All I'm saying is to many people complain about the content on subreddits when the can easily unsubscribe. Its like complaining about the nickleback station on Pandora, you have a choice whether to listen to it or not.
I agree that unsubscribing cuts off a huge amount of it, but there are definitely jokes made in other subreddits geared toward making fun of different kinds of theism, when that really doesn't need to happen.

People make gaming jokes in other subs, people add political commentary in other subs, people mention movies in other subs, people bring up music in other subs.
It turns out, other topics happen. But people freak out when anything atheistic or antitheistic shows up... or even when it doesn't when a Christian makes a post about religion and the comments get filled with more anti-atheism stuff even though the original post had nothing to do with atheism.

Really? Reddit is filled with racism, mysogny, disdain of various mainstream musicians, disgust with NBC, antagpony for EA (gaming distributor), and TONS of hatred for right wing politics/politicians/talking heads/etc.
I've unsubscribed from r/politics. There usually isn't too much spillover from that. The point is, the majority and the worst of the hateful comments are anti-theistic. I personally don't see racism that is anywhere near the top comments, usually the same for misogyny. However, EA receives hate because they don't treat anyone well. Hate for right wing is mostly because this is a liberal-based community. While I don't agree with any of it (besides maybe a snide remark about Justin Bieber), there is no argument against the fact that most of the hate is of anti-theistic origin.

I respectfully disagree, I think all stupid ideas (religious or non-religious) should be mocked and made fun of. And we mostly do that in society. It's just that stupid religious ideas get a pass when almost no other stupid ideas do, because there is a double standard.
For example, if someone came into this group promoting the "belief" that Jews and blacks are inferior, they would be instantly mocked and shunned as pariahs (rightfully). If a guy was standing on your street corner wearing his underwear outside his pants, saying Obama told him to eat his dog through a filling in his tooth, he might not only get laughed at, he might get locked up for his own safety.
So why should this be any different than when someone says they don't think gays should marry because their religion says it's wrong? Or that the world was created in 6 days 5,000 years ago, and that there was a Great Flood that destroyed all humans except two people? They are all demonstrably stupid ideas. Why do those ideas get a pass from mockery?
Because it's offensive, without being offensive to others. Now the gay marriage is different, but most Christians who aren't fundies (or assholes) have different opinions about it. However, making fun of what someone believes in isn't respectful.

I agree, but some of the things people believe in don't deserve respect. So being disrespectful to those shitty beliefs is a good thing.
Respect isn't something we should just hand out like welfare checks. It should be earned. If people have stupid beliefs, we should disrespect them (the ideas, not necessarily the people).
Keep in mind, there is a distinction between disrespecting beliefs, and disrespecting people. We should always try to respect the people behind the beliefs, even when we mock the dumb beliefs.
I don't know if you understand this, but mocking someone's beliefs is the same thing as mocking someone for their beliefs. You have no right whatsoever to bully people because you think their beliefs are absurd. Reincarnation makes no sense to me. Do I go around mocking Hindus? No. Because I'm not a dick.

No but really. The quality in /r/atheism has seriously diminished over the last few years. I was there when I started lurking about 3 or 4 years ago, and it wasn't so bad back then. Now it's really just bashing on Christians, and I think it's stupid. My theory is that it had a large amount of subscribers from when it was actually good, and at that time it was a good idea to have it as a default subreddit; now, however, it's much worse and the subscribers it still has are mostly because it's a default subreddit. Not sure if any of that makes sense.

Atheism in itself means nothing more than not believing in a god. That's literally the only thing that all atheists have in common. Not all of them (us) are scientists, or even give a shit about science. I don't post there and I hardly ever read what's posted there. I personally care quite a bit about science and the progression thereof. I also never claimed to be above or better than anyone. I was religious for most of my life, and I don't think less of anyone who is, because I understand the appeal. Take a look at r/trueatheism. It's heavily moderated, and has very good content. Less moderation allows for lower quality content, lower quality content such as memes or quotes and quick to read and easily get upvotes.

Most /r/atheism users are in the US, and in the US, it's no secret that there are people trying to actually get science out of the classroom, in place of pseudoscience, or that there are people actively trying to keep homosexuals from being married. Those are the people who /r/atheism talks about when you see Facebook conversations and memes like Sheltering Suburban Mom.
The ignorant theists are the ones /r/atheism talks about. No one in /r/atheism posts a Facebook conversation in which someone says they believe in God, and the atheists begins hurling insults at them. When ever you see Facebook conversations it is very likely the person in there said something ignorant or incorrect, which was corrected.
If atheists were passing laws that for example banned the right of a student to pray in school /r/Christianity would certainly be negative about it. /r/Christianity isn't negative because they don't have a reason to be negative.
TL;DR Light moderation is the cause for some pretty shitty content in r/atheism, /r/atheism is negative because they have a valid reason to be negative.
