I know it's just a cartoon, but this filled me with a lot of different emotions.

[–]PleaseDontStalkMe 928 points929 points ago

Fear of becoming Bart. Regret about not being as driven or talented as Lisa or Maggie. Sadness seeing Homer and Marge getting old and thinking of my parents. Happiness however because they seem to be enjoying their older years. In the end, loneliness.

[–]hkorner 159 points160 points ago

It's nice that Abe is still alive at the end. Unless they stuffed him or something.

[–]someguy945 146 points147 points ago

Grandpa Abe was cryogenically frozen, sort of like Fry in Futurama.

[–]charonill 56 points57 points ago

They put him in suspended animation. He comes out for holidays and family gatherings it seems.

[–]Bendrake 381 points382 points ago

Marge and Homer getting old just like my parents really hit me.

[–]CytoIt 54 points55 points ago

This timeline reminded me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KszfMWUmCCE

Updated: **May not be appropriate for /r/funny because this is not a funny video.

[–]Xervicx 17 points18 points ago

It is a very sad tale, but it ultimately ends in happiness, as the man spends his whole life worried about life and making mistakes, but in the end he realizes that even though time is running out, he is ready to accept that end, and cherishes the happiness that he had throughout his lifetime. It is a reminder that even though we may despise the hands of our clocks as they tick forward so ominously, and even though we may want to stop time from moving forward, we can still enjoy our time that we do have. How long do we have? Years? Days? Seconds? It matters not, what truly matters is finding that happiness in your life and appreciating every glorious second of it, taking in the beauty you find so that when you die, you can say that you have had very pleasant memories.

[–]DoucheAsaurus_ 9 points10 points ago

I'm totally going to cherish every second now...just one more page of reddit...

[–]Chexonfire 144 points145 points ago

r/sad?

[–]epoxy_proxy 348 points349 points ago

yes, i/sad.

[–]ALLCAPSUSERNAME 90 points91 points ago

u sad bro?

[–]4lien 7 points8 points ago

Hulk sad

[–]xaronax 87 points88 points ago

dat nigga sad.

[–]Nasir742 63 points64 points ago

I ain't even sad

[–]Stephen_W_Hawking 11 points12 points ago

Matt Groening is the master of pulling heart strings. Fry's dog seymour, Fry's brother and the clover, and even thinking about homer and marge getting old or bart being sad. I feel my throat get tight.

[–]GummyDeath 5 points6 points ago

Hit me because my parents never grew old together. Marge and Homer growing old together, doing things together and enjoying their remaining time together really brought a smile to my face :)

[–]Incompatibert 94 points95 points ago

Was bracing for Marge/Homer without the other followed by tears. Was relieved.

[–]360walkaway 93 points94 points ago

Especially when Bart turned into Homer. More motivation for me to not be a lazy dickhead.

[–]vteckickedin 25 points26 points ago

Oh, I don't think you're lazy.

[–]YourMasturbatingHand 35 points36 points ago

...so just a dickhead?

[–]360walkaway 3 points4 points ago

Sometimes.

[–]h989 60 points61 points ago

Talented as Lisa? She married Milhouse, she could have done better, but I love what you wrote, it really opened my mind.

[–]PleaseDontStalkMe 49 points50 points ago

She was the driven, but yea that was another emotion. I think she must even know that the way her life turns out is disappointing. That's a real fear we all have to face up to also.

[–]bluegloryhunter 61 points62 points ago

I thought it was telling that the "pre-wedding" photo she is one of the few people who is NOT smiling. It seems like she is really unsure of the choice but seems to enjoy her life after that.

[–]AddressesYouByName 42 points43 points ago

Yeah, but think about how Marge settled with Homer. She could have done 'better' but her message is about how love = happiness. In my mind the future Lisa is happily content with Millhouse.

[–]sammythemc 42 points43 points ago

Future Millhouse might not even be a dork. Being a dork at 10 doesn't mean you're doomed to be one the rest of your life (at least I hope not)

[–]FNGPete 28 points29 points ago

He may not be a dork anymore, but he still isn't a meme.

[–]starbuxed 13 points14 points ago

Milhouse is gay. I we all know this.

[–]Whit3y 21 points22 points ago

NOBODY LIKES MILHOUSE!

[–]xaronax 12 points13 points ago

Lesbians can't hit the snooze on your biological clock.

[–]Sugar_Skull 1 point2 points ago

I sort of did not like that whoever did this made her lesbianism a "phase." She comes out in college only to change her mind and marry Milhouse? That sucks.

[–]Va1entine 5 points6 points ago

wow, shit man.

[–]trevercj 145 points146 points ago

I was halfway expecting to see homer sitting by himself at some point. Would have made me cry.

[–]DontHassleMeImLocal 73 points74 points ago

the fact that homer is portrayed as being happy in every picture despite the changes happening around him gave me a real warm and fuzzy feeling.

[–]forkandspoon2011 139 points140 points ago

Homer by himself would of made anyone lose it...

[–]Beersquid21 60 points61 points ago

Seriously, that just made me tear up. Imagining the decades of episodes I laughed at during most of my life ending with Homer all alone would crush me.

[–]Bendrake 33 points34 points ago

Good lord, I would have lost it.

[–]Megawatts19 11 points12 points ago

Damn, I'm crying just thinking about it.

[–]YESYESYESYESSSSS 4 points5 points ago

Fuck, I'm losing it now.

[–]toadwarrior 22 points23 points ago

He'll probably die first to be fair.

[–]a_modest_proposal 47 points48 points ago

If the Simpsons have taught me anything, it's that nothing can kill Homer.

[–]Hibno 7 points8 points ago

Ugh. That was difficult to read. Why did you have to do that to me, man? Now you need to tell me funny Simpson quotes.

[–]LemonFrosted 10 points11 points ago

Next you'll want real lead in the radiation shielding or scented cakes in the urinals!

[–]trevercj 2 points3 points ago

Duff man can't breath... OH NO! Here ya go. Make the pain go away.

[–]skunkbollocks 53 points54 points ago

Agreed. The Simpsons used to make up a big part of my life and at some point they fell away. I just recently have been thinking about how I need to get back into it again, then I came across this. It parallels a lot of things I've seen with people I know in my actual life, so it really did make me feel quite sad, but also a nostalgic happiness of "the good times". I guess that's what life is; bittersweet.

[–]RonRonner 34 points35 points ago

I was also a huge Simpsons fan who walked away when I was in high school in the early 2000s, I guess, pretty much when everyone (including myself) complained about how the show just wasn't the same anymore. I picked it up again in college and have been watching since. Trust me, you won't regret it. Yes, the show has changed since the really early seasons but the most recent seasons have had some solid writing and they've taken gone on some really beautiful artsy tangents. Check out "Yokel Chords" from season 18 for example and note the Edward Gorey-inspired animation and really haunting melody motif that they thread throughout the episode. They're still taking risks and it's paying off.

There's something that just gives me the warm fuzzies to listen to and follow these characters that have been with me pretty much my whole life. I remember watching it around the 3rd season or so and just being instantly hooked. I think sometimes we collectively take this show for granted and while it doesn't always live up to its past brilliance, 23 seasons is a huge accomplishment and compared to most any other scripted comedy on TV right now, it's just top of the line.

[–]bitteralex 112 points113 points ago

I felt pretty sad when Lisa married Milhouse. It made me sad to see her settle.

[–]phliuy 153 points154 points ago

sometimes, everything comes up milhouse

[–]Kylskap 12 points13 points ago

"The 'House always wins!"

[–]Bendrake 28 points29 points ago

Ouch, I was thinking the same thing.

Mildly happy for Milhouse, sad for Lisa.

[–]AsskickMcGee 44 points45 points ago

Such a dork, but has there ever been any indication that Milhouse is a bad guy? Is he dishonest? Does he toy with people? Is he greedy or lazy? Of all the child characters, his seems most likely to grow to be a balanced, not-crazy adult.

[–]techdawg667 19 points20 points ago

Agreed. Milhouse would have been the best husband for Lisa out of all of the Simpsons cast.

[–]metalcoremeatwad 1 point2 points ago

Surprised i didn't see a lisa and nelson stage since they did have a thing.

[–]chroipahtz 2 points3 points ago

Milhouse is generally a good guy. But he's just so... Milhouse.

[–]kc7wbq 9 points10 points ago

But not until after some experimenting...

[–]skyloftknight 1 point2 points ago

Same. I'm still hoping Colin from the movie will make another appearance. I liked that kid.

[–]dethkarz 28 points29 points ago

True, I found it more sad than funny.

[–]ashabanapal 5 points6 points ago

I was filled with disappointment that we didn't get to see Bart's Inevitable Parade of Skanks®. I guess they weren't the type to invite over to the parents' place for the holidays.

[–]syphilitic 1 point2 points ago

I didn't like seeing Bart turn into such a loser. I don't think he deserved that at all.

[–]Five_bucks 557 points558 points ago

I feel like I just lived 30 years in two minutes.

This didn't make me funny. I didn't funny at all!

[–]RuchW 25 points26 points ago

Some of the frames were funny (the one where Lisa seems to have two lesbian lovers). Some just made me smile (the one where they're all together and Lisa is pregnant with Milhouse's baby).

[–]Five_bucks 13 points14 points ago

I was too busy lamenting my dwindling youth.

I'm going to go play some ultimate frisbee!

[–]hot_skillet 91 points92 points ago

i funnied ALL OVER THE PLACE

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points ago

I think I stepped in some

[–]bearvivant 91 points92 points ago

I was kinda expecting Homer and Marge to die off. I was ready to start crying.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]xaronax 31 points32 points ago

Applied Cryogenics, bitch.

[–]melatoninkickingin 75 points76 points ago

Where did this come from? Just outta curiosity...

[–]karl-marks 96 points97 points ago

The end of an episode from last season. Pretty sure it was the christmas episode.

[–]Jabourasaurus 59 points60 points ago

I remember reading once that it was originally written as the maybe-series-finale, after that whole ordeal where they almost didn't come back for another season last year. It was just on a random website and not cited, but I still thought it would have made a nice touching end to the series.

It also fills me with a huge sadness to know that the show will end soon, despite the fact that I haven't watched in seasons.

[–]LeonardNemoysHead 5 points6 points ago

So it isn't canon or anything, just like the episode where they're in the future. The one with the "Well, we saved your asses in World War 3" joke.

[–]Deddan 10 points11 points ago

Fun fact: that episode, Lisa's Wedding, was set in the future - 2010.

[–]CaitlinSarah87 2 points3 points ago

That flash forward was 2010. Haha :)

[–]Instantcretin 21 points22 points ago

500th episode iirc.

[–]mkwoa 7 points8 points ago

Can't remember the name, but it was last season's Christmas episode. Instant classic; easily a top 25 best episode. Had the touching sentiment of the great episode (Lisa and Bart in the treehouse), good humor, and easily the funniest Ralph scene ever.

[–]shaggietv4 507 points508 points ago

just realized Bart is wearing fry's clothes

[–]mcreeves 86 points87 points ago

...holy shit

[–]Quispiam_ 41 points42 points ago

YES, something about his clothing was bugging me A LOT, thank you for solving that.

[–]chefmcduck 30 points31 points ago

Similar. Fry wears a red jacket, whereas Bart is wearing a red/orange shirt. Good eye though, might be an ode by the artist.

[–]law18 28 points29 points ago

Well, considering both series were created by the same person...

[–]glenbolake 9 points10 points ago

Fry's outfit was modeled after James Dean as he appeared on the poster for Rebel Without a Cause. I doubt the same can be said for Bart.

[–]ajniedo 20 points21 points ago

Yeah as a bigger fan of Futurama than The Simpsons, those are definitely not Fry's clothes. Similar, yes. But not the same. They're just grown up versions of what he normally wears. Orange shirt/blue pants.

[–]elbenji 6 points7 points ago

Which is a reference to Marty McFly

[–]AddressesYouByName 37 points38 points ago

Which is a reference to Rebel Without a Cause

FTFY

[–]facelessdick 3 points4 points ago

[–]mushroomwig 239 points240 points ago

Lisa is bisexual? Why am I not surprised?

[–]walterqxy 285 points286 points ago

There's a time and a place for everything, children, and that place is college.

[–]Phaint 64 points65 points ago

[–]coorbs 12 points13 points ago

[–]Tiktaky 120 points121 points ago

Polyamorous too by the looks of it.

[–]xaronax 38 points39 points ago

Eatin' ain't cheatin'.

[–]snowlion13 21 points22 points ago

you notice it only through her college days

[–]gerusz 21 points22 points ago

Lesbian-until-graduation is the proper term, I guess.

[–]Mr_Subtlety 129 points130 points ago

Ah man, she married Milhouse? She should have stuck with the ployamorous lesbians.

[–][deleted] 61 points62 points ago

Millhouse "so honey, when you gonna invite your...uh....good friends from college over again?"

[–]JonathanTaterTotmas 25 points26 points ago

She could have married Ralph or Nelson.

[–]thradakor 26 points27 points ago

Better Millhouse then.

[–]MbMn91 23 points24 points ago

Nobody wants Milhouse. Not even Milhouse wants Milhouse.

[–]LeonardNemoysHead 24 points25 points ago

Or any of the parade of posh boys she's been involved with. I liked the British guy from the previous look-into-the-future episode.

[–]williemcbride 15 points16 points ago

"We saved your ass in World War 2!"

"Well we saved your ass in World War 3!"

[–]romanpppp 42 points43 points ago

[–]sk_starscream 114 points115 points ago

How the fuck is grandpa Simpson still alive?

[–]LtlAnalDwlngButtMnky 42 points43 points ago

It's the future. They brought him back.

[–]Blu3j4y 54 points55 points ago

I'm surprised he wasn't brought back as a head in a jar.

EDIT: Grammar failure I = I'm.

[–]5ft11flip 391 points392 points ago

Obamacare

[–]eversin 7 points8 points ago

He was frozen in the episode and they thawed him at the end

[–]YoungSpeezy 119 points120 points ago

On a scale of one to the ending of Jurassic Bark of Futurama this is close to a 10.

[–]powersurge360 49 points50 points ago

Wait, how many numbers are in this scale before we start getting to words?

[–]YoungSpeezy 86 points87 points ago

Jurassic Bark is a 10. I apologize for not being clear.

[–]r0b0t1c1st 13 points14 points ago

Maybe it's a gradual transition. We need to represent as a scale that makes sense - from 0 to 1. Perhaps:

Normalized YoungSpeezy's
0 1
0.5 1/2 + jbf/2
1 jbf

Or even

Normalized YoungSpeezy's
0 1
0.5 sqrt(jbf)
1 jbf

For conciseness, jbf = "Jurassic Bark of Futurama"

</math>

[–]LZPWN 45 points46 points ago

Love the fry-ish clothes Bart acquired.

[–]LeonardNemoysHead 15 points16 points ago

The one where they're kicking him out and he looks exactly like Homer. Oh god, the Jedis are gonna feel this one.

[–]TheSchmutte 21 points22 points ago

Is it just me or does Homer and Marge hardly age the entire time?

[–]tuscy 8 points9 points ago

look at grandpa at the last pic

[–]tule123 41 points42 points ago

I was about to cry if they had the last photo of just Bart, Lisa and Maggie sitting on the couch. Oh, jezzuuss, that would of made me cry shed a tear or two.

[–]YadaYadaSex 18 points19 points ago

Did anyone else scroll through while ignoring Maggie because you expected her to remain an infant?

[–]Elv3n 18 points19 points ago

Morphistic quiznox!

[–]jekyl42 71 points72 points ago

WTF why is this shit making me so sad? I wouldn't even get this emotional looking at photos like this from my own damn family.

[–]Russz 89 points90 points ago

The Simpsons family is everyone's family.

[–]fswmacguy 13 points14 points ago

[–]Deergoose 48 points49 points ago

Because you realize that life is incredibly short and not too far in the future you will be looking at your own photos and see just how quickly it all went by.

[–]Beersquid21 21 points22 points ago

I know that this is true, but I don't feel happy hearing it.

[–]eff_bawmb 2 points3 points ago

Makes me sad too for some reason.

[–]Juicy_Fart 116 points117 points ago

Never got into the simpsons. I know it's practically a sin. But all of a sudden i see maggie growing up. Didn't notice for quite a few frames. Caught me way the fuck off-guard.

[–]Shadopoig 38 points39 points ago

You know, I'm wondering if that was the point. She seems so bored in the first half of these pictures, probably due to lack of attention and entertainment. And then maybe she picks up guitar in order to gain some of that attention, ending up rich and famous.

[–]Lineage_tw 9 points10 points ago

I thought it was to represent her entering the teenage ennui years.

[–]mortaine 20 points21 points ago

No, it's because she's the VOICE of a generation. Because Maggie only speaks once, ever, but the running gag is that when she's older, she never shuts up....

[–]Brocktoon_in_a_jar 52 points53 points ago

Yeah I forgot about Maggie until she had the guitar too. PS - I used to photoshop the Juicy Fruit logo to say "Juicy Fart" and then make stickers out of it.

[–]hot_skillet 45 points46 points ago

back into your jar, brocktoon

[–]HostaMahogey 5 points6 points ago

I want to see this logo.

[–]Brocktoon_in_a_jar 5 points6 points ago

It's pretty easy to make your own but I'll get on it. I want to see it on street signs all across America if I put in all the effort though.

[–]imnotmarvin 47 points48 points ago

Maggie-The voice of her generation. - I see what you did there.

[–]Phoequinox 2 points3 points ago

Easily my favorite part. None of us will ever live to hear it.

[–]BassNector 13 points14 points ago

The Simpsons depresses me... they have never grown up... and yet we will all die. :(

[–]Beersquid21 4 points5 points ago

Don't be sad, just shambhala.

[–]MrBrawn 24 points25 points ago

Suxh a great episode, they should have ended it there.

[–]eggyolkeo 22 points23 points ago

They were having contract disputes this past year, and they actually made this episode with the intention of it being the last one if they could not get the show renewed.

IMO, it wouldn't have been a terrible ending, but when they do actually have a last episode I hope it is really something special. Maybe one last clip show, an hour long, going over every major event in the past 20+ years. There will be tears.

[–]threep03k64 17 points18 points ago

A clip show wouldn't do the series justice. Honestly though you've made me realise that though I haven't been a big fan of The Simpsons for quite some years now there's not a chance I would miss the finale of it.

Tears would be shed.

[–]Armakham 6 points7 points ago

Kind of like that uncle whose jokes stopped being funny for you around age 9, who wants to see you now that he's days from kickin' the bucket. I know that feel.

You should visit your relatives from time to time.

[–]Cruisin_Fart 6 points7 points ago

Which episode is this. I can't remember ever seeing this.

[–]pizza95 7 points8 points ago

The end of an episode from last season. Pretty sure it was the christmas episode.

[–]opusinwub 8 points9 points ago

I love how Maggie becomes the "voice of her generation." Priceless. Thank you.

[–]penasaur 7 points8 points ago

Did anyone else notice the picture behind the couch change?

[–]GrotesDZs 2 points3 points ago

Yes. Also the couch when Lisa got married, and again when bart left, and again when they returned from vacation... Also the pets died off super quick.

[–]alwayssunnyinLA 8 points9 points ago

Pretty sure that Hawaiian shirt Bart wears is from the episode where they flash forward to Lisa as President.

[–]aVerySpecialSVU 2 points3 points ago

"Legalize what?....ooohhh"

[–]TheMemeGirl 7 points8 points ago

I'd hate to see Lisa end up with Milhouse

[–]ernymac 9 points10 points ago

I thought Bart was suppose to become Chief Justice of the Supreme Court?

[–]Stone_Swan 6 points7 points ago

Same. Glad someone else remembers. This version is quite depressing.

[–]tehcoon 8 points9 points ago

I like the global warming joke imbedded in the pictures. In one picture, they are scuba diving in New York, then the next they are on camels on the south pole, which has turned into a desert.

[–]choiceselects 9 points10 points ago

Hey if you guys are wondering what episode this is, it's Season 23 Episode 9 "Holidays of Future Passed" The 495th episode. Hope that helps

[–]figglyy 6 points7 points ago

wow I feel like shedding a tear

[–]basegate 7 points8 points ago

Homer certainly ages well.

[–]Beersquid21 8 points9 points ago

I have been strictly following his diet for years due to this.

[–]Sqube 14 points15 points ago

That was almost disproportionately poignant. Reminded me how The Simpsons is such an inextricable part of my childhood.

I'm only 28 what are these feelings

[–]lucS4C 25 points26 points ago

I kind of want to make a joke about Bart being a redditor, but I fear the onslaught of downvotes.

[–]I_TYPE_IN_ALL_CAPS 54 points55 points ago

CAN'T BE. HE'S NOT SUFFICIENTLY CONVINCED OF HIS OWN INTELLECTUAL SUPERIORITY. ALSO, HE PREFERS DOGS.

[–]Blu3j4y 22 points23 points ago

I have a dog and two cats. The dog is my best friend, and the cats.... They're just squatters that I feed.

[–]Cpcp800 5 points6 points ago

My favorite is when bart is a hacktivist The clips are from holidays from a future passed

[–]P_Android420 5 points6 points ago

is it bad that when i see the word timeline i think of the facebook layout now...

[–]judehoffman 10 points11 points ago

I just realized that the color around Homer's mouth is a beard.

[–]BigRedThePirate 4 points5 points ago

It's 5 o clock shadow.

[–]hkorner 4 points5 points ago

Seriously. How is that series going to end in any kind of satisfying way..

[–]Beersquid21 5 points6 points ago

To many people, including myself, this show has been with us most of our lives. Think of it as a family member that has grown old, yet you still vividly remember the awesome things that family member did for you throughout your life and all the hilarious things they did. Now, would you want to put that family member out to pasture, or would you want them to stay with you as long as possible, even though they aren't making sense anymore?

[–]de-inspired 10 points11 points ago

Its a little slow but I think it tells the story better.

[–]idderzz[S] 3 points4 points ago

There are a countless amount of scenes which have caused me to laugh hysterically. The writers are so incredibly witty and clever (or at least from about 1990 to 2005) so much unlike any cartoon, or any Television show for that matter.

How is Grandpa Simpson still alive at the end?

[–]magnificentshambles 3 points4 points ago

Observe the couch, painting, lamp and table as the years pass by.

Bart started looking more and more like Fry. White shirt, red jacket and jeans, with a lazy do-nothing attitude.

TIL the light area around Homer's mouth is a beard, not just some protrusion of the mouth.

[–]theedqueen 1 point2 points ago

For a couple of years, Homer was dressed like Flanders. Wonder if he broke into his closet?

[–]derpinita 2 points3 points ago

Pretty cute. But where's Bart's supreme court robes?

[–]robots_dont_say_ye 2 points3 points ago

i'll always be a simpsons fan at heart, but nowadays it all seems so forced. what gives?

I thought lisa would break up with milhouse during these pictures because in the wedding photo she isn't smiling. I didn't really get maggie being a rockstar because there was an episode where Bart lived with ralph wiggum and they were in a band of something? I am glad that Bart got married in the end and had kids, even if his marriage didn't work out. A really sad picture and a reminder that the clock is ticking.

[–]dirice87 2 points3 points ago

I really think Bart would end up successful in his own way. Dude is extremely clever at exploiting systems, just doesn't have the attention span for book learning. He also has a pretty strong moral compass when it comes down to it.

I wouldn't go as far to say he'd work as a cop or a fed, but he has a unique talent for mischief and imposing his will.

I'm glad we're allies with Rigel 7. Rigel 1-6 are a bunch of assholes.

[–]LostFollowing 1 point2 points ago

I thought Bart was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court? Eventually becoming Chief Justice.

[–]JesusCoaster 1 point2 points ago

I always had a feeling Lisa would grow up to be a dyke.

[–]R0N_SWANS0N 1 point2 points ago

How is grandpa simpson still alive in the last phoot???

[–]Poontastic 0 points1 point ago

They need to change the last picture....There is no fucking way that the grandpa would still be alive! Other than that, it was pretty interesting.

Bart is my favorite character, this is sad.
