Seems like a bad place to be standing and taking a picture if a plane is going that way without a pilot and about to crash.

[–]ceejayoz 19 points20 points ago

Judging from the footage of the crash there was no one in the direct flight line. This looks like it was probably taken with a telephoto lens from the ATC tower shown.

[–]A_Suvorov 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, at the end it says the photographer was on the tower.

Telephoto lense

Goose should have flown an F-16. Those canopies blow clear.

[–]boothroyd917 5 points6 points ago

But... but it wasn't Mavrick's fault... :'(

[–]MaverickTopGun 2 points3 points ago

Thanks bud

[–]boothroyd917 1 point2 points ago

Best username ever.

[–]iamagainstit 4 points5 points ago

seriously tho, what kind of shitty canopie doesn't clear.

[–]Cleffer 2 points3 points ago

..and Maverick blamed himself.

[–]Rustysporkman 2 points3 points ago

Wasn't it because of the flatspin that the canopy didn't clear?

[–]Cleffer 1 point2 points ago

My sarcasm has no room for your scientific facts.

Too soon man, too soon

"nothing to see here"

[–]Phreakhead 3 points4 points ago

How would he survive that? Don't parachutes not work at low altitudes?

[–]bilobaman 29 points30 points ago

The ACES II seat catapult rocket generates enough thrust to ensure safe chute deployment at zero airspeed/altitude. The pilot's forward momentum in this crash served to assist in rapid chute deployment and speed retardation. Video describing how pilot error caused crash.

[–]Phreakhead 5 points6 points ago

Wow, awesome. Thanks!

[–]Quintuss 2 points3 points ago

Is it true that pilots can only eject 2 or 3 times in their career because their spine compresses during the rapid acceleration of the ejection? Curious to find out...

[–]TenserTensor 0 points1 point ago

Don't think so. What would happen at the fourth? they get crippled?

[–]Sara_Tonin 0 points1 point ago

I dunno about if they can only do it a certain amount of times, but I do know they often suffer spinal injuries

What an incredibly informative and to the point video! All videos should be like this, wow.. Thanks for the link.

[–]Gildish_Chambino -3 points-2 points ago

What he said.

[–]ceejayoz 9 points10 points ago

Luckily, an ejection seat involves more than just a parachute. Key element: big rocket.

[–]keveready 1 point2 points ago

Why don't I have one of these rocket seats?

[–]pntless 6 points7 points ago

Become a fighter jet pilot.

Acquire rocket seat.

Hope to never use rocket seat.

[–]Gildish_Chambino 4 points5 points ago

They do, maybe not amazingly, but they usually do. That particular ejection seat even works at zero velocity and zero above ground altitude.

[–]fullstalltakeoff 0 points1 point ago

ACES II are rated zero-zero for this and other situations. It's amazing the amount of things that have to happen in sequential order in less than a second for this to work.

I can't be the only one who gets this sense of nausea when they see airshow disasters.

I'm not even calling this a "disaster," as some of the comments imply everybody was okay, but I hate when these things happen. Same with car races and any event for entertainment purposes. It just so happens that when things go wrong in a musical, it's usually not a lot worse than a bad review.

Not condemning airshows. I just hate that sick feeling I get when I see these things.

[–]DogiojoeXZ 0 points1 point ago

Everybody was okay because he flew away from the crowd. I was there when he crashed. I was standing up against the orange fence and he was heading straight towards the crowd. It could have been a lot worse.

[–]iamagainstit 1 point2 points ago

poor thunderbird.

[–]PpaSmrf -1 points0 points ago

He didn't adjust his altimeter like he was supposed to when he was doing pre flight. He looked down at his instruments when he came out of the split S and thought he was higher that he really was and pulled up to late and stalled.

[–]hobsonUSAF 0 points1 point ago

Thats not what caused the incident. He incorrectly calculated how much altitude he needed for recovery of a split-s.

Also, he did not stall. A stall is where you are flying too slow to generate lift.
