I'm not even going to question why on earth this gif exists. I'm just happy it does exist.

[–]xlaxplaya 43 points44 points ago

The fuck?

[–]kevinpilgrim 1 point2 points ago

genius

[–]Chrischn89 28 points29 points ago

Native german here... I can't quite figure out what made this so funny for you guys but I'm glad our language entertains everybody :)

[–]Whirledpeas1129 19 points20 points ago

In America, people think those who speak German sound very serious and authoritative. Obviously, it's just a stereotype, but it made this cat meme really funny. I read it in a very serious German accent.

[–]HerpinDerpster 4 points5 points ago

Dutch (absurdist) comedian Hans Teeuwen once did a rather humorous piece, in German, about a captain of a ship, Günther Schneider, who took on Hans Teeuwen as a little boy, because his parent were in debt to him ("Geld interessiert mich nichts").

Because it is in German, it somehow makes it much more funny to me.

He starts of in Dutch, saying: "And one night... Günther Schneider entered my cabin, and said...". After that, hilarity ensues.

(Might be rather offensive for some, particularly SRS supporters)

[–]Ungefaehr 0 points1 point ago

i don't get it, what's the funny thing about it

[–]HerpinDerpster 2 points3 points ago

I don't think me, explaining to you what makes it funny for me, will make it any funnier for you, all of a sudden.

But to me it's imagining the absurdity of the situation, the over-the-top stereotypical portrayal of butch homo-eroticism on a boat of merely men with connotations of cheesy 70's style German (soft-)porn, along with the obscene taboo of the fact that the captain is alluding to all this to a little kid with a rather sleazy, filthy tone of voice.

Then there's the absurd turn of events when he starts to mention the A-Team out of the blue (with connotations of German voice-synchronization of series and movies, which is a rather humorous phenomenon to a lot of Dutch people), alluding to possible homo-erotic encounters because they're fugitives travelling in a blinded van. Then, to top it off, he mentions the fact that Face (because of earlier mentioned German voice-synchronization) would be called Gezicht in German.

Yeah, I found that pretty funny.

[–]Ungefaehr 0 points1 point ago

i still dont get it, for me he just tells some obscure monologue with a somewhat creepy voice. But thanks for the attempt to reveal your reception of the scene. :)

[–]RX_AssocResp 0 points1 point ago

It is pretty funny.

[–]RossTheColonel 2 points3 points ago

Ich weiß nicht auch, warum sie finden es witzig. Hahaha.

[–]bobi1 2 points3 points ago

*warum sie es witzig finden is the right structure.

[–]RossTheColonel 0 points1 point ago

Oh, thanks. I've only taken 3 years and structure is the bane of my existence.

[–]Madrawn 0 points1 point ago

Don't worry you do, like Yoda you sound.

[–]RossTheColonel 0 points1 point ago

[–]Pagan-za 0 points1 point ago

I speak afrikaans and I have no idea why I find that so hilarious.

[–]Bumblebree 72 points73 points ago

It's posts like this that make me realize how closely related German and English are.

[–]einsfurmich 132 points133 points ago

That is because English is a Germanic language.

"The most widely spoken Germanic languages are English and German, with approximately 300–400 million.. They belong to the West Germanic family. The West Germanic group also includes other major languages, such as Dutch with 23 million[4] and Afrikaans with over 6 million native speakers;.[5] The North Germanic languages include Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Icelandic, and Faroese, which have a combined total of about 20 million speakers"

[–]pavlovs_hotdog 34 points35 points ago

Your correct and very informative comment made me respect you. Your username made me adore you.

[–]einsfurmich 12 points13 points ago

Thank you kind stranger.

[–]rocketblitz 3 points4 points ago

Just asking, is your name a Rammstein reference? (From the song Zwitter.)

[–]einsfurmich 10 points11 points ago

A little from Zwitter but also one of my favourite movies ever Das Leben der Anderen with one of the best ending or near ending lines of the entire film is a play off of it. If you haven't seen it I recommend it.

[–]Paxientas 2 points3 points ago

I have to watch with subtitles and it is still one of my top 5 favourites. I would recommend it a million times.

[–]einsfurmich 0 points1 point ago

It is a fantastic film.

[–]mimine101 1 point2 points ago

I love that movie! Luckily the end line works in my language too, it is such a sweet ending.

[–]einsfurmich 0 points1 point ago

Glad you enjoy(ed) it as much as me.

[–]Basstissimo 0 points1 point ago

[–]bigbadfox 6 points7 points ago

Afrikaans? No shit? Learn somethin' every day.

[–]bassieeee 13 points14 points ago

Afrikaans is really close to Dutch, because the Dutch had colonies there :) (Afrikaans just means African in Dutch)

[–]revmuun 8 points9 points ago

Well, it's basically Dutch. But different.

[–]kabomlamma 6 points7 points ago

hierdie waatlemoen is van my
van my!!!

[–]aMillionLasers 15 points16 points ago

no offense, but being German I allways find Dutch sounds like retard-german. really, no offense.

[–]kabomlamma 7 points8 points ago

that's Afrikaans not Dutch.(probably badly translated from Dutch via google)

And being Dutch I have the privilege of having no idea how I sound like to speakers of other languages. so you could be right. I don't know.

[–]everflow 3 points4 points ago

I always read Dutch manuals, preparations, list of ingredients, whatever when it is printed on a product I buy. I am still having a hard time understanding it being spoken, but when I read Dutch, I get the feeling I understand every word. It is like a slightly simpler version of German with funny spelling.

[–]Pagan-za 1 point2 points ago

Afrikaans is commonly referred to as kitchen dutch.

Source: Ek praat die taal.

[–]PsychoCemia 0 points1 point ago

Also known as "Cape Dutch," because, as others have said, the Dutch were the first major colonists on the southern Cape of Africa (and what is now South Africa).

[–]atceh 2 points3 points ago

Yes and even many words sound the same, it's just people see it's written out and think it's pronounced differently.

[–]gizza 3 points4 points ago

I thought that too. Until I started learning German. Not nearly as close as I was hoping.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Because English cats are even meaner

[–]awe300 2 points3 points ago

It really is. In some dialects, that sentence would be spoken as

"Des is mei Wassermelon", which wounds almost exactly like english

[–]AlSpeer 2 points3 points ago

And then you start learning German and realise that they're different enough grammatically to be a giant pain in the ass.

English: German is useful.

German: Deutsch ist nützlich.

Straightforward one to one translation, so far...

English: I work for a German company, so German is useful.

German: Ich arbeite bei einer deutschen Firma, also ist Deutsch nützlich.

German grammar is a lot more similar to Latin than to English, as a lot of information moves to the word endings.

I work, you (singular informal) work, he / she /it works, we work, you (2 +, informal) work, you (1+ formal) work, they work...

In German:

ich arbeite, du arbeitest, er / sie / es arbeitet, wir arbeiten, ihr arbeitet, Sie arbeiten, sie arbeiten.

On the plus side, in German "I work", and "I am working", are both 'ich arbeite', so one less thing to learn.

[–]Meatyfrog 1 point2 points ago

They're both germanic.

[–]Pagan-za 0 points1 point ago

I speak english and afrikaans.

Thanks to afrikaans I can understand a lot of european dialects. Notably dutch and german.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

They're not "dialects".

[–]Pagan-za 0 points1 point ago

They are to me.

My country has 11 official languages and a few unofficial ones. Our anthem is 3 languages. And surprisingly, the most common is a dutch variant... Afrikaans.

To me the difference between dutch and german boils down to boksburg or capetown. Know what they mean, just got to fill in the blanks.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I speak several Germanic languages myself, they're still separate languages. The difference between a dialect and a language is not clear by any means. Your familiarity with them does not make them dialects, but I understand your view.

[–]tercoil 0 points1 point ago

as someone who learns german as a second language from english... whilst there are some words which are easy to get knowing english by no means lets you get through germany with german.

knowing english gets you through germany anyway though because of how well educated they all are in the english language :P

[–]gamerguyal 16 points17 points ago

Alright, I give up. What makes the cat German? Is it the breed?

[–]bestbeforeMar91 17 points18 points ago

The garden is in Poland.

[–]hayagriva84 6 points7 points ago

hey! kurwamacz, to nie jest sprawiedliwe. that's just not fair. we held them back for two weeks with nothing but horses, horses i tell you.

[–]gravitycompels[S] 60 points61 points ago

He looked mad and serious and since German is a more guttural, serious sounding language I thought it was funnier in German, especially when it was close enough to English that it could be understood by English speakers. Blame it on typical American stereotyping.

[–]Foreveraloneatheist 25 points26 points ago

At least you are honest.

[–]Madrawn 0 points1 point ago

Someone once told me that german sounds like someone trying to talk while falling down stairs. ptk ptk ptk ptk

[–]gamerguyal 17 points18 points ago

I am at the same time annoyed and amused by the stereotype that German is an angry-sounding language, because most people that think so have only heard the language while it's being yelled by German soldiers in Call of Duty or a WW2-themed movie.

[–]gravitycompels[S] 36 points37 points ago

I understand, I actually think German is a fantastic language. But I am not above exploiting a stereotype for my own amusement.

[–]cryptopian 7 points8 points ago

I understand, I actually think German is a fantastic language. But I am not above exploiting a stereotype for my own karma.

FTFY

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

Its a very poetic language.

[–]janemorrisgoodall 10 points11 points ago

Oh. That makes sense. Does it make me a bad person that I thought "Ohhh, it's German because light fur, blue eyes?"

[–]crow-black 3 points4 points ago

Blue Eyes White Dragon!

[–]mimine101 1 point2 points ago

That was my guess too. Aryan kitty is Aryan.

[–]Taylor645 4 points5 points ago

I also feel like the cat looks somewhat like a wolf, and for some reason I associate wolves with Germany.

[–]letsgetdisco 1 point2 points ago

DEUTSCH IST SEHR LUSTIG.

did you make this or did you find it?

[–]gravitycompels[S] 4 points5 points ago

I found the picture and added the caption.

[–]HyperSpaz 0 points1 point ago

German is a more guttural, serious sounding language

Care to reconsider? ;-)

[–]gravitycompels[S] 1 point2 points ago

It's just a perception. A typical one in the States.

[–]HyperSpaz 0 points1 point ago

Because of war films?

(It's fine, you can mention the war in this case.)

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

Its because he is speaking german

[–]BenAdaephonDelat 33 points34 points ago

That cats face is what makes this so funny. He looks so angry.

[–]thedudeabides- 7 points8 points ago

you know this made me think about racial stereotypes... is the angry German as offensive as the lazy african-american? they're both negative attributes connected to touchy history but the former seems so much more playful.

[–]ComputerJerk 3 points4 points ago

As with most stereotypes, they're all harmless and playful until someone takes it seriously.

[–]herpaderpaa 2 points3 points ago

Yea?

[–]TheHebrew 3 points4 points ago

Yea!

[–]chazaaam 7 points8 points ago

JA!

[–]BenAdaephonDelat 0 points1 point ago

And... and... I can't think of anything else.

[–]M1n1true 8 points9 points ago

This justifies my entire study of German

[–]Inkyhat 7 points8 points ago

Thank you for not posting this in /adviceanimals!

[–]eshoemaker3 1 point2 points ago

This is one of the first posts to make me actually lol in a long time!

[–]laikasghost 1 point2 points ago

Isn't it Das ist*? I must of not been paying attention in German class last year...

[–]darkwing2k 2 points3 points ago

You can say both. It's not a typical grammatical error. If you say "Dies" it's a little bit like you are explaining or have a strong relation to your ownership and you are proud of it.

As you walking with your child through the zoo and telling the names of the animals: "Dies ist ein Hund" auf den Hund zeig (This is a dog) "Dies ist ein Pferd" auf das Pferd zeig (This is a horse)

But you can also say "Das" in both situations too!

And the typical stereotype german explanation: Hitler: "DIES IST MEIN REICH!" - there is a stronger binding with "dies". but her too: you dan say "Das ist mein Reich". Both would be correct.

With the german language you can be very detailed and exact but also stay creative. One of the reasons why german was the language of science before the World wars happened.

Tschüss. :D

[–]laikasghost 0 points1 point ago

Danke!

[–]Tratix -1 points0 points ago

as someone who grew up speaking german and still knows it quite fluently, i was thinking the same thing. it's "Die Wassermelone" and "das ist meine wassermelone" im pretty sure.

[–]Classy_Dame 6 points7 points ago

I don't know why I find this so funny. I can't stop laughing.

[–]neostead2000 4 points5 points ago

This genuinely made me laugh out loud, definitely belongs here

[–]Grimreaper023 5 points6 points ago

well done. i am now crying from laughing so hard

That was brillant. Thank you, sir.

[–]herzogg 3 points4 points ago

Tuff Tuff

[–]RossTheColonel 0 points1 point ago

Hmm?

[–]GreedDisaster 3 points4 points ago

Tuff Tuff is onomatopoeic for the sound a train makes in german. It's like the literal translation of Choo-Choo.

[–]RossTheColonel 0 points1 point ago

Ah. I suspected that. Like how in other languages the noise dogs make is different than "bark"?

[–]GreedDisaster 2 points3 points ago

Right. It's "wau" or "wuff" in german. It's really weird since you learn it as a child as one of the first 1000 words probably.

Every kid refers to a dog as "wau wau" before it learns that it's actually called a dog or a "hund" in this case.

I really don't know why the difference between "bark" and "wuff" is so extreme. In the case of the train it's actually pretty clear. "Choo-Choo" refers to the signal a train makes and which you can hear from far away. The german "tuff tuff" is imitating the sound the actual steam engine does, you know, when the steam is being exhausted from the cylinders.

[–]RossTheColonel 0 points1 point ago

Thats actually extremely interesting. So wau wau would sound like vow vow?

[–]didi79 1 point2 points ago

you have done what with the word?

[–]RossTheColonel 0 points1 point ago

I accidentally a word. Google translate is like a retarded poly linguist. It knows most of the words, but can't put them in any order whatsoever and mistakes some words for others.

What kind of breed is he? He's so cute - and yes German is the perfect language for his looks - in fact the only language more fit to curse in is Japaneese imho

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

The Japanese traveled the world at one point [in modern history] to find, evaluate and appropriate the best systems they could find. It was a period of great modernization for Japan.

They liked a lot about Germany, its legal system (BGB), their industrial know-how and military order. For very good reasons, Germany was a hotbed of innovation prior to the wars. While Japan had many European nation's aid in training their army, notably France, the Germans ended up being their closest ally.

While the Germans were initially allied with the [non-Communist] Chinese that changed quickly with the advent of WWII. Nazi-Germany and the Japanese Empire became strong allies.

They both had/have authoritarian cultures, maybe that's why you perceive Japanese as equally fitting?

[–]darkwing2k 0 points1 point ago

Just learn: Plattdeutsch / Low German: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plattdeutsch

It's spoken in the northwestern parts in germany and on the other side of the netherlands.

Now you can "understand" dutch, english and german... no no, it's not that easy, but my grandparents speak plattdeutsch and it's amazing how many words you can understand if you speak german and english. but then you are realizing that there are other words that doesn't make sense for you. in my opinion it's an amazing language and it's a tragedy that it isn't spoken that much anymore.

[–]Ownaginatious 2 points3 points ago

I fucking hate the existence of this set of rules when it comes to adjective endings. Especially since it all completely changes based on whether the noun is definite/indefinite or doesn't have an article.

Even that irish polyglot that did an AMA yesterday made some of those errors. It's not a big deal if you're not a native speaker.

[–]Yofi 0 points1 point ago

I know those words for "my," but I just thought "mine" was different.

[–]atceh 0 points1 point ago

"meins" is colloquial for the nominative "meines" and it's never used in written language.

Actually you rarely ever hear someone talk about "Das ist meines" but "Das ist meins!".

But very often you will hear "Das Haus meines Bruders", which would be genitive in that table. And in this case you can't say "Das Haus meins Bruders"

it does

[–]Kastenbrot 1 point2 points ago

Well if you just take "mein" it is a my. But "meine" changes everything. German grammar is a bitch if you don't grow up with it.

Example:

Es ist mein Käse.

It is my cheese.

Tut mir leid dich berichtigen zu müssen.

[–]thatfool 4 points5 points ago

No, it quite literally just doesn't have "my", which is an abbreviation of "mine" that appeared in English in the 12th century.

[–]Kastenbrot 5 points6 points ago

Huh, interesting. Guess I was wrong! Could you give me a source on that please? But thanks for the downvote anyways.

[–]Pagan-za 0 points1 point ago

Interestingly: In afrikaans, "mine" is written as "myne".

[–]gravitycompels[S] 3 points4 points ago

I did the best I could with Google translate. Originally it wanted to translate the second mine into the German word for a coal type mine. I guess I could fix it... but I probably won't.

[–]thatfool 11 points12 points ago

As a native speaker of German, I assure you "meine" is 100% correct.

[–]Mightyfool 1 point2 points ago

bestätigt!

[–]pixartist 0 points1 point ago

Nope, German does use the same word for "my" and "mine"...

[–]xl_ent 0 points1 point ago

Sometimes.

[–]jacobcj -1 points0 points ago

The "e" on the end of "meine" is supposed to correlate to the gender of the noun. Since the German word for watermelon is a feminine word, then yes it is "meine Wassermellone"

Since the second line is a stand alone statement, the "E" at the end is unnecessary. It doesn't make it wrong. It's just ... What ever.

[–]ABearDrankMyPee 18 points19 points ago

Actually, as a German native speaker, I have to correct you. The second "meine" refers to the same "Wassermelone" as the first, so you can't change the word. To my surprises the whole meme is in correct German.

Still feels weird to see something German on Reddit..
