                Me too. I watched a lot of the weightlifting this time and I caught both the elbow popping out and then the bar falling on another lifter's neck.
                plus countless lifters falling down. Before too long I was afraid to watch anymore.

                As a sport I know it has inherent risks but I wonder if they could somehow make it safer. Probably not, just wishing because I do enjoy the sport but the tension of waiting for the inevitable crushed athlete sucks a lot of the fun out of it for me.

                As a much less hardcore participant in that sport, please remember that these athletes are going for huge numbers even for them.

                Failed lifts generally go forward or backward and are very easy to get away from. These people do NOT want to lose a lift, and so will fight harder/be riskier to see if they can hold on.

                Please also consider how many injuries occur in every other sport. Would you give more than a moment's though to a torn ACL or some other devastating injury in soccer, football, or baseball?

                This idea would most likely be ridiculed if anyone tried to actually implement it, but perhaps the weights could be on a set of pulleys anchored above, that only allow them to fall so far?

                They wouldn't help you lift it, or even prevent the bar from returning to ground, it would just kick in in the event of a sudden downward acceleration.

                It would stop the bar from crushing people, but wouldn't do anything about dislocated elbows.
