Thanks for the support guys! Didn't realise my little GIF would be so popular :)

[–]PhiladelphiaIrish 181 points182 points ago

[–]nmpraveen 31 points32 points ago

No, it goes here

[–]DiscoMonkay 18 points19 points ago

Karma ain't in short supply, you can upvote both.

[–]Musicien 13 points14 points ago

[–]Cyberslasher 6 points7 points ago

[–]DeathToPennies 2 points3 points ago

I often wonder what it would be like if karma were like exchangeable. You have to give a point to upvote, and downvoting takes one. How would the reddit community handle this?

[–]PasswordWasTaco 8 points9 points ago

It would start out all right for the first two minutes. Then the biggest down voting marathon would occur. The ones with the most karma would hit zero first then there will be endless down voting battles between reditors for no reason. Everyone will stop posting for the sake of not losing anymore karma. With out any new material people would start losing interest in Reddit bringing the ultimate demise of the site. I would give it ten minutes............

[–]saremei 1 point2 points ago

Or in reality, people would stop posting for the utterly useless concept of karma. Karma whoring wouldn't happen anymore as it would be pointless.

[–]MRiley84 2 points3 points ago

Isn't it already pointless?

[–]DiscoMonkay 0 points1 point ago

Not very well I'd say, though that'd be pretty cool. Maybe you're only allowed so many upvotes per day or something.

[–]lejefferson 0 points1 point ago

Can someonse seriously tell me why my Chris Christie post got downvoted?? I still laugh at it every time I see it. I'm so confused.

[–]DeathToPennies 0 points1 point ago

I' have a PHd in Karmanomics, with a VhS in reddit culture. I could probably explain it to you if you link to it.

[–]lejefferson 0 points1 point ago

I. I. I don't know what that means. http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m7dwhdgOcm1r8we7o.gif

[–]lejefferson 0 points1 point ago

Hey here's the link to that comment of mine that got downvoted to hell. I was legitimately confused about why it got so many downvotes and you offered to explain it to me. I could still use some tutoring in karmanomics if the offer is still on the table. Thanks. http://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/y2ufc/see_familiar_work_on_reddit_realise_someone_stole/c5rwk0l

[–]DeathToPennies 0 points1 point ago

Well, here's what I get from it.

Your post wasn't terribly funny. A bit, sure, but not terribly funny. When something is on the fence like that, it's subject to downvote snowballing. Essentially, this is when the first two or three people decide the final karma outcome of a post. We'll start with when you post it. You have one karma. Somebody comes across it, and they hate it. So they downvote it. Then a second guy comes across. He likes it, and brings it back up to one. Then a third guy comes, and downvotes it again. You're back to 0. Another guy comes along, and doesn't really think much of it. But then he sees the karma on it. Seeing that's it's not positive, he thinks, "Actually, yeah, that wasn't funny at all. Fuck this guy." then us downvotes it. This goes on for a while, until the post is buried and people just scroll past it.

Another reason that the downvotes may have started was your use of "NOM NOM NOM." It's just one of those phrases that people got tired of. A third could be that your joke was too much of a stretch. It didn't fit into the thread as seamlessly as hoped.

But the biggest reason is your second comment, asking why on we're downvoted. Unless the comment that was downvoted was stating an opinion, never ask why. People hate other people complaining about downvotes.

[–]lejefferson 0 points1 point ago

Hey thanks for that. Really helpful. That all makes a lot of sense. I just wanted to say I wasn't complaining as much as legitimately curious. I honestly laugh even now looking at it and thought reddit would like it too. I think it's because it is so non-sequitor that I like it so much. Maybe my humor is just different from others. But then again the reason I thought people would like it is because I seem to see a lot of things like this on reddit that just make it so hilarious and is why I enjoy it so much. Any words of advice on how to post things that people will like? You seem to be doing quite well. :) I still can't seem to post any links that get any upvotes. Thanks again. Cheers mate.

[–]matt01ss 13 points14 points ago

[–]LeaferWasTaken 6 points7 points ago

Credit where credit's due. It was an awesome GIF and we couldn't let others rake in all the sweet karma.

[–]lejefferson -2 points-1 points ago

OH THAT SWEET SWEET KARMA.

[–]flargoo -1 points0 points ago

Hey, you made it!

[–]fozzyfreakingbear 1 point2 points ago

Ahhhh, so you're the winner of the the Bolt GIF race of '12.

[–]deathmint -3 points-2 points ago

Did you take the original video?

If not, then it isnt your work and you are just as much a thief as you claim others are.

If so, good job.

I await a reply.

[–]Mrekat[S] 1 point2 points ago

I think you know the answer already ;)

No, I in fact did not record the original video, I didn't even turn the video clip into a Gif. A few people wanted me to upload the Gif as a separate post and so I did, albeit with a terrible title.

I see now that it has caused much anguish amongst the people of Reddit and regret this decision.

[–]lejefferson 0 points1 point ago

Now can you edit it so that little upvotes and downvotes come out when it explodes?? Just think. We could start a whole new thread and do this all over again. Yay!!

[–]SirSandGoblin -3 points-2 points ago

i am struggling to understand how posting a link to footage from the olympics now counts as you making something, unless you were the cameraman or something

[–]deathmint -4 points-3 points ago

My point exactly. Someone getting butthurt because their little photoshop got co-opted does not qualify as artistic enfringement.

[–]SirSandGoblin -5 points-4 points ago

am i getting old? because i feel like i dont understand it at all. are we old? is that it?

[–]mysterym3at -1 points0 points ago

It's 4:30 AM. I'm pooping, and I lol'd when I saw this

[–]treytech 82 points83 points ago

I think this gif was the superior version. It even has rotation.

(Original comment)

[–]joshcryer 13 points14 points ago

OP agrees.

[–]lejefferson 5 points6 points ago

I like Mrekats better. Rotation does not equal superelevation.

[–]Daroo425 2 points3 points ago

this is the superior gif because of the correct angled upvote

This happened to my husband once.

He was working as a commercial artist and had sculpted these Egyptian style reliefs. The owner of the place he worked at paid him for the originals and told him if they ever sold (in Gift shops or what have you) that my husband would receive a percentage.

The originals were cast and a few samples were made, but no buyers.

A year later we were at the Sahara hotel having dinner (lived in Vegas). We had been around all his work for so long that the atmosphere didn't seem odd at all. It was like running into someone you see all the time but this time while on vacation.

We were over halfway through dinner when we realized, the whole restaurant was covered with mass produced versions of his originals.

[–]DevanLochees 7 points8 points ago

What happened next? Did your husband contact the buyer of the originals?

[–]ThatGirl_Tasha 31 points32 points ago

The guy he was working for at the time was a crack addict. He basically smoked his business away, which until then was a huge business, they made pretty much made all the fake trees and rocks and scenery in the theme parks and casinos that were so popular at the time (early 90s) in Vegas.

By the time we saw those plaques, in the restaurant, the place had closed down.

He did find out where they purchased them from but it was several times removed from his old boss. A long time later, because the crack addict still tried to keep up appearances in business circles and my mom-in-law was a well known business woman in Vegas, he did actually write my husband a small check.

The good news is while he was there, he sculpted two life sized figures for the MGM Grand theme park (since torn down).

They were amazing- a minute man and The Librete http://i.imgur.com/KvHaH.jpg.

He sent photos of them along with his law school apps, and he got into every school he applied to. This certainly wasn't the only reason he got in, but I think it helped them to remember him.

It's unrelated to getting ripped off but it seems a consolation, all the same.

[–]hazy_browns 11 points12 points ago

i really enjoyed your post

[–]DevanLochees 7 points8 points ago

Wow, that figure looks really good! I hope your husband still continues his art as a hobby. It'd be a shame for such a talent to disappear :O

Thanks for finishing of the story :)

[–]XivSpew 4 points5 points ago

At the very least, his work seriously impressed some random guy on the internet at 3 AM.

[–]ThatGirl_Tasha 7 points8 points ago

What more could anyone ask for?

[–]aDrunkPirate 2 points3 points ago

If it makes you feel better, Sahara has been closed down for some time now

[–]ThatGirl_Tasha 1 point2 points ago

Ah but they used to have this special . . . half of a baked chicken with potatoes and some dessert thing. We would eat the leftovers for a week.

Edit] was trying to find old pics of the place, mine are in a box somewhere, but found the old menu instead. I was not kidding about the chicken thing. http://newmexicophotography.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/sahara-caravan-room-open-menu.gif

[–]marty_m 4 points5 points ago

Oh and their Egyptian-style reliefs? Remember those? Gosh I miss that place.

[–]ThatGirl_Tasha 1 point2 points ago

Funny, the waitresses used to joke about stealing one to give to us. But alas, they were screwed into the wall.

[–]_mach 4 points5 points ago

Side note: screwing waitresses into walls really does inhibit their ability to steal.

[–]alienbringer 0 points1 point ago

but it makes them moist?

[–]ItsDanimal 0 points1 point ago

For real? I've been to Vegas only once, it was like 4 years who, and Sahara is were I stayed at. That really sucks. Wasnt it one if the old school casinos from back when Vegas was all Vegas?

[–]aDrunkPirate 0 points1 point ago

Yeah it's been about a year since its closed down I think. I miss the rollercoaster they had outside and sad I never got to try their big burrito challenge . Lol

[–]Mrekat[S] 4 points5 points ago

Wow that sucks, I knew that pretty much everyone's story on here would be FAR better than mine, so I wanted a post to see them. Glad you found a place to tell yours :)

Also, your husband is an awesome sculptor! I hope he's still doing them.

[–]GrimTuesday 4 points5 points ago

To be honest, I feel that this gif is a representation of upvoting then taking away the upvote.

[–]Live_Think_Diagnosis 0 points1 point ago

She never touched it. It's more like being a redditor represents an upvoter, but we say "NAY!", I won't upvote, and thus the surprise face when they see good content without upvotes.

[–]bigmouth_strikes 18 points19 points ago

Nice gif.

I'm not sure I understand though, what was your actual "work"? (As in "What would you say that you do here?")

Did you make a gif out of something that the thousands and thousands involved in the Olympic television production created?

And what was stolen? Internet points?

I'm confused.

[–]Sindragon 18 points19 points ago

Yeah, he took something that was

  • done by an athlete
  • shot by a cameraman
  • relayed by broadcast engineers and
  • most likely edited in video form and uploaded to the 'net by someone he's never met

then he and turned it into a gif using software

  • written by a programmer

and hosted it on a community site

  • run by a bunch of administrators and developers

which means everyone has to credit him and bow down to his superiority and effort, because another person might have posted his "work".

[–]IXgag 21 points22 points ago

This isn't r/politics there captain fun

[–]MF_DTA 4 points5 points ago

"You didn't build that"?

[–]lejefferson 0 points1 point ago

Wow. That was pessimistic. I think we can all agree it sucks that someone stole his content. Doesn't mean we have to turn it into a political statement from the Communist Party of China about the importance of labor in our society.

[–]Sindragon 0 points1 point ago

Ever heard of the phrase "tongue in cheek"?

[–]lejefferson 0 points1 point ago

Uh. I think you need to learn what that phrase means. If you really do then you could use some training in sarcasm friend because that wasn't it.

[–]greatchickenman 1 point2 points ago

The fact that he used a program written by software developers is irrelevant. Do movie creators not own their movies because they filmed them with cameras made by a different company, then put it together with tools like final cut pro, pro tools, photoshop, etc?

[–]PortConflict 2 points3 points ago

Add to this, that it breaches IOC guidelines on how the vision is used.

Unless he has express written permission to use it by paying for the rights, they can order it be taken down.

[–]Cletus_VanDamme 2 points3 points ago

you put the arrow on him?

[–]TitaniumNation 0 points1 point ago

I would've liked this gif better if he held the upvote up high at the end in a taunting fashion.

[–]KorayA 0 points1 point ago

Yes. Especially considering the title of the submission.

[–]mdax8414 4 points5 points ago

This thread is justice.

[–]WhatEvery1sThinking 4 points5 points ago

stole your work? you just added a fucking upvote arrow you whiny bitch

[–]lejefferson 0 points1 point ago

I assumed he was referring to some sort of art.

[–]marty_m -1 points0 points ago

Let me also add the idea for the upvote came from Reddit's creators and the footage from a televised and copyrighted broadcast. Condescending Wonka: "Please tell me how somebody stole your work..."

[–]Mrekat[S] 3 points4 points ago

Yeah definitely go upvote Infintinity and give him all the Karma you can. It was completely his idea, I just lazily made it.

Also midnightbacon24 for the actual Gif.

[–]Mrekat[S] 1 point2 points ago

Yeah I wouldn't call it work eithier. Literally just copied/pasted an arrow onto about 10 frames.

I wasn't even that bothered that guy took it, but I just couldn't think of a decent title.

I kind of did it just for people that could relate to the title, not so much for my GIF

[–]imdigtal 1 point2 points ago

Usain Bolt reminds me of Barbados Slim from Futurama. Except, you know, Usain doesn't seem like an asshole.

[–]autopsi 2 points3 points ago

Contact the MPAA, they will help you recover your losses.

[–]mmeloira 1 point2 points ago

hahahaha This just made my night! its so true!

[–]marty_m 1 point2 points ago

Sarcasm meter starting to tingle.

[–]whatwasigonnasay 1 point2 points ago

Is it realize or realise?

[–]Wild_Bulbasaur 10 points11 points ago

In America it's realize, anywhere else that speaks English is realise.

Edit: Canada uses realize as well, thanks for correcting that marty_m.

[–]marty_m 2 points3 points ago

Dwight: "False. Canada uses realize."

[–]Wild_Bulbasaur 1 point2 points ago

Oh, I wasn't aware of that. Excuse my mistake there.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Wild_Bulbasaur 5 points6 points ago

I know it evolves over time. I wasn't implying that the American way to spell it was wrong, I was simply telling him it's spelled differently. Don't get defensive for nothing.

[–]geeca 2 points3 points ago

Shut up.

[–]kynetix 0 points1 point ago

He wasn't implying America didn't speak English. He was saying other countries that ALSO speak English spell it realise.

[–]ElGoddamnDorado 1 point2 points ago

Either one is right. If you get corrected for either tell that person to shove off.

[–]MisterMunchie 0 points1 point ago

Hehehe... wait, reddit is work? Where can I get in on this?

[–]PupcubSkittles 0 points1 point ago

I hope he came back and high fived her properly, or that would just suck for her

[–]ffca 0 points1 point ago

Looking at this .gif, I'm 99% sure Bolt's victory jog is twice as fast as I can run.

[–]Basszus 0 points1 point ago

Whats she gonna do.....catch him?! ohhhhohoh

[–]sicnarfj 0 points1 point ago

How do you make a gif like this? Just curious

[–]Bunnyhat 0 points1 point ago

Fucking stoners.

100 comments pointing out the bong.

[–]Virus201 0 points1 point ago

How do you edit gifs like that?

[–]Falcon1101 0 points1 point ago

I was the guy that said the repost on r/new was the greatest

[–]takuyafire 1 point2 points ago

Interesting use of the word "work"

[–]AndYourWorldWillBurn -2 points-1 points ago

I regret that I have but one upvote to give for my OP.

I usually don't do this, but you deserve my meek upvote because I blatantly obseved your work getting stolen. I am sorry.

[–]Jasejunk 0 points1 point ago

Hooray!

[–]Peteriffic -5 points-4 points ago

Usain bolt is an asshole

[–]lofty29 0 points1 point ago

Funnily enough, that official will probably remember him not hi-fiving her more fondly than if he had.

[–]Kungafsand 0 points1 point ago

He was actually suppose to hand her the stick from the 4x100 meter race. He wanted to keep it. There was a minor dispute just after that and he didnt get to keep the stick. Shame actually, they deserved to have that.

[–]Taiokaion 0 points1 point ago

It's a world record run, I'm pretty sure that Jamaica deserves the stick.

[–]Peteriffic 0 points1 point ago

I never said they didn't deserve their win. I just think Usain needs a little dose of humility.

[–]chill1495 0 points1 point ago

Here you go...psych!!!!

[–]draw_art 0 points1 point ago

I love all these upvote gifs. Keep 'em comin reddit.

[–]yearrgh -4 points-3 points ago
