Hooray for tritium!

I love radioactivity. We'd be totally screwed without it.

Ah radioactivity, the cause and solution for our problems.

Tritium isn't what actually glows.

Technically correct- the best kind of correct! Tritium emits electrons though radioactive decay. The electrons, in turn, react with the phosphor coating on the inside of the vial, causing the phosphor layer to glow. Isn't science fun?

Just be glad we use tritium/phosphor vials now, instead of radium paint.

It's the happiest feeling when it gets dark and that little bulge by my nightstand starts to glow.

I'm with you buddy. Amazon just dropped off a fresh set of Meprolights for my Glock 23 yesterday.I got one of those Glock bench mats too. I installed them last night at about 2 am and took my dogs for a walk on my property. They are SO BRIGHT. Holy crap.

I have a question relating to this: Have any of you seen the tritium paint that they sell so that you can make your normal iron blade sight into a night sight? Supposedly, it is real tritium, which is, as we all know, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen. With normal night sights, it is a small amount of this material contained in a little tube, but the paint is just a liquid that you apply like finger nail polish. Would there be any health concerns associated with this product (for instance, would it cause any harm to children or small animals?)

Tritium uses the alpha particles that hit the ZnS to create a light.

Since alpha is so weak, it doesn't hurt anyone or anything. Keychains are made of the stuff!
