Ah man, Buzz Killington here, I asked the resident ex-Disney Intern/BF if this ever happened while he was working and he said "Oh of course, as Disney staff you are required to do things like that." I guess part of the training you are told to call every little girl Princess and every boy Prince.

On a positive note though, I'm not sure he had to ask for autographs and it seems as though that is a man who genuinely enjoys his job / making kids feel great about themselves. Which is the important part.

The thing about reposts is that there are more than 50,000,000 people browsing Reddit and each post that makes it to the front page only gets around 5,000,000 views, so regardless of how much people will complain that it's a repost, the upvotes speak for themselves and prove that there are people who haven't seen it before. If you've seen it before that's cool, you don't have to upvote it or anything, but don't be a dick and complain about it.

while that is fair enough, I have still not heard a valid argument against a repost tag that would allow one to filter out reposts if so desired. Like the NSFW filter on RES.

For those that only want to see OC, I am sure some people would forgo 'catching' a good repost the 3rd time around that they have not seen if it means that they don't have to sift through hundreds of old jokes to get there.

That sounds like a good method in theory but here are a few problems - Wouldn't that only apply if the link was exactly the same? What if the pic was the same but uploaded onto a different hosting site?

What if you saw it on another site that wasn't reddit?

What about if the filter ended up blocking some of the greatest posts/pics/links you would personally rate ever but it was technically a repost and you hadn't seen the first time it was posted? Then you would never get to see the potential content.

I think some people might we willing to potentially miss the odd piece of content rather than sift through piles of the things that get reposted very very often.

I shall speak for myself now and say that I would rather not see a single piece of content that is technically a repost regardless of if I have seen it or not. I just want to see OC. It is impossible.

(you know I was looking for a random example that I have seen quite often in the past, only to find out that it was posted yesterday)

When is something a repost? When someone else has posted it before.

That means, if you make it yourself, it's not a repost. If you got it from somewhere else on the internet, it is a repost.

If you're going to install a "original content only" filter, you're not going to see many blue links, I'm afraid.

Correct. But the links that I do see will be novel to the internet - and therefore myself.

I would like quality not quantity - and my measure of quality is originality. If it is from elsewhere and it is not news I am not interested. If it is new then I am interested in all the subreddits respective content.

I would not mind even only 5 blue links - so long as they are novel, then I can brush up on what new things the internet has to offer, and move on with my day and perhas try be productive ;)

comfortable in the knowledge that nothing new has escaped my eye!

It would be opt in only obviously so it would not affect those browsing as they are currently, with perhaps some algorithms to determine how many people have 'reported' it as a repost to determine its repost rating before filtering, but just nice to have such a feature.

The new tab is full of reposts. I would suggest that an implemented definition might be something that has been posted to reddit before, not just anywhere else on the web. That way you could have somethink like that karmadecay bot that points out reposts doing some checking.

Coupled perhaps with a 'report as repost' button that has some clever algorithm to determine how many people report it as a repost and give it some kind of probability of repost ranking. And maybe cross reference with the bot to determine veracity of clicks to filter out people clicking it for everything and being a nuisance.

I am by no means a programmer or coder or have any idea how this works, but compared to the other anti-gaming/spamming/etc algorithms that this site employs it does not seem beyond the realm of possibility to have work. I am not sure how NSFW tags are implimented but I am sure there is some way to stop wrong tags, the proof may be easier with exposed tits, but karmadecay works well enough to spot the big repost offenders.

Which is what I gathered from the first two paragraphs of your post.

There is a Reddit bot that can recognise an image by its URL and won't let you post the same image twice, but thanks to IMGur, reposting is made easy. A recognition based on the shape and colours (like Google images can recognise images, or karmadecay can. That could work, but I'd only have to make one panel of my rage comic have a bright yellow background, and it would be "different" enough.

Up and down votes are already filtering content enough. Reddit is the frontpage of the internet, not the hipster's guide to the galaxy. In other words, the purpose of Reddit is to have people up and downvote content and filter it in that way that the posts people like best get attention, the ones people don't like, don't.

Frontpage of the internet: with lots of stuff from the last few years constantly rehashed in case you missed it the first few times around. Hipsters guide to the galaxy would be wonderful, I don't see why the idea of only wanting to see novel content on the site is seen as such a bad thing. Theres millions of users - surely there are enough interesting ideas/pictures/thoughts between us to not have to rehash. And if there is not enough novel content, then I can get something else done while I wait...or turn off the repost filter.

I was just at Magic kingdom and they now have dedicated workers with erasable autograph books that go around and ask every 'princess' for there autograph. Erasable meaning its a gel looking surface that I am sure erases so Disney does not toss away the regular books
