No matter how many times I tell my boyfriend that I crochet, he always asks "what are you knitting this time?" According to most men, if there is yarn, it is knitting.

Knitting stretches more. It's made up of lots of little vertical Vs (are you wearing a t-shirt? It is knit. Stretch it out and you can see all the little Vs. Pretty much every garment that stretches (which doesn't contain elastic or somesuch, like stretchy jeans) is knit. Otherwise it's woven). Crochet is denser.

There are, of course, different knitting patterns that aren't just stockinette stitch (the stitch pattern that results in just the Vs on one side and bumps on the other), but... you can still tell the difference if you know what to look for.

Jumping on the previous person's comment, knitting is literally a series of consecutive rows of loops, where as crochet is also pulling loops through loops, but crochet does an extra wrap around one active stitch at a time. Knitting generally has many "live" stitches going at one time (on the left needle) that will be worked and moved over to the right needle (opposite if you are left-handed).

The easiest way is that crochet tends to look like it's made of circles and knitting looks like it's made of v's. Crocheted garments tend to either be thick or very open and knitting tends to be more uniform. This is a VERY broad generalization. But yes, in a split second I can tell whether something is knit or crocheted, it doesn't take long to see the difference when you're learning it.

Interestingly and unrelated, most t-shirts are machine knitted. Look at the stitch pattern on your t-shirt. See all the little V's? :D
