Prediction for the next election: Boris is the new PM solely due to the Olympics. Zip wire and now this. What a legend!

[–]Krasinet 8 points9 points ago

He's probably the most loved politician we have. If he runs for PM, he's in, definitely.

[–]tangfest 4 points5 points ago

He'll be like the new Berlusconi of London in terms of the quotes and actions he undertakes aka Zip Wire

[–]AnnieIWillKnowUnited Kingdom 7 points8 points ago

It's not like he could do a worse job than any of the others.

[–]Degradable 2 points3 points ago

I just love him because he's human. He makes mistakes and isn't scared to disagree with everyone (even the PM). We need more politicians who truly have their own views and aren't scared to say them.

I'd rather vote for someone who's honest and may have different opinions, than someone who says all the right things, but I have no idea what they really want.

Are you kidding? Boris is a cunning, cunning guy - the loving bozo thing is an act. He's been using the mayorship to manoeuvre himself into a position to usurp Cameron; see "stop bashing the bankers" and his schmoozing up to Murdoch. The thing about his position is that it's a good platform to be seen from with few actual ramifications - he can do these things, and then count on their support later without any actual ramifications. Look at what the Conservatives have done: Brown's plan was to focus on getting the economy back on its feet, and then cutting the deficit, and under Brown we were powering out of recession, like the US is. As soon as the Conservatives got in, they focussed on making cuts to decrease the deficit, and we've been shrinking ever since. You just can't deny it - unless you're rich, the Conservatives are not who you want to vote for.

Boris is a genius, he studied classics and thinks Cameron is an intellectual light weight, the bumbling fool is all an act. I'm not Tory but Boris would make a good PM.

[–]TheStarkReality 0 points1 point ago

He's a good politician - as PM, he would wreck the country. My only hope is that when the Tories inevitably get their second term -sigh-, he turfs out Osborne, Gove, and Lansley.

[–]Got_WilkUnited Kingdom 0 points1 point ago

I think Osbourne will be gone in the next reshuffle personally, the latest economy figures were a bit of a disaster!

[–]TheStarkReality 0 points1 point ago

All the economy figures that Osborne's been responsible for have been a disaster.

[–]Got_WilkUnited Kingdom 0 points1 point ago

Well yes, but the latest ones in particular were appalling. He's had long enough in charge now to have got things going in the right direction.

I don't know about you but I'm also rather bored of them saying "it's all he last governments' fault not ours" after 2 years that doesn't wash with me anymore.

[–]Degradable 1 point2 points ago

Agree with the fact Boris is in a position where he can't be held responsible for things. Don't agree it's all an act. Maybe sometime he plays up to it, but look through his political career. He's made mistakes which no one could have predicted would result in him becoming popular.

Really don't want to get into a political debate... but:

Double dip recession would have happened no matter what we did. Are you ignoring the imminent break up of the Euro? No matter what we did, we would not be in some stable phase of growth. I'm honestly surprised you think Brown was doing well with the economy. Yes, the US is moving out of recession, but let's not kid ourselves that it's stable. As soon as the Euro reaches boiling point, the US is coming down with it.

Financial markets are linked so closely now, you're going to see at least one more financial crisis, it's just a matter of damage limitation.

tl;dr: Boris is a legend. Everyone's fucked.

[–]ohanlom4 1 point2 points ago

I cam here to say what a complete bumbling idiot he is, but after reading your point I know see his appeal. He is different to the other combed over, shit talking robots. And we do nee more real people like him in politics.

[–]Degradable 0 points1 point ago

Louise Mensch is another example of a politician I disagree with on a load of topics, but respect because she says what she believes in. It's a shame she's just stepped down.

[–]red157 29 points30 points ago

Poor Cameron. He's done exactly what he was programmed to do back when he was just a jumble of latex and computer parts and now he's going to be replaced by a bumbling, flawed model.

It's those flaws that make him appear to be human, David.

[–]space_paradox 4 points5 points ago

Wait, does Boris really have a chance of becoming prime minister?

[–]RealSourLemonade 9 points10 points ago

no.

[–]Degradable 3 points4 points ago

The polls say very, very differently. It'll be interesting to see after the Olympic buzz dies down.

[–]CubejamWales 1 point2 points ago

He has always been popular. Especially so when he has presented/appeared on the comedy quiz show "Have I Got News For You".

[–]anaalius 0 points1 point ago

probably wouldnt have become mayor with out that popularity from the show too.

[–]RealSourLemonade 0 points1 point ago

Which polls are these? Also how many people entered these polls? His idiot act will ensure he doesnt become PM.

[–]Degradable 1 point2 points ago

YouGov do polls, so does ICM. Numbers differ, from thousands to tens of thousands. They have a very high success rate predicting winners of elections and party leaders.

The one I was referring to showed that the Conservatives would still be below Labour in the polls if Boris was PM, but far higher than they currently are with David Cameron.

If you're interested, a good site to monitor opinion polls is: http://ukpollingreport.co.uk/

[–]RealSourLemonade 1 point2 points ago

There is an article on that website about halfway down(?) about Boris, my opinion tends to agree with this segment

'On the other hand, being seen as a bit of a buffoon is not necessarily on the job description of PM. Would something that seems like a wizzard prank in a hypothetical opinion poll seem rather less funny in an actual election? We don’t know.''

I dont think polls can be used to summarise how well a leader is doing, especially as most people vote for a party not a politician, although for a party they can be pretty accurate(?).

Do you think Boris could be a good primeminister?

[–]Degradable 1 point2 points ago

It's an interesting question. I think he could actually end up being PM. It's a scary thought though. I wouldn't really want him representing England. It would be our version of Romney. I wouldn't mind him being PM if we could somehow bar him from leaving the country.

Although I know what you mean, people vote for a party, I think the majority of people choose their party depending on the leader (obviously depends on whether they have ties to a party). I think labour are going to have a real issue getting elected with Ed as their leader. He just doesn't have presence.

[–]RealSourLemonade 0 points1 point ago

I dont think he will be PM or at least not anytime soon, i think as long as the leader of a party doesnt have a bad reputation then the people who like that party will vote for it, alot of my friends dont like the Tories and they dont know anything about policies and whatever, they just come from a labour area and so dont like the Tories. Im not sure who i think will be elected next but it seems like it will be Labour just because its the Tories in power now, seems to go back and forth.

Nobody white-people-dances like the British.

[–]redditjerk 9 points10 points ago

They even got 6 people doing the "side-to-side clap with minimal elbow groove" going on

I can't help but love Boris. Politically, we're at odds, but he's just so entertaining.

[–]MikeTheSpikeNorth Korea 14 points15 points ago

I'm just impressed Boris didn't set his hair on fire from the olympic flame.
