Science is like leaving some food out for the cat, noticing that it's been taken, trying again with better aparatus, seeing that the animal--assuming it is an animal--weighs as much as a cat, and left behind black fur, etc, etc, etc. There are no flashlights in science, just lots of data.

I was confused for a moment when I read that the scientist was looking for a black cat that was holding a flashlight.

This has been reposted so many times.

My first time seeing it. Better than a fake Bill O'Reilly quote.

Was just saying.

Science is like being locked in a black room, but instead of looking for a black cat that may or may not be there, we search the walls for the light switch....

I don't much care for the jab at philosophy.

[–]Meatslinger 0 points1 point ago

I did not feel so much that it was a jab. In the comparison to philosophy, the black cat exists. It is just waiting to be found, through slightly random and nonscientific methods. As soon as somebody starts using scientific methods to locate the animal, it is called science.
