You can almost see the guy's brain getting knocked back and forth in his skull.

[–]Torus2112 62 points63 points ago

I like how his face basically stays in the same place at first, then catches up with his skull.

[–]spunkymarimba 11 points12 points ago

When i watched it i thought, to put it mildly, ouch, but reading your comment really bring it home, there must be real damage being done there. I hope he was OK afterwards.

[–]The_Painted_Man 13 points14 points ago

RIP, boxer dude.

[–]retroshark 0 points1 point ago

he was probably good for another couple of punches..

i love the way his skull takes the impact first, and as it starts its travel, the flesh, skin, muscle and hair take a moment to accelerate.

[–]papsmearfestival 5 points6 points ago

coup contrecoup

[–]d_holladay789 0 points1 point ago

I really enjoy watching brain damage in slow motion. Is that a bad thing?

[–]Obliviousobi 169 points170 points ago

This is why boxing is so dangerous, that guys brain is just bouncing around inside his skull after this.

[–]SecretSnack 76 points77 points ago

That, plus they give the boxer time to stand up and get another concussion. MMA always looked more brutal to me, but it's actually safer than boxing in that regard.

[–]Native136 102 points103 points ago

I think I remember reading something on here saying that the safest method of boxing was bare knuckle boxing due to the fact that fighters would mostly do body shots as they didn't want to break their hands while hitting the opponents face.

[–]martyrdod 25 points26 points ago

QI! I watched that episode the other day.

[–]feureau 7 points8 points ago

QI has been known to exaggerate though.

I wonder if bareknuckle boxing thing is true. It sounds like a lot more fun than gloved boxing

[–]Magnon 11 points12 points ago

If you're wondering if you're more likely to break your hands on someones face, then the answer is yes. Small bones in your fingers man.

[–]Darth_Tard 1 point2 points ago

Punching a dude in the jaw is the worst possible idea when bare knuckle fighting. You know how strong and tough a jawbone is?

[–]midnightsbane04 3 points4 points ago

Zygomatic arch is your fist's best friend.

[–]WeaponexT 0 points1 point ago

you speak the truth.

[–]Darth_Tard 0 points1 point ago

Right. It's a fantastic way to achieve a knockout, but if you're not wearing anything over your hands, slamming your fist into a jawbone in order to slam the jawbone up into the arch is a great way to break bones and tear ligaments in your fingers.

[–]midnightsbane04 1 point2 points ago

slamming your fist into a jawbone in order to slam the jawbone up

What? That sounds needlessly complicated. Just punch him in the cheekbone and skip the jawbone.

[–]WeaponexT 2 points3 points ago

Hitting a guy in the forehead is so much worse though. I used to try to get a guy to hit me in the forehead, it may hurt me but it will likely break his hand.

[–]redditbarns 4 points5 points ago

You used to try to get a guy to hit you in the forehead?

[–]WeaponexT 1 point2 points ago

Not off the street or something but if I am in a fight I keep my chin tucked in and block the hit with my forehead and when they are open hit them in the nose or chin.

[–]voltar 1 point2 points ago

This is true. More specifically right in the middle of the hairline. It's the thickest part of the skull and is convex making it structurally more resilient as well. Punching it straight on is like punching a skin covered ball of concrete.

[–]moneymizzlle 2 points3 points ago

are you kidding me?

[–]ignitionnight 0 points1 point ago

Maybe, but I punched a guy and broke his jaw, punched another guy right above the eye and broke the hell out of my hand. The standard boxers fracture, and two knuckles.

[–]Darth_Tard 1 point2 points ago

Knowing how to punch certainly helps. Still a risk that you take, bare knuckle on a dude's face.

[–]KindBass 1 point2 points ago

I've heard arguments that football was safer (for your head) when they wore leather helmets and no facemasks. Guys weren't so quick to dive head-first at each other. Same principle, I guess. No idea if that's legit or not, though.

[–]martyrdod 0 points1 point ago

Well if you think about it. It's much easier to break the bones in your hands if you punch someone in the head than in the stomach.

[–]WeaponexT 2 points3 points ago

Actually it is because your fists do more superficial damage to your face but less damage to your brain because the gloves shake the brain more. Ask anyone who has boxed and they will probably tell you that they feel it a lot more when they get a good pop with the gloves as opposed to bare fists. I know that was the case for me.

[–]Viend 0 points1 point ago

Are you sure you were hitting as hard with your fists as you were with the gloves?

[–]WeaponexT 1 point2 points ago

Yes sir. Trust me I know very few things in this world but I know about this.

[–]lunchboxg4 5 points6 points ago

This sounds a little like the broscience that if football players (American) didn't wear as many pads or a helmet, then there would be less accidents because they would be less likely to crash in to another player unprotected. Kind of sounds like putting the cart before the horse.

[–]pgrily 6 points7 points ago

Rugby?

Not that I've seen much of it, but I get the sense they don't run at each other Juggernaut style.

[–]morphintime 4 points5 points ago

Different structures to the game. You can only pass the ball backwards in rugby, also you can only tackle the guy with the ball. So what you have phases where the guy with the ball runs sort of diagonally at the defense then passes the ball diagonally back or gets tackled. Also the defense doesn't usually get the opportunity to really charge at the ballcarrier because that would break up their defensive structure. Good example of how this works here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heoO_5MvZ0w

It certainly isn't because they're holding back for fear of injury. The hard hits can still happen, the hardest legal tackles happen when the ball is kicked high and the guy catching gets wiped out just after he catches the ball. As seen in 0:48, 0:57 and 1:23 of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMbKxesO0L8

Keep in mind quite a few tackles in this video are illegal, (ie, any where the guy getting tackled is not in possession of the ball, any tackles above the shoulder, picking the guy up and dropping him on his head).

[–]fodder008 2 points3 points ago

I play rugby and in my experience the tackler in rugby is much more likely to get hurt than the tacklee??

[–]pgrily 0 points1 point ago

Oh there's definitely plenty of chances to get injured. I'm just assuming (based off of what I've heard) that rugby players don't usually hit each other as hard since they aren't as well padded (more pads/protection leads to harder hits).

[–]fodder008 0 points1 point ago

I guess I should have been clearer, I was trying to agree with you :p In rugby instead of getting your bell rung by a big hit the most dangerous part of the game (the tackle) is initiated by you (in most cases) so you are able to ready yourself for a big hit

[–]Thimble 1 point2 points ago

Why is that broscience? It sounds logical to me.

[–]chem_dawg 0 points1 point ago

Or use the bas rutten palm strike

[–]DisRuptive1 0 points1 point ago

This is why MMA fighters wear small gloves, to protect their hands and the other fighter's face.

[–]dbick 19 points20 points ago

Definitely safer. Also if you get rocked, not KO'd but just dazed and hit hard, in MMA you can at least fall down and wrestle around while your head recovers. In boxing you either go down and lose points or keep it together while still getting the shit kicked out of you in an attempt to recover. Just a brutal sport.

[–]Cybralisk 11 points12 points ago

You get hit like that in MMA thats ussually when the fight is over, boxers take way more damage

[–]Normal_Man 3 points4 points ago

Also no standing counts in MMA. And the ref's are quick to stop the fights and protect the fighters.

[–]AgentVanillaGorilla 2 points3 points ago

MMA is pretty much just better in every way, it seems.

[–]Phallic 1 point2 points ago

I'm a huge fan of both.

If you want to see why people love boxing may I suggest watching any (or all) of the following:

Israel Vazquez v Rafael Marquez (They fought three times. Watch all three)

Diego Corrales v Jose Luis Castillo

Manny Pacquiao v Juan Manuel Marquez (They've fought three times too)

Ali v Frazier III (The Thrilla in Manila)

[–]dbick 1 point2 points ago

I actually prefer boxing just because it's so brutal. Though sometimes I feel a little sick if I see a dude just getting pulverized, especially now that they know so much about concussions and what they do to people later in life.

[–]fodder008 0 points1 point ago

I think a lot of the criticism of boxing is that the athletes train to not make it look like they are really taking a pounding. Hiding how bad you are getting hit is how you get the concussions on top of other concussions that can cause some of the really lasting damage.

[–]Obliviousobi 8 points9 points ago

MMA glove punches are certainly safer (vs boxing), the way the glove transfers energy to the skull actually causes the brain to bounce around much more.

Science of bare-knuckle vs MMA glove vs boxing glove

[–]albatross5000 2 points3 points ago

Maybe when it comes from fist hits ... but in MMA you go head to knee, head to forearm. Much worse than a punch, no? Heel to head, as hard as the fighter can kick? Not sure how that's "safer than boxing". Very much doubt that.

[–]LoftyDog 1 point2 points ago

In boxing, it's the repeated hard punches to the head that will cause problems. With the gloves, you'll see it happen over and over throughout the fight. If you took a knee to the face, it may do more damage to the face but not the brain.

[–]spermracewinner 0 points1 point ago

It's safer because one area of your body doesn't receive all the punishment. A lot of fights or won by tap outs from submission holds.

[–]spermracewinner 0 points1 point ago

It's safer because one area of your body doesn't receive all the punishment. A lot of fights or won by tap outs from submission holds.

[–]fuckinscrub 2 points3 points ago

Then it bounces some more when it hits the ground.

[–]jules_serenityPi 1 point2 points ago

Exactly. Imagine if we had technology to take Real-time MRI in slow motion. Safety standards in sports would increase dramatically.

[–]degoban 0 points1 point ago

this is why it's so stupid.

[–]the_satch -3 points-2 points ago

I saw that episode of Mythbusters too.

[–]realigion 0 points1 point ago

Uhh... what? You learned from Mythbusters that getting fucking railed in the side of the face causes your brain to bounce around?

This is basic, basic, basic knowledge for just about everyone, I thought. It certainly is for any high school or above athletes of any contact sport.

[–]the_satch 0 points1 point ago

It was a joke you fuckhead. Albiet not a very good one. But good looking out; educating me with that common knowledge nonsense. I truly wouldn't have known otherwise. You have my humble gratitude.

[–]realigion 0 points1 point ago

I can see how that would've been hilarious in real life actually. I just couldn't get the inflection over text. Have an up vote.

[–]eyecite 20 points21 points ago

Anyone familiar with this fight? Did the dude go down?

[–]vjnods 35 points36 points ago

It's Donaire vs. Montiel and yes, he did go down.

[–]eyecite 62 points63 points ago

I thought so, it looks like he dislocated his face.

[–]MrBroly 12 points13 points ago

Mom's spaghetti

[–]whycantirememberthis 1 point2 points ago

It's okay, I got the joke.

[–]AliasHandler 1 point2 points ago

Mom's spaghetti

[–]permanentjaun 6 points7 points ago

And they made/allowed the guy stand back up and fight to take one more solid hit to the head. Sucks.

[–]silver_medalist 7 points8 points ago

Terrible refereeing. Should have stopped it. Montiel didn't even have his hands up after the count.

[–]bryan_sensei 2 points3 points ago

Damn, at 1:05 his legs are just flailing...not good. That guys brain got wrecked.

[–]TylerKeys 17 points18 points ago

I'm pretty sure you can see the shape of his face in his sweat as it flies off to the side.

[–]risklight 18 points19 points ago

i thought that was his soul getting knock out

[–]lol_catd 8 points9 points ago

I saw that too! It's like the ghost of his face flying away....

[–]radiantwave 16 points17 points ago

Out of curiosity, does the skull deform/squish when it takes a hit like this?

[–]nasher168 12 points13 points ago

Not permanently-it would (hopefully!) be within the skull's elastic limit. But yes, the skull will deform at least slightly. If bone was rigid, it would splinter and break very easily.

[–]Salva_Veritate 10 points11 points ago

Everything deforms and squishes when it gets hit, even things that retain their shape post-impact. Even glass marbles deform a bit when you drop them on hard floor.

[–]Pizzaman99 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of animation class.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squash_and_stretch

[–]NickelFish 15 points16 points ago

I think he bent it. For some reason, the sound of dubstep fills the silence.

[–]eamantite 9 points10 points ago

Fuck, his little nose is flappin' in the wind

[–]n-some 7 points8 points ago

The skull goes and the skin follows.

[–]Dubbys 7 points8 points ago

[–]Cybralisk 5 points6 points ago

Thats just a left hook from a guy thats not even that big, imagine getting rocked like that by tyson in his prime.

[–]WhatDoesYourHeadSay 10 points11 points ago

So much ouch.

[–]ThinkinFlicka 6 points7 points ago

[–]Dubbys 2 points3 points ago

Look at his nose... It's like rubber.

[–]Goddamn_Batman 2 points3 points ago

Skeleton starts moving, then a fraction of a second later the meat catches up. That guy needs some advil.

His face looks like it's made out of Play-doh.

[–]realfuzzhead 1 point2 points ago

[–]MrTurkle 0 points1 point ago

And that is one very good reason why you keep your hands up.

[–]illmanored 1 point2 points ago

[–]your_inner_monologue 0 points1 point ago

Its amazing watching his face catch up with his skull.

[–]burningsok 0 points1 point ago

it's brought to you by Everlast!

[–]T0PHER911 1 point2 points ago

I watched this for too long.

[–]GrilledCheeser -1 points0 points ago

It is oddly satisfying.

[–]jabacherli -1 points0 points ago

That's my boy Nonito! I went to high school with him. He skipped graduation to start his professional career. He will supplant Pacquaio as the top Filipino boxer in the world.

[–]neeto85 0 points1 point ago

It reminds me of those pictures of Basset Hounds shaking off water.

[–]reggiemonster 0 points1 point ago

That's exactly how I feel when the high hits me.

[–]Henwhee 0 points1 point ago

holy shit

[–]GrilledCheeser 0 points1 point ago

[–]thewrz 0 points1 point ago

I love how the hair has to catch up with the skull.

[–]gabrieloc 0 points1 point ago

and thats why i'm always told to keep my hands up...

[–]Sporka 0 points1 point ago

You can imagine what the brain would look like on the inside of his skull as this happens...

[–]SerDelta 0 points1 point ago

Wow. His skull rotated so fast that his face was left behind.

[–]brazilliandanny 0 points1 point ago

That guys body was trying to catch up to his face.

[–]voguole 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a whole lot o' brain damage.

[–]enzobelmont 0 points1 point ago

[–]eat_fish 0 points1 point ago

K-FUCKIN-O'd

[–]CeeBmata 0 points1 point ago

Knocked that smirk right off of his face.

[–]IdleJamerican1 0 points1 point ago

This is the sole reason I buy any fight night game, Every knock out contains a scene like the one above.

[–]__d-_-b__ 0 points1 point ago

His face - his face- his face is all over the place.

[–]fourpac 0 points1 point ago

The most common career-ending injury for boxers is broken hands. That's why boxing gloves were invented, to protect the hands, not the face. Boxing gloves are horrible for your opponents head because you can punch so much harder with them on.

[–]KayakNinja 0 points1 point ago

It's like watching a Jello mold of a human head getting punched.

[–]tmlwry 0 points1 point ago

dont wanna be a boxer anymore...thats for sure

[–]syzbo 0 points1 point ago

BRAIN.

[–]seth11111 0 points1 point ago

That looks jarring.

[–]texastopher01 -1 points0 points ago

Is that cesar Chavez junior throwing the hook

[–]FrostByt 0 points1 point ago

I really wish I could see this in reverse.

[–]Jibber_Fight 0 points1 point ago

Jeez. That's just not right. I'm going to be a Sally and say that that's just irresponsible "sport."

[–]whaiwhut 0 points1 point ago

You can almost see his face in the sweat that flies of it. Shiiiiit.

[–]jazvecina 0 points1 point ago

notice how the sweat particles matches his face.

[–]FuckingTornadoes 0 points1 point ago

Right in the brain damage.

[–]F-That -1 points0 points ago

Taking a hit like this one too many times will make you go full retard.

[–]spicy_jose -5 points-4 points ago

Keep your hands up! Shit man.

[–]scorpion990 2 points3 points ago

I'm sure he'd appreciate boxing advice from you. I really am.

[–]spicy_jose -3 points-2 points ago

You must be really fun to watch any kind of sporting event with. NO SARCASM.

But really, I hate you as a person.
