Definitely exceptions, but it's funny how much more you can comprehend once you realize that "but" really does often negate everything that went before. Like, "epiphany!" and all of a sudden passive aggressives lose one of their favorite tools. (btw, not saying the guy who started this conversation is passive aggressive, just that generally you hear a lot of that from them)
