Swag wasn't the actual goods, it was a term used to describe the 'saggy/loose' sack that the goods were carried in. Swag comes from the nordic word svaga which describes the 'droop' in a sail.

Whenever I hear someone say they have 'swag', I think of a viking laughing at them. Aww you have swag? Erectile disfunction's a bitch.

I guess there's a few meanings. As a noun it can mean the goods or the sack, as a verb it means the drooping you mentioned.

In the I.T. and other industries, the term refers to freebies they give you for advertisement purposes i.e. free hats, shirts, mugs etc. with the company's logo on it. SWAG = Shit We All Get. This has been the accepted definition for quite a few years now. I have no idea what rappers are on about, but they've got the definition wrong.

I've hung out with a group of biologist Ph.D's. I do not have a Ph.D. We were all at a convention, and a table was giving out free stuff.

All of them were eyeing the table and saying things like "Are you going to grab some of that swag?" "How do you plan on doing it?" "Well we could go with a cognitive approach." "There are enough people around for a social environment to deter them from getting angry." "Let's go get dat swag."

I guess I completely missed the redefining of the term. Swag (schwag) will always be dirty brick weed in my mind. In a group conversation at a bar last weekend a guy said, in the douchiest of tones, he had swag and I replied, "Oh you poor bastard, I wouldn't brag about that." He gave me a weird stunned look like he didn't know what to say next, picked up his vegas bomb, and walked off somewhere.
