Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Yes, it can. Although it's not surprising that life and energy follow patterns, remember that correlation =/= causation.

johnnyillogic

(sorry Johnny)

good point, but do you think that we can't draw anything at all from correlation?

[–]thedude37 0 points1 point ago

Depends on if there's evidence. One time during a trip, I looked at dried up ivy on a wall and realized the similarity between its structure and the structure of centipedes. It seemed like an underlying force was responsible for the similarities, but I just don't have evidence of anything beyond the idea that adaptation probably favors such a structure for both life forms.

I could give you 10 different pics of a brain cell, birth of a cell and eye that look nothing like the images on the right.

true but you don't think it's weird that everything in nature seems to take a spiral shape, from galaxies down to sea shells.

[–]AxlJones 0 points1 point ago

Not everything in nature takes a spiral shape; also, there are three kinds of Galaxies: Spiral, Elliptical, and Irregular.

ps: Not all sea shells take on a spiral pattern either.

One other point to consider:

Coincidences happen, especially when you have such a variety of processes/items to choose from. Two people chosen at random will most likely have different birthdays, but with 30 or more people the chance of two of them having the same birthday goes up considerably. It doesn't surprise me at all that the images appear similar, and neither does it surprise me when people attribute it to Providence, coincidence, or aliens.

Another thing you could add to the picture: the similarity between acne and volcanoes. Both can operate under similar principles:

  • They are often conical in appearance and shape.
  • A blockage near the mouth/pore opening is formed over time.
  • Pressure builds beneath the blockage, causing it to swell.
  • Eventually they explode.
  • Sometimes the resulting damage creates a caldera/pock mark.

Granted, zits aren't nearly as fascinating or attractive as cosmic nebulae, but it is food for thought. :)

Regular comment coming through.

Fractals is the explanation as far as I understand.

[–]saganhill 0 points1 point ago

You're coming to a conclusion first. It doesnt work that way.

[–]Babylon4All 0 points1 point ago

Actually it can, keep in mind those nebula look that way from our point of view, travel 90 degree around and they will look completely different.

Fucking magnets...

Some things look like some other things, particularly when false colors are used. Coincidence? You be the judge...
