He also has allowed them to eat burgers and listen to pop music. source

He is a great and glorious leader.

[–]GreedDisaster 149 points150 points ago

Allowing pop music could be a huge deal. Would be interesting to know what kind of music though and especially what kind of lyrics these popsongs will use.

They have like 0 experience considering pop culture as a way of expression for a whole generation. Will there be room for the developement of an identity of some sort or are they just singing their usual songs about their great leader paired with ancient keyboard sounds?

[–]fuzzycuffs 118 points119 points ago

North Korean pop music.

It will still be tightly controlled. You won't get SNSD or KARA in DPRK.

[–]I_Ruv_Kpop 87 points88 points ago

A life not worth living indeed.

[–]WeeBabySeamus 44 points45 points ago

No GEE? Outrageous

[–]Clbull 26 points27 points ago

I thought they'd allow K-pop of all things.

[–]somedelightfulmoron 53 points54 points ago

Definitely no Hyuna, Big Bang, Super Junior or Psy ("Oppan Pyongyang Style?").

[–]devotion303 80 points81 points ago

look, look,...hey guys... I can name some K-Pop groups too...

[–]DerpyWhale 15 points16 points ago

I can't. I didn't even know that we were talking about this.

Seriously though, the video in that source linked above made me want to punch myself in the face till I couldn't hear that redundant non-contributing zero of a bitch news-caster.

It was our great leader Kim Jong-Un that whrote the song and dircted the video

[–]d3ftw 54 points55 points ago

Opp, opp, opp, opp, opp gangnam style!

[–]itsmusicbeach 180 points181 points ago

Seriously though, what's the general consensus on this guy? Is he better? Worse?

More importantly, will Matt and Trey have him sing a tune in a new puppet movie?

[–]phlogistontheory 265 points266 points ago

He hasn't done anything evil yet. The jury is still out.

[–]somedelightfulmoron 61 points62 points ago

The world awaits his actions regarding NK's nuclear missiles though.

[–]TheDesktopNinja 56 points57 points ago

Like this one?

[–]Arcadefirefly 62 points63 points ago

SUCCESS!

[–]snatchinyopeopleup 40 points41 points ago

As you can see, the missile has exploded into approximately 6 mini-missiles all carrying 3500lbs of explosives and bearing the Dear Leader's likeness at the core of each explosive. Death the capitalist pigs.

[–]plastic_humvee 17 points18 points ago

I honestly thought I was looking at the Challenger explosion for a moment there.

[–]exitpursuedbybear 166 points167 points ago

Except murder 5 dozen generals and maintain his father's massive gulags and try toblackmail theworld with new missile tests, but otherwise, cool dude.

[–]masterofstuff328 200 points201 points ago

How can you stay mad at that face?

[–]zenmunster 5 points6 points ago

Awwww I wish I was home. I would have photoshopped some nice puppy dog eyes on the little one and made him do the puss in boots, cutesy face.

There's a good doggy.

[–]ChemicalRascal 120 points121 points ago

He killed. 60. Generals?

How do they even have any generals left?

Also [citation required]?

[–]MechaToast 98 points99 points ago

I think you underestimate how bloated the Korean People's Army is.

[–]MadeWithRealApes 7 points8 points ago

Almost as bloated as their leader! heyoo

[–]fuzzyperson98 30 points31 points ago

Just seems like your average succession crisis to me, but I've probably been playing too much CK2...

[–]redpenquin 16 points17 points ago

You can never play too much CK2.

[–]epmca 9 points10 points ago

As far as I understand he's purging old generation hard-line generals. As well, he has been actively been including younger, reform minded economist and technocrats into his inner circle. If he does have any intention of pursuing economic reform, it will probably be the military old guard that stands in his way.

Of course I could be reading way too much into this.

Best Korea is best, American pig scum!

[–]ChemicalRascal 6 points7 points ago

Australian pig scum, thank you very much.

'Stralya, cunts.

[–]monstercablessuck 6 points7 points ago

There is really only one general at a time. Whenever he kills that general, the colonel that was underneath that general gets promoted to general, who then also gets killed. It's a vicious cycle. On the plus side, North Korean soldiers make rank really fast.

[–]SpamFilterHatesMe 32 points33 points ago

That's the usual.

That doesn't count.

Our great leader hasn't done anything evil... yet.

[–]swagcat 23 points24 points ago

Yeah he's really chill. Once you get to know him better you'll love him.

[–]jason_steakums 50 points51 points ago

Yeah he's really chill. Once you get to know him YOU BETTER LOVE HIM.

[–]morituri230 17 points18 points ago

I have no sympathy for the NK generals. They are just as complicit in the horrid state of affairs that is North Korea.

[–]hadees 8 points9 points ago

But women can now wear pants so let's call it a wash.

[–]sTiKyt 19 points20 points ago

Look at all the fucks i give about the generals he killed.

[–]nscale 37 points38 points ago

I think the initial signs are pretty good. Remember, as much as he is the leader, if he went too far too fast the military would toss him aside in short order. If he wants improved relations with the rest of the world he'll have to do it over time, and in a way that brings that leadership along with him.

Since he took over there's been very little saber rattling, he's losing up on a number of things like those referenced in this thread, and Japan and North Korea are resuming direct talks. I think Japan will be the trial run for direct talks with a lot of other folks.

There's a long way to go, and the military leadership is still a wild card, but I think there is reason for limited optimism.

[–]prmaster23 9 points10 points ago

I would like to believe he really wants to change the whole country and that his act so far has been a recommendation by top psychologist. I wouldn't want to know what that country would become if he drop a big information bomb in one day, they need years of slowly change to overcome all that brainwashing.

But in reality you never know, he may be bat shit crazy as his father.

[–]L-Duderino 4 points5 points ago

Can't wait for South Park's episode on this little change of heart by the dear leader.

[–]ElolvastamEzt 37 points38 points ago

Oh no. Pizza AND burgers? He'll go down in history as the leader who brought obesity and diabeetus to the glorious nation. STOP before those women's pants include elasticized waistbands!

[–]wesman212 68 points69 points ago

But he's still the only one who is allowed to eat cake. Maybe he's merely a great leader. Still got a ways to go on glorious.

[–]NorthKoreanSpy 116 points117 points ago

-_-

[–]MightyYetGentle 24 points25 points ago

This guy has his poker face on.

[–]Plyson 34 points35 points ago

Hes korean. Might just be his face. Hope this isnt a thatsthejoke.jpg

[–]wesman212 61 points62 points ago

You know it's true, bub.

Meanwhile, in 'Merica, I just ordered a slice of chocolate cheesecake via room service on a credit card whilst having sex with a doll I purchased on the Internet and received with expedited shipping.

I even tipped.

This is why we're the best country on Earth.

[–]Turnip_Blaster 28 points29 points ago

Why would you tip your sexdoll?

[–]wesman212 58 points59 points ago

I tipped the cheesecake man.

The doll was plenty satisfied.

[–]NorthKoreanSpy 51 points52 points ago

-_-

You may keep these silly, devilish western curiosities of yours. I am provided all I need by the glorious DPRK.

[–]sometimesijustdont 21 points22 points ago

Glorious leader has tested vigorously and approved for all! Happy Happy Joy Joy!

[–]lantern55 4 points5 points ago

this shit makes me so incredibly sad.

[–]Bigbuddhabelly 4 points5 points ago

Lets hope he keeps the momentum going. Considering he went to school in the west maybe something clicked in his head that we don't suck as much as his father claimed.

[–]ILL_Show_Myself_Out 1118 points1119 points ago

I really hope that kim Jong-Un eventually strays from the policies that made North Korea what it is today.

[–]edwartica 804 points805 points ago

I think he will, slowly. The thing is though, there's a lot of old guard left that don't want to see this happen, so he's kind of got to let that generation die out before any real reform can happen.

[–]arbitration_man 895 points896 points ago

Exactly, I was surprised when people were let down when he said he would maintain all the old policies first thing. Of course he has to say that right away, but already there are signs of major change.

He has a wife he is seen with in public, he smiles and looks cheery, he went to a pop concert with western music. And after he successfully removed two powerful generals, there is talk of economic and agricultural reforms in the works.

There must be other powerful inner circle folks who see the success of Myanmar with their reforms and their society not imploding so they may be warming up to the idea of it.

Everyday it seems to me that around 2020 will be a time period where things in the world start to really take off and we have another period of huge global prosperity, on multiple fronts.

[–]kahmikaiser 349 points350 points ago

I would love to see this happen. :)

[–]EverAskWhy 200 points201 points ago

If you go from 8/100 to 12/100 it is a 50% increase. These changes may seem small, but I think it is a huge step in the right direction.

[–]Tripleshadow 39 points40 points ago

Measuring it with numbers is confusing and inaccurate, but progress is progress

[–]droth581 16 points17 points ago

Absolutely. As for me, I always measure in dicks. A slightly erect penis seems not to be much, but is a step in the right direction.

[–]bookelly 50 points51 points ago

Apparently he went to school in Zurich (too lazy to find it) and was a huge fan of basketball and video games. His roommate and friend who was the source for the story said he was a normal guy. Only much later in their friendship did he confide that he was, in fact, the son of the Dictator.

I think there is real hope here, but he can't change everything overnight. The culture shock would be...chaotic, to say the least.

Edit - school was in Bern

[–]sherlocktheholmes 229 points230 points ago

I so often feel the world is getting shittier; it's nice to read something well-reasoned and optimistic. Thanks.

[–]arbitration_man 178 points179 points ago

That makes sense, assuming you are a 20-something and of the same generation as myself.

See, we have been growing up as young adults in a crisis. But we need to keep in mind that history has shown these things are cyclical, and after every major crisis there is usually a time of rebuilding and prosperity.

By 2020, we will become the decision makers and leaders. We will have in our possession amazing technology where we can access literally all of human knowledge from any point on Earth. We will have a demonstration fusion experiment, we will be on our way to Mars with commerical companies, we will have made amazing discoveries with the LHC.

The future is going to keep getting more fucking amazing. Until we are very old though, then it will all start to unravel again, but no one will listen to use. Just like we didn't listen to them during this last crisis.

[–]howerrd 35 points36 points ago

We will have in our possession amazing technology where we can access literally all of human knowledge from any point on Earth.

So scholarly journals will stop requiring payment for access?

Edit: If we're taking a vote, I want this future.

[–]DigitalChocobo 6 points7 points ago

There was news recently about a pretty big journal wanting to make their papers free to access.

I can't for the life of me remember any other details at all about it, like which journal it was, or what obstacles are in the way.

[–]Skyblacker 44 points45 points ago

You read Generations too?

[–]arbitration_man 27 points28 points ago

Hahahaha, you got er!

I was going to link to the Wikipedia article soon.

I made this awhile ago trying to figure out my place in it:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IOfbCX9BQ1W8zrT56vXzCD_fEUwSwl0tc3JXfftebfI/edit

[–]Skyblacker 19 points20 points ago

As a Millenial, I've already figured out my place in it: Awesome. Post-secular-crisis middle-aged hubris, here I come!

[–]Pan324 2 points3 points ago

Pretty positive outlook, I wished I could share in it. We aren't at the end of the crisis, but at the beginning. Oil is running out and our economy is based on cheap oil, we have nothing that can conceivably replace it and we have to face that fact instead of wishing in make-believe magical technological advances. Wind power, solar power, hydrogen, ethanol and yes, even nuclear fusion are all useful and we will need them in the future, but they cannot replace oil, even if combined together.

People are too busy living in a world of magic and deceit, or willful ignorance. We dream that as things have been for 70 years, so will they be for the rest of time. I think the last 70 years of gluttony will soon extinguish. We only have 30 years of oil left at current rates of consumption, even when you consider the reserves we think we may have.

We will be the generation that is introduced to a new age, not of space age technology and ever improving technology, but rather of an age with a world that has become much bigger, small and locally scaled. We will have to face hard labor and work for our food once again, instead of buying it at a store we drive to, and eat food that was shipped across the world. We will have our cars but we won't be driving them everywhere, long distance travel will be restricted to trains and waterways because personal transportation will be too expensive to maintain over long distances.

It will be an interesting age because many aspects of the lives of our predecessors will return, and yet, we will still have technology. It will be an interesting fusion of the living conditions of the pre-atomic age with the post-atomic age.

We are in for some hard times ahead and we cannot and should not be satisfied with people who try to pull the wool over our eyes so they can make the biggest profit before it ends. The oil companies want us to believe in cheap oil and the abundance of it. Our politician's jobs are to convince us they can make things better and that things are getting better.

The truth is that they simply aren't going to get better, and sadly it isn't something we can control without changing everyone in the nation. The Occupy movement and the Arab Spring are probably just the early tremors for the challenges that lay ahead. Our conflicts in the middle East pale in comparison to what will happen as nations fight for resources they've depleted.

Our generation also believes in climate change, even while older generations don't. The simple fact is that even if the US alters itself drastically, it won't stop the change. If climate change is caused by man, we can't force the whole world to change enough to stop it. If it is not caused by man, there isn't a thing we can do to stop it. We will have to adapt just like our evolutionary ancestors did.

It isn't all doom and gloom. I take out a lot of hope from this. While things will be hard, at the end, things will be more humane. We will have each other and our communities and families will be stronger units because of it and because conditions will require us to band together instead of isolating ourselves in our homes, cars and cubicles. No it isn't doomsday and it isn't the apocalypse, it is simply a change that we will have to adapt to. We can't kick around nature and our evolution, we can't expect to sustain the unsustainable. But the change will ultimately set us free, truly free.

I look forward to the future because while I and others like me believe it's going to get worse, the other side of the valley is green and prosperous, just not the way we think of in our post-atomic frame of mind. We can also grow up knowing that our children will grow up and become adults and be able to live in a world without the handcuffs of our lives today.

[–]Tobislu 36 points37 points ago

If any drastic change happens within Un's lifetime, will North Koreans be able to handle the modern world? How slowly does change need to be implemented for them to be able to grasp today's society?

[–]morituri230 21 points22 points ago

Baby steps. The older generation will be wary, the younger will adapt far quicker. In a Generation or two they would be more like SK.

[–]Apex_Fail 6 points7 points ago

Exactly. Everyone thinks that the country is going to go insane if they are "reconnected" with the modern world. I keep trying to explain to people that the younger generations (under 30) will adapt much like the younger generations adapted to the computer age and internet. The older generations won't even bother with it or will struggle greatly but the 'kids' will take to it like it was second nature.

[–]cheechw 35 points36 points ago

Just look at how fast China changed after Mao died. Went through a major industrial revolution in the 80s and suddenly because a huge world economic power, and modernized 60 years in 20 years' time.

[–]antaryon 47 points48 points ago

Can't he just... execute the old guard?

[–]missmars12 43 points44 points ago

I can imagine that going down well with everyone.

[–]chissmith 156 points157 points ago

There was nearly a coup by the military when he took power. It's not like he's had a whole lot of control.

[–]SLINKDOWNTHEROAD 24 points25 points ago

source on that coup?

[–]symbolset 7 points8 points ago

One of many sources here. Or google "Ri Yong-ho killed" for more.

Edit: Link html -> reddit format

[–]chL41 20 points21 points ago

You have no source for that because there cannot possibly be one. It is nonetheless possible that you are right.

[–]liberalwhackjob 16 points17 points ago

There are sources in china that have contact with north korea... there seems to be one in particular that comes out with a lot of really good information... I think it is probably a woman.

I'm pretty sure it was this source that told us about the possible coup attempt during Ri Yong-ho's purging. It sounds like there was a firefight and some of his bodyguards/soldiers and possibly some of the NK army under orders from Kim Jong-Un died.... likely several people were executed afterward.

[–]edwartica 18 points19 points ago

Not without a military coup.

[–]sje46 22 points23 points ago

Essentially...no. They can just kill him and declare themselves "supreme leader". He's just one guy, and if the military disagrees with him, he's gone. This is how monarchies have always worked throughout history (note: North Korea is functionally a monarchy). If the guy on top is pissing off the old guard, he's dead. Look at Ancient Rome...the praetorian guard--the emperor's security detail--quite often killed the sitting emperor and named someone in his place if the emperor pissed them off enough.

It could be via poison in his cake, or an all-out civil war. But the Supreme Leader always has to appease the old guard. Because they have power too.

[–]lifeiswonderful1 5 points6 points ago

He already "relived" key generals in the past few months. That's how he gave himself the title of grand Marshall of the army. It was reported that the old general didn't go down easily and more than 30 soldiers died in the ensuing firefight. Others have taken "extended vacations" and died in "car accidents". Whether its him or his older sister who's married to another general that's pulling the strings is unknown. These PR displays do nothing for the people of north Korea and the atrocities committed against them. They are aimed at the western world who now think that North Koreans will just now get JC penny and dominos.

[–]NorthKoreanSpy 29 points30 points ago

But it's $5 so actually it's the best pizza.

At least that's how my mind works.

[–]fappolice 15 points16 points ago

Fuck you, I lived off of hot and ready's my junior year of college and I loved it!

[–]JayNic 6 points7 points ago

I'm eating Little Caesars Pizza as I type this. No regrets.

[–]FordSVT1 5 points6 points ago

Yeah but it's like $7 and it's ready immediately. I can't compare it to a pizza that costs 2-3 times as much with a straight face.

[–]orionsbelts 16 points17 points ago

Could be worst, could be pizza hut, or old Dominos

[–]kmoz 57 points58 points ago

considering he studied in switzerland and such, Id imagine hes a bit more lax than his dad. Who knows though.

[–]Thinkiknoweverything 24 points25 points ago

I was getting ready to post this same thing when I came across this post. I definately see a much kinder person in kim jon-un, almost like hes a regular person and his father was just a dark, evil anomaly. It wont happen all at once, im sure hes brainwashed by an entire countries ideals and cultures.

[–]readzalot1 40 points41 points ago

Or he saw through the whole culture, kept quiet about his ideas and is determined to gradually make changes. Optimist here.

That REALLY says a lot about Kim Jong il if those sentences are:

You can eat pizza.

[–]captainhaddock 71 points72 points ago

It very nearly was the other way around!

You can eat pants.

[–]coolnamenumbers 13 points14 points ago

I knew it was bad but... damn.

[–]LordAegeus 142 points143 points ago

People keep joking or acting like they aren't impressed, but I like Kim Jong-Un. He's taking baby steps to slowly reform his nation and open it up to the world. He knows that an overnight revolution will fuck up the state of the nation for decades yet again, so he's being smart about it and introducing small elements of western culture and saying, "See? This isn't so bad." I hope he continues like this and we see a much freer Korea when he is done with it.

[–]OsirisFox 19 points20 points ago

Thank you!!! A voice of reason! So far I like the guy as well. Wish people would give him a chance because he is in a very difficult situation, and so far I see him making the right reforms while keeping the nation as stable as NK could be. Little steps.

[–]Bodoblock 8 points9 points ago

But what reforms has he really implemented other than completely superficial ones? I, like all other Koreans, would love to see Korean reunification in our lifetimes. But every time we've gotten our hopes up with North Korea it was always shot down soon after. Don't forget that we had high hopes for Kim Jong Il too. And especially with the Sunshine policy we thought major change was going to be on the way. Didn't happen.

[–]AForeignMan 92 points93 points ago

But mom! Even North Korea gets to have pizza for dinner!

[–]bulaien 48 points49 points ago

I remember some story of a joint-venture factory between SK & NK, where the North Korean workers would be given moon pies during their lunch break. NK asked them to stop giving them moon pies because they might think everyone in South Korea has access to these glorious little treats.

[–]somedelightfulmoron 20 points21 points ago

But who would have the heart to deprive its citizens of moon pies? I love moon pies. I can't imagine a world without moon pies. We need to push change for NK! Who's with me?

[–]JavaMoose 18 points19 points ago

Let us airdrop Moon Pies on North Korea (Best Korea!).

[–]redmercuryvendor 272 points273 points ago

Note to TV owner: just because the contrast, sharpness and saturation sliders can go all the way up to 100, doesn't mean they should.

[–]I_TYPE_IN_ALL_CAPS 509 points510 points ago

FUCK OFF, I LIKE MY ASIANS PINK.

[–]Whatofitpunk[S] 89 points90 points ago

it's the TV at work and taken with a shitty camera phone

[–]SaltyBabe 49 points50 points ago

I imagine the down votes like this:

"Oh fuck no you didn't. This is your TV and you're lying to make it seem like you don't have a shitty TV!"

[–]collegeisascam 43 points44 points ago

He just married that pop star. She probably wanted to wear pants. He probably wanted the pizza.

[–]Spartacus891 15 points16 points ago

There's a TBS sitcom in here somewhere.

[–]Enviirted 7 points8 points ago

Actually didn't he marry her like 3 years ago and it's just now coming to light?

[–]cockhouse 102 points103 points ago

TIL people in North Korea couldn't eat pizza until then

[–]Mozartist 21 points22 points ago

Did you know kim jong Il got entire groups of people to dress up and dance for him? I kind of don't want to look up the video for how surreal and scary it is, but it is true.

[–]plainOldFool 52 points53 points ago

That dude kidnapped at least one international actor to make films for him. I kid you not. It was not just an episode of 30 Rock. He actually did that shit.

[–]GuitarWizard90 20 points21 points ago

Stop downvoting this guy. It's true. Google it.

[–]USMutantNinjaTurtles 10 points11 points ago

Fuck you. Google that shit for us.

[–]MetaRiddler 4 points5 points ago

If I my recollection is correct, I believe he kidnapped around 8 people annually. His personal chef was a kidnapped Japanese.

[–]Dr_Insanity 3 points4 points ago

What would you do if you were a supreme leader? Dance for your people?

[–]buckykat 72 points73 points ago

baby steps

[–]halfcentaurhalfhuman 38 points39 points ago

I think at this moment it should be considered crawling.

[–]jluteran 24 points25 points ago

What a glorious day for North Korea, and therefore the world...

[–]lillyjb 28 points29 points ago

He truly is devine. God giveth and god taketh away.

[–]EpiC-NOVA 35 points36 points ago

Careful now. You could get yourself banned from /r/pyongyang for trying to bring some Christian hoobajoop into a communist country.

[–]Thinkiknoweverything 16 points17 points ago

too late

[–]sentry07 23 points24 points ago

Well, Justin Bieber will have something to eat if he eventually completes his tour there. He'll be able to wear pants, too.

[–]giant_enemy_spycrab 4 points5 points ago

Whatever happened with that?

[–]twitinkie 8 points9 points ago

north koreans were always allowed to eat pizza.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTQK01VdB20

also, it was actually women's heels that have been allowed in NK recently.

.... and amusements parks fyi.

[–]Stardash 7 points8 points ago

I think that, even though he is a dictator that has inherited his power, he can change the country for the better, as long as he doesn't try to do it too fast, since his generals might not be as pleased if he does. Time will tell what will happen to that country and its citizens.

[–]JLHarvHarv 6 points7 points ago
