There are more Arctics and other fox kits at /r/foxes should you decide to check them out.

[–]WGRTS 5 points6 points ago

oh my goodness.. the picture of the foxes there.... are so damn adorable.

it's like... a cross between a cat and a dog.. would be cool to pet one, bet they are soft as the clouds

[–]Hex-Kitty 2 points3 points ago

Soft and crazy don't forget crazy. They can be the most hyper and randomly aggressive pets ever. Probably because they are not completely domestic (like Bengal cats and hedgehogs, how they still retain some wild behaviors) but they are cute and cuddly if you have the time to be with them and keep them busy and active.

[–]konyismydad 1 point2 points ago

[–]Hex-Kitty 1 point2 points ago

Nope, them too. My friends sister owns one. He can be a real handful.

[–]konyismydad 0 points1 point ago

Dang, really? I was really hoping that they would make great pets...

[–]Hex-Kitty 1 point2 points ago

They really do if you have the time to spend with them and can keep them stimulated. Lots of handling young helps aggression and constant controlled stimulation keeps them from destroying things. If you have the time and patience they make very fun pets. But I wouldn't recommend them for first time pet owners or people who have young kids (15 and younger).

[–]konyismydad 0 points1 point ago

How did your sister get her hands on one of them? I can't imagine they're very easy to get..

[–]Sierra_Fox 2 points3 points ago

How did I not know about this!? Have all my upvotes.

[–]PA55W0RD 1 point2 points ago

I am pretty sure it's okay to call them pups too.

From Wikipedia: Male foxes are known as dogs or reynards, females as vixens, and young as kits, pups or cubs.

[–]bigcitycrows 21 points22 points ago

Technically it's an arctic marble fox, a color mutation that only exists on fur farms.

Foxes have grown in popularity within the exotic pet trade because of their beauty, curious and playful nature, and similarity to dogs. They are, however, very smelly and will continuously scent mark their home by urinating and defecating often and in obvious places. They are often destructive and skittish, nervous animals, so do not do well in people's homes around other high-energy animals, or children. Foxes often kill cats, too, so can pose a danger to both fellow pets and keepers.

[–]facemelt 12 points13 points ago

well that doesn't sound worth it

[–]Eldryce 4 points5 points ago

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that they probably can't be house trained, can they? Makes me sad, I want one.

[–]thatoneguynotheother 6 points7 points ago

Actually yes they can, as well as other things. Usually they are trained to use a litter box. They can also be trained to fetch, sit, lay down, and even do a barrel roll.

Balto the Arctic fox --- Swiper the cross fox that does a barrel roll

[–]Lupevs 8 points9 points ago

Swiper's owner here! Confirming these remarks! All true! (Take this upvote!)

My family dog has has more "accidents" in the house than Swiper has had in his lifetime. Foxes have been referred to as the "catlike canine," by many.

While Swiper preferred his litter box and wandering all over the furniture, he would still walk on a leash and do tricks like a dog! :D

If anybody is curious about what owning a fox is like, I blogged it all here.

The fox is a faithful companion for life if you manage to befriend one!

[–]thatoneguynotheother 1 point2 points ago

:O / Thank you, btw your videos and blog. Brilliant!

[–]Lupevs 1 point2 points ago

Thank you very much!

Swiper deserves the credit. All I did was hang out with the guy. :)

[–]thatoneguynotheother 1 point2 points ago

Still, I think that the display for others to see what Swiper was smart enough to learn was very informative and beneficial in understanding foxes as part of the canine family and also their pros/cons to being tamed/domesticated over time for life with humans. While you may think it a small part, it is certainly one of the thousand foot steps it takes to complete that journey.

FOR SCIENCE!

[–]Eldryce 2 points3 points ago

Welp, now I want one.

[–]thatoneguynotheother 1 point2 points ago

False - More domestic cats kill fox kits then foxes kill cats. This is a common misconception.

[–]bigcitycrows 6 points7 points ago

I think what it said was

Foxes often kill cats, too

as in, if you try to put Mr. Cat and Mr Desired Pet Fox together as co-pets, this is not a good idea, maybe, for the cat.

[–]thatoneguynotheother 0 points1 point ago

I think this happens less often then thought, however there are quite a few the Flashman's own (7 foxes right now I think) all very gentle with their little daughter, very well tempered even though various breeds and play with their dogs. The last statistic I read was a wild fox may kill a cat once every 6 years (.17 a year) and those are usually not full grown cats either. From what I have read and seen, they have no more viciousness around other house pets then your average dog (that is IF you have one that came from a breeder who breeds for pets or the domestic line of fox from Russia). That being said, wild foxes, can be dangerous as any wild animal is possible to carry rabies. Though it should be noted a cat is large for even a red fox (the largest breed) to go after for a meal also too much trouble. They would rather eat the cats food if left outside.

edit:used wrong word

[–]bigcitycrows 1 point2 points ago

TIL. I've long told people worried about foxes or owls killing Fluffy that they shouldn't bother being paranoid and should instead be wary of coyotes, but I always assumed it was because of the far higher numbers of coyotes in proximity to humans, not foxes being incapable/uninterested or for lack of trying.

[–]thatoneguynotheother 0 points1 point ago

Although it gets a reputation for being sly (for figuring ways to get into the chicken coups) they are a bit lazy hunters. They are omnivores too so if they can they will eat roots/berries and move on. In Europe they have the Urban Red Fox that has become adapted well to living in the city. They scavenge up dog bowls and cat food left out, or gardens to an extent. If this isn't available they will turn to eating bugs and mice even. They don't have a long life expectancy though, cars usually get them before they reach 3. Coyotes and depending where you live, hawks even are more likely I imagine. At least when I lived in Colorado those were the two problematic hunters.

[–]bigcitycrows 1 point2 points ago

Ah-ha, it is now my turn, for although the notion of hawks killing pets is common, it's very rare and not worth worrying over- I've only ever seen actual proof of a hawk killing a kitten. I work at a raptor rescue and all the time we get stories with no eye witnesses where the presumed culprit is a hawk "because I saw one." We had a lady a couple months ago rev into our field, leap out and accuse one of our hawks of trying to eat her dog that morning, then threaten to shoot it if she saw it again.

In any case when it comes to people being paranoid about wild animals getting their pets, I do always tell people to be careful of coyotes. If anything in North America is going to get your pet, order of likelihood is coyotes, followed by bobcats or fisher cats if you have them.

[–]thatoneguynotheother 0 points1 point ago

TIL about hawks : Thats insane! I find it fascinating when people go on about it that much with out actually seeing it take place. Seeing as you are the more experienced raptor handler (if not what you do then it is now your tag regardless) how do raptors handle as far as people who do practice with them for hunting and such? I have always been curious about this and as to why in the states it is very restricted.

[–]bigcitycrows 0 points1 point ago

I would be happy to talk about it! My family can't get me to shut up! ;) I'm a volunteer raptor rehabber and an apprentice falconer, so I think I can answer your questions. /formal

How they handle entirely depends on the species; Harris hawks are almost like dogs, Cooper's hawks have the nasty tendency to land on your face instead of the glove, bald eagles wish to kill your firstborn, and merlin falcons are rockets. This is of course general humorous species stereotypes, all kinds of factors go into it depending on how they were raised and trained.

The keeping of raptors in the US is so heavily restricted for two big reasons; one, it takes a lot of specialized knowledge to keep a raptor healthy in captivity, inexperienced/unknowledgeable people can easily kill them by accident, and they can be very dangerous;

and two, the whole deal about the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, a tl;dr version of which is "all our birds were gettin' screwed because there was no regulation on taking them out of the wild, so we put them on lockdown." Raptors in general suffered a lot because of being apex predators, so they got the short-end of the DDT poison stick in that the poison culminated up the food chain and had the worst effects on them, plus prior to that they were basically shot on sight by people who saw them as competition or a livestock threat.

With all the restrictions currently in place incidence of abuse or neglect are practically nonexistent. With things like wolves or tigers or monkeys, in the US it's very easy to simply buy one or wait a week for a permit and boom, you've got one, without actually knowing how to take care of it. To legally keep a raptor in captivity, you have to jump through so many hoops and dedicate so much time to prove yourself to earn the privilege, so "impulse buys" or getting an animal without truly knowing what you're getting in to are impossible. Due to the legal requirements you also automatically have a network of support from other people qualified to care for raptors, so if you realize it's not for you or suffer financial ruin- which is a primary cause of many situations like people giving up and neglecting pets like tigers- there are plenty of people who you can give your bird to.

[–]thatoneguynotheother 1 point2 points ago

This is extremely fascinating, while I don't think I could ever myself take on the magnitude of the task I think it is a very noble one. At least now I picture "bigcitycrows" to be somewhat of an english noble instead of blank internet face.

The bit about cooper's hawks quite literally made me spit my water out from laughing. Which I prefer to chocking.

That also makes sense about the DDT issues and so on. Sad to hear but I get where that strict ruling came from. Reminds of how the Kit Foxes were almost entirely wiped off the face of the Canadian plains mistaken for or just in case killed because of livestock concerns with coyotes. Thankfully they have been helped along back into thriving in the plains there in the more recent years.

I agree with policies though that keep the impulse buys away, I wish there were more for foxes in the states like this because while they can be a good pet they need and equally good owner who knows what they are getting into.

[–]butterflypoon 5 points6 points ago

I like how the URL is Mr. Sox. I hope he doesn't become a coat :(

[–]ntdars 7 points8 points ago

Where the fuck do I find one and how much do I have to pay?!?!

[–]Hex-Kitty 2 points3 points ago

Usually exotic pet stores and arctic foxes (around me anyway) usually run close to 700-800. (not including the license to own one)

[–]nourez 0 points1 point ago

You mean I could've had a fox for less than what I payed for my yorkie? Fuck.

[–]Hex-Kitty 0 points1 point ago

Depends on the fox but yes. But when you get into ones like arctic foxes and fennecs they get more expensive.

[–]thatoneguynotheother 1 point2 points ago

Depends where you live, in the US they can range from as low as 250 up to 800. It really depends on the breeder and the coat. Some states require special permits or don't allow them at all. Other require nothing more then documents saying you didn't steal it from the woods, it was breed for a pet's life.

[–]Eldryce 1 point2 points ago

Google reverse image search.

[–]MagiesNoms 0 points1 point ago

I was actually googling "baby arctic fox" because I thought I was sure they were born black, not black and white, and this picture came up in the results. Apparently they go through an in-between stage which can sometimes result in the striped face shown in the picture. I always thought they went from black to grey to white, the stripe is pretty cool though.

[–]ArcticFoxer 1 point2 points ago

I like this

[–]mattnumber 0 points1 point ago

Wait, haven't there been crazy advances in the domestication of foxes in recent years? Seems like I saw something in National Geographic (while I was waiting for a prescription at the grocery store) a few months ago. How close are we to reliable, healthy pet foxes? I know I'm ready.

[–]bigcitycrows 6 points7 points ago

You're talking about the Russian domestic fox experiment where the least-aggressive foxes were selectively bred for generations and have resulted in more and more docile and dog-like foxes mentally and physically. (The ones that didn't make the cut are turned into coats.)

They're much more easily tamed down for human co-existence than their ancestors, but they aren't exactly "pet" level yet, though you can currently buy them as exotic pets.

Getting them into America is a bitch, though, and would theoretically cost more than the price of a legal captive-bred tiger, so there's that.

Following the demise of the Soviet Union, the project has run into serious financial problems. In 1996, there were 700 domesticated foxes, but in 1998, without enough funds for food and salaries, the number had to be reduced to 100. Most of the project expenses are covered by selling the foxes as pets, but the project remains in a difficult situation and is looking for new sources of revenue from outside sources.

[–]mattnumber 0 points1 point ago

Ugh, that sounds a lot less foxes-as-pets-landscape-changing than I remembered from skimming the article. I suppose there aren't a lot of people clamoring to throw money at a long-term, non-revenue-generating program like that. Guess I'll have to wait for a few rounds of reincarnation to own a trainable fox.

[–]bigcitycrows 1 point2 points ago

They're trainable, they're just not like Disney Movie Animals as many people expect and are higher-maintenance than most are used to/can provide for.

but yeah, the program comes up a lot, and it's often sensationalized or interpreted as "we now have pets that are fox outside, golden retriever inside".

[–]thatoneguynotheother 4 points5 points ago

Did you read the last National Geographic on the team they sent to the farm? They said the ones that they were around acting like labradors more than anything else. Wanting in your lap, rolling over, wagging their tails and wanting the attention. The process has done some really interesting things.

Furs farms get the mutations because of the adrenal glands shrinking as they become more and more tame/domesticated, What has been achieved in that farm (while I don't agree with the inhumane practices they used) showed that full domestication could be completed in a quicker amount of time then that of canines we have as pets already.

Pricing is a bitch on sib-foxes about 5000 - 6000.

You could get a tame breed Corsac Fox, they are small and stink much less, they are born without scent glands that the other breeds have. Just as cute and trainable. Heres a video of some indoor pet Corsacs.

In another article I also read that it is possible foxes were pets with humans before dogs were, they have excavated bones in asia with people buried with fox remains in the same manor that they are buried with other pets that date back before written history (don't quote me because I was reading through this over a year and half back), I think it was about 40,000 years old.

[–]letheix 0 points1 point ago

One reason that the experiments took place is because animal rights activists were putting pressure on the fur farms. The tame foxes are not distressed by close spaces and captivity to the degree that wild stock foxes are. Not that it makes fur farming okay, but the animals suffer less than before.

[–]thatoneguynotheother 1 point2 points ago

I was more referring to the vast boils they did to kill the ones who didn't pass the breeding quality levels. The pictures I saw from this resulted in lots of feels. On that level of how many they had it wasn't possible to keep them all, just hated to see that it happened the way it did.

[–]mattnumber 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for all the info. I'll stick with bull terriers; they're enough of a challenge for me.

[–]Madhubala 1 point2 points ago

Here's the link to the wiki if anyone's interested: Russian Fox Study info

I thought of this as soon as I saw the picture, since colour mutations started to appear as the domestication process progressed in the study.

[–]Eldryce 0 points1 point ago

I want to know this as well. I want a pet fox.

[–]NotAFox 0 points1 point ago

Yup! You can get one of the truly domesticated russian foxes at http://www.domesticfox.com/ if you're truly interested.

[–]VaguelyCondescending 0 points1 point ago

You know I actually find this picture to be a perfect example of something I've wondered about and found very interesting.

Most human beings would see this pup and think it's cute. It's like there's some sort of innate concept of cuteness that we all have. What is it? Is it merely coincidence that one of the earliest domesticated animals happens to possess these features, or are they related? Besides wolves being useful for cleaning up scrap food, and hunting, and all the other things they would eventually come to help us with...did early man also take into account that they were adorable?

[–]bigcitycrows 1 point2 points ago

The retention of baby-like traits in adult animals is called Neoteny and does indeed play a large role in the story of domestication as both a cause and effect.

[–]VaguelyCondescending 0 points1 point ago

Thanks, that was an interesting read.

[–]Fishare -2 points-1 points ago
