"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

You can bounce on your cane.

You can bounce on your cane.

Now go beat it, genie-less.

[–]ILinkToRelevantXKCDs 20 points21 points ago

[–]Durch 6 points7 points ago

[–]Jigsus 0 points1 point ago

It's bullshit. Eventually the monster goes faster too.

[–]oboewan42 0 points1 point ago

Speaking of which, the original creator of that game found the source code a few years ago, recompiled it so that it runs on modern systems, and put the game up for download on his website for free.

[–]SiddTheNayak 1 point2 points ago

It really is SkiFREE. Hehehe.

[–]ekaceerf 0 points1 point ago

[–]APeacefulWarrior 1 point2 points ago

Wait, people don't know this?

...really?

[–]gonuts4donuts -1 points0 points ago

STIL SO HARD

[–]LocalMadman 41 points42 points ago

Ducktales Woo-ooh!

AAAAAAnd now the theme song is stuck in my head.

[–]i4ybrid 22 points23 points ago

That game was quite hard. I had no idea what a skeleton key was as a kid. I thought it was a key made out of the bones of a person. It kinda creeped me out.

[–]PS3VITA 11 points12 points ago

[–]Marzz 4 points5 points ago

Whaaaat? Capcom and Disney put out a bunch of NES games back in the day, and none of them were really difficult.

Ducktales 1 and 2, Darkwing Duck, Rescue Rangers, The Little Mermaid...

All of them were tremendous amounts of fun but I think of that selection only Darkwing Duck was hard.

Keep in mind this entire thing came from the era of Mega Man and Ultima: Exodus.

[–]tairygreene 8 points9 points ago

it was easy back in the NES days, it's pretty hard when you try to play it now

[–]Geminel 11 points12 points ago

It's amazing how hard a lot of those games are by today's standards. I have no idea how I used to be so fuckin' good at them!

[–]Drazic 0 points1 point ago

It's still pretty easy. It's probably one of the easiest to beat nes platformers I know of.

[–]eamantite 0 points1 point ago

FUCK ninja gaiden

[–]sarnoth 6 points7 points ago

Mickey Mousecapades. That game was difficult as I recall. Damn owl kept stealing Minnie, although I did eventually memorize the first level.

[–]Marzz 3 points4 points ago

That game was HARD AS FUCKING NAILS.... without the warp zones.

[–]sarnoth 1 point2 points ago

whoa whoa whoa, there were warp zones in the game? Can't believe I didn't know that.

[–]DudeGreen 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, they must've gotten complaints and made future Disney games easier...I remember Mickey Mousecapades being really, really hard...Duckstales and such, not so much.

[–]bornmiddleaged 1 point2 points ago

OMG! I hate the owls! And what's up with the unlimited repeat forest level? I could never figure out which tree to go into.

[–]sarnoth 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I think I got past the forest level once or twice ever. I hated that level.

[–]maisnon 1 point2 points ago

I don´t think I ever beat Darkwing Duck, it was really tough! We had both Ducktales and Rescue Rangers aswell, they were great fun, especially the latter (throwing boxes at eachothers face)

[–]Marzz 0 points1 point ago

When I made that post, I had totally forgotten they made a Rescue Rangers 2.

THAT one was hard, too. Way more fun, though. You could run forward with a box for a few steps and it'd blink and you could throw it, and it would do a "wave" pattern and kill anything (save for bosses) in one hit.

[–]kozaruatsea 0 points1 point ago

I beat darkwing duck on halloween of 1993 :) Then I went trick or treating. It was a great night.

[–]Hellisothersheeple 1 point2 points ago

Did you not play Rescue Rangers?

[–]Marzz 0 points1 point ago

Of course I did. Have you gone back and tried to play it lately?

[–]Hellisothersheeple 1 point2 points ago

Fuck no.

[–]Marzz -1 points0 points ago

You really should. It's not as hard as you remember it being. There are some tricky spots but nothing awful. I think the hardest level is the last one by far.

[–]Skeleboar 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, Ducktales and Rescue Rangers are definitely one of the easiest NES games i have played. And they are still really easy, especially Rescue Rangers that makes Super Mario 3D Land look hard.

[–]Nawara_Ven 0 points1 point ago

Darkwing Duck was easy for me because it played so much like Mega Man. Chip n' Dale is impossible.

[–]Marzz 1 point2 points ago

I really, really urge you to go back and try playing Rescue Rangers again.

[–]T3ppic -5 points-4 points ago

Ducktales was harder than any NES Megaman. Keep in mind I remember playing them as a child and didn't patronise people about things that happened less than twenty years ago.

I used a GG for both. Ducktales was legtimate hard. Along with Disney's Magic Kingdom.

[–]step1 0 points1 point ago

Odd. I remember Ducktales as being fairly easy. Maybe I'm thinking Gameboy version? Was that also hard? I had both.

I was also in the local TV station Ducktales fan club and had a badly drawn picture of the boys hanging in the background behind the host. Man, it was a really shit drawing. I was kind of embarrassed that they put it up honestly.

[–]sarnoth 0 points1 point ago

I had no idea what was going on when I played Magic Kingdom. I never could figure out what I was doing. The hardest part for me in Ducktales was the moon stage.

[–]kevinpilgrim 0 points1 point ago

Really? Gotta try it. I remember playing Donald Duck Quack Attack on PS1. Its not that hard but as a fan of Donald Duck (disney sucks nowadays) its quite fun!

[–]MILKB0T 1 point2 points ago

Hast*

Dost or didst*

edit: I added in the other mistakes

[–]ILikeBumblebees 2 points3 points ago

Don't forget the misspelling of "whoa".

[–]for_clarity 2 points3 points ago

Thank you so very much! I am quite relieved that I'm not the only one who cares about that.

[–]Ramb0command0 1 point2 points ago

It truly amazes me that so many people can't figure out sentence structure and cases for early-modern english, or that there even is specific rules. Old english is one thing, but modern english is too simple to not know.

[–]ThwompThwomp 2 points3 points ago

Also, isn't this still considered modern English? (sorry, just saw I've responded to you twice)

[–]Ramb0command0 2 points3 points ago

the archaic conjugations are considered a part of middle english, but it is recent enough that to butcher it like that is just plain not ok

edit: FALSE

[–]ThwompThwomp 3 points4 points ago

(Its late and I'm bored, and I don't mean I start an Internet fight - so no hard feelings your way, after all this is a gaming thread, but I've no games to play right now.)

From what I remember, old English looks essentially like elvish runes and is completely foreign to a modern speaker. Middle English mostly uses familiar Latin characters, but is majority gibberish. Modern English includes shakespeare, and the king James version of the bible. Just glancing at the wikipedia sample texts of each sort of confirms this. The archaic conjugations have just been phased out, although as we're saying any speaker should recognize and be able to use correctly.

Spanish has some similar forms that are generlly considered archaic, but still common in some parts (I.e. Argentina and the vos sois form).

[–]Ramb0command0 1 point2 points ago

I stand corrected. Looks like a reclassification since I was in school (or an ill-informed teacher, which could very well be, I got in trouble for calling Shakespearean english old english and the teacher went on a 15 minute tirade about how it was middle english, and wrote a huge list on the board of works from each period), as when I was in school I was taught the old, which included everything from beowulf to canterbury tales, middle, which covered basically everything up until 1850, and modern english.

[–]ILikeBumblebees 2 points3 points ago

Read a couple of Shakespeare plays and it should be completely obvious:

  • I have

  • Thou hast

  • He/she/it hath

It's excusable to mistake the "thou" form of the second person singular as a formal usage (it's actually the informal, which fell out of use during the 17th century, leaving us using the traditional formal second person pronoun in all contexts), but it's another matter to fail to apprehend the conjugations.

[–]for_clarity 0 points1 point ago

An interesting corollary is the early Quaker preference for thou over you. Plainspeech retained thou as the singular form, partially as a protest against monarchy.

Whereas traditionally, monarchs were referred to as you, the plural, Quakers used the singular thou to imply equality among all men, regardless of status.

[–]ThwompThwomp 0 points1 point ago

i made a post about those conjugations too. I couldn't even read the comic because I kept trying to figure out why he was speaking in i can hz chzbegr talk. I don't know why that really bothers me so much (I'm looking at you, Frog!)

[–]makaveli151 123 points124 points ago

Lookout, I post this last week and little did I know it was a re-post. I was flooded with boo's and hate mail until I deleted it. Just sayin'.

[–]abelcc 94 points95 points ago

I predict this thread will get at least 1000 upvotes, and we all will celebrate how great OP is.

Look at us funny and we'll boo you again

[–]c94 31 points32 points ago

Your predication was 100% accurate.

[–]shazang 12 points13 points ago

117% accurate, actually.

[–]c94 5 points6 points ago

128% now.

[–]Doomshock 4 points5 points ago

142.6% accurate.

[–]makaveli151 1 point2 points ago

Were cool man, were cool. I'll just walk away and pretend like I never seen this thread.

[–]HellsGuardian -2 points-1 points ago

Not just how great OP is, but how great he is for simply posting a Zac Gorman comic right off of this website. I'd have boo'd makaveli151, but not because it was a repost, but because he's just taking something he didn't even make, and presumably putting it into imgur instead of linking zac gorman's actual work.

[–]DerekBrighten 3 points4 points ago

anything Zac makes is reposted constantly

[–]Lots42 3 points4 points ago

Hate mail?

Who cares -that- much?

[–]makaveli151 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I know. One guy posted re-post re-post re-post about 17 times as a comment. And then the PM's started. So I just deleted it. At least someone got some upvotes over it.

[–]Lots42 2 points3 points ago

PMs?

Oh for fuck's sake, Reddit. Private Messages?

[–]Doctor0Doctors 1 point2 points ago

I'm confused. How could you have posted this last week and it already have been a repost if the artist himself only put it online 5 days ago?

[–]makaveli151 0 points1 point ago

I don't know I seen it on The Daily What Geek and posted it. After a few re-post cries and a couple PM's about how I might as well delete it or be shunned I just did. Check it our for yourself though, posted 5 day ago.

[–]Afrotators[S] 54 points55 points ago

[–]etree 10 points11 points ago

I wish I could as good as to be an ARtist

[–]HigherFive 15 points16 points ago

An artist's ability is displayed by the amount of capital letters in their title. Once a year artists can apply for more capital letters to the International Association of Art Critics. They are pitted against several lions for five hours in an arena, and if they manage to paint a satisfactory painting in that time they get to level up. The more capital letters you already have, the more lions you get.

I know a guy who is an ARTIst, but he lost his left leg getting that I. He says it was worth it, but there's no way he's getting the S now unless there's a serious breakthrough in prosthetics soon.

[–]LNMagic 2 points3 points ago

[6]

[–]HellsGuardian -2 points-1 points ago

Wow, you sure showed him for holding shift slightly longer than he meant to. It's not even about grammar at that point. On that note, where's your period at the end of a sentence?

[–]etree 0 points1 point ago

In the grammar dimension, it was too shy. Also read the other reply to me.

[–]xdarq 3 points4 points ago

God damn it, it is HAST, not HATH.

[–]for_clarity 0 points1 point ago

Quite!

[–]HellsGuardian 1 point2 points ago

I support artistic license. If Shakespeare can make up and entire slew of shit, then why can't Zac Gorman?

[–]abdomino 1 point2 points ago

Because Shakespeare already made all of it. There's not a single trope that he could have touched, and didn't.

[–]TwilightShy 6 points7 points ago

Duck Tales! Good times with that Moon level.

[–]Roomy 3 points4 points ago

The nose on the characters by that artist makes me uncomfortable.

I can't stop staring at the massive lump of cancer between his eyes. What is that. It's certainly not what a nose looks like. Why is it dark brown? It's gotta be cancer. That kid has cancer and he's worried about video games.

[–]Altarium 0 points1 point ago

Look up the character Sid from hey Arnold. :)

[–]APiousCultist 0 points1 point ago

Urgh. 90s cartoons and their penchant for grotesque art and weird noses. Ren and Stimpy... Cow and Chicken... I guess Spongebob counts a lot of the time.

[–]HellsGuardian 0 points1 point ago

Not really 90's, but also Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. A common enough joke to become notable was that Billy's nose was awfully misshapen and weird, and that Mandy didn't even have a nose.

[–]abdomino 1 point2 points ago

Mandy didn't even have a nose.

Neither did Voldemort. What is it with evil people foregoing their schnozz?

[–]IamGrimReefer 2 points3 points ago

for me it was, I wanna be hammer brother mario in super mario 3

[–]SolidCake 0 points1 point ago

DUCK TALES.. WOO HOO

[–]MistarGrimm 2 points3 points ago

Was this game considered hard? Honest question.

I beat it quite often, then again, I played it so much too.

[–]Trebek007 4 points5 points ago

Worth it. That game was so hard.

[–]mkicon 5 points6 points ago

No way man.

Ducktales was one of those "Rent it overnight and beat it by the next day" games.

[–]step1 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, I don't know why people think that game was hard. I could be just not remembering it correctly, but I thought that you could pretty much just bounce around on the cane and make it through most levels like that.

[–]Himntor 1 point2 points ago

[–]Devotia 0 points1 point ago

[–]Mharbles 0 points1 point ago

Still couldn't beat ninja turtles with game genie..

[–]caspissinclair 0 points1 point ago

I only beat it years later with Nesticle (why name it that?) and save states. The Shredder is disappointingly easy.

[–]sarnoth 0 points1 point ago

I think they made a Genesis emulator called the Genecyst as well.

[–]Dickvechkin 0 points1 point ago

Genie pls

[–]HashBR 0 points1 point ago

Best. Video. Game. Soundtrack. Ever.

[–]spider-tongue 0 points1 point ago

I cry myself to sleep because I will never be as talented as Zac Gorman.

[–]Axelnomad 0 points1 point ago

I used game genie on every game because I felt it made the games play more consistently without having to wiggle them around and shit

[–]MrSuitMan 0 points1 point ago

I was expecting the kid to say something like "Big head mode"

[–]Random_Tangent 0 points1 point ago

Ducktales was one of the only NES games I could beat as a kid.

[–]Cartossin 0 points1 point ago

I beat duck tales before I turned 9. It wasn't hard. (2 as well)

[–]Kustumkyle 0 points1 point ago

Only time i ever use(d) game genie is when blowing on the cartridges doesn't make the games work. For some reason, they work better when plugged into game genie.

[–]Kirby420_ 0 points1 point ago

That's because the Game Genie's game cartridge input slot had more robust pins that would cut through the accumulated dust on the game cartridge pins that would foul up the pins in the NES' connector, it also had a slightly thicker PCB for the pins that inserted into the NES' input slot compared to a regular game cartridge, so the console's pins were shoved farther in and had increased spring tension, making better contact with the console's pins as well.

That's also the reason that the console would stop working without the Game Genie after a long time of using it, because the pins got bent too far in inside the console's input slot and could no longer even make contact with the pins on the game cartridge.

[–]Kustumkyle 0 points1 point ago

huh, good to know, thanks!

[–]Mekroth 1 point2 points ago

*Hast and *dost. Conjugation, people!

[–]Trevsweb 0 points1 point ago

Enter 100 character code to continue.

[–]Radiant_Waves 0 points1 point ago

Ducktales is one of my favorite NES games, but it is also one of the easiest.

[–]rychild 0 points1 point ago

ha ducktails on nintendo was the first game I ever beat (sans game genie). When I found you could pogo over spikes by pressing a+b my lil mind was blown.

[–]Careless_Con 0 points1 point ago

Why am I such a fan of gif comics in which only certain panels have motion?

[–]HiImTed 0 points1 point ago

where can I pay money to see the rest of this story?

[–]jonthemonn 0 points1 point ago

Where was he when dark souls came out?

[–]thegreatwhitemenace 0 points1 point ago

people 50 years in the future will look back at this cartoon style oddly

[–]Drago12 0 points1 point ago

This guy paid me a visit during Ninja Gaiden 2...

[–]Dave_Labels 0 points1 point ago

I fucking love Ducktales.

[–]Hawkmoon333 0 points1 point ago

This is pretty much every guy I know circa 1990. Nostalgia..overwhelming...me! Gaa!

[–]EvadableMoxie 0 points1 point ago

Seriously? Game genie to beat Duck-tails?

I mean... I can see Battletoads or something but what kind of noob can't beat duck-tails without game genie?

[–]I_Am_A_Pumpkin 0 points1 point ago

I read this three times before I realised the second frame was animated...

[–]roadhou5 0 points1 point ago

The kids just not surprised by this genie at all hes concerened about is beating duck tails true gamer right there

[–]AntiTheory 0 points1 point ago

Super Mario World:

DD32-6DAD "Start and stay invincible most of the time"

What the fuck is that even supposed to mean? And yes, I did memorize the code.

[–]xXFluttershy420Xx 0 points1 point ago

back when games actually took dedication to beat

[–]brysoncorley 0 points1 point ago

I used the game genie for ducktails for the infinite cane bounce

[–]forever_stalone 0 points1 point ago

Duck tales was easy.

[–]proj3ctmac 0 points1 point ago

Was expecting battletoads for some reason.

[–]Sylocat 0 points1 point ago

I was about to ask if this was an actual ad, until I saw the punchline.

Also, eternally relevant.

[–]thesoundofonehandfap 0 points1 point ago

You're a pussy if you couldn't beat Ducktales

[–]eidaxa 0 points1 point ago

Story of my life with Rugrats Royal Ransom for Ps2

[–]Nebakanezzer 0 points1 point ago

fuck that, that is a completely legitimate wish, that game was hard as shit.

this is also coming from someone who's beaten lion king AND aladin on genesis AND cool spot and ichy and scratchy on SNES

edit. I've now ruined the word "and" after reading that back to myself

[–]ruca360 0 points1 point ago

OMG DUCKTAILS!

[–]zerocrypt 0 points1 point ago

These new comics I've been seeing are awesome. Bravo, good sir.

[–]Awkward_Pingu 0 points1 point ago

I had one of those, for not very long. Dog chewed it to pieces. I did have a friend that got the monthly code books, those were awesome.

[–]Milkthiev 0 points1 point ago

I was not a great gamer but Duck Tales was easy as shit.

Graphics were very impressive for NES though.

[–]vaendryl 0 points1 point ago

as I kid I always mispronounced and misinterpreted the name 'game genie', as genie is dutch for 'genius' that what I went with...

[–]futsel 0 points1 point ago

In his defense: Ducktales were actually pretty hard.

[–]lvytn 0 points1 point ago

Repost.

[–]GenkiElite 0 points1 point ago

All cheats unlocked. Now let me piss on your memory module and corrupt fuck your game forever!!

[–]progerialover69 0 points1 point ago

Which duck game is it where you have a plunger gun and you can jump on them when they get stuck to the wall. It was made for Sega

[–]MrBurd 0 points1 point ago

I never actually played DuckTales, just turned on the game and listened to the main menu theme for hours.

[–]JarekBloodDragon 0 points1 point ago

The mystical repost

[–]Bipolarruledout 0 points1 point ago

So how do you use a game genie with a ROM?

[–]dhingus 0 points1 point ago

one of my first games, never got past level 4. that damn buzzsaw thing.

[–]TinFoilWizardHat 0 points1 point ago

Seriously. Fuck that game.

[–]Stoney191 0 points1 point ago

the mystical game genie is gaben

[–]pilif 0 points1 point ago

Duck Tales is the only game I was able to beat as a child. From that I gather that it's just way too easy.

OTOH - I managed to get up to the second to last boss in Zelda 2 (the one just before Dark Link) - and when I try nowadays, the farthest I come is up until the first blue Knucklehead.

[–]mrducky78 0 points1 point ago

I want to ask him...

Where the fuck are my line blocks?

[–]MacroJackson 0 points1 point ago

MVP sure bulked up.

[–]xMatter 1 point2 points ago

repost motha fucka

[–]AdrianBrony 5 points6 points ago

reposts are like reruns. they're for people who don't spend 24/7 watching reddit.

[–]SketchNbeans -1 points0 points ago

Christ, if reddit was a graveyard then the posts would still be warm when we dig them up and wave them around again.

[–]FecalFunBunny 0 points1 point ago

While we all are gangbang skullfucking them.

[–]Wormy_____McSquirmey -1 points0 points ago

Lol at all the people who think you meant game shark

[–]tairygreene 2 points3 points ago

all 1 person?

[–]Wormy_____McSquirmey -1 points0 points ago

The average redditor in /r/gaming cannot possibly understand that there was a precursor to the Game Shark.

[–]weasel-like 0 points1 point ago

Ducktales? Seriously? I'd understand Marble Madness or Battle Toads, or even Ninja Turtles 1, but Ducktales was actually pretty easy.

[–]Kirby420_ 1 point2 points ago

Marble Madness.

Oh god that game.

I need to walk away from my PC now because I'm getting mad thinking about that god forsaken game.

Also gonna be playing it on Emu in about 10 minutes now.

[–]sarnoth 1 point2 points ago

Marble madness was one of the most infuriating games on the NES.

[–]weasel-like 0 points1 point ago

Even with Game Genie, and infinite lives and all that, I STILL could never beat it. I don't know how much bending pressure I put my poor NES controllers through over the years from playing that fucking game!

[–]Clovyn -1 points0 points ago

Gameshark.

Less chat. More chomp.

[–]ThwompThwomp -3 points-2 points ago

You'd think a genie would know how to conjugate his verbs correctly. One can only wish (ba-dum).
