So around 6 years ago I'm on holiday with my family in the US. We stopped to fill the car up in some little pokey town on the way from Vegas to the Grand Canyon.

I was walking around inside the shop trying to decide what to pick as a snack when I heard the attendant say, "so are y'all from England?"

By this point I had decided and began to walk over to the checkout. I hadn't really looked at this woman so I had no idea what she looked like, and without missing a beat I said, "Yeah we are. Can you tell because of our teeth?"

I looked up at my parents expecting some sort of snigger, but my Mum looked horrified and my Dad shot me a look that conveyed feelings of, "you're no son of mine". I didn't understand what's up, so I looked over at the attendent and she had, I shit you not, about 3 teeth in her entire mouth. I left very quickly.

[–]fabulouszombie 11 points12 points ago

Oh God, those moments when you want to make a joke about yourself and end up insulting others instead. There should be a word for this.

I made it german cuz germans have a lot of weird words that mean very specific things.

This word is not really german and our words aren't weird!

Our words are fabulous.

I once got called to the principals office for calling someone a chigger after we just had a lesson on insects. That was 3rd grade :\ I had no clue.

[–]ilikpankaks 3 points4 points ago

my favorite was: "are you from England?" in a thick Wales accent "No, I'm from Texas." AND THEY BELIEVED IT.

Unfortunately, it was not.

[–]Drunken_Economist -4 points-3 points ago

That's not unfortunate. You're way better-looking than that guy.

It was his twin brother.

[–]Portacath 0 points1 point ago

I had an alcoholic aunt that looked like that..

[–]literallyallah 11 points12 points ago

Yes, we hate that advert here in Britain too

[–]willh1991 6 points7 points ago

Hate seems a bit strong, i have literally never given this ad a second thought.

[–]Binerexis 0 points1 point ago

Next time you see makeup ads like this, it's always fun to look for things like lips being out of sync. I remember seeing one recently where a woman is pointing to her five zones of ageing or some bullshit and it blatantly wasn't her hand.

[–]pegbiter 57 points58 points ago

Wow, Americans sure are obsessed with teeth.

[–]OutInTheBlack 31 points32 points ago

Not all of us. I've got a gap you could drive a truck through. Don't mind one bit. Everything else is straight. Just those two front teeth decided they don't like each other.

[–]lesmax 33 points34 points ago

Same here. Perfectly lined up teeth, gigantic gap in the front two. People always ask me (in confusion) if I've had braces.

BITCH DO YOU THINK THEY WOULD LEAVE THIS BEHIND?

I feel like people don't take me seriously because of the gap. I think it looks comical.

[–]len0re 4 points5 points ago

People are just jealous of our pro water squirting abilities.

[–]EverythingIsMediocre 2 points3 points ago

I have the same mentality. I feel it makes me look younger than I am and unprofessional. Oh well...

[–]son_of_a_gunderson 2 points3 points ago

I have straight teeth with a gap and I did have braces.

I just didn't wear the fucking retainer >_<

[–]henfruit 2 points3 points ago

Like my orthodontist used to say... "WEAR YOUR FUCKING RETAINER!"

[–]Jonny_Watts 2 points3 points ago

FAGGOT ASS LAZY KID YOUR PARENTS PAY FOR THIS SHIT

[–]blake_n 1 point2 points ago

I had a gap that was developing when my adult front teeth came in. The little strand of gum that runs between the two teeth was like...bigger than normal or something. I was young when I got the procedure done so I don't remember exactly what it was. I went in, got the oversized gum thing snipped, and my teeth grew back together. The procedure went something like that, dunno for sure.

I doubt all teeth gaps are a result of this, and it might be a procedure that only works when the mouth is still growing, but it's worth a visit to the orthodontist if you dislike it. Of course there's nothing wrong with a gap, I was too young to care either way when I got it done.

[–]Takafayse 1 point2 points ago

I had braces plus this same procedure done. But the second my wisdom teeth were removed my gap came back.

But I love my gap! :)

[–]blake_n 1 point2 points ago

Well, good on you, then. A gap's nothing to fret about.

[–]Tiktaky 1 point2 points ago

I had 8 years of orthadontics work to fix an overbite that forced me to eat mush and be rip-fed.

As soon as I could eats solids I gave up on my orthadontics even though fixing my buck teeth would only be a few more months and free.

I don't want my teeth to be perfect, They are functional and health, and they encourage people to crop me out of photo's before uploading them.

[–]Farts_Smell 4 points5 points ago

Dude. Humans are shallow fucks. This thread has utterly depressed me.

[–]pegbiter 2 points3 points ago

I think perfectly straight, perfectly white teeth are just fucking weird. Sure, they look like 'Hollywood' teeth, but they don't look like the teeth of actual real people.

Of course it's important to have functioning, healthy teeth - but slightly skewed or wonky teeth just give your face character.

[–]helga-pataki 1 point2 points ago

I used to worry that people wouldn't hire me because of my gap--like they'd judge based on my smile, ya know.

Then I thought, do I really want to work for a company that's going to base my work ethic and abilities on a physical feature that I can't control? And I got over it xD

What irks me now are the people who claim I don't care about my oral hygiene because I have a gap between my teeth. Come on now!

[–]lesmax 0 points1 point ago

I am such a nut about my oral hygiene!! My dentist loves me because I'm so quick with my checkups. I brush, floss, and rinse. My teeth are in fantastic condition. :D

[–]Jonny_Watts 0 points1 point ago

I keep my mouth shut. People who don't know me well don't notice. Even when I talk I just have a habit of not flaunting my middle chompers.

[–]keithzz 4 points5 points ago

That's cause you're Michael fucking Strahan

[–]Jonny_Watts 4 points5 points ago

THUBWAY

[–]Quatroking 0 points1 point ago

my front teeth stick out a bit but fuck dentures, as long as I can eat properly I don't give a fuck.

[–]iceicecat 3 points4 points ago

My teeth resemble the way a horse's teeth might look in a cartoon, you know pushed forward a ridiculous amount, which makes me have an overbite. I asked my mom about braces with rubber band things to fix the overbite, my mom said that I don't need braces -_-

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]len0re 0 points1 point ago

I have a gap in my front teeth. My brother got to have braces when he was young, and he teeth weren't as bad as mine. I asked my mom if I could have braces and she said I didn't need them. So my teeth are still fucked, but I've learned to accept it.

As I got older, I started to become more and more near sighted. I told my mom I needed glasses, and she didn't believe me that my eye sight was failing me. Like as if she can see what I'm seeing.

[–]iceicecat 0 points1 point ago

Oh wow, I feel extremely rude for complaining about my problems. I really hope the best for you!

[–]len0re 1 point2 points ago

Now imagine living in America and having all perfectly fine teeth, but with a slight gap in the front 2 teeth. You wont hear the end of it.

[–]Jonny_Watts 0 points1 point ago

Whenever I am sad about my teeth, I just remind myself that I am not Anthony Davis.

[–]Cannondale1986 6 points7 points ago

I don't really see the problem. It's one of the first things people see. I mean, if you had the ability to correct a lazy eye, wouldn't you want to do that too?

[–]pegbiter -1 points0 points ago

Perfectly straight, perfectly white teeth, just look weird. It's like plastic surgery - sure you may look 'good' in a very specific and conventional way, but you also look slightly less like a real person.

Sure, functional and healthy teeth are important, but slightly wonky, slightly crooked teeth? It just gives your face some character.

Whenever I see people that have unnaturally straight or unnaturally white teeth, all I can think about is the unnatural amount of time/effort/money they put into making their teeth like that.

[–]Cannondale1986 0 points1 point ago

That's not really what I'm talking about. I don't think there's anything wrong with either choice, personally, but I do find any kind of major gap in the top row of teeth very off-putting. Off-white, mildly crooked teeth do give you face character, but a gap tends to make you look unattractive from my point of view. I don't know what makes me feel this way.

[–]pegbiter 0 points1 point ago

Maybe if it were huge, but I would never really have noticed the 'gap' in OPs photo if it weren't pointed out.

[–]Cannondale1986 0 points1 point ago

It's the first thing I noticed when I saw the commercial. And someone in the room with me actually said "It's strange that they would choose a model with a gap like that for a close-up shot."

[–]Renovatio_ 2 points3 points ago

And Britis are obsessed with the queen.

[–]VedicCat 0 points1 point ago

The gap between the two front incisors was seen for a long time as a sign heightened sexuality. Basically, the lil gap means you're an awesome lay.

[–]excitementgang 0 points1 point ago

They don't have to be perfect, they just have to be well brushed and close enough together to aid in chewing. I know a lot of people find the gap cute, but it's a personal turn off. Here is another gap to mind.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points ago

She's Georgia May Jagger, Mick Jagger's daughter. I think they like the gap in the teeth because it suggests something sweet and innocent. Personally I don't really find her that attractive, but rarely find and catwalk/make-up models attractive and this one fuels the nightmarish levels of sociopathic obsession that Americans have with teeth. Then again I suppose it's only natural when your view of how teeth should be is walking around as though someone has smeared your mouth with correction fluid.

[–]Khuskan 22 points23 points ago

Alternatively they like the gap because she's the daughter of Mick Jagger, and therefore was born with a silver spoon in her mouth.

Between her teeth.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

That is also a very credible theory

[–]MyOtherCarIsEpona 2 points3 points ago

Horizontally.

[–]Bainemo 1 point2 points ago

I like the gap because it reminds me of bugs bunny

That fucker's hilarious

[–]then_IS_NOT_than 1 point2 points ago

I think they like the gap in the teeth because it suggests something sweet and innocent.

Have you seen the adverts? That's really not the impression I get. The way she slurs it out of her mouth with that expressionless look on her face in her slapper accent, it sounds more like she's offering a 50p blowjob so she can buy some more meth. Gross.

Too mean? Perhaps...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

No I think you're probably right there, they've gone for the meth-head look. Her head is probably clogged up with cocaine and amphetamines most of the time anyway so it's not far off.

[–]wrongrrabbit 19 points20 points ago

Great, something else to continue the outdated stereotype that Brits have bad teeth.

MY TEETH ARE FINE, BLAAAAARHG.

[–]TheDudeaBides96 19 points20 points ago

Ooh, somebody's complaining about stereotypes.....

[–]literallyallah 6 points7 points ago

I'm British, yet her teeth really annoy me whenever I see the advert

[–]mongo_lloyd 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, our teeth are so bad with all our free dental care...

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points ago

comment removed because you've all got the reddiquette of crack addicted lemmings.

[–]Binerexis 1 point2 points ago

a couple hundred dollars per year keeping your teeth clean is not a big deal.

Toothbrush and toothpaste shouldn't be that expensive, whoever you're buying from is ripping you off.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

You should be going to get your teeth cleaned at the dentist at least once a year.

[–]Scary_ 3 points4 points ago

The big difference is that the attitude in most of the world is just for healthy teeth. In America it's geared around healthy and perfect looking teeth. Orthodontics, braces and whitening are far more common there

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

It's the whitening that's unusual, but that's fairly demographic specific, and spreading around the world. Orthodontics, having your teeth straight, is important.

Good teeth sell you better, that's the ultimate fact.

[–]mongo_lloyd 0 points1 point ago

The English and Germans have the best dental health in the world. And it is free, it's on the NHS. In b4 durr nhs isn't free

[–]Torlen 4 points5 points ago

I don't know, I watch a lot of BBC and most of the women look like this. Gwen from Torchwood immediately jumps to mind.

[–]Donnypool 14 points15 points ago

Oh no, actors who look like normal people? Whatever next?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]moonjam 13 points14 points ago

"Normal people don't have gaps in their teeth in the US. "

"Lots of black people though, I don't know why"

ಠ_ಠ

[–]Rehehelly 4 points5 points ago

Most people here don't have gaps in their teeth either. Before you turn 18 I'm pretty sure dentistry is free on the NHS, I know a lot of people who had braces in school.

[–]wrongrrabbit 1 point2 points ago

well within my generation, dental care has been top notch, the only people I know with bad teeth are those with untreatable issues, damage that was repaired but not perfectly, and chronic smokers.

[–]Loidis 0 points1 point ago

Or poor people. Even with subsidised or free dental care, poor nutrition, drug abuse, a lack of education and just unhealthy, unhygienic conditions mean lots of poor people in this country have bad teeth. Just watch Jeremy Kyle :(

[–]wrongrrabbit 0 points1 point ago

valid point

[–]HoaryPlatypus 6 points7 points ago

I already have the London look. :( Had braces and everything, but it just came back.

[–]zephyy 8 points9 points ago

wear your retainer!

[–]HoaryPlatypus 0 points1 point ago

Well I did, but during that phase we couldn't afford the orthodontist any more. I didn't know how long I was supposed to wear them and when and then I eventually lost them.

[–]Adirael 1 point2 points ago

My sister was told to wear it forever (while sleeping) if she was able to.

[–]HoaryPlatypus 0 points1 point ago

My brother was told always for a year, then some length of time I don't remember at night and then he could stop. I did it always for a while, off and on at night for a bit then lost it.

[–]Adirael 0 points1 point ago

My SO is looking to get bracers anytime soon, I need to do some research. Do you had troubles after or before the retainer incident?

[–]Plaisantin 0 points1 point ago

It all depends on what work you need done, but your teeth are always shifting so unless you always wear your retainer your gonna lose some straightness. That being said, I got my braces off 8 years ago. I only wore a retainer for a year and then I lost it. My teeth are still straight.

[–]Weynard_Muldrake 0 points1 point ago

I was told that too, but after 10 years my retainer got all gross so I threw it away. Still good.

[–]bronymobile 7 points8 points ago

As a man with a gap, do women find it attractive?

[–]Skyline969 10 points11 points ago

Yeah ladies, can you barely contain your orgasms when you see this?

[–]jandemor 0 points1 point ago

Me too, went to the dentist about a month ago and asked him if the gap could be un-gapped, and he told me "Really? We are having people coming in and asking to have one done."

World has gone crazy.

[–]KizzyKid 40 points41 points ago

personally I think her gap tooth is cute

[–]Gozujohn2k 125 points126 points ago

personally I think her tooth gap isn't cute

[–]Jonny_Watts 3 points4 points ago

Nice try, Michael Strahan.

[–]notjawn 0 points1 point ago

And all the bucktoofed people go :(

[–]bolasaurus 2 points3 points ago

As a rather shy person with diastema, I found it quite encouraging to see this model on my tv. I usually hide my mouth when I smile, but I stopped for a while, thinking maybe I wasn't such a hideous beast after all. Then I saw this image on a friend's FB feed and now i'm back to hiding my mouth when I smile, eat and talk.

Fuck you society and your obsession with perfect teeth.

[–]then_IS_NOT_than 0 points1 point ago

I don't think you should necessarily take this as an insult, it's a joke. The advert encourages women to look like her, she has a massive gap in her teeth and someone made a joke about using a screwdriver to make themselves look like her. I'm sure plenty of people find the gap attractive; it certainly hasn't stopped anyone from being famous (Madonna etc.).

I don't find her attractive but, if it's any consolation, it has nothing to do with her teeth. I know it's a cliche and it's easier said than done but who cares what other people think; just be yourself and fuck the haters. That's been my philosophy and while I know not everyone can do it, I can certainly recommend at least trying it.

[–]donkey_on_the_moon 1 point2 points ago

Most of the people mocking the other peoples teeth don't take the time to realize that it's up to the parents to buy braces for their kids. I'm 22 and in college and I'm paying for my own braces and I'm completely broke. I have gaps between all my upper front teeth and it's completely out of my control so I don't understand how people can be such fucking assholes. People rarely make fun of me(to my face) but after seeing other people doing this shit I now know that people are most likely talking behind my back. So now I have to take a semester off, maybe an entire year just because I can't attend classes and act like a normal human being because I'm constantly thinking about my teeth and trying to hide them. People in class think I'm an asshole because I'm afraid of smiling.

Oh, I'm sorry society. I'm sorry that my dad deserted me, my mom, 5 brothers and 3 sisters. I'm sorry that my mom couldn't afford braces when I was a child. I'm sorry for polluting this perfect society that you live in with my horrible gaps between my teeth.

[–]ANAL_QUEEN 3 points4 points ago

I wouldn't talk, you would bang her like a truck.

[–]Pangael 2 points3 points ago

In Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' the Wife of Bath is described as being gap-toothed. It was a medieval sign of sexual prowess.

[–]jderm1 2 points3 points ago

[–]sje46 18 points19 points ago

...for a twelve year old. You see the problem with that, right?

Additionally, the stereotype didn't come from rotten out teeth. It comes from the fact that the US is much more concerned about straight teeth. This chart doesn't discuss the difference in crooked teeth.

[–]Scary_ 1 point2 points ago

Yes, straight teeth and white teeth.

[–]randallizer 9 points10 points ago

Facts don't work against stereotypes, silly.

[–]Bainemo 0 points1 point ago

The stereotype isn't about missing or rotting teeth in twelve year olds though

[–]TruthHurtsBrah -1 points0 points ago

Because those teeth magically get better for adulthood, right?

[–]bigolebastard -1 points0 points ago

You're interpreting that incorrectly. Brits don't go to the dentist so there are no records of the decaying teeth.

[–]GeebusNZ -1 points0 points ago

That makes me feel very uncomfortable.

[–]cannibalist 1 point2 points ago

are you from the past ?

[–]SlurmsMackenzie92 -1 points0 points ago

I like slightly crooked teeth myself, perhaps not the extent in the picture though

[–]bowhunter6274 -1 points0 points ago

Did anyone else notice the kid is black. He probably already has the "Strahan gap" going on.

[–]aidaw 0 points1 point ago

still made me laugh...

[–]ItsAFugazi 0 points1 point ago

The look on the lion's face fits pretty well

[–]macrovore 0 points1 point ago

That kid looks like Manny from Modern Family

[–]Flynner1992 0 points1 point ago

Another man did this before too a couple of months ago, a chubby man if i'm not mistaken.

What the hell is she doing with her lips and tongue? Like shes making a "derrrrr" noise. I dunno man.... I dunno...

[–]Aiyon 0 points1 point ago

My favourite Rimmel advert is that one, because the "Get the London Look" girl is behind bars!

[–]MadroxKran 0 points1 point ago

I was born with something in fashion.

[–]Frilaxo -2 points-1 points ago

Should have tried it AFTER fapping. Pain made it so hard to concentrate.

[–]TwistTurtle 0 points1 point ago

If I saw that walking down the streets of London, I'd instantly try to hire her.

[–]len0re 0 points1 point ago

Because everyone should be perfect just like the rest of us here on Reddit.

[–]Deharn -2 points-1 points ago

I got that gap too. I call it the clit rack!

[–]LoveSicKWAR -1 points0 points ago

oh... but when I uploaded this 2 months ago I got downvoted into oblivion. Cheers reddit

[–]skittles762 -2 points-1 points ago

Have another.
