Similar thing happened to me when I was 8. Outfielder points at me during warm up and throws the ball to me, Obese 30-something year old guy proceeds to knock me over, grab the ball and run off...to this day still boggles my mind that anyone would do this.

This is what I remember off the top of my head (I'm too lazy to look it up now):

The lady never handed the ball to the kid. The commentators noticed from their announcers' box (or whatever it's called), sent a message to the player that threw the ball to the kid in the first place, and he gave them another signed ball and some other cool stuff.

This one is more recent and blatantly selfish. They said, "If we knew the kid was upset, we would've given the ball to him."
