TIL I have never given any thought to what comes immediately before any scene in a movie.

This is rather cool.

[–]searingsky 54 points55 points ago

I advise you to watch the extras on the Shining DVD/BD

Watching Jack Nicholson transform into his role is amazing

[–]f3nd3r 16 points17 points ago

It's not really funny, but I think it's very cool too.

[–]ryankrush 11 points12 points ago

I don't think it's meant to be funny. Seeing him jumping and screaming to himself "you're an ax murderer!! I'm gonna fucking kill you!!" before they say "action" is why he is my favorite actor of all time. Simply because of this movie.

[–]f3nd3r 22 points23 points ago

This is /r/funny....

[–]sammew 3 points4 points ago

Maybe the idea of seeing how people act behind the scenes is generally unfunny yet interesting, but in this case, Jack actually is being funny.

[–]ryankrush 0 points1 point ago

ok? i didnt put it here

[–]f3nd3r 0 points1 point ago

Sterilize yourself, please.

[–]ryankrush 0 points1 point ago

all im saying is if you actually watch the behind the scenes i do not think he was trying to get laugh IMO

[–]f3nd3r 0 points1 point ago

Power cycle your brain please, you're making even less sense.

[–]telemil 2 points3 points ago

Or in 'One Flew Over the Cukoo's' Nest' where he meets the warden. Improvised. Actually the guy playing the warden is the real warden of the hospital, and is just asked to treat Nicholson as any other patient.

[–]ryankrush 0 points1 point ago

totally awesome

[–]ansate 43 points44 points ago

More horror movies should do blooper reels too. There's gotta be some hilarious shit that happens behind the scenes.

[–]Brettersson 7 points8 points ago

the bloopers that are in the end credits to the original version of The Fog are fantastic

[–]unsilentninja 103 points104 points ago

doing his "fuck up that door" psyche up dance. in his head, you will only hear "fuck this fucking door, fuck this fucking door, FUCK THIS FUCKING DOOR"

[–]BigGreenYamo 12 points13 points ago

He really does look ready to rock & roll on that door.

[–]thirt13n 68 points69 points ago

He has to pee.

[–]OperationJack 201 points202 points ago

Why else would he be trying to get into the bathroom?

[–]50shadesofcock 70 points71 points ago

[–]OperationJack 32 points33 points ago

Thank you, thank you. I'd like to thank Captain Picard, my friends, and most importantly my sister, who at times locked me out of the bathroom long enough to feel the need to get an ax and cut down the door.

[–]50shadesofcock 17 points18 points ago

Good acceptance speech, if a little rapey towards the end.

[–]OperationJack 2 points3 points ago

My apologies, my sister and I shared a bathroom. Like most siblings we fought over time to get ready. I felt that I should get to use it first since I didn't take long, she felt she should get to use it first since she has the most to do. She'd wake up early and lock me out of the bathroom around the time I'd wake up and have to take my morning piss.

TL;DR: Bitch of a sister prevented me from taking my morning piss.

[–]mazinaru -1 points0 points ago

Piss on the door.

[–]lifesaber 3 points4 points ago

Pissing on her bed works twice as well!

[–]hardtogetaname -1 points0 points ago

why not just piss on her to wake her up to go to the bathroom to lock the door to clear herself so you cant get in and needs to pee then...

[–]iBrick -1 points0 points ago

I'm trying to read his lips, but i keep failing. What is he saying?

[–]50shadesofcock 0 points1 point ago

I think it's "congratulations" but with a heavy english accent. probably why I could read it and not you :P

[–]SeedyOne 12 points13 points ago

More excellent .gifs from The Shining.

[–]Haasts_Eagle 15 points16 points ago

What scene was this one in?

[–]AgeMarkus 3 points4 points ago

Screw the last one.

[–]SeedyOne 3 points4 points ago

Worth the wait!

[–]TitsAndAssMan 2 points3 points ago

What is it of? I am scared!

[–]BusinessCasualty 4 points5 points ago

Nothing really scary, just Jack kind of staring at you, blinking once, then giving you a creepy smile.

[–]TitsAndAssMan 0 points1 point ago

Oh fuck good ahaha :)

[–]miss_taken_identity 18 points19 points ago

I really love that I knew exactly what this was from and that I created the sound of Jack Nicholson giggling in my head. Frigging spectacular. Where the hell did you find this?

[–]open_ur_mind 5 points6 points ago

Here

There's other clips on youtube if you don't want her commentary over the entire thing.

Found a better one here that actually has audio from the scene.

[–]WhoFan 2 points3 points ago

Oh god, it's too late at night to begin watching that. Bookmarked.

[–]iGotChubs4You 0 points1 point ago

I think most all knew where it was from.

[–]miss_taken_identity 0 points1 point ago

fair, but I think my initial giggle was worthwhile. Despite the fact that it was already a classic by the time I was in high school, I recognize that I tend toward things differently than many my age. Then, of course, there's the horror when you realize that people only a few years younger than you have absolutely zero in the way of similar immediate recognition of pop culture.

about 5 minutes in

[–]RzK 5 points6 points ago

Years after this was shot, it was put in GIF form and reposted millions of times on Reddit

[–]mancusod 1 point2 points ago

Oooo! I remember that part! That was fun.

[–]mirmir16 5 points6 points ago

Time for some redrum.

[–]RandomPratt 2 points3 points ago

For people who like this movie, and are interested in Kubrick's ability to fuck with everyone around him, please watch this short film.

it outlines how Kubrick had the set of the Overlook Hotel constructed so that it would be physically impossible for the rooms to be where the audience will have subconsciously mapped out the interior, leaving the audience confused on a very deep level without being able to put their finger on precisely why they felt like that.

the result: what could well have been a schlocky horror flick became a masterpiece of suspense and fear.

[–]shneebs 2 points3 points ago

I dont usually reply but damn that was interesting!

[–]RandomPratt 0 points1 point ago

exactly - I found it far too fascinating not to share... a brilliant documentary on a brilliant mind.

[–]10inchtinch 25 points26 points ago

I'm sorry I may be too young to have seen this scene but would someone please be kind enough to tell me what scene this is?

[–]ivanmarsh 75 points76 points ago

It's Jack Nicholson warming up and getting into character before the "Here's Johnny!", chopping through the door scene in The Shining. If you watch the making of footage from the DVD it's pretty intense. At one point he's chopping at the bed growling "Kill, murder, die!"

I thought the most amazing thing about the footage is that Kubrick, being the genius he was, told everyone on the set to gradually start treating Shelley Duvall more and more like shit as the shooting went on and by the time all hell broke loose in the film she was convinced that everyone hated her. The stress, anxiety and fear she puts on the screen isn't all acting. The interviews with her during the making of footage are kind of horrible. She's physically ill from the stress. They basically mind-fucked her into giving a great performance.

[–]Fanta-stick 35 points36 points ago

Kubrick seems to be a bit of a dick, then

[–]newbill123 24 points25 points ago

Shelly Duvall has performed with method acting techniques with Altman and Allen so it's not as dickish as it may sound. Kubrick was known for his reliance on method acting techniques also. And though he is far more immersive than other directors, this wasn't done sui generis just for this film.

Like a doctor giving the patient a placebo to bring out the best your body has to offer with a mind game, the treatment of her was done in service of the larger goal of making the film. Did she enjoy it? No. Did the people really hate her? Probably not.

Did she say that she learned more while filming The Shining than any other film she worked on? Yes.

[–]LNMagic 6 points7 points ago

How did he prepare HAL 9000 for his role?

[–]RandomPratt 7 points8 points ago

Solitaire.

[–]Para_Salin 0 points1 point ago

Spider bro. Spiders are way more creepy.

[–]bualsvilla 0 points1 point ago

I read somewhere that Malcolm McDowell injured one of his eyes really badly during the filming of A Clockwork Orange and Kubrick just went like "eh, we'll just favor your other eye."

Personally yeah, I think he's kind of a dick.

[–]mousewilliams99 1 point2 points ago

He also broke a rib when he got beat on stage to show he was "cured".

[–]etherama1 6 points7 points ago

[–]bualsvilla 0 points1 point ago

Hey, that's where I read it!

[–]29castles 2 points3 points ago

this is a duh moment for me! read it = reddit

[–]ivanmarsh 0 points1 point ago

You wanna' make an omelet...

[–]ivanmarsh 0 points1 point ago

...And Shelley Duvall seems like a good actress.

[–]Soryen 16 points17 points ago

Also, Jack Nicholson was a volunteer firefighter at the time. At the beginning, they used a prop door, but he swung through it too fast, so the had to switch it to a real solid core door.

[–]Joki9121 -1 points0 points ago

hahahaha that's awesome.

[–]DefinitelyPositive 1 point2 points ago

That's pretty fucking dickish.

[–]Gormkeg_Kegmore 17 points18 points ago

[–]blakeready710 2 points3 points ago

What happens after she slashes his hand?

[–]wazoheat 20 points21 points ago

Why don't you watch the movie? It's kind of long and typing it out would take a while.

[–]blakeready710 0 points1 point ago

Sorry I was just curious as to how that particular scene ends

[–]ErikaLGBT 13 points14 points ago

He puts a bandaid over his boo-boo.

[–]MagoLopez 1 point2 points ago

What a bitch! It's just a door

[–]pyronarwhal 1 point2 points ago

Who keeps a knife in their bathroom?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

My friend. And I did because I forgot it.

[–]pyronarwhal 0 points1 point ago

You forgot your knife in the bathroom?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

A few times yes, ment to take it in my bedroom. Stayed in there for weeks sadly

[–]RandomPratt 5 points6 points ago

you stayed in your bathroom for weeks?

with a knife?

are you okay?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

.... I went in there to take a shower, put the knife on the sink. Forgot it there when I left. It stayed there for weeks. I left after the shower..

[–]RandomPratt 0 points1 point ago

you left a knife unattended in a bathroom?

you monster....

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

Sir, I hope you know I'm talking about my bathroom in my house, no public access. Well not My home, my fathers but what ever.

[–]Space_Ninja 0 points1 point ago

She took the knife into the bathroom. She was trying to get through the window in the scene prior to this one, and had put the knife down on the sink.

[–]pyronarwhal 1 point2 points ago

Oh, that makes more sense. Thanks!

[–]10inchtinch -4 points-3 points ago

Thank you.

Ok now I remember, I watched this with my mom I just couldn't tell what scene it was from the gif

[–]Gleek24601 5 points6 points ago

All work and no play makes jack a dull boy.... How old are you?

[–]10inchtinch 0 points1 point ago

I remember watching the movie with my mom I just couldn't tell what it was by the gif. And I'm fifteen, yeah I know go figure.

[–]superpedo 2 points3 points ago

"Yes he is totally fucked right now. That last hit of PCP did the trick."

[–]TexasAssKicker 1 point2 points ago

You have to give him a break, he did this scene over and over again until the director liked it, which was like 100 or something times over Source: Ripleys Believe It Or Not Records Museum in San Antonio

HERE'S JOHNNY!

[–]coonster 1 point2 points ago

The director, Stanley Kubrick, never heard the "Here's Johnny" line from the Johnny Carson show since he had been living in England for several years. Jack Nicholson made it up on the fly and it almost didn't make the final cut.

[–]Nubies -1 points0 points ago

I don't get it. Where is Johnny?

[–]theytooktomallen 1 point2 points ago

My cousins took our mentally disturbed uncle to this movie in the 70's. Halfway through our uncle started choking the guy in front of him yelling, "I'm going to kill you." I'll bet that guy still tells that story to people.

[–]Fender6187 0 points1 point ago

It's because he's legitimately fucking crazy.

[–]Thatsracist54 0 points1 point ago

Gotta love that sweater the guy walking by is wearing...
