So we're at a table in Pompei, it's very warm and an Italian group next to us is having fruit salad. It's this giant bowl filled with watermelon slices and other fruits, and it looks delicious (not to mention appropriate for the weather). They are served by a server who doesn't really look much, he doesn't smile to the customers or anything.

Meanwhile, we're seated at a table by some waiter who's obviously practiced his manners, but it takes forever for him to come back. The younger guy eventually "steals" the table and the old one gets all pissy about it, but we thank the young man for it.

Meanwhile there is an American group of tourists sitting down next to us, served by the old man once again. The food somehow gets to them, and they too see the huge fruit salad the Italians are having.

Come dessert time, both of us order fruit salad, thinking we're gonna get the watermelon slices. The Americans are served first by the old man, he comes and plonks down a couple of plastic cups with a little bit of fruit inside and leaves. So the Americans are pretty ticked off at that and are wondering what the hell is the other order. The young man then comes along to our table with the same platter of watermelon slices and fruit that the Italians had. Cue the Americans. Needless to say the tip was generous, and the younger server actually smiled. The Americans did get the slices later though once they pointed out that it was what they wanted.
