If they're black and living in America I call them Americans or I call them black. I call myself white. If they're black and living in Australia they're either Australian, black, or aborigine. The vast majority of Americans who are black and want to be referred to as "African American" either a) can't find Africa on a map, or b) can't tell me what part of Africa they're from, or anything about African culture. They are at least as far removed from Africa as I am from Scotland - I don't refer to myself as a Scottish American, therefore I will not refer to them as African American.

I was born in America, my parents were, my grandparents were, my great-grandparents were. At what point do I get to be just American?

You're wrong about the term, African American means: Ethnicity - Nationality.

Some black people are legitimately African American, like Barack Obama.

However it is wrong to call all black people African Americans because some are not from a close African ethnicity and some are not American, and I'll agree that even black people identify themselves with the term incorrectly, but the term itself is legititamte just used in the wrong context.

Ex:

If you're from an Irish Ethnicity and American: You're Irish American.

If You're from a Korean Ethnicity and American: You're Korean American.

Ok I'll try this again - stupid iPhone allows me to fat finger everything. My point is that we have created politically correct terms for everything and everyone, and by doing so we have also created more divisions within American society. Everyone has some kind of euphemistic title now, either to give them special rights or keep them from getting their feelings hurt.

Ex: garbage collectors are "waste management specialists" Midgets are "little people" Black people are "African American", or "people of color" (wtf is that?) White people are still just white people.

I'm older and I'm having a Clint Eastwood "get off my lawn" moment about political correctness. I'm sick of it, and tired of hearing stupid new terms created every other week for some special group that feels oppressed. We are the least oppressed, most coddled, spoiled citizens on the planet.

In all seriousness, he probably has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome or Marfan's Syndrome, or some other growth/connective tissue related disorder. Both can cause increased mortality rates in young people. Early diagnosis is the best preventative measure, but they'd probably tell him he can't play basketball.

Well he had a lot of generosity in those bones. I remember him giving so much away he couldn't afford health insurance when he was in an accident.

He died of kidney failure and some rare disease (Stevens–Johnson syndrome according to wiki) but that was not as far as I am aware related to his height.

Well, I was identified as Marfanoid because I'm tall and thin and met clinical tests for hyperflexibility (which would be less noticeable in someone as built as him). Blood tests are expensive and can only confirm- can't rule out- so it's common practice to go with a clinical diagnosis based on a doctor's identification of symptoms. If his death was cardiovascular-system related, that would point towards Marfan's or something similar, as undiagnosed sufferers or people who have it and do intensive sports often experience sudden cardio death. Fortunately, mine is really mild and I'm no athelete anyway. It doesn't effect my life much (other than annual cardiologist appointments.

It seems doubtful they'd test for these diseases postmortem unless the family was willing to pay for them. Idk how he died though, so this is speculative. A ton of NBA players have Marfan's, diagnosed or not, though. That's been established.
