Just played a game earlier today where I Duressed and saw two bonfires in my opponents hand, so I Duressed again and hit the other one.

Attack as usual and pass turn. Opponent draws... and it's a Bonfire

[–]xContradict 13 points14 points ago

That's why you run 3! :P

[–]JerseyBricklayer 7 points8 points ago

We do run 4 so we can draw them.

"OMG ! I can't BELIEVE you drew your 4 of's !'

[–]Filobel 13 points14 points ago

Assuming this was on something like 4th or 5th turn, and that he was playing 4 copies (rather than three), chances of drawing a 3rd bonfire that turn was somewhere around 4% or 5% (depending how much drawing was involved, mulligans, etc.). So yeah, that was pretty lucky (though not impossible).

[–]thattoasterguy 79 points80 points ago

TSG probably sold them the bonfire too.

[–]greg2367 21 points22 points ago

too soon man, too soon T_T

[–]tosborn13 1 point2 points ago

Just right soonness, otherwise nobody would know what the hell he was talking about.

[–]HyphyHonkey -2 points-1 points ago

As someone who's met that prick in RL, I lol'd at this

[–]Wrenky 10 points11 points ago

Is he a prick? I've only heard nice things about him, other than the "I'm a huge thief" part.

[–]Wzevon 9 points10 points ago

Yea I've met him and he seemed like a pretty nice guy.

[–]HyphyHonkey 1 point2 points ago

Tossing some kids card across the room, wouldn't check a little for MRB box pre-orders until I asked like two different people (other employees who were friendly at to this day are helpful and cool shit.)

Maybe he wasn't always one but he did things that were just major social faux pas

[–]JaggedOne 0 points1 point ago

Newbie here. What is TSG?

[–]thattoasterguy 2 points3 points ago

He was a pretty good guy who worked for ChannelFireball.com But this week he was severed from ChannelFireball because he was independently selling some expensive cards from ChannelFireballs resources through ebay, and there is now a joke with TSG and bonfires.

[–]kiragami 25 points26 points ago

I am usually never a fan of this guy or even this .gif in general but this time this fucking time it is the most fitting thing in the world.

[–]Archery999 2 points3 points ago

Never realized the table was a DFC.

[–]HMR 2 points3 points ago

(╯°□° )╯︵ ̦̥̮̯͎͈̝┻͖̞̼━͈̫┻̤̼̮

[–]tisactually_nohomo_ 0 points1 point ago

All those cards! All that sorting D: unless they're all sleeved, then it's okay!

[–]Hirosakamoto 0 points1 point ago

The guy that got flipped on should have been able to keep all of the cards that were on the table.

[–]Firevine 0 points1 point ago

Why is this so mesmerizing?

[–]thebucho 25 points26 points ago

I don't know why but if my opponent is playing bonfire he will miracle 3 of them per game. If I am playing bonfire I will draw three in my opening hand and then mull all the way to three drawing 3 bonfires every time.

[–]JerseyBricklayer 9 points10 points ago

They troll me like that also. Especially in the finals of big events.

[–]Green-Daze 5 points6 points ago

I never draw them in my opening hand, but the top 2 cards of my deck each game are always bonfires...

[–]Opulation 0 points1 point ago

I know exactly what you mean. I only run 2, and it almost never fails that I'll have 1 in my opening hand, and the other is my very first draw, when its miracle is useless...

[–]loom_weaver 20 points21 points ago

Started playing again during Avacyn Restored.

In my first booster draft I saw this card. Couldn't remember what the (X) meant and I forgot about the red glyph = mythic rare. Person beside me got a nice Bonfire.

[–]gyenen 3 points4 points ago

Much less so, given that cavern is borderline useless in a draft, while bonfire is arguably the best rare/mythic in the set in draft.

[–]Green-Daze 2 points3 points ago

I traded a cavern, sigarda, thrun, and some junk for 2 bonfires, a tamiyo, and 2 metamorphs the week after the prerelease. Easily the best trade I've ever made.

[–]hello_mellow 0 points1 point ago

I was at a draft where a Snapcaster got passed 6 times before someone noticed it.

[–]hyugafan 3 points4 points ago

Innistrad draft pod, friend on my left, he's sitting next to a new player. first pack he gets passed we hear an audible WTF!!!?.

guess who walked home with a foil snapcaster mage?

[–]Shadowcat0909 0 points1 point ago

I pulled a Bonfire of the Damned during pre-release, when I just started seriously playing. At that time, the card was ridiculously undervalued, and I just thought it was a normal rare, so I ended up selling it to my LGS for 7$, because they sold it for 14$.

[–]unhappymagicplayer 5 points6 points ago

That's why you play blue black control!

[–]Wrenky 3 points4 points ago

Or stuffy doll! You come to looooveeee seeing them top deck a bonfire, sigh sadly, and put it back in their hand.

[–]Nyarlathotep124 1 point2 points ago

Or mono black control, or esper control, or my personal favorite, grixis control. Either way, control ftw.

[–]unhappymagicplayer 1 point2 points ago

The only issue with those decks is they fold to U/B :(

[–]TankTarget 1 point2 points ago

I've been playing Grixis for like 2 months and recently switched to UB. My MU vs other decks with Blue improved substantially.

[–]tosborn13 2 points3 points ago

This is my favorite reaction to a bonfire or any miracle card.

[–]akaalkatraz 8 points9 points ago

This card is the exact reason I sideboard 4 safe passages. If you know they have them, at a certain point you should be ready to counter it at any time.

[–]kirkkismet 16 points17 points ago

this is also good BotD tech

[–]akaalkatraz 0 points1 point ago

Very much so. Unfortunately I only own one :/

[–]MetallicDragon 0 points1 point ago

It's really cheap, only $0.50 on starcitygames.com

[–]akaalkatraz 0 points1 point ago

Can't believe I missed that. I should definitely pick up a few then haha

[–]sebbyk 0 points1 point ago

Love the flavour text on that card so much.

[–]sebbyk 0 points1 point ago

"It's actually quite simple, but since you've only recently begun to walk upright, it may take some time to explain." —Jace Beleren, to Garruk Wildspeaker

Love this flavour text so much.

[–]mutecl 1 point2 points ago

Why you guys are downvoting this??

[–]atheistpiece 5 points6 points ago

That's usually my opponents face.

I've been playing an esper control/reanimator strategy, and bonfire doesn't do shit against me. They either walk right into a mana leak/dissipate/negate, or they bonfire a wurmcoil or young greezy that I just gained a bunch from.

[–]Nyarlathotep124 5 points6 points ago

Grixis control player here, bonfire immunity feels good.

[–]GrooGrux 3 points4 points ago

In the pre-release, I was playing for 1st/2nd and I was on game three and I was at 1. My opponent had a stupid good field of creatures and that one flying angel creature that makes everything indestructible or whatever. I had the guy that you can use to tap another creature, the blue one, he was soul bound to the creature that lets me untap him for U2. I had enough mana to tap all but one of his creatures. I had one card that could win me the game, everyone knew it. It was bonfire. I used this combo and chump blocked one of his creatures, it was the only way I could live. I only had one chump blocker. So, each turn I literally prayed for a miracle, I was doomed. I was literally just flipping my top card over, not even caring. I knew, he knew, everyone knew, I needed to either flip a creature to chump block or the the bonfire to win. Everyturn I would pray for a miracle and then flip the card and everyone would react. I flipped a chump blocker 6 times! I suppose those were 6 mini miracles. It was on the 7th turn of this that I flipped the bonfire! The room erupted! He did exactly what is seen in this GIF and split a 1 + 1/2 box prize while he walked away with 3 packs. I did not feel bad. It was a true miracle!

[–]zero_fucks_to_give 13 points14 points ago

That prize structure should be criminal.

[–]GrooGrux 1 point2 points ago

He might have gotten more then 3 packs, maybe it was 9. It was a box for first, 1/2 for second, 1/2 between 2/3rd and 1/2 split between the bottom 4 or something like that. It is actually a very fair prize structure considering there is usually only about 20/25 people.

[–]GrandArchitect 11 points12 points ago

I think statistically your 6 chumps in a row are more of a miracle.

[–]GrooGrux 1 point2 points ago

I know, right! It was making my opponent so mad. He was sure the had the game in the bag, and he had to pee!

[–]asmodeanreborn 1 point2 points ago

I guess this is why it's tempting to run this in the sideboard.

[–]asmodeanreborn 0 points1 point ago

Or run Mono-black with 4 Phyrexian Obliterators, I guess.

[–]Microchimp 2 points3 points ago

Which is exactly what I do. 4 Oblits and 4 Phyrexian Crusaders. Come at me Bonfire!

[–]theshaper88 4 points5 points ago

You have obviously never fought an opponent running Bonifre and Noxious Revival

[–]DeathSpank 10 points11 points ago

More like obnoxious revival

amirite?

[–]mjdgoldeneye 12 points13 points ago

4 Bonfires, 4 Thunderous Wraths, 4 Noxious Revival, 4 Reclaim, 4 Faithless Looting, 4 Wild Guess, 4 Mulch, 4 Rampant Growth, 2 Farseek, 2 Incinerate, 24 land.

</deck>

EDIT: -2 Incinerate, -2 Farseek, +4 Increasing Vengeance

Sideboard:
4x Smelt
2x Naturalize
3x Slagstorm
4x Gutshot
2x Whipflare

[–]Shadowcat0909 1 point2 points ago

I feel as though this might not work.

[–]Shadowcat0909 0 points1 point ago

But part of me hopes it does.

[–]mjdgoldeneye 0 points1 point ago

If you can get a Thunderous Wrath or Bonfire in the graveyard (or if you can top deck and play either), every time you draw a Noxious Revival or Reclaim, you can set up to miracle again.

Tons of draw (and discard) and some ramp means you won't be short on mana and you'll probably get those Revivals/Reclaims.

Plus, Thunderous Wrath + Increasing Vengeance is 10 damage for RRR.

[–]Shadowcat0909 0 points1 point ago

You need to figure out how to draw during your opponent's turn. Think twice would work great if it was inside these colours.

[–]kampai12 2 points3 points ago

I remember that, he was stuck on 4 mana and bonfired me like 4 times for 2 each time.

[–]Krose13 0 points1 point ago

This is spot on!

[–]dontbiteitholmes 0 points1 point ago

Yep, looks about right.

[–]Nyarlathotep124 -1 points0 points ago

Heh, it feels good to be the control player.

[–]pgan91 1 point2 points ago

Dissipate.

Then watch them rage.

[–]wingman2011 3 points4 points ago

Outwit. Do the same thing, but for 1 mana.

[–]pgan91 2 points3 points ago

Uh... do you know anybody who actually runs outwit in their deck?

[–]wingman2011 5 points6 points ago

No, I don't. Sometimes I just like throwing fringe cards out there because I can.

[–]atheistpiece 1 point2 points ago

'eh... I'd rather have the dissipate. Outwit is too narrow.

[–]brentbuchanan 1 point2 points ago

New player, second FNM (Inn-block constructed). I did this to the guy who taught me how to play.

He miracles Bonfire, I play outwit. I didn't beat him, but he burst out laughing at my dumb luck.

[–]Hirosakamoto 0 points1 point ago

Why? You have a larger chance of having it in your hand than he does of drawing it that turn.

[–]tisactually_nohomo_ 0 points1 point ago

Youth in Revolt! :D

[–]chautemoc 0 points1 point ago

I love this movie so damn much.

[–]contradicting_you 0 points1 point ago

So, are there any cards that can manipulate the top of your opponent's deck in Standard?

[–]tenchimal 0 points1 point ago

Maybe I'm a newb but is the difference between X and XX? and if there is none then whats the big deal about the miracle cost?

[–]brkn613 0 points1 point ago

You have to pay the same cost for X. So to do 4 damage with bonfire normally, you would have to may 4 for the first X, 4 for the second X, and then the 2 red.

(I don't have the exact rule number, but would put it if I did.)

[–]Karunamon -2 points-1 points ago

My group has gotten very irritated at me for my propensity for pulling Entreat at precisely the right time. Today:

3 life remain

Green/blue deck, elves everywhere

On the hook for upwards of 50 damage that I won't be able to block

Land flooded all game

Last turn comes up

Pull entreat angels

My best poker face as I say "Well shoot, looks like you win.. all I have is this.. "

Tap 12 plains

Plunk down entreat

Look on opponent's face was priceless

Miracles are such fun. Hope they keep them around in future sets.
