

[–]oreopimp 0 points1 point ago

repost-shaming. Repost-Shaming everywhere.

Replying because baconreader sucks.

[–]jalopenohandjob 9 points10 points ago

It looks like Crayola started making hand grenades.

[–]LeZarathustra 26 points27 points ago

From the indian Holi festival. The pink colour wouldn't go away for a long time; even rubbing the skin with alcohol didn't help.

One guy I was hanging with got pink all over his scalp and crotch. Then he got a mild allergic reaction to it. Kind of sucked.

Otherwise a great festival. 10/10. Would go wild again.

[–]frugalfran 3 points4 points ago

No idea where this is from, but there is a series of national events collectively called The Color Run, in which contestants run a 5k while being pelted with this colorful dust (chalk?). It looks awesome, until you remember running requires inhaling...

[–]jasontimmur 3 points4 points ago

My girlfriend is wanting to do this, she's under the impression it's colored cornstarch, probably less irritating to the lungs than chalk.

[–]lily1346 1 point2 points ago

I think they only get pelted with dust at the end of the race, not like the entire time they're running. It sticks better cuz you're usually pretty sweaty after a 5k. Also, it's colored cornstarch. I think a faceful of chalk would be a bad plan, haha.

[–]synt4x 3 points4 points ago

I ran the one in SF, and they had 3 stations along the 5k route where they had groups setup with the color powder in squirt bottles. Each zone made a dust cloud you could see in the distance. They gave all runners a pack of color that they encouraged you to save until the end. The powder was corn starch based.

[–]ari-mulagu 10 points11 points ago

I'm sure Indians aren't the only people that play with colours. This looks like a skate park.

[–]smmat 24 points25 points ago

Indians celebrate Holi wherever they are, whether in India, at a skate park abroad or in my home when my Indian wife surprises me with a nice faceful of coloured powder.

EDIT: They might also have skate parks in India

[–]orangepotion 0 points1 point ago

You are right, this is from a photoshoot at a skate park in Berlin.

[–]analweapon 4 points5 points ago

HOLI HEY!!

[–]WTFisBehindYou 0 points1 point ago

Awesome, thanks for the information. Originally I thought it might have been from a Color Run. (They're super fun by the way, I highly recommend anyone to take part if the have the chance! You can walk the entire thing if you want :) )

[–]ikomimksE 7 points8 points ago

Source: http://www.streetartutopia.com/?p=7724 It's more of as street art celebration on Holi than a festival. It took place in Berlin as well.

[–]complex_reduction 4 points5 points ago

I've seen a tonne of photos of this event. This roughly equates to my worst nightmare. Just imagine it all through your fucking eyes and caked to your skin and shit as you're sweating running around.

Fuck.

[–]spermfoot 0 points1 point ago

worth it.

[–]immekus 0 points1 point ago

Our university's Holi celebration was probably my fondest memory from last year.

[–]rwjehs 5 points6 points ago

It's an Indian holiday.

[–]jasontimmur 6 points7 points ago

YOU'RE AN INDIAN HOLIDAY

[–]chean 1 point2 points ago

The festival is called holi btw for those wondering.

The name holiday is quite fitting hehahue

[–]guley_raja 1 point2 points ago

Holi is a Hindu festival of color which is celebrated by Hindus in different countries. it is not accurate to just classify holi as an Indian festival.

[–]Hamthrax 4 points5 points ago

Reminds me of watching 'Idiot abroad'

[–]narddawg314 2 points3 points ago

Sweet! We're doing a Color Run tomorrow in St. Louis!!

[–]br1ff 2 points3 points ago

This is amazing! What are they using?

[–]jasontimmur 12 points13 points ago

a colorful lead/arsenic/polonium mixture.

Seriously, they usually use highly toxic shit.

[–]FartingBob 4 points5 points ago

Can you tell by the pixels?

There are many non-toxic ways of doing this, people in this thread mentioned cornstarch and food dye gives the same results without that cancery aftertaste.

[–]spermfoot 0 points1 point ago

Doesn't matter, Holi Hai

[–]megabetty 0 points1 point ago

Can someone photoshop this to make it look like a glitter explosion instead? I need to see that because of reasons.

[–]sericeousburden -1 points0 points ago

There are a couple different events that use this colored corn starch as a gimmick. They even have a 5k run in different cities around the US that uses the stuff, which terrifies my lungs.

[–]jpeace42 0 points1 point ago

How did they do that?

Why is Holi celebrated?

There was a mighty demon king named Hirnakashyipu who had won all the three worlds of heaven, earth and hell and had thus, become very proud. He assumed that he could defeat even Lord Vishnu with his valor. He went to the extent that he had enforced a law that everybody would worship him instead of gods and deities. However, his little son Prahlad refused to accept his commands and continued to worship Lord Vishnu with complete devotion. Infuriated by this defiance of his son, he ordered his soldiers to throw him down a hill. Praying fervently and having full faith in Lord Vishnu, Prahlad did not retract from his word. True to his faith, Lord Vishnu rescued him at the last moment.

Flustered by this news, Hirnakashyipu invoked the help of his sister Holika, who had a boon that she could walk through the fire unharmed to do away with his son. The wicked aunt agreed to the evil desires of his brother and entered the fire with her nephew Prahlad. However, the brother and sister had forgot that Holika could only enter the fire alone or she would perish. Thus, blessed by Lord Vishnu, the child Prahlad remained unharmed but Holika got burnt and died instantly. Holi is thus celebrated to commemorate the death of the evil aunt, after whom the festival is named, and the new life granted to Prahlad for his devotion and faith. To this day, cow dung is hurled into the fire and obscenities are shouted at the Holi fire at some places to insult Holika.
